Boycott Part 2: Destroy Kelloggs

In the last thread, eforhan wrote:

I'm a happy boycotter, but I wish these companies were more like Nissan:

"[Nissan] places ads in a variety of sites in order to reach as many consumers as possible."

"The placement of Nissan advertising is not intended to be a political commentary and there are no plans to change the advertising mix at this time," the company said.

Link.

I think that's what we'd like -- we'd like the Culture War fought in the fewest arenas as possible. We'd like to keep the war at the front lines -- just in the actual fields of politics and political thought.

We'd prefer if not every fucking consumer purchase were part of the War.

But that's not the way the left rolls. The left is determined to pressure all corporations to join them in the culture war, and most corporate personnel -- being largely socially liberal anway, and viewing compliance with the left's demands to be the path of least resistance-- tend to sign up to be part of the Left's Social Justice Army.

This is an amoral business decision. And frankly it makes sense as an amoral business decision -- because one side is making demands, taking hostages, and organizing boycotts, and the other side says things like "Leave the poor corporations alone" and "It's a business decision you have no right to interfere with" and "A corporation's relationship between themselves and the politcal left is between it and God Himself."

This is, for reasons I sketched out in the last post, utterly stupid and results in more and more corporations explicitly joining the left's Social Justice Brigades to impose the left's twisted religion on the whole of the country.

As I said: It's a rational business decision. Because when you look at the incentives, a company's incentives plainly lay on the side of going along with the left, because the right doesn't play this game out of misplaced "principle."

The left is a bully, the right is a patsy who will go along with anything, including its own denigration.

So what would any rational company do?

If you want to change corporate behavior, you have to change the incentives as far as picking sides in the culture war.

You have to stop giving corporations a free pass to hurt you merely because they've added up the plusses and minuses and the math says It's a smart business play to treat you like garbage.

You have to start using the same tactics and making the same demands that the left does.

Well, not the same demands -- what we'd really like is for corporations to declare themselves netural in these things, like Nissan has.

Not to make them partisans of the right. Just to keep the fuck out of it.

But we should use the same tactic -- if you defy us, we will punish you economically.

We will change the incentive scheme: It will no longer the case that you can give in to every leftist demand without negative consequence.

We will start imposing consequences on you for doing so.

The left has demanded Kellogg's stop advertising on Breitbart, and Kellogg's has eagerly joined the leftist army.

How long are we going to play this game where we accept that left can organize boycotts against corporations to forceably (or even not-so-forceably) enlist them in the leftist army in the Culture War, but we are to act "principled" and do nothing as the left continues organizing every institution, media group, and corporation as bases of operation to destroy us?

Kellogg's wants to be a part of their army -- fine. They they are now Enemies and to be treated as such.

Don't eat another damn thing made by these fascists.

As someone said -- forget who, maybe Kurt Schlichter -- Kellogg's chiefly sells to parents buying cereal for their kids.

Does Kellogg's really want to get into a #War with the part of the country that actually has children, siding with those that don't?

If so, that was a bad business decision -- or at least it should be made such, if we can get over our dreamy stupidity that if we just Act Better Than They Do they'll see the error of their ways and give up all the Winning Every Cultural Battle They Join thing.

Do you think people really give up on that which has proven time and time again to be a not only a winning stratagem, but an easy-win, automatic-gimme-win stratagem?

I'm tired of hearing the claim made by conservatives that corporations are essentially holy things that can never be punished for their "business decisions" -- while we see the same corporations using bullying punishment tactics against other companies and even private individuals.

They can take scalps, but it's some kind of weird violation of Reagan's Eleventh Commandment to take a corporate scalp in response?

I want to be left alone. And if a corporation is siding with the fascists who won't leave me alone, I have no obligation to keep peace with them.

If they want Peace, then they shall have Peace,

But if they want #War, let them have more #War than they can bear.

I don't think I buy anything from them, but I'd still love to make some sort of impact against them.

Remember, if you do, write to Kellogg telling them that you are a long term customer, that you're no longer purchasing their product, and why.

Them losing a box of sales every week or so isn't going to show up. Them getting a letter saying that you were going to buy hundreds more in the future might tell them something.

They are inevitable, and the only way the people of Kellogg can hope once more to live in peace and quiet at home, is to stop the war, which can only be done by admitting that it began in error and is perpetuated in pride.

