Derek Hunter: Why I, A Long-Time NeverTrumper, Now Feel Compelled to Vote For The Guy I Don't Like In the Least

Great piece.

I say it's great not because it's a (grudging) endorsement of Trump (and is there any other kind?)

I say it's great because it contains something alien to most NeverTrumpers -- honesty and a sort of taking-the-piss-out-of-myself reflectiveness.

I don't know about you, but I'm sick of reading convicted assholes' strident manifestos about their purported personal virtue and putative high principle.

Last time a Clinton was on the ballot, I voted for Ross Perot. My vote didn't deny Bob Dole the White House, but I confess I felt a smug sense of satisfaction in "refusing to settle." I sure showed them, didn't I?

I haven’t been as vocal as other "Never Trump" writers...

PS, a weary nation thanks you for that.

...but neither have I hidden my dislike or tempered my criticism. In a field of 17 Republican candidates, Donald Trump wouldn’t have been my 18th choice. I’m still not a fan. But they didn’t just ask me; they asked everyone. And more of everyone chose Donald Trump.

I couldn’t do it, I just couldn’t. For countless reasons I’ve covered over the last year, I dug in my heels and proudly basked in my self-satisfaction. I still defended Trump in this column and on social media when he was wrongly attacked by the left and the media, but I was steadfast in my opposition to the man.

So what changed?

Not Trump...

[Me.' Not through introspection and reflection, but through watching the sickening display of activism perpetrated by a covert army with press credentials....

The media needs to be destroyed. And although voting for Trump won’t do it, it's something. Essentially, I am voting for Trump because of the people who don't want me to, and I believe I must register my disgust with Hillary Clinton.

I've long said that politics isn't about who you like; it's about who you hate.

I've remained consistent in who I hate -- the media, as Derek Hunter does. The smug cabal of those who have not won power nor earned it, but have simply grown up around it, or whose daddy got them jobs in the Political-Media complex.

A lot of "consistent conservatives" have changed dramatically on that point: Who they hate, who they long to defeat, isn't the Political-Media Complex.

It's these deplorable, trashy "populist" Republican voters! They must be taught a lesson -- that they have no voice nor place in the GOP, and they will not be permitted to hijack a pristine party that only executed a Southern Strategy here or there as a youthful indiscretion and turn the keys of power over to the "alt-right," which apparently is such a large force in GOP politics (not a fringe element, as these "consistent conservatives" used ot maintain) that no less dramatic action can save us from these racist, Nazi hordes than NeverTrump Republicans supporting Hillary Clinton with all the breath in their sunken chests.

Meanwhile, they don't seem to realize that defeating one hated Foreign Tribe (GOP voters) winds up rewarding another Foreign Tribe (Democrats and the Media).

But I suppose those tribes aren't as hated as they once were by these "consistent conservatives."

Because they're not as foreign a tribe as they pretend to be.

Hillary will have a blank check.

If one really is torn between the two candidates, this should be enough to decide.

18 Question: These Establishment Republicans lectured us for years that politics is the art of the possible and that they are the experts in getting the most out of any particular scenario.

Okay, great. So why can't you cut a deal with Trump? Why can't you, you know, politic? It's not like the guy isn't open to wheeling and dealing.

Aren't you the experts? You're saying if this guy is president, you can't achieve anything to advance conservatism, but will be able to under Hillary Clinton?

Really?

19 Honestly, I'm right there with him. While I have never been a "Never Trumper," my energy and devotion to Trump is far below what I would have given to any other (or real) Republican. I still refuse to work at the polls for Trump.

All that said, the incredible hypocrisy of the leftists and their lackeys in the media (but I repeat myself) provides sufficient justification for me to hold my nose and vote for Trump. Hey, we can always impeach him!

Who is bankrolling Even McMullin in Utah?

I'm only guessing, but I believe he's only really running in Utah so he can throw the state to clinton.

