Paul Krugman Got His Degree In Being Wrong All the Time

An angry, vain, petty little man who barks like a runt dog who wants attention.

Two weeks ago, the day after the election:

It really does now look like President Donald J. Trump, and markets are plunging. When might we expect them to recover?" Krugman said in his post. "If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never."

"We are very probably looking at a global recession, with no end in sight," he added. "I suppose we could get lucky somehow. But on economics, as on everything else, a terrible thing has just happened."

But Krugman's forecast that the markets would "never" recover took just nine hours to be proven totally wrong. Come Wednesday morning, the fever had almost entirely broken in the U.S. Instead of dropping by 10 percent or more, as some predicted, the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 all rose by more than a percent. Later in the day, the Dow briefly surged above its all-time closing high, before ending the day just a few points below it. The Dow finished the day up about 257 points overall.

And today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed the 19,000 level for the first time in history, though it's edged back a bit off that record high.

Who could ever see this going wrong?

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at November 22, 2016 01:56 PM (bheOt)

34 But on economics, as on everything else, a terrible thing has just happened.

The terrible thing happened 8 years ago and was being (very expensively) hidden. That is now coming due, as it always had to, at some point.

Trump is going to have to fight the worst economic and monetary conditions any President has ever seen, and it is not assured that this nation can weather it. But, the only way out is to grow out of it. There is no other solution even possible, and Trump is pretty much the only one who ran on the idea of unmitigated economic growth. Pretty much his entire focus, so far as I can see, is going to be on lifting government off of people's backs and necks and letting this economy start to grow, again. That is the only chance to get through this, and even then it's going to be dicey.

$20 trillion in debt plus a gargantuan Fed balance sheet of $5 trillion is not something that can be dealt with overnight. We are going to need to see upwards of 6% growth for an extended time - which we can do. It's yet to know if we will.

post. "If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer
is never."

And like all the far left talking heads on TV the dumb shit thinks the "markets" reflect the economy. They never have and they never will. And that has actually became worse in modern times and the "day traders".

So he was not just wrong on the markets, he is doubly wrong on economic matters. And this jerk-wad supposedly is an award wining "economist".

81 It's honestly hard to determine what will happen. The rate increase will happen and it's more a matter of how that will effect the market. It will most certainly hit real estate which has been printing some pretty good gains. Frankly I don't like some of the multiples on stocks because there simply isn't a lot of substance to justify many share prices. Bonds are also getting hit and that's been a bright spot during this period of cheap money and the fed buying up inventory.

That's not saying I agree with Krugman. He's a pompous ignorant ass and Democrat useful idiot who can't match his socks. But I don't think anyone knows where this market is going.

By the way. This comes from a guy who was betting heavily that Trump would win. Trust me, that felt like I was a guy with an STD at an orgy. But in the end I came out like Byron Long. So to speak.

I'd suggest the Trump team start publicizing real economic data, not the twisted and spun and massaged numbers we've been getting. Correct the numbers and straight up data for the last 4 or more years. Real unemployment, real growth/recession, real inflation etc. Get people ready.

The situation now is much worse.

I did find it interesting that the head of the Fed basically said, "Yep, we're waiting to raise interest rates until Trump actually takes office. Then all you people addicted to cheap debt are going to get your hangover."

Almost as if the institution had been politicized.

Of course, all of this was easily predictable. But I fault the Vichy GOP Congress, too, who never pushed the Fed head in Congress about how it was going to be so easy to unwind its balance sheet and revert back to normality.

It was eminently clear years ago that the US was totally off-the-rails on fiscal and monetary policy. To have the lowest interest rates in recorded history (and even pushing negative, which is beyond the threshold of insane) and have housing prices only treading water is as clear a sign as one can get that 'something is very, very, very wrong and the coming pain will be unbearable'. But ... on we went ... because Barky ahd magic skin and the Vichy GOP turds were either collaborating with him or too scared to even try to stop him as he did irreparable damage to the nation and to our society.

Posted by: Nevergiveup

The ship lost propulsion in its port shaft during the transit and the crew saw water intrusion in two of the four bearings that connect to Zumwalt’s port and starboard Advanced Induction Motors (AIMs) to the drive shafts, a defense official told USNI News on Tuesday. The AIMs are the massive electrical motors that are driven by the ship’s gas turbines and in turn electrically power the ship’s systems and drive the shafts.

Both of the shafts locked during the passage and the transit had to be completed with tugs. The ship made minor contact with lock walls in the canal resulting in minor cosmetic damage. Following the transit, the Navy determined the ship couldn’t continue to its new homeport at Naval Station San Diego without additional repairs.