But our side has usually never fought back. Again, as I tried to argue on Part 1, not because we wanted to turn the other cheek, but because our side doesn't have the time. If you are a parent with hungry kids and limited grocery time, do you want to spend time in the grocery store thinking about who to buy and who not to buy based on their political decisions. Ideally no. And so our side has avoided that. The left lived for it. But now, things are different. Because the left has now finally forced us to engage. So now maybe we will make the time. And it is now easier to get the information out than it was in years past.

I think corporations are going to find that this time its different.

You don't have to fight every battle - just a few. Just let them know that by taking sides they will lose. The rest of them will bug out.

I don't disagree.

For a while, it's been obvious that bowing to leftist pressure was the best way to go for corporations. It's seemed like the fastest way out of the fight.

Keeping them in the fight, their name in the news as a source of controversy, could be enough for individual corporations to suddenly say (at the behest of their stockholders/owners), "Never mind. We're not taking sides." It could then convince those who get the pressure in the future, "Oh, this isn't a quick fix. Maybe we should just say what Nissan said and let it be."

77 I've asked before, but will ask again. Is it time for these companies to bring back the concept of ultra vires acts and make charitable contributions illegal (I realize this is an advertising situation).

The one thing I always liked about Apple under Jobs was that one of the first things he did when he rejoined the company was to give up corporate giving.

There is less benefit now to corporations engaging in charitable giving as all giving can be scrutinized.

Many of the folks now running companies, came out of the Left Controlled Colleges 20 years ago.

They grew up in, and were educated in, the PC culture... so to them, it is the norm.

To them, Politics is their God... many are true believers... and like a religious zealot, their calculus is different.

They will do things based on belief, that makes no sense to those who do not believe as they do.

Just as an Islamic Terrorist believes Jihad is OK... and worth the price of blowing themselves up... these folks truly believe that the 'end' is worth the 'sacrifice'... especially when THEY are not the ones paying the price... their stockholders and customers are.

164 So my question is, perhaps to make this a little easier on everyone, is there a list of the most convenient targets (no pun intended) to go after? Corporations visible enough, in terms of size and subscription to the leftist agenda, that hurting them would give the others second thoughts? I feel like that might be a good first step in actually putting this into practice.

We are the Alt Right...

Just some of the Left, and some Pundits on the right... picked out a few Racists to smear the meme with that label...

But its like calling all Baptists bad, because of the Westboro Baptist Church...

And its really amusing when you try to correlate this with Islam.... ie the you can't smear Islam as Bad, just because a large minority of them are Jihadists...

1) I've made it clear to my wife that we don't shop at target. For anything. Doesn't matter what it is, who's registered there for a wedding, how great the deal is. They do not get any of our money.

2) Not buying Kellogs brand is a lot easier now that my wife and I are not eating breakfast (because GAINZ).

I don't feel the need to write any of them a letter. I prefer the insidiousness of tanking stock price and emergency board meetings.

See that's why I just want an "approved" list. If we're going to go this route, we need to make it simple, because as folks on our side keep pointing out, most of us have better things to do than keep track of who owns who that makes what these days.

I do not condone any such hate. Let me repeat this. I do not condone racism or bigotry.

The media venues you are abandoning are primarily those with a right / conservative leaning. Many (most?) do not contain nor condone such hatred, bigotry or malice.

It is no surprise the country is pretty evenly divided politically. Kellogg's making a move such as this is their right. I'm 100% "all in" for free enterprise. I'm also 100% "all in" on consumers being able to vote with their pocketbooks. If a company is going to enter a fray that is contrary to what I believe, I will take my business (my grocery dollars) and go elsewhere. Store shelves are full of alternatives.

One has to wonder the wisdom of alienating (that is what you are doing) 47%+ of your customers. Good luck with that. It isn't working so well for Target or GrubHub.

I strongly encourage you to retract your statements, apologize to everyone and re-evaluate your positions.

Until then, my dollars will be spent elsewhere.

