CBS Opinion Writer Will Rahn: Gee, The Press Sure Is Unbearably Smug, Isn't It?

Agree to agree.

The mood in the Washington press corps is bleak, and deservedly so.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that, with a few exceptions, we were all tacitly or explicitly #WithHer, which has led to a certain anguish in the face of Donald Trump’s victory. More than that and more importantly, we also missed the story, after having spent months mocking the people who had a better sense of what was going on.

This is all symptomatic of modern journalism's great moral and intellectual failing: its unbearable smugness. Had Hillary Clinton won, there’s be a winking "we did it" feeling in the press, a sense that we were brave and called Trump a liar and saved the republic.

So much for that. The audience for our glib analysis and contempt for much of the electorate, it turned out, was rather limited. This was particularly true when it came to voters, the ones who turned out by the millions to deliver not only a rebuke to the political system but also the people who cover it. Trump knew what he was doing when he invited his crowds to jeer and hiss the reporters covering him. They hate us, and have for some time.

And can you blame them? Journalists love mocking Trump supporters. We insult their appearances. We dismiss them as racists and sexists. We emote on Twitter about how this or that comment or policy makes us feel one way or the other, and yet we reject their feelings as invalid.

It’s a profound failure of empathy in the service of endless posturing. There's been some sympathy from the press, sure: the dispatches from "heroin country" that read like reports from colonial administrators checking in on the natives. But much of that starts from the assumption that Trump voters are backward, and that it's our duty to catalogue and ultimately reverse that backwardness. What can we do to get these people to stop worshiping their false god and accept our gospel?

We diagnose them as racists in the way Dark Age clerics confused medical problems with demonic possession. Journalists, at our worst, see ourselves as a priestly caste. We believe we not only have access to the indisputable facts, but also a greater truth, a system of beliefs divined from an advanced understanding of justice.

Sounds like stuff I've written a dozen times. Glad they're finally getting it.

One thing I can say proudly for the conservative media: At least none of us winked and postured as we sneered at "Trumpkins," nor not-so-secretly supported Hillary while carrying on like a Priestly Caste determined to root out all sin from the backwards natives.

Not a single one of us. Not a one.

They ran Victor David Hanson's plea to vote for Trump.

They did not actually endorse anyone in the general, but that includes Evan McMullin and Gary Johnson (or Hillary Clinton for that matter).

Some will say damning with faint praise, but they're not a party organ. They are a magazine designed around principles, and their principles told them to savage Hillary and, once he won the nomination, turn a little hands off of Trump.

Very sharp, smart guy (has one eye and looks like a pirate).

We just got sick of it, and backed someone who said what we all saw, the media is not comprised of journalists, but Democrats with bylines.

When people like Rahn can admit they did their level best to create this problem, and that it preceded Trump, then they might be on that first step of the journey to admitting they are part and parcel of the problem.

79 All Lefties are smug. Have you ever noticed that? If you meet a humble lefty, you've just met a confused conservative.

It's a bad sign if you go into every human interaction thinking you're better than everyone else. As it's base, it's all narcissism, probably born of the "everyone gets a trophy" shit. Not the one of them has accepted that they might be wrong. Even stunningly so, in most cases. Hence the inability to deal with a resounding repudiation of everything they thought this country should be.

80 I take heart, not in this supposed soul-searching essay by a still unrepentant Democrat journolist, but in the knowledge that the actual influence wielded by the leftist media and the #NeverTrumpers like National Review is absolutely zero. Their ability to influence an election has been completely eroded.

And I like National Review. But this election cycle has shown me that they are a bunch of hobbyist idealogues with no expectations for any kind of real-world results, whether they be economic or otherwise. They're allowed to exist in a fantasy world by some benevolent benefactors that underwrite their otherwise financially-failing business.

That's their fault, but they put their name on the line for an idea and they kept to it. If you want people on your side who won't bend, then National Review is probably a magazine that fits that profile.

That's fair. However, the comparison between Rubio and Obama's appeal is valid. Rubio had the ability to appeal to people's emotions in a positive way. 137 I like how the people who supported the crooked grifter from Arkansas believe they're so vastly superior to the rest of us.