There's an outside chance Gary Johnson could win New Mexico or Colorado, which will hurt clinton more then Trump.

But Trump can't afford to lose Utah's measely electoral votes.

I think it would be better for the republic, such as it is, for Trump to win on a lot of levels.

40 A lot of "consistent conservatives" have changed dramatically on that point: Who they hate, who they long to defeat, isn't the Political-Media Complex.

Devil's advocate, slightly - From the get-go Trump has been framed as a nazi. If the 1/2 the Democratic party went full nazi, I'd congratulate the other half who suddenly realized their interests were better aligned with the Republicans. So my response to never trumpers isn't to get angry at them, it's to try to calm them down and see how predictable and proportionate Trump is all the time. As sure as the sun shines, if someone throws a pie at Trump, they are going to get a brick-filled pie thrown back at them. But he doesn't firebomb them, and the instant they stop throwing pies Trump proudly declares how they're great friends again.

The horror!

Scott Adams has consistently talked about large groups of people being hypnotized and he talks about it literally, not metaphorically. Adam's position is "If you believe Trump is a nazi you have been hypnotized."

Or Trump is a nazi and they're right, but I very much doubt it.

So yeah let's bust their balls and good but leave the door open for them to change their minds again when the spell wears off. Poor things can't help themselves.

53 Voting for Trump isn't going to do shit about the media. The silver lining, I told myself when it became clear that Trump would win the nomination, is that Trump will be able to take it to the media. He hasn't. His feeble, empty threats to sue the NYT are the latest example of his complete inability to control the narrative (not that any other nominee in recent history has done any better).

Until there's some sort of accountability in the MFM, conservatism will continue to flounder. Hillary's stooges, just like the Journolisters before them, suffer no consequences for their propoganda campaigns.

I don't know what the answer to the lefty media is, but Trump isn't it. This isn't an argument against voting Trump, just an observation that voting Trump to punish the media is an empty gesture. Vote for Trump because you think he'll build the wall, vote for him because you hate/fear Hillary, vote for him because you hope he'll grab your pussy. Whatever. But don't try and trick yourself into thinking that you're stabbing at the heart of the media. Trump has been nothing but a windfall to them.

Posted by: Xander Crews at October 26, 2016 05:05 PM (Gx9/j)

54 What I'm sick of is everybody first saying how much they hate Trump and/or find him to be a terrible lunatic before announcing they are voting for him/supporting him.

Good Lord, with all the liars, psychos, and crooks being exposed and still having no shame that the same people could not wait to vote for in the past, Trump comes off as a Founding Father compared to them. He is not a politician who frames and makes every decision that will be transparent based on optics.

Nobody has campaigned on the ground has hard as him against a global one party system. And he is actually fighting for Americans and people still have to shit on him first before announcing they are supportong/voting for him.

18 months ago I thought he was a British clown. Now he is the most authentic American running for office than even my Grandparents have ever seen everyday fighting and pressing the flesh.

Trump completely turned me off and I groaned when he won. I did a lot of soul searching. Of course I was never going to vote for Hillary. Out of the question. But I couldn't justify in my own mind voting for Trump. I decided to not vote at all.

Until a couple of things happened. One, Phyllis Schafly came out in strong support for Trump. But mainly, the very thoughtful writings of Eric Metaxas, a conservative Christian author, highly regarded for his scholarship. He laid out a case for Trump that made sense to me.

Thirdly, I am acquainted with one of the pastors on the Evangelical Advisory team that is helping Trump better understand the importance of religious liberty and life issues, etc. I have confidence in this pastor and feel that he is doing his best to be faithful in his task.

So I am voting for Trump. I'm not doing any cartwheels over it, but I will be at the ballot box on Election Day.

83 "Illegal immigration violates the civil rights of African Americans."
____________________

It violates the civil rights of every American, regardless of their skin color.

Illegal immigration is costing U.S. taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars every year -- at a time when we have record-high levels of debt, and can't even afford to pay for the healthcare we promised to our own veterans.

