Can America Survive the Mass Panic of the Adult Babies?

I wrote the first draft of this post in a series of Tweets. Someone had asked me about what the hell was going on; this is my answer.

This is what set me off:

This is mass hysteria.

In sociology and psychology, mass hysteria (also known as collective hysteria, group hysteria, or collective obsessional behavior) is a phenomenon that transmits collective allusions of threats, whether real or imaginary, through a population in society as a result of rumors and fear (memory acknowledgment).

In medicine, the term is used to describe the spontaneous manifestation (production in chemicals in the body) of the same or similar hysterical physical symptoms by more than one person.

People teach each other how to behave. These people spend all day in bubbles spraying each other with panic pheremones like they're in some kind of Amygdala-Milking Bukakke of Terror.

Or they tweet out unhinged emotional Vaudeville that sparks the release of fear and panic chemicals in readers.

Speaking of a buzzword that is very au courrant with the left at the moment -- the "normalization" of some attitudes -- this sort of performative neurotic hysteria used to be frowned upon, so its infectious capacity and destructive reach was limited.

But now of course hysterical overemoting has been valorized into how one shows one feels and one really cares deeply and ergo is virtuous.

Whipping oneself into an embarrassing emotional lather is now considered righteous instead of ridiculous.

I really prefer people who follow the old-timey White Racist Social rule of keeping one's shit together and taking an I-don't-give-a-f*** attitude.

They're so much less work. Life is stressful enough without a bunch of neurotics adding to that stress with weird outbursts.

The Haidt/Lukianov thesis that current social norms teach people that it's affirmatively good to be hysterical about everything is 100% true.

It's necessary reading for anyone who wants to understand this Age of Daily Rages -- and very helpful for just surviving it.

Lukianov had been helped by congitive behavioral therapy -- a therapy in which people who are actually -- get this -- triggered by something are taught to not be triggered by it.

Say it's a fear of heights. Or of bridges. Or social discomfort. These things do in fact trigger a cascade of bad, anxious, panicky chemicals through the brain in some people.

Cognitive behavioral therapy tries to teach people to short-circuit/disrupt/desensitize that triggering circumstance until it no longer triggers them (or at least triggers them less) and thus they keep the cascade of bad brain chemicals from gushing too much.

Lukianov's amazing insight was that just as cognitive behavioral techniques could be used to desensitize someone to an emotional trigger, so could an evil form of the techniques be used to hypersenisitize someone to an emotional trigger.

What you're seeing on college campuses, on social media, and in society generally is the triumph of these evil forms of malevolent cognitive behavioral conditioning to encourage people not to keep their wits about them and stand strong in the face of adversity, but to collapse into a twitchy puddle of panic and mental disarray if they so much as see a word they don't like.

And thus colleges which once produced some of the boys who stormed Normandy are now producing Adult Babies who need Play-Doh recovery rooms if they hear that American Sniper is being screened at the rec center.

The old ethic--taught to boys and girls alike--to dust oneself off, get up, and walk it off has been replaced by Cry About Every Silly Thing because it makes you a better, more "engaged" person.

We were once a more bottled-up, grin-and-bear-it society -- perhaps too much so, but that's a tangential argument -- and we had to encourage people to let their feelings out, because they were adverse to doing so.

Sometimes we'd have to counsel someone to allow themselves to feel pain: "Even the strong must cry sometimes."

Yeah, dudes, but not every five minutes and not over every little silly stubbed toe.

Hysteria can be transmitted like a disease. That's how one person's hysteria becomes a mass or collective hysteria -- they transmit the fear, the delusion, the panic, the paranoia to those around them, who then act as Lunacy Vectors to infect even more people.

Just as a neurotic mom will often infect her child with neurosis, so too does the hysteria-breeding Petrie dish of social media infect users.

We're animals. We pick up on the jitters and freaky pheremones of our fellow animals. In this way one's emotional state is communicated virally to someone else.

One courageous guy in a unit can put steel into the rest of the unit; one coward can infect the rest with cowardice.

I've seen this myself in real life. When I was young, some friends and I were in a dark and lonely place. But it wasn't actually scary -- maybe it just had the potential to be scary.

All of a sudden one of this little pack of human animals pricks up his ears and starts running, full speed, bolting like a deer that heard a gunshot.

But there was no gunshot.

Guess what the rest of us did? We started running too.

We didn't even know why. We didn't ask why. Not at the moment. We just ran.

One deer started running, and the rest of the deer involuntarily picked up on that fight or flight response.

What spooked him? We asked later. He didn't know. He'd heard something, but he couldn't really explain quite what it was. Who knows -- an echo of a footfall that became in his mind the racing steps of a mob of thugs.

So we just all ran for no reason. No danger around us-- and only one of us had even felt the frisson of danger. But the rest of us then got that danger-vibe into us very quickly and took off after him.

