The Conceit of The Intelligentsia That Politicans Are Intelligent

John Podhoretz is a smug and arrogant pundit...pretty much the epitome of inside-the-beltway journalism and thought, in spite of his right-of-center leanings. He's a fan of an open immigration policy, which he justifies at least partly on the basis of his Jewishness. I find that offensive and stupid in the extreme. The great waves of immigration that brought Germans and Irish and Italians and Jews to America occurred during a slightly different time. That he can justify an open-borders policy in light of our current economic difficulties suggests to me that he isn't nearly as smart as he thinks he is. Needless to say, he is no fan of Donald Trump, but this article has some interesting points, chief among them that Donald Trump is not playing by the rules because he is not operating with some grand plan.Trump makes sense once you realize you're watching improv

But we're missing one profound thing about Trump, and we keep missing it, and we will continue to miss it: Trump is not a politician. He doesn't think of himself as a politician, and he doesn't act like a politician, and we're all desperately trying to fit him into our understanding of what he's supposed to be.

The problem is that Podhoretz doesn't cast the same analytical eye on every other politician. Perhaps Trump is improvising, but the experience of the last eight years should have taught Podhoretz that grand plans executed by politicians rarely work. Because they are not as smart as they think they are...just like Johnny boy!

They all went to the same schools, and go to the same parties and restaurants and bars, and -- probably -- use the same hookers. So it is not surprising that in the echo chamber of the Acela corridor they all are tremendously impressed with their collective intelligence.

But....I watched Trump make "mistake" after "mistake" for months. He misspoke, he insulted, he inflamed, he changed his views. He went off script so much that it was obvious there was no script. And worst of all, he went after the media. In short, he did everything the Acela crowd knew...KNEW...wouldn't work.

He screwed up so much that he got elected President of the United States of America.

So what does that say about the pundits who are now flailing around trying to find another way to criticize him?

A long time ago, the phrase, "Subvert The Dominant Paradigm" was in vogue. The Acela crowd has been the paradigm for a generation. That they are being subverted hasn't sunk in yet.

Trump has been in business and in the public eye for a loooong time. He's behaving according to what has made him successful at both, not trying to please the MSM and get re-elected.

People joke about Trump 2020, but I hope he only plans on 1 term so that he packs in as much change as he can make with no worries about getting re-elected. Given his age, he needs to do this stuff now.

Donald Trump is not an ideologue. I know that and I will bet that most everyone here grasped that in the summer of 2015. He isn't playing by the political rules which - again - was nose-on-face obvious back in summer 2015.

And by not being bound to the political strategy manual the professionals concocted to benefit the professionals who concocted it - consultants, strategists, fundraisers, and pundits - Donald Trump beat them all at their own game.

They now are forced to face that reality. I wonder how many will?

25 I'm transporting this from the last thread because I think this thread is a better fit for it"

"Now Larry Summers, Harvard business heavyweight and perennial Washington insider, is wringing his hands is the WaPo over the Carrier deal and what it will mean for American capitalism."

My takes:

(1) Like Scott Adams, I believe it is to set an immediate tone for the administration. See '12 O'clock High' when Gregory Peck's character takes over the dysfunctional bomber group. The first person he lays into is the guard on duty for being slovenly.
(2) It let's other nations know that the Trump Administration is going to take American interests into account first, and probably second or third.
(3) Regarding capital, it is letting Wall Street and all of the funds traders know that squeezing the last penny of dividend out of a company is not a priority of the Trump Administration. Their interest is but one interest to be taken into account and get in line.
(4) It gives Trump's supporters a sign that he heard them and means to do what he said. Whether he accomplishes all is irrelevant, he is signaling that his intentions and his statements are the same.

He's a businessman, and a relatively decent one, who also has a YUUUGGGEEE ego.

Being a businessman he knows in order to have his business be successful, which in this case is now The United States of American, he's going to have to be positive, lead by example, communicate well and frequently with his "employees" (the People), find the best people for all of the top jobs in his administration, and deal directly and forcefully with his competitors (the Dems and our enemies overseas). All of which he's doing and will continue to do.

Very simple, which explains why Podhoretz doesn't get it.

Ideologues and fanatics cannot do that. Hence the outrage over free trade. Free trade is a good thing if it benefits us. Some people see it as a totem, a symbol for marking their tribe.

An economic thing - good or bad depending on other circumstances - is turned into a political totem to mark a tribe whether it is good or bad.

