Thank you for stopping by. Take a break from the household chores. It's time for the almost World Famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. A place where we talk about animals, small and large.

It's time.

Meet the PetMorons.

sleepy john.jpg

This week's first PetMoron is Sleepy John. Here is a little information about him from his "owner". "Meet SleepyJohn! Not happy unless he his covered in dirt from nose to tail. Lurker Tass"

sabrina .jpg

Sabrina submitted this photo of her new kittehs. There story is as follows: Attached is an action shot (hence slight blur) of my new supervisors, Diesel and Baxter. They are saving me from a very thin snake that looks deceptively like a shoestring, but is apparently very dangerous.

kodos.jpg

We don't see these often here at the Pet Thread. Glad you made the submission.
"Two of our Borzoi puppies. In the foreground is Dan ("The Brick") and in the background is his winsome sister Dutchess. Hope you can use it.

Kodos the Executioner"

allstar.jpg

Check out this little cutie and her story.
"Baarrrkkk like a pirate! This my 14 year old terrier mix, Allstar. She had recently had her eye removed due to glaucoma. She lost the sight in her remaining eye about a year later but she is still hanging in there! - the Butcher"

rebel.jpg

Last but not least. Here is Rebel and a little bit about him.
"This is Rebel the Dog. He's a two year old American Staffordshire Terrier. He was supposed to be a Truck Dog and go on the road with me. Instead, he'd rather stay with his buds at TailsRWaggin and get taken care of by the cute girls...so he does:-). On our days off, we eat sleep and go for walks. He's a Good Boy and I'm very proud of him. I've been a "lurker" for years and AOS is almost always the first Place I go. Thanks to all. Keep up the good work. Rick554!"

Thank you Rick and all the others who have submitted their pet photos. We appreciate you sending them in. We are always looking for photos and other interesting pet and animal stories. You can reach us at petmorons at gmail. Hoping you and your pets have a good week.

10 Laughing with (not at) Rebel's human. Isn't that the way it is supposed to be? You get a dog for a quiet companion for walks and couch potato snuggles; he turns into a (meth)Lab. You want an active hunting dog, you get a gun-shy lapdog. My experience with cats has always been that they are aloof but companionable; my current cat is a cuddle beast.

Borzois are beautiful beasties, but I like working dogs. Heh (see above).

25 Beautiful pets and stories!

Our two kitties are going to drive me nuts.

They are both hyperthyroid, and one is extremely allergic to the meds, so is on Hills Y/D Thyroid formula. The other is on meds and can eat whatever she wants.

Had them both on the Y/D formula and off the meds, and then the older one became extremely picky and quit eating the canned food. To the point that after one day, her legs collapsed under her. So she's back on the meds twice a day.

The other one I switched to the Y/D dry food, and she loves it. Now the one on meds wants to eat the dry Y/D food, and the one who can only eat the Y/D food keeps sneaking the food she can't eat.

So I'm thinking of calling the vet and asking if I should take the 15 y.o. kitteh off the meds and just give them both the damned dry food. I'm literally pulling my hair out over the two of them.

Gah. Anyone had older cats with thyroid issues? Thoughts?

27 Diesel and Baxter say mrrrup! to all the other pet Morons. Not only do they save me from shoelace snakes, they have also learned how to slay the heffalumps that appear when changing the bedsheets, and no spider survives for long. I feel very safe in my house.

They are still working on tolerating my sister's dog, who adores cats but gets so wound up when she sees one it can be...offputting to the admired feline. So far Diesel seems interested in being friends, maybe. Dog and kitteh buddies are quite cute.

29 People have commented about how difficult, and infuriating, adopting a pet from a rescue program can be. At least locally, our county animal shelter (not a rescue league) doesn't operate that way. They check for a record of cruelty to animals (and presumably other police reports), require a contract that you will properly feed, shelter and care for (vet care) the animal, and agree that animal control can visit at reasonable hours if a complaint is registered. I don't consider this onerous.

We learned this yesterday. Saw a notice the shelter had a toy poodle/Maltese mix (both breeds are hypoallergenic). With a good disposition, that would have been ideal. Unfortunately, we were 12 hours too late, it had already been adopted. Damn!

At least now we know the procedure.

31 If your poison is actually a freaking medcine, I'm sorry, but you're doing it wrong. I mean, what if the predator was having a diabetic episode in the middle of attacking you, and then you bite him, and voilá, he's all better. Not very bright, IMHO.

36 Maybe the next one will be a schnauzer or a stuffed animal,

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at December 03, 2016 03:14 PM (voOPb)

Schnauzers - I highly recommend them. Smart, unscented, sweet dogs. Well, maybe not the sweetest (I think a dog should be a little on the dumb side to get the maximum sweetness factor, but maybe that's just me).
My first dog was a schnoodle - Heidi. Then we had Max, a black miniature Schnauzer, followed by Klaus, a brindle miniature Schnauzer.

Klaus was a real character. He had a whole laundry basket full of stuffed animals, all with names. You could tell him to fetch one by name - for example, "Molester Bunny" (long story) - and he'd root through the basket and find it, and bring it to you. He was also a great travel dog who was welcome in any house, since he was so well-behaved.

37 Yay! pet thread. Sleepy John is cute. Is he Corgi? I've only seen brown and white Corgis but he sure looks like one. Love Allstar, what a cute little pirate. A little misty eyed over Rebel, Ole was a brindle about that color and before him we had a fawn brindle rescue that looked like a Neapolitan Mastiff from the breed book so I have a soft spot for the brindle coats.