Trump is the liar -- not the woman who fired the White House travel office staff when she was First Lady so she could replace them with her own cronies, and then repeatedly lied about it to the public, the media, and everybody else in sight. Not the woman who sneaked into the Rose Law Firm in the dead of night to steal her own billing records so that the public would not know how much time she had spent counseling her S&L clients how to evade federal banking laws, and then hid those records in the White House, and pretended they did not exist when they were subpoenaed. Not the woman who publicly smeared as "bimbos" and "tramps" the victims of her husband's sexual assaults. Not the woman who stood over the coffins of four dead Americans and looked into their family members eyes and lied about a videotape. Not the woman who set up a private and insecure email server while Secretary of State, so that she could hide the evidence of the fact that she was selling her influence in exchange for "donations" to her family's phony "charity" -- a "charity" that her own aides have admitted in their emails was being used to fund non-charitable things such as Chelsea Clinton's luxurious lifestyle and lavish wedding.

But yeah, Trump is the liar. And we're the dumb rubes for backing him instead of that paragon of virtue Hillary Clinton whom all the smarter, "better" people support.

Well guess what, you smug leftist d-bags? We Trump voters know what Trump is, just like we know what Hillary is. And between the two of them, Trump was clearly the better choice. It's the sticking to it part that always seems to be the difficult part. Would Rubio or Jeb have been as passionate at calling out Hillary's antics as SoS? If they were, they probably could have won as well, but if not I don't think they would have. 164 From February. I still have the same fantasy:

I have a fantasy that after the extent of Hillary's crimes has been revealed, Trump goes on ABC's Sunday morning program and about five minutes into his interview with Stephanopoulos Trump drops the bomb:

You know George, Hillary should be in jail and you should be fired. You're a political hack and always have been. You've had Hillary on this show several times and never asked her the obvious questions, like "So you're saying that you were Secretary of State for four years and never got a single top secret classified e-mail." So George you've been a co-conspirator in this. And we know why. Doing the Clinton's dirty work made your career. Without them you'd be nothing. Nothing! So you've done the country an incredible disservice. And I promise you this, I will never come on this show again so long as you're involved with it. And if elected, I promise you that no one in my administration will either.

199 There's also this WaPo article: http://wapo.st/2fGf5TI

If you do not know that there are a range of philosophical and theological bases for differing first principles, you are not an educated human being. Oh, you may have degrees, maybe even many of them from Shiny Shiny Places, but you are not educated in any meaning of the term.

Not only that, but those who have completely and utterly failed in their obligation to educate you are not worthy of the term educators.

This is not a rhetorical question. Do people not read actual books any longer? I'm serious about that.

It used to go without saying that you read the foundational works for those whose views oppose yours so that you understand the bases for their views. After all, shock of shocks, mayhap that side has good points as well.

Now absolute ignorance of the other side's positions is held up as some kind of moral good.

The hell is *wrong* with people? I cannot comprehend being so intellectually incurious as to not want to know why other people believe what they do.

Then again, I'm not so insecure that I'm terrified that eeek new information may require I reevaluate my views.

But Trump won because he was able to connect with the "Reagan Democrats". Bush 43 kind of did....and no other Republican had since 88....

A point I made on election night - the Rs tried to win the rust belt, repeatedly, by offering them *nothing*.

They wanted immigration laws enforced if not strengthened and trade deals reviewed closely. Romney and McCain offered them more immigration and more "free" trade deals.

Trump actually offered them what they wanted...and won their votes. This shouldn't be a shock.

My starting point from way back in 2009 was the GOP will win over Hillary no matter who we nominated. I later amended that to say including Trump, but excluding Jeb. At somepoint, I realized, even Jeb could probably beat her. And while I still believe that Rubio, Cruz, and others could have / would have beat her, all of that is an uncertainty. As you say, what is certain is that Trump did beat her. There is simply no way to deny that. And he did win states that the GOP have not won in a while - again, no way to deny that.

I wish him well, and I hope he is what many think he can be.

Have the Trump organization take the time to seek out those that worked for the movement, contributed, wrote passionately about and kept the faith when everyone around them was mocking and deriding them.

These are the people who will put their hearts and souls into making the government what it should be.