137 I yield to no man in assessing Paul Krugman a d*ckhead, but we really should not be getting too excited about using the markets as a metric of the economic health of the country. The Fed has destroyed market price discovery for going on thirty years now with two very nasty bubble bursts resulting. We are somewhere near the end of the road leading to the third nasty financial crash--and this time there will be nobody to bail out the central bankers. Krugman may well end up longing again for the alien beings to show up: this time with spaceship money--since the helicopter money has failed.

Let's all enjoy Krugman sprouting yet another a**hole for himself without accepting market performance as either a positive or negative reflection on governance. The only thing the markets have reflected since Greenspan is a complete corruption of economic reality.

One of the Stated Key Rationales for the DDG-1000 class was to have a return of naval gunfire support along and beyond hostile shorelines.

Hence the Zumwalts. (Which are "destroyers" the size of WWII pocket battleships, costing as much money as a Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier.) The DDG-1000s were somehow supposed to get close in to shore without being destroyed, and then use their ultra super duper new gun armament to lob accurate smart projectiles well inland.

It has turned out that the shells for the guns are costing over eight hundred thousand dollars each. A visibly embarrassed Big Navy establishment has had to cancel the procurement.

177 Chicago to Remain Sanctuary City (fake news)

Calling illegal alien criminal gangs "a time-honored part of our city's culture," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that "we will remain a sanctuary city regardless of whatever opposition a President Trump might express to our policy."

For his part, President-Elect Trump has pledged to deport or incarcerate the estimated two million illegal aliens in the country who have criminal records. Given that Chicago suffers from dozens of gang-related shootings every month it would seem that removing criminal aliens from the mix might lessen the carnage.

Emanuel was having none of this, though, calling the apparent salutary objective of deporting the worst of the worst "a camouflage for the real aim of deporting prospective Democrat voters. I think that most Latinos are willing to accept a few casualties as a reasonable price to pay for the gains that can be attained from being granted an electoral franchise."

Someone once characterized poker as a game in which the players each act on their perception of reality, with the winner being the one whose perception comes closest to the truth.

This is one of the problems with leftists; their perception of reality is so warped that they can convince themselves of anything, because most of the time they're not even within hailing distance of reality.

Quite.

Several of the _Ohio_ class SSBNs have had their Trident strategic nuclear ballistic missiles removed, and been converted to SSGN, with tactical conventional cruise missiles.

A *whole lot* of cruise missiles, because those things are much smaller than a Trident D5.

It is a rare example of sensible procurement policy.

Only one problem. Clowngress and the five-sided loony bin on the Potomac have, between them, managed to create a situation where there aren't adequate numbers of cruise missiles available any longer.

So maybe those converted _Ohios_ can go stick up a periscope threateningly. Don't mess with us!

242 "Y'know if the navy wanted a boat that could do shore bombardment on a
bigly scale they could always pull some of the Iowa class BBs out of
retirement."

The high-tech Zumwalt guns would purportedly shoot 58 miles. However, modernized projectiles out of the Iowa class 16-inch guns would go over 100 miles. With modifications to the Iowas' handling and loading systems, 250 miles.

The real problem with the Iowas is propulsion. The modern Navy is all gas turbines and nuclear reactors. There's no one left who can run an antique engine room reliant on high pressure steam.

(Nor should anyone want to. Horrifying things happen when live steam busts loose. I'd rather be at close quarters with a nice safe well behaved nuke reactor.)

In my dream, Trump announces that all of the profits from his business empire will be deposited immediately into a trust that will fund three things:

1. The A-10, in perpetuity;

2. College scholarships for needy kids that depends only on test scores and need, not on race or any other criteria; and,

3. The Southern border fence.

Then he renames the Department of Defense to The Department of War, closes down the Federal Department of Education, and gives the head of the INS job to Joe Arapaio.

There is no reason the newly elected Republican president, along with the Republican House and Senate, can't make dramatic changes in the first hundred days.

I'd recommend a purge of the federal bureaucracy, starting with the top management of the VA and the IRS. Those 'middle managers' who gave themselves bonuses by falsifying records and allowing sick veterans to die by neglect? Not just fire but arrest them. Those IRS department heads who targeted conservative groups? Not just fire but arrest them.

Put the fear of God into those weasellyscumbags. Let them know they are no longer safe. Then we'll see real results.

389 Bluebell and LizLem,

The Williamsburg novels follow a Virginia family from pre-Revolutionary War on. At some point they develop an English branch, so the story continues through WWI and WWII. The author is Elswyth Thane, married to William Beebe, so sometimes listed as Elswyth Beebe. Begins with DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT. I think very well researched but don't hit you over the head with it.

As I said to Bluebell, I came upon them when I was a kid in MT, and they formed my idea of what the world should be. But since it was fiction, it never occurred to me that William and Mary was real! Imagine spending all your daydreams in a place like Williamsburg and then discovering it actually existed.

