ESPN's Subscriber Numbers Plummet for Second Straight Month

They lost 550,000 subscribers in November, which follows October's losses of 629,000 subscribers. These numbers are per Nielsen. Though ESPN challenged Nielsen's numbers last month, Nielsen reviewed them but still found big losses for ESPN's subscriber numbers.

[T]he worst month in the history of ESPN has now been followed up by the second worst month in ESPN history. ESPN has now lost a jawdropping 1.176 million subscribers in the past two months.

Putting that into perspective, that means nearly 20,000 people a day are leaving ESPN for each of the past two months.

If that annual average subscriber loss continued, ESPN would lose over seven million subscribers in the next 12 months. And at an absolute minimum, these 1.176 million lost subscribers in the past two months will lead to a yearly loss in revenue of over $100 million.

According to Nielsen ESPN now has 88.4 million cable and satellite subscribers, a precipitous decline from well over 100 million subscribers just a few years ago

...

The rapid decline -- and apparent escalation -- in cable and satellite customers abandoning the bundle is the biggest story in sports, and there isn't a close second. That's why I've been writing about it for the past several years.

He goes on to analyze ESPN's business model. ESPN is set to pay $7.3 billion in broadcast rights to various sports organizations this year. This is all contractual; they can't get out of it. ESPN can afford to pay that amount only because they have huge subscriber base and they charge every single cable subscriber in America $7 per month (which, of course, you can almost never get out of paying).

The broadcast rights are ESPN's selling point, but also a huge cost. If ESPN makes less money, they're still on the hook for that massive rights cost. ESPN is still making a lot of money (just less of a lot of money), and will make money for the next five years, but if people keep cord-cutting and abandoning ESPN, at some point, ESPN just won't be able to pay such huge amounts for broadcast rights, which then undermines their whole raison d'etre: Who wants to watch a "sports channel" that doesn't broadcast big sports?

ESPN used to be like that, 30 years ago, featuring a lot of pro bowler league and other cheap-to-buy broadcast rights. In fact, it used to look a lot like "The Ocho." (If it's almost a sport, we've got it here). I can't see them going backwards back to that. Not while extorting $7 per month from every cable subscriber in America.

Most cable companies you can't say "get rid of ESPN and MSNBC, but keep everything else!", so it's mostly people simply leaving the cable TV model.

Posted by: rickb223 at November 30, 2016 11:25 AM (sUwfN)

98 We cut the cord years ago, but I still went to their site for the Dodgers, Hawkeyes and AF Falcons (never teach jocks programming language, the site was awful). But this year, every time I managed to catch the actual channel, it was NFL all the time! Opening Day for the MLB? Talking NFL Draft. All-Star Game? Obsession over NFL summer training. MLB playoffs, which featured the Cubs about to make history? Wall-to-wall talk about what NFL player tweeted what. I even tried to ditch ESPN entirely and get MLB.tv, but you know what? You can only get it if you've already got a cable subscription to "the sports networks" and even then you might be subject to blackouts!

Yeah, I am DONE with ESPN in all forms.

Ha! I was discussing with Bander the other night that the X Games provide scientific proof that men's brains and women's brains are completely different.

You see, a man looks at a snowmobile, looks at a ski slope and goes "Hey! I know! I'll take the snowmobile down the ski slope and do acrobatics in the air when I go flying off a mogul! What? How am I going to practice that? I'll build a ramp and a mud pit and take the snowmobile off the ramp and land in the mud! I mean OBVIOUSLY."

A woman hears that and says "You are going to die."

Mind you, I love the X Games, they're a ton of fun and, sure, sure, there are women who participate in them. But coming up with the events themselves? Yeah, that's a guy thing.

I would tend to agree, but I do think the political stuff is giving people a reason to completely cut it. Now they are not just cutting it because they don't watch it much, but they are making a statement. Sort of helps in that process.

106 With numbers like this, now you know why ESPN is buying the MLB streaming service.

Why would ESPN buy MLB's streaming service? Simple, it is the company every goes to to manage their streaming services. NHL, HBO, and WWE all use MLB for their online streaming packages. HD quality streaming, VOD programming, DVR features on live programming, and the ability to watch home or away feeds. The cost? MLB and WWE are about $120 each a year, $10 a month.

If colleges and the NFL went to packages like this, I would drop most of my cable package in a heartbeat.

I personally turn off any of the home remodeling or buying shows episodes that feature gays buying their home so they can start a family, etc.