If Trump reaches out and gives even one high profile job to someone who was clearly on the other side in the name of "getting along" and "bringing everyone together", he will demoralize the entire movement.

241 I still say the Dems are being pretty stupid in trying to gin up riots to protest against a Trump win. Violence against a populace only works when that populace does not feel they have any power.

America has the most armed populace in the world. Plus, this is not going to encourage people to cower in their homes, defenseless, it is going to encourage them to go out and buy MORE guns.

Wait a second. Are all the democrats heavily invested in gun companies? After Trumps win did they see their business scaling back a little and are now trying to reignite the market?

Education secretary

Trump has made clear the Education Department would play a reduced role in his administration -- if it exists at all. He has suggested he may try to do away with it altogether.

The GOP nominee has also offered a few hints about who he would pick to lead the department while it's still around. Among those who may be on the shortlist is Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who ran against Trump in the primary but later endorsed the Republican presidential candidate. Education Insider, a monthly survey of congressional staff, federal officials and other "insiders," said in May that Carson was Trump's most likely pick.

Another possible education secretary under Trump is William Evers, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution who has worked on education matters for the Trump transition team. Evers worked at the Education Department during the Bush administration and served as a senior adviser to then-Education Secretary Margaret Spellings.

291 On the "conservative" side, I believe that the candidacy of Evan "the Human Q-tip" McMullin began with the commentariat (the closest thing we have to journalists, since no actual reporter would ever admit to being a Republican).

On the bright side, the fact that McMuffin only got 449,000 votes (163,000 of which came from Utah because, well, you know why). So in a "how many divisions has the Pope" kind of way, we now know exactly how "influential" they are. An army with a bunch of self-styled Field Marshals and no actual soldiers isn't much of an army.

On the less bright side, they did deny DJT a majority of the popular vote, leading to endless whining from the left. Thanks, guys. I'll remember that when it's time for your Christmas bonus.

292 Yeah Jeb would have been demolished in the election. The truth is, this was a change election and none of the GOP candidates represented such a star difference in tone and stance between them and Hillary like Trump did.

Its not that Donald Trump is so much in disagreement in policy with Hillary, I suspect they see eye to eye on quite a bit. Its that the key areas that are enraging people were so different: immigration, Political Correctness, national sovereignty, etc. On those areas, you had a choice of polar opposites, and Hillary represented not just more of the same but what everyone was fed up with. Trump represented a direct move away from that crap. And that's what pulled people to him.

They weren't voting for Donald Trump but against the stuff he was opposed to; that is they didn't see him as a great leader they all wanted in office, but the one that would stop the outrageous bullcrap.

305 >>I don't know if Rubio, or anyone, would have won the upper Midwest. Trump connected on a level that no one else connected on. That's what the polls missed. A millionaire connected with the guy that hasn't worked since the auto factory shut down. That's a thing.

The problems with these exercises is that they always start with the assumption that the campaign would have been run the same on both sides. They wouldm't have been.

It's like when people say "Oh I know X would have done much better hitting agains Y that Z did." There's no way of knowing because Y would have pitched differently against X.

Interesting discussion but the race would have been run on completely different grounds so it's really hard to know. Rubio likely wouldn't have done better with the midwest but I bet he would have done better in places like Nevada.

326 TBF, the smugness starts in college with a lot of these media types. They think that their job is to "change the world" and "make things better". It always seems to involved centralized, government action that leads to greater interference by bureaucrats in people's lives. All stories seem to end with the implication "...if we only had a government program" then all would be well.

$20 Trillion in debt later.

A lot of us have hated the media types for a long time. Yes, I used that word. Their smugness and contempt for anybody not in their little bubble is maddening. Eventually, I turned them off and refused to listen. I suggest others do the same and starve the beast. Choke-off it's revenues and watch it die in front of us. That would be the solution I would propose for anybody who wants to crush progressivism.

But he kept on and then their laughs became worried chuckles became fearful stutters became all out screams and fear mongering. He literally snowballed, gaining speed all the way. He refused to fit into their models and molds and charts. They were proven to be paper lions themselves with no real knowledge of anything. Personally, no, and I don't think Rubio or Cruz could have. Kasich was making something of those kind of arguments- connecting the problems of people in the heartland to a larger narrative- that I think helped Trump win them. But Kasich's problem is kind of the same as McCain's, in that he spent about as much time excoriating republicans for opposing democrats in ways he didn't like as he did being a republican.