At the state and local level, public schools full of illegal aliens run up our property taxes, and jails full of illegal alien criminals run up our state taxes.

And the media cover none of this. They simply scream "raaaaacism" every time any American objects to the Obama administration flying in illegal alien kids at our expense, or ordering BP not to pick up illegal aliens or enforce immigration laws, or suing states like AZ for trying to enforce immigration laws.

101 Question: These Establishment Republicans lectured us for years that politics is the art of the possible and that they are the experts in getting the most out of any particular scenario.

Really?

Posted by: Warden

Trump is the wrong kind of Republican. They want globalism, so the right kind of people can make money in the global to and fro of trade and banking and money counting.
No, it's not that simple. But Trump has been consistently a Nationalist for many years, whether he espoused Republican or Democrat party identities.

That is what they CANNOT STAND!! AlextheChick linked to a great article my Matthew Continetti the other day which absolutely spelled it out. And Continetti is Bill Kristol's son -in-law, according to AtC.

I'm 60 years old, and have watched the de-industrialization of my state, Ohio, for most of my conscious life. Why, I ask? What will replace much of the lost means of creating wealth?

No answer. I am doing alright as I am working in a kind of "knowledge" business job, but I see a lot of people near my age scrambling, because the companies they worked for, the careers they developed, become down-sized, obsolete, and they were let go.

It stinks. I don't think Trump can reverse this, or greatly change course. But Hillary and her crew are ALL IN to continue, and import more immigrants to work cheap and dilute our national sense of value, the American "sense of life" that we were all allegedly raised with. The America I was born into is gone, but the question is, will ANYTHING be left in a generation except multi-culti hogwash and PC pandering to whatever interest group is squawking today.

What the Globalists really hate is hanging onto American Exceptionalism, but Trump doesn't reject that. Trump is a flawed vessel, but I think he essentially understands this very basic point.

And another four years will be too late. There will be a lot less to conserve.

For shits and giggles, I recommend asking a typical heartland Republican voter whether or not they're concerned about the influence of the "alt-right" within the party.

I've done this several times now. None of those with whom I spoke had the faintest idea what I was referring to by that term.

One fellow ventured cautiously, "The 'out right'? The Republican gays like Peter Thiel? They're just fine with me."

Which just goes to show how fiendish the plot by the alt-right is! And how effective their conspiracy! They're wielding enormous power within the party while somehow also remaining utterly unpercieved by the party.

I vividly recall the angry personal attacks against people who grumbled about mccain and romney. Those who did were treated as traitors -- the lowest of the low. Total scum. They said "support the nominee no matter what. You may not like Romney, but THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY!! What? Do you hate America?!" (barely exaggerating...)

"Populism" in the hands of the NeverTrumpers is just a label used to dismiss policy positions they don't agree with but which are more popular than their own.

The term smacks of ignorance and demagoguery, and by using the term they hope to avoid having to defend their own policies on the merits, because they know their policies are unpopular and not in the interests of those whose votes they are trying to get.

Funny how whenever some manipulated poll is put forth showing popular support for 'comprehensive immigration reform' or 'the TPP' or some other policy the NeverTrumpers agree with, they never label their own position the "populist" position.

I don't object to anyone repeating the position that they believe we have bad choices this year. One just happens to be MASSIVELY worse that the other, because she is 100% certain to be an aggressive progressive statist, and she already has an embedded cadre of allies and fellow travelers infesting the rest of government and media who will grease the skids for her.

At least with Trump, there is at least some chance that he will accomplish at least some of the things he's saying he wants to do, and even if he acts (as I think is in his nature) to exceed the constitutionally defined powers of office, there will be actual checks against him. Unlike the "oh, we just can't confront the historic mocha boy prince" abdication of power the GOPe has given us during the Choom Dynasty.

