So-
An Asian concubine and a turtle walk into The Lafayette bar and the bartender says "What'll you have?" So, the Asian concubine looks at the turtle, then says "I'll have a Sloe Gin Fizz." Then the turtle looks at the Asian Concubine and says, "I'll have a "Slippery Nipple". And the bartender says, "I think you're in the wrong place. I'm not a bartender and this isn;t The Lafayette bar. This is a gay massage parlor. So..." The Asian concubine says, "Welp, there's nothing here for me. I'm out." And she leaves. So, the turtle looks at the gay massage guy. And the gay massage guy looks at the turtle. And the turtle says, "In that case, I'd like a Slow Chin Jizz." "With a Baltimore Cork Popper?" says the gay massage guy. "Of course." says the turtle. So, they go to the backroom and have a lovely time and six months later get gay married and live happily ever after. Posted by: naturalfake at November 30, 2016 09:45 AM (9q7Dl) 8

There are few works of the Ashcan School I would put on the wall but I find them interesting. I don't know if they reflect the NYC of the time or if my impression of NYC of that time derives from those paintings.
I prefer Hopper to Sloan but there is no doubt that Sloan captures the scene he wants. My problem with the movement is the deliberate, rough brush work Sloan uses. It always seems to mean there is little bright or beautiful in life; ugliness is the norm. Also, I don't like New York or any large city. Guess I'm a small town boy at heart. Posted by: Muldoon at November 30, 2016 09:58 AM (wPiJc) This post triggered me. :-)Back in the day, when my older sister was a struggling young mother, she was on WIC for a time. The WIC people gave her formula and milk, which really helped, but they also insisted on giving her these ginormous blocks of cheese. I mean big, 5 pound logs of it. She told them she didn't need it but they made her take it along with the formula and milk. So every week she was getting this cheese. She could never use it all, so she used to bring it to our house, and I remember during that time we always had these great big blocks of cheese around, and eating lots of sandwiches made of that orange government cheese. I live in a building built in the 60's. My place itself is very cute and I love it, but the building itself is a big unattractive block. I do sometimes miss the built-in bookshelves, the wooden beams. the intricate detailing on the ceiling, the hardwood floors and all the other little details that gave my previous residence (built in the 1920's) such character. I even had a milk chute outside my door and a niche for the old fashioned telephone. But my present place is in a better neighborhood, has many more windows and gets much more light and that counts for a lot. Posted by: Donna and V. One day my daughter and I stopped in for something and he was working the register that day. So we go in his line to say hi. Then, the woman in front of us drops about 200 or more of those little single serving envelopes of koolaid on counter. My poor brother had to swipe each one of them. Then she hands over her EBT card to pay. When she left I asked him if that happened often. My first thought was that it was related to mixing drugs or something sinister like that. Not to think the worst of people, but his store is near a rough area and he can tell you they have some shady stuff happen sometimes with the food stamp crowd. There was a woman in the 19th century who spent her life manning (so to speak) the lighthouse. The light had to be replenished with kerosene after dark so she would carry buckets filled with kerosene up to the top every 4 hours. I've been up those steep, winding, narrow stairs. Heh. My brother works at a grocery store. But even he had no idea what that was about. Weird.

I love lighthouses. One year, we took the kids to see one that you can actually go up in. It's really small, so they only take a few people up at a time. The rest wait on the bottom floor, where they have a small fishing museum which has primarily, if you listen to my kids, fish hooks. Even though we got there at 4:00, when it came to be our turn to go up, it was 5:00 and closing time and therefore they wouldn't take us up, no way, no how. My kids tease me about that fishing museum until this day. This was in Maine, by the way. No surprise. Posted by: bluebell at November 30, 2016 10:48 AM (Zokmo) 262

Bander, have you ever been up in the Scituate lighthouse? They open it up once a year, during Heritage Days. I have never been in it, but we go there a lot when we go up.
No, I've never been in it but I love it. My first post separation shack was on Lighthouse Road about a hundred yards from it. I've been wanting to tell this story, but I thought we ran out of lighthouse thread. There's a local legend about the "Army of Two". In the war of 1812 the British were coming to sack Scituate. The militia was elsewhere training for something. The town was undefended. The lighthouse keeper's daughters, Abigail and Rebecca, hid behind the shrubbery and played fife and drum as loud as they could. The Brits thought the militia was there and sailed away. The streets out by the lighthouse are named Abigail and Rebecca. Posted by: Bandersnatch at November 30, 2016 10:53 AM (mgbwf) 277

Read the article about how shocked the mother of the OSU jihadi is that her son is a jihadi.
First, the article says he was a naturalized citizen. The Columbus PD has said he is a legal permanent resident. Big difference and one that apparently the writer of the UK article doesn't understand. Second, I read about his AA degree from Columbus State. So I went to CSCC website to figure out how an "18" year old refugee from Pakistan, who arrived here two years ago could have a AA degree already. CSCC has an open admission policy. Meaning that you do not have to provide a high school transcript, ACT or SAT , etc. Just enroll and then take a placement test to see where you are in reading, writing , and arithmetic. So that answers that. I'm sure as a 'refugee" he qualified for full tuition. And tons of other help. And then once he got to OSU, he became one of 69,000 students and freaked that the scam wasn't going to continue. Regarding Elaine Chao. Elaine Chao was born in Taiwan after her parents, both highly educated in China, fled communist China. When she was 8, they moved to the USA where her father , who was a merchant marine, ended up founding a shipping company. She has lived in the USA for 51 years.(she's 63) She has a Bachelors degree in Economics from Mount Holyoke and an MBA from Harvard. Her accomplishments are too numerous to list here, I suggest for anyone who has interest in knowing her history more than making some juvenile Asian Concubine joke toward a woman with incredible business credentials, just look her name up on Wiki. She is a current member of the Board of the Heritage foundation, something she has been involved in for years. She's been married to McConnell for 23 years. It's where McConnell has gotten his wealth, as her family's shipping business is very successful. Her family is also has a very thorough understanding of China, it's government and business dealings and will be a huge help to Trump as he negotiates trade deals. But, please, more eating Asian jokes. They are really funny. sarc. Posted by: Jen at November 30, 2016 10:56 AM (Q3CCX) 284

One of the most famous and at one time the highest paid lighthouse keeper in America was a woman named Ida Lewis. She took over the job of lighthouse keeper on Lime Rock in Newport from her father after he died. She not only kept the light but she would hop in a rowboat and go out to save sailors during storms if their ships were in trouble. She is credited saving as many as 35 people over the years.