66 Deep down, I think Trump is a pretty basic businessman tycoon type; he fights to win, he counts winning by dollars, but its being on top and winning that matters. He believes in America, he believes in the market, and he believes that this nation has been crippled by stupid economic policy for decades and has made that absolutely clear every time he's asked. That's the one consistent in his policy since the 80s: American businesses are being screwed by mega corps taking advantage of contacts with politicians to create favorable trade for overseas businesses.

Donald Trump is probably the best friend small businesses have, not because he cares about them, but because he hates what hurts them.

What I find most depressing about the hollering NeverTurnipers is that they've demonstrated that they're unable to get outside their heads and re-evaluate the situation with a more dispassionate take.

They come off as emotionally driven and bitterly certain about everything. Which in part is why they were so utterly, disastrously wrong about Turnip's victory.

Nothing out of NRO or Commentary will ever have the benefit of the doubt in terms of soundness or reason. They've shown themselves to be as reptilian as the sweatiest of the fever swamps of the left.

76 My mother's parents -- both east/central European Jews (Ukraine/Poland depending on when, and Hungary) -- came here in the 1920's when NOBODY got welfare, assistance, handouts, free lunches, or anything like that. In fact, my grandfather had to change his name from Nathan (to Norman) because it was too Jewish. They immediately stopped speaking their European languages (other than Yiddish at home), learned English fluently and without accent, met in Chicago, got married, had 2 kids and thence 5 grandkids, Poppa eventually bought a grocery store in Bellflower, CA (east LA), and when they died in the mid-90's, the gov't took a huge chunk of the small fortune they'd managed to amass (about $3mil). Oh, and in his 30's, my grandfather tried to enlist in the U.S. Army to fight Hitler.

79 "But what if there's no strategy? What if there's no organizing principle? What if Trump has no plan?"

But there is a plan: Make America Great Again

On a Macro level, it means a 180 from the Progressive Dems and a 120 from the GOPe.

As to tactics, do you doubt that Trump has already war-gamed the Mattis waiver with Bannon and others. It's not unlike war-gaming how to get a real estate proect done in places like NYC.

One of the reasons why Trump won the R nomination was that he wasn't a career politician afraid to go down in flames and hence took risky positions early. Most of the other candidates worried about their long-term political careers and/or had consultants who didn't want their gravy train end early.

Trump also isn't overly worried about being a one-termer.

Chasing Jewish votes is about as worthless as chasing most ethnic group votes. About 74% of Jewish votes went for Hillary. This is after 8 years of Obama and her wanting to continue his policies.

Another thing that Podohertz and everyone like him misses is that, yes, DJT hasn't been in politics or even given much thought to politics in his life, except for the past 18 months and probably more accurately for only the past 4-5 once he hired Bannon and Conway to arrange things. What they miss though is now that he has been forced to take positions he has a very conservative philosophy. Tax cuts, immigration reform, pro-life justices, climate warming as a hoax, school choice etc.

What policy issues has he a taken a position on that a conservative would object to? He's probably well to the right of Reagan on most issues at this point.

160 30, I've always thought the same thing, but not being Jewish myself, I've always been hesitant to bring it up. But from Podhoretz to Goldberg to Brooks to Kristol to Mona Charen to others I can't think of right this minute, it seems that every "rightish"Jewish commentator of note can't stand Trump. I know there are non Jews that fit into this (Will, etc.), but it's mostly Jews and frankly, it's annoying. It's annoying because it reveals that they have the same disdain for a good portion of their fellow citizens as those (mainly, but not exclusively) "leftish" Jewish commentators of note who are probably in the same social circles as the ones on the right.
Maybe it's history. Maybe Jews as a group just can't trust the "majority" and so want as many "minorities" around to dilute the "power" that the majority holds. I don't know.
But I can't think of anything else.

161 Sunday (two days from now) is another major moment in the history of Europe. Two elections are happening -- in Italy and Austria -- in which Trump-esque alternatives are currently leading in the polls.

In Austria, a populist right-wing candidate is running against an establishment candidate for the nation's presidency. Although it is somewhat of a "ceremonial position," the president actually has more powers than he generally ever uses -- because until now the president has been from the same political party as the prime minister and the parliament. But if the populist guy (Hofer) wins, he will throw a massive monkey wrench in the "business as usual" in Austria, including possibly scheduling their own "EU exit" vote, which he has promised to do. The other guy is from the Green Party, but he has the support of all the mainstream parties -- he is the "consensus candidate," because all the other politicians were unpopular.