Addiction recovery plans usually involve cutting off contact from those who are still using. People socialize habits into each other.

Having one's entire Twitter Timeline shrieking like lunatics will go a ways towards sparking lunacy in oneself. Having one's entire FaceBook Wall screaming hysterically at you may lead to that awful feeling of growing hysteria inside your chest.

Emotions are vital and important, but they are not let's-put-on-a-show theater for your friends and fake Twitter friends.

The theatrical should be confined to the theater, the operatic to the opera, and the lunatic to a real #SafeSpace in a softly padded room in an asylum.

It may have once been the case that too many people were unhealthily bottled up emotionally.

Sometimes that happens today -- a vet too depressed to admit his pain should be encouraged to open up emotionally.

But most of us aren't that way anymore. Most of us are now quite too far in the opposite direction.

An adult baby should not be encouraged in his performative, look-at-me-and-feel-my-pain-in-your-own-bones hysterics.

An adult baby needs to be told "Toughen up, buttercup."

I still really don't see how America can possibly survive a generation of hysterical imbeciles and trying-to-be-"hip" old people aping the panics of the juvenile.

Society needs a little little more of Kipling's "If"...

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you...

...and society needs a whole lot less of this Emotional Theater:

This is why I'm so ban-happy, by the way. Constant shit-stirring, unpleasantness, and negativity will breed more shit-stirring, unpleasantness, and negativity. I know full well that angry, unpleasant, and negative people can easily make other people feel angry, unpleasant, and negative.

I don't want that here, and I sure the hell don't want it normalized in the "Just the way everyone's supposed to behave."

As I said at the top: We socialize into each other what collectively become the accepted standards of group behavior.

And it's about time we started banning the hysterical and hostile from our social media streams as well. Or at least try to de-normalize their abnormal psychology by telling them to hump a load and carry it without bawling and wailing about it in front of the other men.

58 Lefties elevate Victims.

Most of their BS is claiming victimhood, and jockeying to be the biggest victim.

Then, when crowned the Biggest Victim, they get to start issuing the orders: "Shut Up", "Do What I Say," "You Can't X, Y, Or Z," "Kneel Before Me," "Atone."

And they've trained their behavior to make them petulant, weak, ineffective, mewling babies. Not in truth, of course, but in their public performance-- to demonstrate their victimhood for the mob.

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at November 16, 2016 05:32 PM (+wjl1)

59 The question, for me, is how much of this is a genuine emotional meltdown, and how much of it is an attempt to control the rest of us? Not just the riots and the shrieking about voting for Trump being a hate crime, or Slate mewling that there's no such thing as a good Trump voter, but the mental breakdowns we're witnessing? How much of it is calculated -- consciously or not -- to shame those of us who voted R this year to second guess ourselves, or to maintain the ironclad belief that anyone not on the left side of the aisle is a moral monster?

I have a very good friend, a guy I've known for 30 years, someone I've been able to depend on through thick and thin, who confided in me he felt as afraid after Trump won as he did after 9/11. It took me a while to process it -- this isn't a stupid guy, or even an especially doctrinaire lefty. In fact he considers himself a centrist, but as I told him, a NYC centrist is a lefty in most of the rest of the country. But the more I thought about it the angrier it made me: someone who had an emotional response to the election similar to what he felt after 9/11 has lost all perspective. So did my buddy reach this level through his own considered views of the issues, or because of the insane leftist stew he must simmer in every day?

I don't have an answer.

a bit of both. Babies cry to get attention, but they are actually in want or need or distress.

Of course, most of us learn to stop crying like a baby once we're no longer babies, and then we learn to cry in fewer and fewer situations.

Again, these Adult Babies are teaching each other the norm that not only is it okay to cry over everything, but socially favored to do so.

Now we have Trump, and the whole time the masses have been hearing the key phrases ... white supremacist, religious test, deplorable bigot, rural "lowly educated".

Listening to PBS from election night, they'd have us believe Trump just spoke terrible hate phrases that need to be rooted out of the racist goat flucking hillbillies. Spin control ... but don't worry, the superior PBS listeners are above it all, just like Obama was always looking down on the whole nation, picking out which lowly humans to blame for failing to heed his Highest Calling.

The problem is, people are naturally wired to sometimes want to "go with the flow" with the least path of resistance.

So when the media makes it look like EVERYONE is flying into a hysterical rage over Trump, but everything is happy go lucky when say Obama or "insert Democrat here" wins.

People will then want the option that doesn't create all the chaos , panic and rage. Unfortunately the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I have a similar sad situation going on in my life right now. A friend from church, who is Black, is very upset about Trump's election and feels that she can't come to church because she knows many of the congregation backed Trump. (And many did not.) I want to tell her that she's over-reacting, that what she's been told about Trump is not true, that even if Trump himself is racist (taking that for argument's sake) the people who voted for him aren't, but I know telling her all that isn't going to help. 161 As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return! -RK

173 A) Trump will still be the President for the next 4 years.
B) Hillary will NEVER be President.

Suck it, lefties.