I think that, while he had problems getting out of his own state, Scott Walker had a message and the ability to connect to people's concerns in a way that could have possibly resonated to those states. But Walker flamed out early for reasons already recounted here.

But Trump did fail in one of his big two assignments (from me, apparently they weren't passed on as I had been assured they would be) - getting Rubio out of not just the race, but politics in general.

No shortage of cosmetically pleasing role players to appeal to stupid, superficial (e.g., ethnic ID) voter instincts.

Rubio exudes the stature of a slippery medium-sized city councilmember, and he's quite a bit above his natural level already. So Trump already has one failure on his record, even before he's sworn in.

Posted by: rhomboid at November 10, 2016 04:44 PM (QDnY+)

I don't actually dislike Rubio as much as I appear to dislike him. I have major issues with his constantly changing positions and a huge huge huge problem with I am done no I'm not! But as a person and as a politician I don't necessarily dislike him.

That being said, he needs to decide whom he wishes to be. Is he the great propounder of First Principles the advancement of which he seeks? Or is he someone who will attempt to find a way to balance out the competing interests of the Left and the Right and seek to achieve some type of detente?
Either is fine, it's whiplashing between the two that's not.

No. No they're not "getting it". This is no more real than a little girl writing about who she intends to marry in her diary.

The people involved didn't just become this way on accident. It's congenital. It starts with the selection process that promotes idiot busybodies starting in high-school to play at being reporter to get scholarships.

Then take those busybodies that believe themselves to be instant expert on everyone elses' faults and and failures but absolutely no capability to admit or even recognize any of their own and train them up in full blown neo-marxist indoc and you get...

Modern Journalism.

They were hugely instrumental in giving direct aid and comfort to the domestic enemy for more than a full generation now. What we've been going through, they've willfully and knowingly helped create.

Never forget.
Never Forgive.
No mercy.

448 It seemed like the consensus was this "99% for the Hillary win!" that people like Nate Silver and every News Agency were pushing, even though when averaging all the polls, it was within that margin of error.
...
To be fair, Silver was 2-1 that Hillary would win. And even at that mark laid out a case that it would not take much to push Trump over the top. Plus, he doesn't poll, he runs a bunch of algorithms based off of other's polls.
Basically he was working with NOAA weather stations stuck to buoys or sitting on asphalt parking lots trying to predict future weather patterns. He came up with global warming as a trend but at least acknowledged that there was a very real chance it wasn't man made.

449 Well, ABC didn't get the memo yet.

Smugalopagus and Co. on GMA (God, I hate everything turned into an anagram) had a short piece on dealing with post-election "stress" and one of the anecdotes was a father saying how he put his little baby to bed Tuesday, saying that he just might wake up tomorrow to the news of the first woman prez.

But he was horrified with the morning news and had to tell baby that a monster had got elected.

All the anecdotes were like this. Everybody with the sadz.

No one happy.

The assholes just cannot help themselves. It is baked into them.

451 Unless the entire point of the polls was not to accurately report but to try to drive turnout in some areas and depress it in others. You all remember the general funereal air from before the election. People were grimly resolved, but do you not think that more would have turned out for Trump if their had been more hope of victory? I certainly do.
Posted by: Aetius451AD

Oh absolutely, had the polling showed Trump winning, I think he would have beat Hillary by several points in the popular vote.

I would say about 90% of my Republican friends thought Trump was going to lose. That makes such a difference with turnout, fundraising, getting people to the polls, etc.

It is a very effective strategy to make your opponent feel victory is hopeless. Fortunately we overcame it.

452 I don't like or dislike senators or other public figures, I assess them like one would a bridge abutment for its ability to do its job in supporting the overall structure.

Rubio's a lightweight with sub-lightweight substantive and political judgment. Doesn't mean he can't be useful as a robot vote for the right issues. And he's more impressive than poor old Thad Cochran.

If his name were Schmidt or DiGenova or Murphy everyone would be happy to bank his obedient robot votes on key issues and give him no more thought. I'm still happy to bank those votes if they come, but it would have been better overall if his mega-stupidity had been rewarded with expulsion from the national level of politics.