246 As someone who works for Nestle, my feeling is that these multi-national conglomerates are simply following the same trajectory that nation-states have been following for the past 100 years. They love to experiment with top-down management; one set of rules for everyone, everywhere. They willingly subscribe to all the latest schemes that promise more productivity with less effort -- always via a system of information logging and continuous problem solving, in effect a search for the perfectability of man -- completely ignoring the local nuances of each workforce. All of which they back up with slogans and schemes that are right out of the the Marxist playbook. As these companies get larger and larger through acquisitions, they more and more resemble tiny nation-states themselves, with one central headquarters through which all decisions flow, followed by a number of smaller fiefdoms and suzerainties headed by loyal lieutenants, true believers all. Since the corporate structure takes on the outward aspects of a Marxist state, why is it a surprise that they're increasingly manned by leftists who grab their ankles at anything resembling the latest SJW crusade?

ace is right. The left is a bully. And the victim of bullying doesn't want a greasy, smooth talking lawyer to defend him, he wants a loudmouth brawler who is willing to punch and kick.

This helps the victim initially , but eventually, the victim himself, has to punch the bully in the nose.

255 This reminds me of the episode of Star Trek in which Kirk and the crew come across a pair of neighboring worlds that have been a war for two centuries and yet both planets look pristine. Kirk comes to find out it is a "virtual" war fought using computers which project casualties and issue lists to people living in the areas that have been hit by these virtual weapons. The populace then have to go to a local disintegration both to be killed. Kirk is horrified by it and destroys a booth causing the city elders to freak saying "Do you know what you have done? If the computers show that the people didn't get disintegrated, there will be real war." And Kirk is "yeah, so? Real war is ugly and you idiots have sanitized it. You're worried about it becoming ugly? Try to work on a peace accord. Or not. The choice is yours."

For years we have been quietly going to the disintegration booths.

300 There's a greater than 0 chance that Publix brand cereal is made by one of the major cereal companies.

This.

It's also possible that Brand X cereal is actually owned and marketed by Kelloggs.

The other possibility is that a third-party vendor makes all the major, minor, and off brands in the same factory. People would be surprised if they knew how often competing brands are made in the same factory, using the same equipment, and essentially the same recipes.

Things may have changed, but 20 years ago, all the chlorine bleach in the US was made at one of three regional factories. The only difference was the container because the formula is virtually the same for all brands.

And even rarer I have steak with all that.

And periodically I have pancakes with that good old Vermont Maple syrup. But that is more mess to clean up so not as often as the other stuff.

And I think ace has done a decent job lately of working to urge a boycott, without acting like like people who aren't able too, or are of the more "I would like to tune out of politics" are just as bad or worse than the companies he's calling for a boycott on.

So if he's not doing that, and others aren't doing that here either, I see no reason to act belligerent towards the call for boycotts.

I think the kind of boycott conservatives should practice is a defensive, reactive measure. 530 What Ace has described is not unlike the "iterated prisoner's dilemma" in Game Theory. In the iterated prisoner's dilemma, the best strategy to avoid being played for a sucker is the "tit for tat" strategy. That is, if they play fair then you play fair. But if they cheat then you cheat. Through this strategy, those wanting to play you for a sucker learn their lesson. To play fair while the other side cheats leads to the worst outcome for the side playing fair.

The Right has been played for suckers for far too long. #War.

555 This sort of encapsulates why I used to be pro gay marriage and pro choice and now I'm...not. The Left takes every. single. inch. and pushes it for miles. The Slippery Slope just never levels out.

Remember back a decade ago during the heated national debate over civil unions? A reasonable sop we attempted to give the left on gay rights. Some on the Right refused to give that inch up because, they argued, it was merely a way-station on the road to gay marriage. The Left railed and mocked those folks suggesting they adjust their tin-foil hats. Welp, ten years on and lookie what's legal now.

I refuse to give any more ground on social issues and I refuse to respect any "conservative" willing to give up that ground on my behalf. You think boys in girls bathrooms is the end of the road for leftist agitation? Nope, there's always some bold, new frontier to conquer. Well no more. I opt out.

562 Kelloggs can be brought down, especially if Post is neutral. My suspicion is Post is more liberal, just from the cereals they produce.

However, one company that can and should be brought down is GrubHub. Their customers are likely to be Trump supporters, or at least Republicans. Plus their customer list is available right on their website. It would be easy to get people to contact restaurants and tell them they will not be purchasing there as long as they are listed on GrubHub. This is likely to be a small portion of their business, compared to losing Trump supporters. There are probably also alternatives available.

568 Kellogg's announcement (via Bloomberg):
"We regularly work with our media-buying partners to ensure our ads do not appear on sites that aren't aligned with our values as a company," said Kris Charles, a spokeswoman for Kellogg, which also makes Frosted Flakes and Special K cereal. "We recently reviewed the list of sites where our ads can be placed and decided to discontinue advertising on Breitbart.com. We are working to remove our ads from that site."