I don't require HGTV to boycott gay couples. In return I don't like it when they boycott/cancel shows because of the host's traditional beliefs.

Right.

The advertising contracts are not long-term.

Yeah, that chick they got singing the song now really gets one ready for some football.

And I blame ESPN/Disney for all the ads in football now. Before they bought MNF, the games rarely went to commercial after a kick or a punt. They paid so much and, to pay for it, they stuffed even more commercials in.

And everyone followed suit.

Now, you see more commercials than actual football.

Posted by: garrett at November 30, 2016 11:25 AM (MQZBa

Uh, no. That would be Nascar itself. When the year end champion was winning without ever having to win a race, and simply racked up points, they had to do something to change it.

So they went to the "Chase". Most Nascar fans like the new format. You can have someone who has done well throughout the year, but it comes down to single elimination for the championship during the last ten races. Meaning you have to race to win, not just place in points. Much better racing.

Nascar has many other problems, none of which will be solved easily or without great pain. IMO, the season is way too long, some of the tracks such as Michigan have to have additional car design or track design changes, multi car team owners should be prohibited, IMO, and ticket prices are exhorbitant for the average fan.

198 I even tried to ditch ESPN entirely and get MLB.tv, but you know what? You can only get it if you've already got a cable subscription to "the sports networks" and even then you might be subject to blackouts!

Posted by: pookysgirl

Um what? That is just flatly wrong. The entire point of MLB.tv is that you can stream the games without any kind of cable/satellite subscription. There is absolutely no need for a cable subscription to "the sports networks" in order to buy the MLB.tv premium package.

Now. That being said, there are all kinds of blackout restrictions if you live in a local tv area for a MLB team and if you are trying to dump cable and go to MLB.tv instead, nope, you are SOL. So that may be what you mean. But other than that, no.

Hell, MLB.tv is probably the most cost effective streaming subscription. Every out of market game for every team for $110 a year. If you go single team, it's $85 a year. That's, what, just over 50 cents a game for single team?

That's the model that I think live sports will end up using. Want baseball? MLB.tv. Like tennis? Tennis Channel Plus. NBA? League Pass. NHL? Center Ice. NFL? Sunday Ticket. Soccer? Move to Europe.

Do that and a la carte programming and let people pay for what they want.

ESPN, otoh, pays real dollars for content and went on a bit of a binge in the past decade, paying more and more for the same things, thus the increase in "shows" featuring lots of screaming fools - they're cheap filler content.

The rise in “subprime” car loan delinquencies is a “significant concern”, according to researchers at the New York Federal Reserve, which point out how the market continues to grow even as the number of borrowers in arrears is rising.

In an article on the NY Fed’s Liberty Street Economics blog, two of the central bank’s researchers explore the latest quarterly report on US household debt, and pull out some worrying trends.

The auto loan market is growing strongly, reaching $1.135tn in the third quarter, and 2016 looks like it will be the strongest since at least 1999, when the Fed’s data begins. Most of the loans are made to highly creditworthy borrowers, those with an Equifax credit score of 760 or above.

But the pile of loans for “subprime” borrowers, with scores below 620, has climbed sharply in recent years, after understandably slumping in the wake of the financial crisis. The subprime car loan market surpassed its pre-crisis peak last year, and has grown to about $275bn 2016,

I mean, you can't just stop subscribing to ESPN. It is usually part of a tier that includes other garbage. So not sure that this is an entire damning of the channel itself.
The advent of cord cutting isn't just about people going all protesty. It is also about the fact that the economy still sucks and things like cable tv are the first to get nipped. That nipping is even easier with cable because it is something that you don't have to entirely get rid of but can just tier down.

LONDON (AP) - The Bank of England's new plastic 5-pound note is stronger, cleaner and safer - but apparently not suitable for vegetarians.

Vegans and vegetarians are calling for the new bank notes, which have only been in circulation for two months, to be replaced because they are made with a substance derived from animal fat.

The Bank of England confirmed on Twitter that the notes contain "a trace of a substance known as tallow" - a rendered form of animal fat, processed from suet, which is sometimes used in soaps and candles.

An online petition against the notes has been getting attention Wednesday. The petition says the use of tallow is "unacceptable to millions of vegans, vegetarians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others in the U.K."

Most of the network that runs the day to day operations really don't give a shit about how many conservatives are pissed off and viewers that are leaving.