In Italy, there is an even more confusing referendum vote to "streamline the government," which is a euphemism for "turn the prime minister into a dictator," because it removes all power from the Italian Senate. More significantly, the current prime minister announced he would resign if the referendum failed -- and suddenly the vote was transformed into a way to get him out of office. Currently the "No" side is way ahead in the polls, fueled by populist sentiment on the right AND the left -- sort of a combination of all Bernie voters and Trump voters all coming together to boot the establishment out of office.

Anyway, in both races, the "populist" side seems to have a significant lead in the polls, and are likely to win. (Although the Austrian race is actually a do-over, since the establishment guy committed blatant voter fraud in the first round -- which they will attempt again, no doubt.) So the outcome is not guaranteed -- but it's looking for for a Trumptastic wave to continue reverberating around the globe.

My big fear with Trump is that he's going to want to be "popular".

The easiest way for him to be "popular" will be to basically do nothing conservative and go to war with Republicans and side with Democrats.

I hope he wants to actually get some things done than worry about approval ratings done by the same people that said he was going to lose a landslide to Hillary.

Posted by: Maritime at December 02, 2016 02:35 PM (lO4Gp)

165 The completely missed aspect of the DJT phenomenon is that by campaigning against his personality and past buffoonery the Democrats (and media) never bothered to campaign against his stated policies. The buffoonery was a huge distraction that allowed a very conservative person (judging by his policy priorities and nominees) to essentially coast into the WH.

What Republican would ever dare say: "I will only appoint pro-life justices to the Supreme Court?" None. The closest any of them could come to that idea was to advocate for "Originalists" because the idea of actually saying "Pro-life" would have been huge fodder to Democrats.

Amazing. Probably going to be the most conservative president in our life-times and the media is still missing it with all their focus on racism, white nationalism, misogyny etc.

People on the left and ESPECIALLY in academia tend to mistake the ability to use complex language for intelligence. Hence Bush was an idiot, but Obama is a genius. Because Bush makes malapropisms, and Obama uses sentences with dependent clauses and five-syllable words.

I used to make this mistake myself, until I had a few experiences with complex-talking dumb people.

===

The "mistake" here is assuming that everything Trump did was the proximate cause of his winning. Maybe it was. . .maybe it wasn't. But he was running against a highly flawed and dislike candidate during a cycle with a relatively disliked exiting two term President.

Any GOP candidate 'should' (or 'could') have won this. That Trump did so running a highly unorthodox campaign doesn't necessarily mean his campaign worked better than a good conventional/orthodox one would have.

Usually a pump will die if it is allowed to run dry so I would check the float switch to make sure it is working right. Also look to make sure it's suction is not being blocked by trash.

Other than that one thing I have noticed with my old pool pumps is that the expected lifetime on them dropped more and more as they started being made in third world shit holes from shoddy materials. The chief culprit for their failures was the bearings in the motor.

"he changed his views"

A candidate represents a coalition of interests, held together by the expectation that explicit campaign promises will be upheld. That expectation is gone when a candidate changes his mind (or "thinks out loud") several times during a campaign. In effect, it is breaking campaign promises, and creates uncertainty within a coalition. I honestly don't understand why this should be considered an attractive quality.

The Board of Canvassers locked at 2 to 2 on the GOP objection to the recount. MI election law requires a 2 day waiting period following the Board's decision on an objection. Attorney General Schuette (frontrunner for the next GOP Gov nomination) has already filed litigation in the Court of Appeals and the MI Supreme Court calling for a halt to the recount, so depending on what the courts do, the recount could be stopped. 208 The story behind General Tso's chicken is this:

An American admiral visited Taiwan for a state visit in 1953, and the government chef preparing the banquets for him ran out of recipes and new ideas because his stay was extended. So the chef, who was born in Hunan, just invented a new kind of dishes based loosely on traditional Hunan spices. When the American admiral asked what the name of the dish was, the chef improvised the name "General Tso's Chicken" off the top of his head -- the name came from an actual General Tso, a famous 19th century Hunanese military leader. Bit there was no real connection between the 19th-century guy and the recipe -- it was just an off-the-cuff name the chef invented on the spot.

Later, that chef founded his own chain of fast food restaurants in Taiwan, and had the idea of putting his General Tso's Chicken recipe on the menu. It because hugely popular in Taiwan, and most other restaurants began to copy it.

Then, in the '70s, Chinese restaurants in the US, staffed by immigrants from Taiwan, began to feature it here too. Over time, it grew in popularity and became thought of as a "standard" Chinese dish. The recent explosion in popular of spicy Asian flavors (like Sriracha sauce on everything, etc.) added to the General Tso explosion.