177 I have been a Trump supporter since he first started to run in 2015. At that time he published a book called Crippled America which spelled out his program, listed his accomplishments, and even included his financial statement in the appendix. I read it and was on board. He has been true to his promises in that book, although I have never seen it mentioned, especially in the MSM.

I am retired and don't have much $$, but I have donated $100 to Trump.

Only once before have I acted out politically, and that was eight years ago when I saw the threat of an Obama presidency. I went to the state McCain office and volunteered to pick up and drive voters to the polls. I also got a McCain sign and put it in my yard. A few days later, my sign and my house were vandalized. It was a widespread occurrence around the Albuquerque, NM area. When I told the McCain campaign head about it, she told me they had more than a hundred reports like that. They informed the local rag, and they ran a short story on the inside pages.

The next morning there was an anonymous phone call to the area media reporting that an Obama sign had had a (gasp!) swastika painted on it. This made headline news in both print and electronic media. All it took was for some Donk apparatchik to spend a few seconds spray painting an Obama sign and the media pulled out all the stops to level the blame at evil Republicans. Nowhere did I see the media even entertain the possibility that it might have been a false flag event, which it almost certainly was. It was blood libel, and it works.

And, trust me about that because, the terror tactics worked in my case. My wife, who was in fragile mental health, was so concerned about the vandalism and implied threats to our privacy and safety that she refused to allow me to drive people to the polls. AND, she was too scared even to go to the polls and vote. That was one vote McCain did not get, thanks to the terror tactics of the Donk party.

Yes, as Islamists know, terrorism works, and it is also a primary tactic of the Democratic party that is trying to steal this election for Hillary. They are pulling out all the stops this time and the media is carrying their water by the bucket full.

We must stop them. We must stop her. I will now go back to lurking, but I am here every day.

I mean a part of me doesn't mind federal employees from donating money so we can use that as an illustration of how biased they are... but another part of me says no way is it right for a govt employee to have any say in an election. They are donating to/ voting themselves a raise. That seems like a mega conflict of interest.

Same with unions that represent gov't employees. When the govt was small and employees were churned based on who won the election (the "bad old days" of the "spoils system") it was a less pronounced issue.

Now though? I don't know, it doesn't seem right to me.

Truman was such a foul-mouthed shithead. He came out of dirty Missouri machine politics. The Democrat Party slid him in as the Roosevelt VP because they knew Roosevelt was about dead when he was re-elected in 1944, and they all thought they could manipulate Truman. And to a degree, that was true. Revisionism has made him a saintly, noble populist American, but read some of the things he said and did while he was President.
He is a lot more like Joe Biden than anyone else. Except he could play the piano, badly.

He wanted to push National Healthcare when he was President. It was more follow-up socialism to Roosevelt's New Deal politics.

When he first started this campaign I would say, "He is a useful tool to help say and do things to the media/establishment/GOP/et al that need to be said/done." That was when I grudgingly endorsed him.

But after watching the battering he is willing to withstand I have come to respect him. Or his fortitude at least. Now I am full throated in voicing my support for him.

He may say crap that drives me crazy. He may not attack in the way I would like to see him attack. He may be a narcissistic political buffoon. See the hotlink in my sock; and there's this partial quote from Jonah Goldberg (I won't link to the whole column that was for a newspaper and not at NRO):

Consider independent write-in candidate for president Evan McMullin. He has virtually no chance of winning the election on Nov. 8, but he does have a shot at becoming president by the end of December.

It's a long shot. Very long. But if McMullin managed the greatest upset of all time, it would be a very good thing, and not just because so many of us would rather see someone other than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump in the White House.

298 National presidential politics has devolved to something like the NYC mayoral politics I've seen over 40 years.

Expect Trump to be a Giuliani-like pragmatist with NYC bridge-and-tunnel values, which is what we need right now. And for his Mad Media Skilzz.