It's the same with newspapers and basically every form of tv media in this country.

So this type of slant will be par for the course for a long time.

MLB.TV took all their talent and added more. Made it a fun channel to watch. They made Baseball Tonight look like amateurs and borning.

That model should be followed by others to destroy ESPN.
The NCAA could create their own channel, but they won't because the Administrations make so much money from ESPN.

ESPN is turning NCAA sports and the NFL into the Toxic corrupt Pro Boxing, which killed that sport.

I think Hillary Clinton's statement tonight about being the president of all of the people, again, we have our differences since the beginning of our country. It's a legitimate difference. What is the role of government, et cetera, federal, state, local?

But, also, we have respect for other people's points of view. And I think that that has to really come across in what Hillary Clinton says tonight.

She needs no advice from anyone. You know, she's an experienced public figure. But there has to be no doubt that this isn't about Democrats or Republicans. That's minor. It's about America. It's about the vows of our -- honoring the vows of our founders, respecting the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and honoring the aspirations of our children and their future.

I have always thought that your box sends some kind of signal back, in order to verify what channels you are paying for. So, they should also be able to tell what channel you watching throughout the day. Why would they still be paying Nielsen at all?

I have the bottom of list package. If they offered everything Ala-cart, they would get a lot more money out of me.

"Well, you know what? If you'd rein in that Colin Kaepernick clown of yours, maybe people would come back to the NFL, and we'd both start making money again."

"Really, John? How would fans coming back to the NFL help you? It's not like you actually pay attention to NFL. Do you have plans to become a sports channel again? I mean, besides whining about concussions?"

"Oh, fvck you, Roger, just fvck you. You're letting your protesters drive away exactly the kind of people who care about your sport. Don't you know anything about demographics?"

Also be transparent about the blackout rules. If you dig and dig and dig, you can find out that if you are within a tv area, you will *never* be able to watch your local games. That's what people want and that's what they won't get.

There are already 3+ cable channels that you can turn to if you want to hear discussions about politics. But the ESPN talent wants to make your viewing of sports contests conditioned upon their right to deliver lectures to the audience. Adults tend not to like this.

554 535 ESPN is dumb if it's going to allow its on air talent to air their (uniformly leftist) political beliefs to a captive audience who is tuning in to see football or basketball.
There are already 3+ cable channels that you can turn to if you want to hear discussions about politics. But the ESPN talent wants to make your viewing of sports contests conditioned upon their right to deliver lectures to the audience. Adults tend not to like this.

they do save you 25 cents a month on your utility bill.

So basically, it will take you decades to recoup that cost. And the appliances aren't rated to last that long.

559 ESPN is and has been moving towards killing baseball.

Sporting News used to have lots of baseball, so did Sports Illustrated. Then about 30 years ago they had less and less and now its amazing if more than one page has anything about baseball. ESPN never did have much, one show and a quick mention once in a while, then football news even in the off season.

Dishwashers. New dishwashers are "effecient" as fuck. Uses little water, less energy on the drying cycle. And the detergents are phosphate free.

Make sure that it really contains trisodium phosphate (Na3PO4).

There is a service available that bypasses this and they constantly work to stay ahead of Netflix.

I can't remember the name but I'll describe it. For 40 bucks a year, it is a platform that takes every single TV and movie Netflix offers across the globe into one platform to browse and watch with identical Netflix platform. Search for ways to bypass Netflix VPN on the internet and it should pop right up as the best way to get around that problem.

Oh? I hope you're right but I don't know how you would judge that, especially since most of them have never voted. And I have no idea how they voted this year.

The most conservative generation is actually the Baby-Boomers, the only age cohort to vote against Obama in both 2008 and 2012. Even when they were young and therefore most prone to foolish idealism, they went solidly for Nixon over McGovern.

There's no way to unbundle the BBC from the TV you pay for. You're supposed, by law, to pay for a 'TV licence' every year; the money goes to the BBC. Total anachronism. People go to jail for not paying. I don't pay. #fuckthebbc

594 ESPN is owned by ABC and Disney. ABC is how they got their rights to NBA and NFL games. If ESPN falls in revenue, they will just switch the broadcasts to ABC.

You can get cable without ESPN, but they tend to be more basic broadcast only, or broadcast plus a few channels. For example, I can get USA, AMC, CSPAN, Disney, CNN, FoxNews, Cartoon, Showtime, Food, HGTV, and some more in a basic package.