The push now is that if you "identify" as the opposite sex then you can use their bathroom. So me as a dude wearing men's clothing and having facial hair, should be able to use the women's restroom if I claim to identify as a woman.

I think Trump might smack someone if they tried to tell him that.

You see and will see a lot of talk about how "wow Trump is realizing this is harder than it looks" I think this is 180 degrees wrong. I think Trump will find the job easy, and Pence will benefit enormously. Trump is unfettered by political norms.

I think half the "it's hard" is trying to nibble around the edges and maintain some semblance of political normalcy while thinking small and pretending to get things done. Trump isn't going to waste time with any of that crap. Trump is no conservative but Pence can move conservative issues like a freight train if they focus on big picture important things.

Rush has been alluding to this a bit the last few weeks. People are going to be knocked on their collective asses by the whirlwind fury at which things will move when Trump wants them moved. He's not going to waste time with BS like he is expected to and every president since Teddy Roosevelt has been expected to. The bully pulpit is in full effect.

It's refreshing to see this said every time it is said. I was baffled by the "Obama's so wicked smart" line the first time I heard it--I never saw evidence of some piercing, unassailable intellect, and the people around him seemed just as uninteresting as he did (and does). His speeches were candyfloss, and the whole lot was insubstantial.

257 The final two weeks of Trump's campaign, and even before that - were very very tight. No off the script remarks, no improvisation. He simply hammered certain points home.

This was always there for the taking - Hillary was an awful candidate and the issues were clearly on the side of Trump - all he had to do was stay on message and deliver.

He did in the final couple of weeks - before that, not so much.

I disagree though that he's improvising. He's got a plan, and he's executing it. Just because the inside beltways don't recognize it because it's not about buying off or selling off favors doesn't mean it's not a plan.

I agree, I don't think

Barky wasn't "relatively disliked" though. he had 55% support as of November this year.

I understand that's the only metric we have, but its pretty obvious that the "presidential approval" rating isn't "we like him" so much as "he's not annoying us right now." That is, it doesn't really measure approval at all, it measures how upset people are at the president. If they aren't: okay, he's fine.

And, given the demographics that pollsters and news organizations were using for the presidential polls, one wonders how accurate the "presidential approval rating" is, anyway.

So the same people that actually do cause the "harm" get rewarded.

Speculating on whether another candidate would have won this is as pointless as saying that Hillary actually won because she got more of the popular vote. We have no idea how the campaign would have played out with a different candidate so just assuming things would have played out in identical fashion and the issues would have been the same is pointless.

In that, he is like most people in America, so when confronted with homosexual marriage or tranny bathrooms, they go "no, just no" but cannot say why, and when shouted down are unable to formulate any sort of disagreement, so they just become quite or neutral to it in the face of raging confidence.

The North Carolina law was designed to prohibit lawsuits against businesses that required males to use a Desisnated male bathroom . Because there were episodes of not transitioned males going into female restrooms and when told to leave subsequently suing the business for discrimination . This never happened before until Obama and the social justice warrior brigade . And the ever expanding 14th amendment and the federal government requiring all letters of the alphabet to be covered under anti-discrimination. It's just impossible to know what would have happened had a different candidate been plugged into the Trump slot. Obama remains personally very popular but his policies are polling in around herpes level.

A different candidate might have lost Wisconsin but won Colorado. Or lost Michigan but won Nevada. Trump did better with blacks and latinos than Romney but Obama wasn't on the ticket. Who knows, maybe a different candidate would have done even better than Trump with those demographics.

The point is that we know Trump won, and we're presumptively attributing his win to his unorthodox campaign, making the assumption that no other candidate could have beaten Hilary Clinton (a highly beatable candidate) in any other way.

I just don't think that's true. I'm glad Clinton lost, and I think Trump played his hand brilliantly. But I neither believe that Trump was the only GOP candidate who possibly could have beaten her, nor do I believe that he still couldn't have beaten her had he done some things differently, that's all.

Posted by: looking closely at December 02, 2016 03:04 PM

Highly disagree. Who else would have won with Trumps map? He won in large part due to the upper Midwest voters who went for Obama twice and voters in rural areas came out in larger numbers then ever before.

This campaign would have been a referendum on social issues with any other GOP Candidate.

Trump worked super hard for every vote in a way which I have not seen any Candidate do in recent elections. Its wrong to take that from him due to your personal distaste.