39 Kodos,
Didn't know you were a borzoi guy.
My neighbor lives, eats, breathes borzoi. Every square inch of every wall is a borzoi print. Every flat suface has a borzoi statue or trinket. Her license plate, her mailbox, her email addy - all borzoi related.

I helped her put the last one in the car car for his final ride a few months back. She's due to get a rescue in a few months.

Posted by: Chi - #FreeCthulhu at December 03, 2016 03:52 PM (+wNVP)

40 Love all the pet pictures but Allstar the terrier pirate captures my heart. I've mentioned in the past that we had a poodle that went blind at 4 years old. Everyone assumed we would put him down. The thought never occurred. Even the vet was surprised but pleased about our decision. Argyle lived another eight years. As long as we didn't drastically rearrange the furniture, he did just fine.

We've had blind dogs, a deaf one, and I've seen my share of three legged pets. They remain the same happy and goofy bundles of love they always were.

43 Re
Down. Stay for a Long Time.

It's a great article for pointing out the limits of training that are too much based on quick positive (or negative) reinforcement, as opposed to longer term trust.

BUT, I can't help but notice that the dogs being trained were "six border collies, five golden retrievers, a German shepherd and a Chinese crested."

Now, I know nothing about the Chinese Crested breed, but I can tell you that there is a very good reason that the 3 other breeds (and a scant handful of others) absolutely dominate obedience competitions.

Train six Afghans, five Airedales, and a Westie to do that and I'll be more impressed!

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that my 84 year old mom was about to acquire a 2-year old Malti-poo, sight unseen.

Well as it turns out he's a really nice little dog, and very cute as well. Not good timing for a new pet, but he got to meet everyone and our big dogs at our Thanksgiving get together in the country. He handled that hot mess just fine.

In the face he looks just like an Ewok. The only downside to him so far is he likes to hump the side of his new little dog bed. He is un-fixed, and Mom plans to fix that issue ASAP. Sorry little buddy.

Oh, Heidi was such a sweetie! Her mommy was a black poodle, and we were visiting cousins in Ohio, whose neighbors had all these puppies to give away. So we got this fuzzy black pup.
One day Mom took her to get her groomed, and they gave her a schnauzer cut (her tail had been cropped but her ears were longer and left natural). When my mom went to pick her up, she didn't recognize her. She was silver! All the neighbors thought we'd gotten a new dog.
From that day on, she loved going to the groomers, because everyone would make such a fuss over her when she got home.

67 Today seems to be a little slow in here - maybe a good time to say hello. AOS is the premier site/blog on the web, I truly enjoy it. I wait all week for the pet thread and the book thread. Pure gold.

We ( my better half I ) live just outside Savannah, GA. We are both from CT, but discovered that you never have to shovel 4 inches of rain from the driveway, and other signs that there is only rumors of Winter down here. It was a no brainer when retirement raised it's lovely head.

We have two canine house mates. a 12 y o black tan dachshund and a one year old Mini Pin, Peaches and Kea We had 2 doxies till about 2 years ago, but we lost the red Dapple to heart disease. It seemed as if peaches was wasting away from loneliness ( that just may be a specious justification to get another dog) but she was not doing very well.We have never had or known anyone with a Mini Pin, so we were not exactly prepared for this little live wire, but she seems to have revitalized the Doxie. They are constantly chasing each other around and discussing whom has primacy over the toys. They sleep stacked one on top of the other. Mini Pins are are three ring circus all by themselves----with a split personality.

Well, someone from my husband's unit drove us home from the airport and I saw a skunk dart from our porch! No more kitty food set out-skunks aren't supposed to eat it!

Go in person first, and then set up a time with your kids. That way you will also get a feel for the vet and their office and your kids will have the learning experience as well. Feed the cat first and make the new puppy wait until the senior member of the household has eaten. Easy and polite and makes integration almost seamless.

Your biggest problem will be the kids and you have to be ruthless in enforcing the seniority rule so the pets will cohabit -- and sometimes even become BFFs.

Hah, my dogs never picked up on that, but they definitely know to read our actions, like when we're getting ready to go on a car trip. Unfortunately for them, a trip in the car usually ends at the vet or the kennel.

Last time we took them somewhere fun, they were so excited that I threatened them to behave, or else we'd take them to the kennel instead, with a side trip to the vet for some shots. Not sure they understood that but they eventually settled down.

Thank you. The one who is allergic to the meds also *had* diabetes, and went into a seizure in the wee hours one night when she suddenly no longer had diabetes. Rushed her to 24 hr. vet hospital, and they said she was completely blind. I was beside myself.

The next day she regained her sight, which was a miracle.

She's 14 and our "puppy cat." The sweetest, friendliest thing ever. I'm going to do my best to keep her alive and happy as long as possible.

The 15 y.o. girl is a little spitfire "tiny ball of rage" (joking). If I can take her off the meds (again) and have them both on the same diet (again), life will be much less complicated. It's crazy trying to feed them and keep them from eating each others' food.

We have a great vet, who has a 16 y.o. hyperthyroid kitty who does well on just the diet.

Fingers crossed I can get these girls worked out with their diets. I can't even imagine them not being with us. Our last two kitties lived to be 18.

My 'catnip' response wasn't meant to be completely frivolous. It heightens appetite, which may increase regardless of the food served. Also try mixing turmeric into the food. Mildy stoned kitties with the munchies won't mind the taste and the beneficial pain-alleviating effects may be helpful too.
