Faraway
Andrew Wyeth

Most of you would instantly recognize Christina's World. And, probably, his nudes, which have always disturbed me. I want to pull a sheet over some (but not all) of the women, because the works seem voyeuristic without even a semblance of sexuality.

13 Oh, yay for a Wyeth!

He's my favorite painter, Hemingway is my favorite author, and I have a theory that unites the two.

Each got dismissed by the critics. Hemingway because his sentences were simple and direct, Wyeth because you could tell what his painting was just by looking at it.

Each, though, followed the iceberg rule. 90% of it was below the surface. There is always something haunting in the back of a Wyeth painting.

Also, I love the nudes. They're not necessarily sexualized but the human body is the best subject ever.

If you see one in person what looks like photorealism becomes abstract impressionism up close. Wyeth understood the human eye in ways that I can't conceive of. His flesh tones are little dapples of purple, blue, and green in tones that I didn't think contained those colors.

But then, my taste in art runs towards painters like Mucha, Bougereau and Alma-Tadema, so don't go by me.

I have a guess. (Looking things up is cheating). The Krautish word for brandy is Brandwein. Literally burnt wine, but brandy is a liquor distilled from wine. (I think, I'm kind of sure).

I think Brandywine is an archaic word for brandy, from the Krautish/Anglo mixing of things.

The listed system requirement start at Windows 8.1 which, like all Microsnot Upgrades increased the amount of RAM need to run drastically over the previous versions. They list the min system RAM as 2G which means you really need 4 to 6 minimum.

I have 1G on my board and 1G on my video card. So likely it would not run very well. All that besides costing $176 for the program. Hell, for not much more I can get a new computer (cheapo) with Windows 10.

Naming of Brandywine Creek, per Wikipedia --

The creek's current name may be from an old Dutch word for brandy or gin, brandewijn, or from the name of an early mill owner, Andreas Brainwende or Brantwyn.

BTW, it is Brandywine Creek, not Brandywine River, throughout it's length. It's a "tell" that someone is not from this area if they refer to it as Brandywine River.

91 Wyeth is technically wonderful, and a lot of his stuff does tell a story, but it is so remote, and in a way so void of depth.

The main emotion I feel from his work is isolation. Not so much solitude, which is expanding without pressures alone, but merely being alone with not being able to expand or enjoy.

Technically wonderful. Almost rustic grandma-moses in feel, but remote.

98 And if you're wondering why a three-year-old would have seen a PG-13 movie like Spiderman, I can tell you.

My mother-in-law died earlier that year. We went up for the funeral, and then back two weeks later for our usual summer visit. When we got there, my FIL said he had rented some movies for the kids - Superman (Chris Reeves) and Spiderman (Toby whatshiscan). My kids are all going yay! and I'm thinking uh oh, that Spiderman is PG-13 and my kids are 3 - 11.

So my FIL then says, "you guys can watch them right now, if it's okay with your mom" and all eyes swivel to me. Of course, I'm not going to tell my poor FIL who just lost his wife that the Spiderman movie is inappropriate for them, so I just smiled weakly and nodded.

He obviously never looked at the ratings. And for my sins, I got a sassy three-year-old.

119 I finally see what's happening here. You're going to expose the Horde to many different styles and methods of art; an education of sorts, a crash course in Art History. And only after they have fully sampled the full gamut of the best (and occasionally, worst) that the world of art has to offer, THEN you lay the full Elmore on them. Only then will they have the knowledge and experience to understand and appreciate just how great an artist he really is.

I have to say, what a fantastic plan. It's genius, really, and a great service to art. ....And humanity.

I had the same problem (an 800 MHz machine on a motherboard that "maxed out" at 2 GB, graphics card was 500 KB), and ended up buying a 3.5 GHz "Cyberpower" system with a motherboard that will take 32 GB of memory, including a graphics card with 4 GB of memory.
That cost me $600 (a Christmas special last year), but I figure I'm good for another 8-10 years, or until death us do part.

The one thing I'd recommend is to avoid the AMD processor -- every machine I ever installed (before I retired) died early because of the heat generated by that brand processor. I'm running an Intel core i5 (MSI motherboard), and it never gets hotter than about 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rather, I did so only after a great deal of research and prayer.

Because he was himself an immigrant and the victim of prejudice and discrimination both in Ireland and in the United States, and because he was the bishop of a largely immigrant community that suffered from the same discrimination from which he had suffered, Archbishop Hughes was passionately devoted to America's immigrants. Therefore, when he founded Saint John's College (Fordham University) in 1841, he did so to create a school that would make it possible for the immigrants whom he served to receive an education that would both confound their enemies and enable them to take their rightful place in American society.

Buckley's is nice, but kind of chopped up for seating. My work group did a dinner there several years ago and I think we had about two dozen people in the room; we might have been able to do three dozen.

Brandywine Prime has two dining rooms that seat 36 and 42 persons.

I just put together a cheap Dell configuration for $350 with 8 gig of memory. What is funny is that Walmart has the same configuration for $369 so I am wondering what the difference is. Probably shipping.