BTW: I think the postulated notion that the biggest driver of this is the realization that they are not the cool kids anymore is spot-on.

I mean, they--these people who are crying--are not winners at anything else in their lives. They are not the class president, not the captain of any sports team, they're not the head cheerleader. They own nothing of value, they produce nothing of value and their only real skill is scoring moderately decent grades on standardized tests sufficient to fall for the scam of college.

But: What "wins" do they have to point to in their lives? Something that made them "better" than all the people out there actually winning? Nothing.

Like the worst bandwagon fans, they hitched on to BHO--and he won--so, by association, they are "winners" too.

And that mean bastard Trump--and all his stupid, evil supporters--took that away from them.

Like that video with the SJWs freaking out crying, etc. First I laughed, then about halfway through, it occurred to me that our enemies overseas are watching it as well. And could we blame them if they smiled at what a ridiculous display it is?
On September 11th, I had just started my second year of college. Were there tears in the days afterward? Of course. Was there fear? Absolutely. I know a lot of people (including myself) were likely in shock, but I don't remember any of the hysteria like what we've seen over the last seven days. And we sure as shit didn't have "safe spaces" to go to on campus - other than the chapel.

250 Facebook solves a problem for me and is a net positive. I control it to my desire. I have way too many friends and relatives to keep up with by calling or emailing. But I see what they are up to and hear how they are doing on facebook.

When needed, I message them easier and hear back faster than by using email.

I also promote my music gigs there, and the Merewife's photography gets some business from there.

I unfollow the idjits. They can't tell.

It all works out to my advantage. I don't twitter though and have no plan to do so.

291 My husband's niece has managed to alienate her entire family with her Facebook drama posts about how she feels sorry for blacks and muslims (BTW, WTF is all this about blacks? I can't recall Trump saying a single thing that could be twisted about blacks).

Her brother tried to say not everybody who voted for Trump is a bad person, then her possibly ex-husband (I hate him so much I haven't bothered to find out his official status) jumped in and called the brother a racist, at which point husband's niece tried to defend her brother, sort of, and now nobody will talk to her.

Reap the whirlwind, you idiot.

And this was a person I thought I was getting through too, about entitlement reform (she was working 3 lousy service jobs) and how illegal workers were pushing down her wages. Guess not.

Soooooo glad hubby and I have never joined FB.

297 applause. Well said Ace. I think you or a co-blogger linked an article around summer 2015 where a sociologist wrote a paper about we used to have an honor society, even to the point of duels. Then we had what they called a dignity society where everyone has dignity and lately we have become a victim society. This current mass hysteria is the outcome but society has been going down this trend of celebrating victimhood for over a decade.

Being a victim of terrorism, or crime or a natural disaster does not make one a hero. Brave actions in the face of those things does. And now either in a deliberate effort to weaken us to allow Islam to take over or in an endpoint spiral of stupidity society is celebrating victimhood to the point where melting down because the co-op didn't have organic papaya is celebrated rather than discouraged.

It was bad enough when encouraging helplessness and hysteria was limited to only wealthy upper class Victorian women; it can only end badly when a full nation is encouraged to act like this.

I got fairly used to killing them in Indonesia, barefoot.

All one has to do is give them a good shove sideways. They invariably die when they slide across the floor and hit the wall. Huge bugs but really wimpy.

Also learned that if I got lazy and didn't clean them up right away, the ants would find them and do the job for me overnight.

360 I don't find the mass hysteria by the Left at all funny, or harmless. It's an ominous sign of things to come, if there isn't a real change in this country. Forget about having the presidency and both houses, or cleaning out the DOJ. None of that counts in the long run because in 4-8 years the other side gets back in. In the meantime, they own Hollywood, the media, popular culture, and the education system from pre-k through the university level. Not to mention infesting many businesses with the cultural rot, up to and including the CEOs. Having Republicans running the govt. only delays the inevitable. We need to win the culture wars or this country's finished.

384 Like it or not, people act on belief. If one side believes the other side is evil then there is not much any of us can do to stop the consequences that are bound to follow.

The freak out we are seeing is much more dangerous than adults acting like babies. This is not me being negative or over reacting myself, but is based on historical reality.

Hopefully they will come out of cult they have created for themselves, but for our own safety (and sanity) we must not give in anymore to the cult. Giving in only reinforces their belief that they are right and we are wrong.

Hence why I hope follow's through in confronting them over something like sanctuary cities. It is better we find out now how far they are willing to for their beliefs.

Just look at Silverman's tweet again:

"For a lot of people, this is the Great Depression, but this time it's emotional & physical. Our bodies r breaking down w fear & rage..."

