World Series Game 2 [BCochran]

world series .jpg

Well. That was something to behold.

So Game 1 went to the Indians 6-0.

Corey Kluber continued his postseason dominance by throwing 6+ innings and allowing 0 runs on 4 hits with 9 strikeouts. That brings his postseason numbers to 3-1, 0.74 ERA, 24 1/3 Innings Pitched, 29 Strikeouts, and a WHIP of 0.99. Impressive numbers to say the least.

Now my ranting about Jon Lester. I was stunned by his performance. I thought he looked nervous/rattled/out of sorts from the start. His command of his pitches showed it. This guy is a veteran. A 2 time World Champion. And yet he looked like he was about to explode. Beyond that....this throwing thing. What. The. Hell? He hasn't thrown over to first in like a year and a half? He has the yips? Jon you are a 2 time World Champ, an 11 year vet, a 4 time All Star, and the 2016 NLCS MVP. Get your sh*t together, Jon. There is no excuse for this. It's in your head? Go work it out. I mean that literally. You go stand out there with a bucket of balls and throw to first base. Over and over. Day after day. You work your ass off at your craft. You do it until you're comfortable and confident. I'm stunned Maddon has allowed this to go on. It's ridiculous.

The Tribe's offensive firepower was due, in large part, to one man: Roberto Perez. Perez hit a solo HR in the 4th and then blasted a 3 run bomb in the 8th. Francisco Lindor seemed to be all over the base paths every time I looked up. A good contact swing and speed to burn is a dangerous combo.

It's not all bad for the Cubs. Kluber is clearly the ace and now they've seen him. The rest of the Indians' starting rotation is....not as good. They also saw the return of Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber missed the entire season due to a knee injury. In fact, his first recorded hit of the 2016 season was a double off the wall last night. And finally, they really have the advantage in pitching matchups not including Kluber. Tonight will see 2015 Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta face off against he of the bloody finger, Trevor Bauer.

My guess, for whatever it's worth, is that Bauer will exit early and the Cubs tie the series tonight.

Final, interesting, side note: Terry Francona is now 9-0 in the World Series. I mean...Damn.

As always, thanks to Ace and MisHum. Enjoy the game!

I was watching Tito chew his sunflower seeds last night and he so reminds me of Robert Wohl (?) as the manager in Bull Durham.

So you have Tito and the guy whose name I'm spacing on now on the one side, and Theo Epstein and Lester on the other. It's hard for a Red Sox fan to know how to root.

Except, of course, for the fear of the raptoring.

118 The Cubs are one of the worst hitting teams in the majors against curve balls, something like a .200 average, and Bauer has one of the best curve balls in the game (something like a .180 BAA). I'm on a train and only listening to the game, and Bauer hasn't yet got control of his curve, but when he does he is fully capable of shutting down the Cubs.

203 I read that in Babe Ruth's day, games averaged about an hour and a half, and hour long games were not uncommon. No pauses for commercial breaks, fewer pitching changes and much less dicking around, stepping out of the batters box and so on.

MLB should address that (and put some time limit on replay challenges for Gods sake - I saw a game this year where waiting for the call from NY took 5 minutes) instead of the boneheaded idea of just waving the batter to first rather than pitching 4 balls.

I've seen games where a pitch for an intentional walk went wild and a run scored as a result.

Ha! I have a brand new progressive(!) press and I've never loaded a single round on it. I bought it, set it up, looked at it, took it apart, put it on a shelf, and bought a single stage press. I load everything single stage. I am nowhere close to being coordinated enough to have five things going on at once and not blow myself up.

That's right JTB. IMR 4895 and a 150 gr bullet at around 2700-2800 fps. I just can't resist trying to mess with the velocity and seating depth trying to optimize the load. I also understand the IMR4895 is a lot more temperature sensitive than I'm used to in rifle powders. I should probably quit trying to reinvent the wheel and just copy the recipe.

I think I would have liked the Dead Ball Era. Home runs should be the rarest of hits, and most of them should be inside-the-park. That's more exciting that watching the batter posing at the plate admiring his handiwork before trotting around the bases.

243 I'm ok with the amount of homers hit now. I might raise the mound up an inch or two just to tilt things a slight bit more in favor of pitchers.

What I don't like is the selfish attitude of hitters. The inability/refusal to bunt is the perfect example.

Posted by: musical jolly chimp at October 26, 2016 08:26 PM (WTSFk)

Yes and no. Yes, of course, a manager can make the call to put a specific play on. But at this level, the players do most things on their own initiative.

When Lindor makes it to first, the manager isn't signaling for him to steal on a specific pitch usually. Lindor knows that if he can take the base, he takes the base. Get it wrong too many times though and that privilege will be taken from you. Along with the manager reaming you out.

Cleveland's leadoff hitter did it against the Blue Jays last series. And I'm fairly sure I saw one of the Cubs do it in the series with LA.