If the one way valve isn't sealing you can wind up repumping the volume in the pipe between the pump and the highest point of the discharge line over and over again.

Got it. I think the "unorthodox campaign" issue is interesting, but not compelling. He won because he cultivated votes in an ignored demographic that sought heat and light in a candidate, and Trump provided in spades. I don't mean to be flip by observing the obvious, but I think that fact is key to my assertion--only Trump had the indignation (feigned or real), the brass, the chutzpah to catalyze that. None of the other Republicans could've done it--in fairness, simply put, they were candyasses by comparison.

shelter vs breeder?

Posted by: Deplorable votermom @vm on Gab at December 02, 2016 03:09 PM (Om16U)
====================================

Your best bet for non-allergy is a purebred poodle, and purebreeds are usually scarce at shelters. You could look, but you might want to check into breeders. Also - be aware that lots of people dump their problem pets in the shelter around the holidays. Particularly dogs with negative behaviors like peeing on the floor or humping visitors. People are having family stay over and they don't want problem dogs around. So if you go to a shelter, be aware that you might get a dog with some negative traits.

Breeder.
Mostly because a shelter dog doesn't have a traceable background, which is important if you need a non-shedder.

Florida?!! Would these Democrats give it a freaking rest?!! (I

What was the vote spread in Florida? I swear they are just doing this as a stalling tactic so the votes can't be certified in time for the Electoral College. This is insane, and bordering on lawlessness.

395 The thing is being a billionaire doesn't mean everything, but it does mean something. I mean, Mark Cuban is a billionaire, so what does that say?

The Dems convinced themselves that Trump was bankrupt, and that everything he touched was bankrupt. That certainly isn't true. But they thought it was.

396 So, I was in the hospital. and I had a TV that actually worked, so I tuned into Fox news which had on Megan McCain. I guess he's a regular? She's quite a firebrand on the choice of Mattis (very pro Mattis) and she made quite a few intelligent comments. She seems to like Trump.

399 "The gas stations around the plant, the fast-food restaurants, the
convenience stores, the HVAC company that maintains the plant's stuff,
the plowing company, the landscape company, the carboard distributor,
the sheet metal supplier, the copper coil maker, the electrical supply
houses, the fan motor makers......

The cocksucking media downplays 1,000 jobs, but it is a lot more than that.
"

------------------
This analysis does not include the supplier chain or service chain jobs.

Oh there is more and like Ace pointed out it is a double win.

Now instead of 1000 people collecting UE for 6 months at my estimate of $7.5 million, add in EBT, and all the other FREEEEEEEEEEEEE shit from government and lets just say $10 million cost for first 6 months.

PLUS, those employees keep paying federal, state, FICA taxes of $5 million (my est)in First 6 months.

Again, the $7 million in tax breaks costs nothing until they are used. That means no present cost, only future cost. IOW the $7 million could be $2 million if UT leaves.

So in just the first 6 months Trump's deal for saving 1000 jobs gives the government $17 million at ZERO cost.

Cherry on top: Carrier to spend $16million in upgrades for plant. MORE money for tax and possibly getting people out of unemployment and adding jobs in supplier chains and services.

That is a great deal and to all the "true conservatives" that do not understand that, I can't help.

400 318 Who knows anything about sump pumps?
And/or why they die an early death?

If the one way valve isn't sealing you can wind up repumping the volume in the pipe between the pump and the highest point of the discharge line over and over again.
Posted by: DaveA at December 02, 2016 03:10 PM (8J/Te)

Either running continuously or running dry kills 'em.

One way valves and/or actuating mechanism (The float ball connected to a switch), usually.

If they are running at low voltage, such as if they are hooked up via a 100' extension cord will kill the motor too.

Best of luck.

403 Questions about who could or couldn't have beaten Hillary, the weakest candidate the Dems are likely to field for years, are pure speculation.
(I personally find the argument that ONLY Trump could have won to be ludicrous.)

What we CAN say with absolute certainty is that no other GOP candidate's win would have made the Left cry so hard. No one else could have caused them THIS much excruciating pain.

It's a beautiful thing.

They gave me medication to bring it down and also gave me nitrogykcerine. Still have to see the handsome cardiologist next week so it's not all bed. :^) But the money this will cost us-We have insurance for a while but we still have to pay a lot I would have preferred to spend on a nice vacation.

Since our elites now think of themselves as the center of the universe, they don't know how to evaluate their failures. They repeat the same errors.