If we felt this was about to happen to us how far would we go to fix that? We have to take them at their word that they are insane as they say they are. Anything less would be dangerous wishful folly.

436 >> When the skilled (blue collar) come back on line

We are unlikely ever to have the scale of blue-collar manufacturing we had before, because automation.

But...automation hits China and Vietnam almost as hard as it hits us, and if you've got stable laws, sane regulation, cheap energy, and good infrastructure you're going to be a competitive place to put those automated manufacturing plants.

So if you can get your energy costs to 1/3 of Germany (which is entirely practical) and entice the high-tier suppliers in, then you've got...well, what BMW did in South Carolina.

These people are scum, as bad as Hillary calling tens of millions deplorable racists. 515 Ace, I take exception to your thesis, as expressed here:

This is mass hysteria.

"In sociology and psychology, mass hysteria (also known as collective hysteria, group hysteria, or collective obsessional behavior) is a phenomenon that transmits collective allusions of threats, whether real or imaginary, through a population in society as a result of rumors and fear (memory acknowledgment)."

I posit that this is an even rarer phenomenon:

Faux Mass Hysteria, or "Mass Hysteria Malingering" if you prefer.

I live in an extreme liberal area, as I think you do. While may be seeing this mass hysteria expressed on the Internet and by the 1% of the population who are professional protesters and whiners, in reality, on the day-to-day streets out there in liberal-land -- everything looks exactly the same. People are NOT crying and freaking out. There simply have fewer smirks, or maybe different kind of smirks, while driving their Volvos and shopping for shade-grown coffee.

In other words: For most people, the mass "meltdown" of the left as a group behavior is in fact all a big act.

Yes, some small percentage of unhinged and particularly stupid people don't understand that it's a clas-wide deceptive act and instead really DO freak out -- but they are in the extreme minority.

Trump won, but the nation did not change. Everything for the moment is still the same. So the lefties aren't yet feeling any actual real-world effects of his victory.

Yet.

563 Short answer, no.

We can't survive this. The screaming and crying will increase in volume and intensity and will never let up until somehow, somehow, they get what they want, which I guess is a coup.

Impeachment won't work for them because that yields a true conservative as president.

So we'll get a coup, a revolution, or a civil war.

FMA could definitely work as a Hollywood production - the setting is Western, it's got lots of room for CGI goodness but hides a surprisingly deep and fulfilling story. I have a feeling GITS is going to determine whether a lot of other anime adaptations get greenlit, though there are others in the pipeline - Tiger and Bunny is getting made last I checked, and there are the other 3 or 4 in perpetual dev hell (Battle Angel Alita, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, and Evangelion IIRC).

But every time someone tries to sell me on Windows 10, they say "well if you do this, then it'll be just like 7." And I always think "Then why don't I just keep 7?"

683 Haven't read anything by Silverman's stupid tweet. That self absorbed nitwit would not know anything of the Great Depression, and she cheapens the lives of those who suffered through it.

Glad she's on the other side--idiot.

684 Dammit Ace. Every time I think you've outdone yourself, you go and outdo yourself.. again.

Kudos and I owe you a beer (or spinach juice if you are still doing the diet thing) or 30.

Oh, and a genuine heartfelt thanks for being the Lord Deplorable Moron you are.

685 Just think how much this bitch would be screeching if we were anything like how the right is portrayed in her diseased fantasy.

686 NORMALIZED
In the physical sciences, a NORMAL force is one that is at right angles to the plane upon which it is acting. It is not in alignment with the plane; it is at right angles to it.

691 I'll tell you how we survive it. It's because at some point people have to leave college and work in an environment where hysteria is not marketable. If your college and your home life let you down you have to learn the hard way, in a world that doesn't give a rip about your feelings.

Mcdonald's may be better socialization than college ever was.

I believe it's a phenomenon called "growing up". And it's disappointing that modern parenting has deferred that phase of human life to the late twenties or thirties.

692 The wife and her two sisters were over, suddenly a shriek rang out then two or three more and a desperate dash for the front door came about.
I said Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
I asked from inside the house what happened, the wife said "THERE IS A BIRD IN THE HOUSE!" It flew in the open window where I feed them at a hanging feeder it makes me feel close to the little critters to watch them eat and sing.
I went and grabbed a light shirt and proceeded to attempt to herd or capture the bird and thankfully he flew back out the window.
Now I don't know about you but I've personally never been afraid of a Brown Headed Nuthatch all three or four ounces of him.
But one woman screams and runs and they all scream and run, mass hysteria over a very small seed eating bird that usually comes in the window and sits on my PC monitor.
This is what is happening to liberals on twitter.
They are en mass afraid of basically just another old man who scares them.

693 Shouldn't the Wikipedia page's "allusions" be "delusions" or "illusions"? I'm alluding to the writer's ignorance here.