Rudy narrowly won on his second-try, after which he was attacked on a daily basis by media elites. Rudy's response was to politely tell media to fuck off and die, and then did what he thought was best for NYC. He got re-elected in a landslide and even won in Manhattan. It changed the course of NYC history dramatically.

I expect something similar on a national level.

322 On the Dem side, Hillary's nomination was a foregone conclusion. She was not going to be denied again, and rigged her own primary to make doubly sure of that.

On the Rep side, Trump was nowhere near my first choice. I (in no particular order) was pulling for Perry, Walker or Cruz. (I also was not going to vote Jeb!, Christie or Rubio). By the time my state's primary rolled around, Perry and Walker were gone, and Cruz was a long shot, but I voted for him anyway. When Trump won the nomination, I told my wife, "Well, now it's a contest between a man who should not become President versus a woman who cannot become President.".

If Trump wins and does nothing but sit in the Oval Office for four years playing Candy Crush, he would still have a better Presidency than Hillary.

I just want Hillary to lose, the media to lose, and the spineless elements in the GOP to lose. A Trump win goes a long way towards fulfilling all that.

The theory is that neither Trump nor Hillary get enough electoral votes to put them over the top. So, the election gets thrown into the House. Once the House gets it, they can give it to anyone who has any electoral votes. If McMuffin wins Utah, even if that is his only win, the GOPe in the House can award him the presidency.

343 First, he didn't deny Bob Dole the White House. It was the re-election of Bush Sr. who ended up losing to Clinton. What I disagree with him on is back then, Perot was a fantastic candidate with perhaps the best resume of the entire 20th century. Perhaps only outdone by Eisenhower. As a fellow Perot voter I still say that if it wasn't for the team red/blue voters we may not have had to deal with either Bush Jr. or Clinton. That said Ace and he have a point that I would take a step further. There are no more Ross Perots. There are also very few candidates who actually will represent the people who elect them. The vast majority lock into the elite/progressive agenda of fleecing the public, graft, greed, etc. as soon as they get to Washington. There is truly only one party in power and that is the progressive party that exists to expand their power and their wealth. I also didn't pick Trump. Not my choice. Yet, this election is so different from that one. This election isn't really about conservative principles, limited government, or even healthcare. It is about metaphorically slapping the cr*p out of the elites. They have screwed up this country so bad that regardless of who is elected bad stuff is going to happen. The only difference is whether we have a candidate that minimizes the consequences or one that make things worse. That's it. Country as a whole is afu regardless of who wins, it is simply how afu it is and whether you want to smack those smug jerks in the face. I vote for smacking them. Hard. Go Trump.

414 344 First, he didn't deny Bob Dole the White House. Hard. Go Trump.

++++

Bush Sr. was the first guy to lose to Clinton. Dole was the GOP candidate against Clinton's reelection in 1996. Perot was a candidate in both races. Clinton did not get over 50% of the votes either time.

Assuming every Perot voter had gone with Dole in 1996, Dole would have won.

424 Pretty sure Trump is married to one and is the son of one (his wee Scots mother), so I'm guessing Trump is OK with LEGAL immigrants, too. In fact, not to parse hairs, but there are no illegal immigrants, just illegal aliens.

Actually, I thought about putting the "legal" qualifier in my remarks, but removed it because really, the net result is the same. First, BUILD THE WALL and enforce the hell out of the borders. But then, you really have to make some decisions about the people to whom you do want to make legal immigration available. Non-skilled laborers and non-assimilating Muslim refugees... no thanks. Single, English speaking Eastern European women who want to get married and raise English speaking children in a capitalist society? Yeah. They're only a generation out from real fear-the-party strongman Socialism, they can raise kids to know how freakin' lucky they are to be born in the USA *if they can keep it free*.

Truth be told, the people who have been burning down the Republican party are the GOPe.

In California, the party has been nearly completely burnt down. It is now about as relevant in state politics as the Whig party. Thanks, GOPe.

Continuing the GOPe policies of open borders immigration and de-industrializing our workforce is burning down the Republican party in the rest of the country, too.