Ummm, no. Alt Right was a term adopted by actual freaking Neo Nazis several years ago in an attempt to rebrand themselves. There is and has been for several years an actual white supremacist movement that adopted for itself the term Alt Right. It's not a new term and it's not a new movement and the actual Alt Right is to be condemned.

It is just as wrong to pretend that there are not those who call themselves the Alt Right who are actual Neo Nazis as it is to pretend that anyone to the right of Che is a part of the Alt Right and are Neo Nazis.

I comprehend why people don't trust the NYT on this, because the NYT is not to be trusted, but stop pretending that Richard Spencer a. doesn't exist and b. isn't a vile piece of work.

A good prof I had in college explained the difference pretty well: Extroverts (and he put himself in that category) get energized by being around others. Introverts find being around others exhausting after a while. Which is not to say the extroverts are incapable of enjoying time alone or that introverts are incapable of being sociable. It's just not the habitat they thrive in.

And then Hannity co-opted the term for his radical alt-left term for progressive leftists. I don't associate it with neo nazis except as a sad fringe that might claim the term, but no longer own it.

They actually do still own it. Richard Spencer invented it and wears it proudly. The left, as they always do, tried to associate anyone who overlapped with their views in any way, like being for Trump or even against Hillary, and tried to bundle everyone into one large basket of alt-right deplorables.

Some, like Milo, wore the label as a joke because obviously a gay man of Jewish heritage who only dates black guys is not alt-right, but that never stops the left from shouting nonsense. They called Trump an anti-semite despite the fact that his daughter, son-in-law and his grandchildren are Jewish.

Facts don't matter to the left, just character assassination.

.I don't have my Jane's Star Fleet guide handy, but I seem to recall that you could not "beam out" any part of a star ship that was not pre staged like the transporter room stands. That's why they always went to the transporter room to beam out anywhere.

You could always beam things into a ship like a bomb but there were supposedly shields or filters to prevent that. But they pretty much broke every rule they ever made in star Trek so there is that.

Like the episode where Sulu and some crew members were stranded on a freezing planet and the transporter was broken so they couldn't get beamed up. I never could understand why they didn't just fly a shuttle craft down to pick them up.

That Kahless is a clone of the ancient Kahless, and he was installed as (ceremonial) emperor in an episode TNG. There's some line about how long it's been since the Klingons had an emperor, I'm pretty sure it's before TOS.

But yeah, Star Trek 6 introduces the Klingon Chancellor and stuff; TNG may have made some statements before 6 was released too. Early TNG is kinda fun in parts because they didn't always know what could get contradicted by the movies.

"I mean, okay, yes, they must've, but a lot of Trek was made up as they went along. "

I read in the WSJ that a lot of Trek inventions came from the fact that they were working on a shoestring budget. The transporter room was created because it was cheaper and quicker than having a shuttle. They must have created the shuttlecraft to meet the needs of a particular plotline.

That's why there was a transporter to begin with.

Yeah, but they weren't mentioned, but would've come in handy early on, if they had stuff planned out.

Re: TOS Klingons vs. TNG Klingons-- That was a hilarious bit with Worf, but then Enterprise-- which I actually like a lot-- decided that it needed explaining. Star Trek is at its worst (usually) when it has to explain itself. Or when it takes itself too seriously.

601 I'm over with Star Trek but I did have a book on the history of it.

The show was produced by Desilu, Lucille Ball and Ricky's company. Lucy never really understood what the show was about. She heard the term Star Trek one time and thought it was a show about some actors.

606 "Alt right" is the new "hate speech."
It starts out meaningless.
Then rather than get into a debate about semantics, most find it easier simply to say "I'm not..."
Then the term itself acquires the meaning of Unacceptable Third Rail Opinion That Thou Must Never Touch --and we lose more freedom of speech and thought in the process.

614 The problem with the later Star Trek shows is that they took themselves entirely too seriously. Maybe it depends on how it originated and where it is most commonly used. I do think terms can be so tainted they just need to be dropped. This seems like one of them, particularly since it IS so new, and most associations I've seen are negative.

630 The facts in evidence about Trump's campaign should dispel any notion that he's associated with Nazis or White Supremacists.
His son-in law is an Orthodox Jew. So his daughter Ivanka, who converted.
Trump actively sought the black vote
He gave a shout out at the RNC to LBGTetc, and thousands of Evangelicals cheered; Later at a rally, he hoisted a rainbow flag.
Not only do these few examples illustrate that Trump or his advisors are not Neo-Nazis. They also disprove any notion that REAL Neo Nazis would want to be associated wit Trump's movement.

It's smoke and mirrors from the MSM to confuse the LIVs and try to deligitamize Trump's presidency.