Whatever.

532 Guessing here, but with a lot of background on such crap - but I'm guessing the Saudi thing on US embassy/Jerusalem is kabuki anti-Zionist virtue signalling.

The disappearance of the US as a serious country in the region, and esp. the unbelievably foolish catastrophe of the Iran deal, "achieved" some extraordinary things. Among them a rapprochement between the Saudis and Israel that would not be believed by anyone who lived through 1948 to 1990.

But the Saudi family biz (for legitimacy, not $$$, that of course comes from the oil biz) is as custodian of the holy places, one of which is the Al-Aqsa mosque in al-Quds (you know what located you know where).

So posturing on this old and pretty stupid "controversy" signifies little.

I am dying, however, to see what the Scared S***less Sunni bloc in the Arab world (which now treats Israel as a de facto ally) does in reaction to the ascent of the Golden Scalp Weasel.

New York and California only look hard because most of the people taking it are writing English essays in their second or third language. Thus a low pass rate for what really is a pretty easy test. (I graduated in the bottom third of my law school class and passed on the first time. OTOH, really high LSAT score.)

There's only three ways to fail: panic, zero preparation and a genetic curse of low IQ.

Yes, no question.

I don't really doubt Cruz on his ideology (except on immigration) but the stunt he pulled at the Convention still grates on me. He will always be a giant douchebag in my eyes.

I would say yes, Bird in the hand, keeps you relevant for the rest of your life.

But I'd be worried, he would grow tired of it earlier than others might and want to get back into the political arena.

Amnesty has that rare quality of being a fully adequate, one-stop test for both substance and political acumen. Rubio failed the test in a way that would get the test center's director fired, the facility closed, and personnel re-assigned to other activities.

And the '86 amnesty was, in all respects, an entirely different question, both substantively and politically. Sadly have direct experience on that one.

Bossy,

One of Trump's character traits is he doesn't seem to keep grudges. I've know a few people like this, they'll be spitting mad one day and the next they will have forgotten all about whatever it was.

Besides, grudges are bad for business.

The one exception to this may be that it was Obama's relentless mockery of him at the Press dinner several years ago that may have been his inspiration for running for POTUS.

No. Pick someone NOW, someone off his list, vet him/her, get it through Congress the first two weeks in office.

No reason to nominate Cruz yet. Later.

616 The trouble with Cruz on the court is that he has too many anti-celebrity bona fides. 624 Can we get Newt as Speaker of the House and Sessions as Majority leader in the Senate? If the GOP really want to reassure me that they are going to work with Trump and undo some of the government bloat those two moves would go a long way towards reassuring me.

People mostly voted for Trump and an R ticket because the alternative to the R candidate was some commie punk D-rat, but I know that I am not yet convinced that all the GOP'ers are going to listen to the will of the people. They jumped in with the Dems to drive Newt out for some chickenshit ethics violation because he was cutting some of the government pork. Show me you are ready to reverse that mindset now.

en bloc clips and the BAR used a magazine. Same ammo. 20 rounds vs 8
rounds. Easier to reload.

Posted by: rickb223 at November 10, 2016 05:13 PM (WrQfI)

If memory serves, Garand originally designed the M1 with a detachable mag, but the Army balked because they didn't want to buy all the magazines as well as the rifles (granted, this was in the mid-30s when Army budgets were tiny). The en bloc was a compromise.

Gonna have to look that up to be sure, but that's my memory of the story.

I agree! Now they're going to cover the unemployed and underemployed who want to work, the people still paying underwater mortgages while others walked away, the American worker training his H1B replacement, the homeless of NYC (with Trump property as the backdrop)... all in TRUMP's America.

Exactly, the most self-congratulatory "sophisticated" group ignored one of the earliest proverbs specifically against superficiality: "never judge a book by its cover".

Of course, we're also taught to "play nice", but 1) liberals don't like authority (except when it's theirs), 2) and there is just too much hay to be made with Alinskyan ridicule. So, mocking people on their looks--something we would hope people would get over by the end of high school: that's a key play for "sophisticates".

It they don't think they understand that "sophist" doesn't necessarily need a suffix.