It will probably obsolete in 5 years with Microsnot Windows 40.3 which requires 1T of ram and 800T hard drive to hold the massive garbage-ware program that includes the new butt-sniffing brown bag software.
So I will have to think about it. Especially since I need to get these taxes done soon. Probably go ahead and do them on wife's computer.

This build has Thunderbird Mail bundled with it. I'm not using it, since this is my "away from home" computer, and I just use my home ISP's Webmail service while away. I can read, and respond to, e-mails, while leaving them on the server. Then, once home again, I can download them all into my home computer, so as to have an uninterrupted record.

I suppose there is a way to "sync" Thunderbird between two different machines, but I have never ventured there. I have copied complete "profiles" over when changing computers, or hard drives, and it is a chore.

I personally use Balsa, because I run it on the beater "for meetings and desk visits" netbook at work, and the default one (Thunderbird? Evolution?) has so much flashy crap that the actual message pane was like four lines high on that little screen. Balsa reminds me of Eudora, if you remember that one. Powerful but clean.

I did always find that stupid. Just a dumb thing that the implemented after the All Star game really blew one year and it went to extra innings and they ran out of pitchers. Kind of like how the NFL tried to give the Pro-Bowl some extra kick by putting it before the Super-Bowl and making it a draft type of game instead of AFC vs NFC.

Face it, its a crap game with no meaning or impact to the players. And you aren't going to get the same product as what you will for an actual game. That's just how it is.

I've always been fascinated by the left's obsession with Cuba. It has long been their ideological touchstone. They never got tired of pointing out the enormous success of the Castro government in creating a wonderland for the people, healthcare and education for the masses.

It was all a lie, of course, led my the useful idiots in our media. And it's all beginning to crumble.

Cuba is and has been since Castro and Che took over. a prison camp. The idyllic society could only be enforced with bullets and bayonets, prison camps and mass murder. It's all going to fall apart without Castro and the horror of that place will be exposed.

The 60's radicals who led the effort here are in full retreat. Obama was their high watermark and their downfall. Trump's election is far more than a change from Democrat to Republican, it is a rejection of the socialist policies the international left has tried to foist on us for generations for a more historically accurate nationalism and return to normal morals.

Let's hope we don't blow it.

Heh. I'm using Linux right now. Wonderful? Hell if I know. It just works, and it was dead-nuts easy to install and use. I'm no way at all a Linux nerd, and to use this particular build of Linux Mint, you don't have to be. It has a graphic desktop that is very easy for a long-time Windows user to transition to. And it cost zero dollars. I installed this one on a used Acer desktop purchased from a friend, which had a buggy install of Win7 in it. I fired up the Win7, used it to download and burn the LinuxMint install DVD. Then I booted Mint from the DVD, played with it for ten minutes, and then told it to wipe the the hard disk and do a clean install of Mint. Alll there was to it.

So wonderful? I dunno. But it is indeed a practical alternative to Windows for non-nerds to use.

In other words, the republican party has noticed the major fund raising being done by Stein and thought it was a good idea to copy it. The guy was getting pissed that I told him I had sent all the money I was going to during the election and the answer was no.

Michigan just certified the election two days ago after three weeks of canvassing by election officials. Stein is going to "steal" the electoral votes now from Michigan in a recount? A recount is going to significantly change the vote tally after the election officials have spent the last three weeks counting it?

I would support that, but realistically, I don't think you can effectively enforce it.

I mean someone can simply mail a check from an American bank to a Mexican and then they cash it at their local bank. Or there's now all sorts of online banks, credit cards, Paypal, etc. It's not just Western Union anymore.

But if you cut off the main magnet : jobs, with something like E-Verify. And then make sure you outlaw all government benefits and actually enforce it.

If you just changed the federal law where public schools "have to" take in illegals, that would cure most of it over night.

Andrew's use of color is pleasant and relaxing. The scenes seldom have hard edges; everything is rounded (not just Helga) or worn like old stone work. His paintings lack the dynamic quality of his father's but they are effective in a contemplative way.

I don't care how much judge shopping they do, they will not find a court allowing them to "interpret" votes , divine votes, etc. Votes are votes. Blank is blank.

My understanding of Michigan's recount laws is that the campaign requesting the recount must demonstrate that individual precincts were compromised in some manner and need to be recounted. I don't believe Michigan law allows them to ask for an entire state recount just for giggles.

Considering Michigan just certified and can demonstrate to a judge that they had canvassers supervise the final vote tally at each precinct, essentially a recount of each electronic scan machine's entries and paper ballots, Stein is going to have a time getting an order to recount the entire state again.

After Hillary! lost, that right there, that moment of shock upon finding out that a substantial portion of your expectations and beliefs were wrong-

should've led to retrospection, re-thinking, and possible enlightenment, but-

NOPE.

The Dims and their allies went straight to the outrage machine and stolen election fantasies to keep that time of retrospection and reconsideration from happening.....cuz, hey, i gots to get paid is all the leadership of the left is about.

Jill Stein's nonsense proves it...and actually proves that the rank and file left are so braindead that this is indeed the correct course of action,

It's hard to see how we as a nation can come together and thrive when roughly 50% of us are hyper-emotional, irrational true believers in a system of demonstrable failure.