The problem here is that they went out of their way to effectively denounce the values represented at Breitbart. This was their way to trumpet their virtue to the progressive horde. If they had simply pulled their ads with the fanfare, no one, including me, would care.

As Breitbart continues to respond, all of the Kellogg's company's dirty laundry will be dragged into the spotlight, e.g. donations to Black Lives Matter, an employee pissing on the rice crispies assembly line, Amnesty International's concerns about Kellogg's reliance on child and other forced labor to produce ingredients for their products. All of this would have remained quiet. Would have except for the progressives' need to trumpet their virtue so all may applaud. Well, that ship has sailed, and Kellogg's will rue the day they went out of their way to pick a fight with Breitbart.

573 I just sent Kelloggs the following message:

It saddens me to have to stop purchasing all products made my Kellogs, as I have been a loyal customer for, well, my entire adult life (I am now 50). One of the reasons I remained even more loyal to Kelloggs than to other brands is my Michigan roots. It made me feel good to support a Michigan company from my California home.

However, the recent decision to align your company with the political Progressive left leaves me no option. I can not in good conscience allow my money to fund a corporation that sees me as a lesser human for the crime of holding political opinions that differ from its own. With that in mind, I will seek to replace all Kelloggs products with those of your competitors until such time as you decide to take a neutral political stance.

Make no mistake, I respect the right of Kelloggs to take an explicitly Progressive public posture, just as I am sure you will respect the right of your conservative customers to change their spending habits based on said posture.

Regretfully,

The only thing their changing is that they are actually be more bold, as you pointed out in the first boycott post.

But while it's one thing (and easy) for the left to pointedly and focused-like-a-laserbeam single out Kelloggs and demand that they STOP advertising on a single outlet, what's the remedy? You can't pointedly focus-like-a-laserbeam on Kellogs to RESUME advertising on Breitbart. Well, I suppose you could, but how likely is that?

Liberals, who this fury is presumably meant for, don't read your blog, and certain suddenly out of fashion styles of conservatives like my own, who do read your blog, start increasingly seeing you as the right's brand of SJW. Most of the people who voted for Obama haven't heard much or any of the shit you get fired up about, and wouldn't have the framework narrative to infer meaning from it if they did. And a lot of the awful millennial SJWs of the Obama era have or will have gotten over it as they enter their 30s.

597 I've been on a self-imposed news diet for the past three weeks. Didn't cut it out completely, but have just limited consumption to a scan of the headlines every so often to make sure nothing catastrophic is happening. One thing I've learned, and in response to the author's comment "I just want to be left alone." is that you will realize that you are being left alone once you take yourself out of the altered reality that is online political theater, with it's outrages of the hour, pitting the angels (us) versus the demons (them), no matter if it's left or right political theater. Try just getting up in the morning, going to work, loving those closest to you, helping someone you don't know, and it will do wonders for your grasp on actual reality.

Just a thought.

I work for a trucking company that distributes most all of Kellogg's products nationally. They cut back the number of dedicated drivers 20% to Kellogg's because demand is way down. People just aren't eating cereal as much anymore. Especially millenials. Leads me to think they would be *especially* susceptible to a boycott.

601 The right has no choice but to fight back, if most are like me in the past something like this would have angered me but not moved me to action. No more, the left will wage a war of simple attrition now that Trump has won, take out as many of his supporters regardless of collateral damage and by any means necessary. Civil liberties are treated as toilet paper by the left as they will wipe their ass with them in order to "cleanse" the right. I will remove all Kellogg products from our house and will not buy another product again until they push back on the lefts fascism. Its a numbers game and we all need to get involved because it is only going to escalate.

605 It seems to me that everyone is missing the point about boycotting corporations. When a corporation places an ad, it is doing so to promote its sales. Presumably it makes a study and reaches a determination about the efficacy of its ad buy. This is a rational business decision and is in keeping with its fiduciary duties.

But when a corporation decides to boycott a website in the face of its own research, what is really happening is that someone in the corporation is placing his or her preferences above the interest of the corporation. In this instance, the corporation is being employed to further the interests of that decision maker.

The point is that a corporation that engages in such boycott activity is no longer a corporation in the sense of honoring its fiduciary duties. Therefore, when one boycotts a firm that engages in such boycotts, one is only boycotting the decision maker.