Trump is actually building UP the Republican party by expanding its appeal to the working class.

It's called Sweet-and-Sour Coleslaw. (sugar, celery seed, dry mustard, salt, pepper, cider vinegar and olive oil)

I have no idea how the state will go. The Dems have built up a pretty good cheating setup in Denver and Boulder, but they wanted Oregon margins and put in vote by mail in 2013. That worked out not as well as their early voting cheating setup in 2014 and D Mark (Uterus) Udall was tossed for Cory (longtime GOP party loyalist) Gardner.

I drive a place that had Hillary and Jared Polis (HOR) signs a month ago and the last week or so has only had the Polis sign still out so even thought the local MFM is doing their best for the Hildabeast the wikileaks and other internet truth nuggets may be convincing some of the socialist idealist types that it would be better if Hillary is defeated so they can get Warren? or somebody they think wont be in *Wall Street's* pocket in 2020.

473 I'm upset. I have my own garbage dumpster and I went to throw away my kitchen trash bag today and there was a dead deer in the dumpster. How the hell did it get there? It was startling to say the least, and I'm not sure what to do.
Posted by: L, Elle at October 26, 2016 06:06 PM (6IPEM)

An entire deer? Or the leftover deer from someone who butchered out the meat? People think dumpsters are public property for some reason. They probably dropped it in there sometime overnight.

Call your trash pick up and ask them if they will accept it.

486 In the rush to vilify Trump, I find my self treated to all manner of articles & analyses about how Trump isn't spending money on a ground game; Trump isn't spending money on GotV efforts; Trump isn't sending any money to the GOP; Trump isn't paying attention to the polls; Trump isn't working with the GOP. We've all been seeing these pieces, haven't we?

Which is funny, in the sense that for the past four years we've been hearing about how horrible the political consultants have been; how much of a revolving door they utilize; how they don't have any new ideas but just regurgitate the same ones over and over; how the GOP hierarchy is ruining the party; and so on and on. But now we have Trump doing it all differently from the established order, and the whole freakin' gang of GOP elites is having the vapors about it. For four-plus years we've been hearing about how horrible the the campaign paradigm has been, and when presented with a different model, they all go into paroxysms of bile-spewing hatred because Trump isn't following the usual model.

Trump isn't following the usual, failing model - I'm supposed to be distressed about it?

McMullin wins Utah, neither Trump nor Hillary get the 270 electoral votes necessary, election is thrown to the House to decide. The thinking is that House members will vote to make McMullin President because he is the just most gosh darn bestest person ever to run for President, i.e., establishment RINO.

I don't know about you, but I'm guessing the roughly 120 million American voters who voted for Trump or Hillary aren't going to cotton to having a guy who probably gets under 500K votes nationally as President.

For many of the reasons he states, though? I changed my stance. I'm not so much voting for Trump as I am against the GOPe and the entire D.C. establishment, the media, the FSA, the SJWs, and Clinton.

533 Good for Newt! Next time he needs to ask her point blank if she had been tipped off to the Billy Bush/Trump video/audio PRIOR to the August 2015 primary debate where she went after Trump as saying hateful and demeaning things about women...AND specifically predicting this would be used against him in the general election.

At the time it seemed bold and brave. But now, with the presence of that video, had she been tipped off it was nothing but a sure-fire self promoting opportunity with guaranteed vindication.

I believe very strongly she knew about it and that is newsworthy. She might also have known about some of the accusers. She needs to be asked when she was made aware of the video and some of these accusers.

But, like Michael Moore said, I felt that a massive "f*** you" was in order. To the Clintons and all the privilege, wealth and cluelessness buoying them up. I'm a female voter in North Carolina and have been inundated by fliers about Trump's crudeness to women, on behalf of the Clinton "put some ice on that" machine. So, all in all I'm at peace.

I'm wondering if all the pundits are underestimating voter anger. But that could be just me projecting.