Look what's happening in France. The choice looks like it's going to be between right and further right. Look what is happening in Italy. Look what happened in Hong Kong where there were open protests in the face of tyranny and for democracy. This stuff is happening all over.

And I definitely wouldn't undersell what is happening in the US. Other countries may mock us but when we move, many follow.

If you look at the post WWII Marxist movement that started in the Frankfurt School, was supported by the Soviet Union, and spread to America in schools like Columbia and U of Chicago, you can see a straight line to the 60's radicals who have taken over the Democrat Party. They forced out the more conservative Blue Dogs and went hard left. Obama represented the zenith of the movement.

But his policies have been widely repudiated. While he personally retains the charisma often associated with leftwing tyrants, his party has been hollowed out and they are spasming to the left not having a clue how to respond.

None of what has happened over the last 60 or so years happened by accident. It was a movement, a school of thought, and it has failed in location after location. They are in decline because it was a movement always destined for failure. I'm just glad I lasted long enough to see it begin to crumble.

I tend to think businesses that have "something to lose" tend to be better about complying with the law.

Obviously some fly by night landscaping operation is going to risk it, but say a multi-billion dollar hotel chain? They are going to want to comply.

It's a multi prong strategy, but right now, unless you voluntarily go with E-Verify, it's actually ILLEGAL to check someone's immigration status with the current federal forms.

367 This is only the tip of the iceberg. John Cullberson, Rep from Houston, has already forced the DOJ to notify some sanctuary cities that they are in violation of federal law. And he has pointed out the the sanctuary cities not only will lose federal funding going forward, they may be subject to repay funds they have received in the past. We are talking many, many billions in some cases. Going to be quite the showdown.
=====

Culberson was pretty happy with getting Lynch to issue the letter. He is right, you HAVE TO GET IT ON THE RECORD FIRST.

In a nation of laws, you can't just hand-wave you must establish the record. Congressional hearings aren't just a timesuck, they are the only way to establish the record and honest disagreements.

371 Ok, well I guess I should read my local papers more.

Steins request has been filed with the state board of elections and they are waiting now for Trump's lawyers to file their objections. If the recount goes ahead, and it looks like it will, Michigan will recount every single precinct by HAND with paid volunteers.

Ingham county alone estimates it will take one week to hand count every ballot and it will cost just that county alone $45,000 in pay and table , facility rental, food, etc.
The state estimates it could cost up to $12 M for this recount. Apparently, there appears to be no law preventing this, despite what I read earlier.

I'm shocked. I really am. Stein says exactly as was posted above, they want to see if the machines didn't count a tiny dot on the ballot that may or may not be someone's "intended" vote.

My understanding of Michigan's recount laws is that the campaign requesting the recount must demonstrate that individual precincts were compromised in some manner and need to be recounted. I don't believe Michigan law allows them to ask for an entire state recount just for giggles.

Yep. It really is silly to think these guys haven't been doing stuff. They have. It's just that they had a widely out of control Executive that refused to obey the law.

There has been a lot of groundwork laid for things to start happening relatively quickly in a number of areas.

So they find a person that does have a green card here and then they use that person to send checks to Mexico?

I just know I worked in a bank while I went to college, and they took Mexican IDs. This was pre 9/11, but everything I've heard is an illegal getting a bank account today is not difficult. We had heavy clientele that were not US citizens.

I just think the idea of shutting down international wire transfers sounds like an easy solution, but so does making drugs illegal. Just very easy to transfer money across the world.

I thought to get a hand recount in Michigan, you have to submit proof or substantial suspicion that fraud had actually taken place. Stein herself has said they have no concrete evidence of fraud. So it sounds like it's maybe judge's discretion?

No. Which is kind of why I did upgrade. I play games. Also Windows 7 is limited to 16GB of RAM unless you buy Ultimate version, or/and maybe the one step under best version whatever its called. So even if you have 32 GB or more of RAM on your set up its only using 16 GB. Windows 10 doesn't have that limit, or its not supposed to at least.

I read your Holmes piece and quite liked it. I did not solve the mystery on my own.

I noticed that you tightened up some loose shit in the Conan Doyle canon; to wit, Watson's wandering wound. In the first Holmes book, A Study in Scarlet, he complains of a wound to his shoulder. In later works, the wound was to his leg. You gave him two wounds, presumably incurred at the same time. One wonders if he might not have been squatting to relieve himself when accosted by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune such that a single bullet may have produced both wounds. Similarly, you hinted at another conundrum in the canon, Mrs. Watson, or should I say the Mistresses Watson. There are certain inconsistencies in the character in the canon that cause one to suspect there may have been more than one. Although not directly addressed, you made it clear that Watson had an eye for the ladies.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

My only criticism is that you could have been more clear regarding the motive for the impersonation of "Colin". I think I understand. He wished to disassociate himself from his partners in crime once a murder had occurred without himself incurring what his "brother" incurred and therefore sought to involve Holmes to overturn the checkerboard, so speak.

In short, I very much enjoyed this addition to the Holmes literature.