Bunting is an absolute lost art.

When I played in high school, my catcher was the slowest guy in the lineup. On the chubby side of life. Our senior year he probably had 6-10 bunt base hits. The other team would see him, assume (correctly) that he was slow, and so they would play deep in order to cover more ground knowing they had the extra time to throw him out. So this "fat slow guy" worked hard at being able to drag bunt. He would square at the last second and put the bunt down the 3rd baseline, pretty much walk to first, and then stand there smiling.

Cobb stole 96 bases in 1915, and that record stood until Maury Wills stole 104 in 1962.

However, it appears that there were a LOT of stolen bases in the 1880s and 1890s. I don't know if the scoring rules were different then or what.

Posted by: tbodie at October 26, 2016 08:51 PM (Bpc14)

278 261 ... Scoggdog, Don't give up. Just remove the spiral piece that rotates the turret when you pull down on the handle and it becomes a single stage press. Much easier to use that way. You can even set the dies into the turret, already adjusted, then just rotate the turret by hand when you are ready to use that die.

Don't know what calibers you're reloading, but unless you need to crank out huge amounts of ammo a single stage approach will do the job just fine. A good press like the Lee turret and dies should be a once in a lifetime purchase. Mine is over 30 years old and going strong. Same with the dies. I enjoy reloading for its own sake and it really does save me money or at least allows me to shoot more than if I had to rely on commercial ammo.

Just gently set aside the press and start with a single stage press FIRST (which are relatively inexpensive) Reloading is a lot of fun and very rewarding hobby in its own right. I can't say you will save tons of money, but you will sure shoot more.
What caliber dies do you have? I suggest starting with a straight walled handgun cartridge (38/357/45) until you get the hang of things, then move on to bottleneck cartridges.

Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty. Just finished it myself. Great book. Amazing what a lazy journalist did to his reputation and how eagerly everyone was to lap up the lies told about him that made him a monster.

But almost to a man, anyone who saw Cobb play when asked: Cobb or Ruth? Would say Cobb. Apparently the best that ever played.

And being an SF Giants fan, I am a fan of Cobb style of making things happen and manufacturing runs. HRs are exciting but good pitching and grinding out runs is a better game.

392 Game 2 of the 1912 World Series ended in a 6-6 tie after 11 innings. It was called on account of darkness. It went into the books as a tie, and it counted towards the players' individual statistics. That Series went 8 games, with the Red Sox beating the Giants 4 games to 3.

Posted by: rickl the deplorable at October 26, 2016 09:31 PM (sdi6R)

393 Buck doesn't even know the game.

Schwarber wasn't warming up his bat. There's pine tar on the upper part of the handle. He was warming it up so it wold get tacky. Then he grips that part of the bat a couple times, as we all saw. Pine tar transfers to gloves, makes them a little sticky, improves grip on bat.

If there are others they're probably the more easy to overlook late-career journeymen... Platoon players, good bat off the bench, mid-season trade types.

Someone like a Michael Morse (who by the way was an outstanding SF Giant even though he was only here for 2014). Such a fan favorite. When the Marlins came to town in 2015 they presented him the ring in a pre-game ceremony. Doesn't hurt that he had some clutch pinch hits that post-season. Namely the 8th inning home run against the Cards that tied that game that set up Ishikawa's 9th inning walk-off for the pennant.

I still pull up those clips. Especially because I get to hear Joe Buck - the Cards suck-up - announce the Giants won the pennant. That fucker really seems to hate the Giants.

That's the thing about baseball. When you live and breathe the game your entire life, egos will allow coaches to venture into areas where they should not belong.

And I can see putting coaches getting in the heads of hitters by offering up well meaning advice on opposing pitching.

It's best to keep it simple and not think too much.

529 Alright, I'm heading out. Nervous. Tonight will be the first time since my shoulder surgery, little over 6 weeks ago, that I'll be attempting to sleep in the bed instead of the recliner.

Have had a "minor" (to who I don't know) setback over the last week that's resulted in a good bit of pain. And of course I get an ortho that's stingy with pain meds.

Anywho, if I don't see y'all before then, I'll see ya in the Game 3 thread Friday night.

Hope you are enjoying the Series and the threads. G'night.

going to be a permanent fix, or not. I'm pretty tired of being poked at
so my new answer to every doctor is "feels great!"'

Weasel, I've had two catheter ablation procedures for atrial fib, the first in September 2007 and the second in October 2008. The second one cured me. Since then, I've done all of the stuff that I didn't dare do before - dance, scuba dive, take long wilderness hikes - without worrying whether I'd trigger an attack that would leave me nearly helpless. Also, as a bonus, I'm off all meds: No more anti-arrhythmia drugs! No more warfarin!

I hope your result is like mine; if it is, I think you'll find that life has just gotten a whole lot sweeter. Best of luck to you!
