Penitent Magdalene Cara.jpg

Penitent Magdalene
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

And below the fold another version from Donatello, completed about 150 years earlier, but, at least to me, eerily reminiscent of modern sculpture.

The contrast is amazing....

Donatello,_maria_maddalena_02.JPG

Penitent Magdalene
Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi (Donatello)

mustbequantum had this to say yesterday:

As far as 'modern' art, I would defy anyone to look at Donatello's 'Penitent Magdalene' and not see modernity and brutal realism. Mostly, we think of his smooth and pretty David, but he really did something there. I think CBD has mentioned it, but I think it would be a great discussion piece.

10 Senior White House officials blocked the Navy from conducting needed freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea amid growing concerns that China is militarizing newly reclaimed islands, according to the Pentagons Defense Policy Board.

A working paper produced in September 2015 by John Hamre, the policy board chairman, called for an immediate resumption of Navy warship passages to prevent China from taking over the strategic Southeast Asian waterway.

The internal document was disclosed Monday by WikiLeaks as part of its latest batch of hacked emails from the account of John Podesta, campaign chairman for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

17 Valeria Corvino's 'Pentient Magdalene' is the best of them all, I think, and one of the major factors that prompted me to transition fully from painting into sculpting--which is a strange thing an artist to do at my age, I know, but what the hell.

Of the arts, the emotive power of fully realized works in the round is rivaled only by music, in my view.

23 I did contract work at nuke plants around the country and one place was a plant in NY. Hillary visited the plant often and would take pleasure in telling the workers at the plant that she was going to see that they all lost their jobs because she wanted the plant closed. Workers at the plant would whistle the witch riff from Wizard of Oz whenever she was oozing around the plant.

45 I can appreciate the workmanship of the wood sculpture. But it looks like something out of The Walking Dead or one of the dancers in the Thriller video. It actually distracts from the moral of the story.

The Caravaggio is much more subdued but more effectively portrays the moment. Mary Magdalene is realizing how she has lived and will live into the future. It is an awesome sea change in attitude and action but is a very personal one. Something done in the privacy of her chamber.

My girlfriend is passionate about defending Mary Magdelene and thinks Mary's traditional portrayal as a prostitute/adulteress was the result ofdisciples and/or early Christians who sullied her name out of jealousy.

I don't think it matters. If the perception of Mary Magdalene as a whore somehow makes people carrying the weight of sexual sin think, 'Jesus can love me, too', then that perception, however misguided or pernicious, serves good purpose.

75 The video of the Trump supporters shutting down some SJW libs is gold.

Note how angry the leftists are.
And how cheerful the Trump people are.

Who is winning, who acts like they're winning?

And, I've been thinking about Scott Adams' post yesterday about how Hillary represents the bully, her and her supporters can only bully others, not persuade or engage.

That's true. When I was on FB (I quit a week ago), all the Hillary supporters had ever done was post shit along the lines of "Trump is a horrible, horrible person and so are you if you support him."
That's 91% of the media coverage, too.
They'll play a clip of Trump and each and every "analyst" will shout, "Don't you losers believe your eyes and ears--what he just said was the most horrible, racist, misogynistic, evil thing ever!!! And you are too, if you agree with Trump!!"

How much of that is NOT showing up in the polls, the silent "FU" vote? The seething anger at being bullied, forced, lied to and told what to do?

Every bit counts - do not believe ANY polls - and even in deep blue states it is important that we goose up totals - even if we cannot take the state it helps with the overall electorat/ popular vote picture. If Trump pulls this out (and I think he will btw) we want him to be well above 50% in popular vote - not just ahead on the Electoral College alone - so we can shut the f*cking liberals who will try , immediately, to scream "illegitimate" (even though three weeks before they were claiming that doing so was" totes a a threat to our democracy, dude!"

In the Gnostic gospel of Mary she's a whole 'nuther thing. I quite like the Gnostic gospels as they add a Zen element to the Jesus story, but I know that's not popular among actual believers.

It was rather common for the rich and powerful to commission portraits of themselves in character as the various saints and such, both in contemporary and period garb.

Plus, even if it wasn't part of the commission, artist would put the faces of contemporary people into their works, sometimes with hilarious effect. Michaelangelo was good with that. When the Pope's Master of Ceremonies Biagio da Cesena harshly criticized Michaelangelo for putting nudes in The Last Judgement, Michaelangelo retaliated by putting him in the painting....... in Hell as Minos, nude, with donkey's ears and a snake biting him in the dick. As you can imagine, da Cesena was pissed, and complained to the Pope who replied that the Pope's authority only extended to spiritual and temporal matters on THIS world, not the next. "If Michaelangelo has put you in Hell, I don't have the authority to get you out."

Gnosticism is a blight. It's also disguised itself over the centuries but its central tenets remain essentially the same. The statue's wretched appearance is wholly consistent with her role in Christianity. By all accounts, Jesus well and truly LOVED her. "Nobody is too filled with well-deserved shame to be beyond His love" is Mary Magdalene's message in the bible, isn't it?

So for me, Donatello's version of her is closer to the archetypical role she plays in theology than the version of her that make her appear less pitiful.

Slightly related? Magdalene College at Oxford is pronounced "Maudlin College." Sill brits, screwing up English all the time.

This would be the biggest aid to voter fraud to date.

These receipts would be used like cash with democrats, paying the poor for each "correctly" voted ballot. If you are a union member, that receipt would be needed to avoid a beating and retain your job.

Mail-in ballots are just about as bad, which is why they must be outlawed.

Voting needs to go back to the Constitutional definition and occur on election day, in person and in private.

I did see a Van Gogh exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art some years back. The paintings were very nice ... but nothing made me have any sort of strong emotional response. Nice paintings, but nothing that I would go out of my way for again.

-------------

I was sort of unimpressed with the Sistene Chapel. I think I had built it up so much in my mind that it was kind of a let down for me. If Italy survives, I hope to go back there and look at it again. I think next time I'll better appreciate it.

The other infuriating thing - how these jackholes will be "sainted" by the lefty progs who just finished telling everyone who could hear about how "utterly disgusting it was for Chris Christie to block lanes on the GWB - how utterly, utterly horrible."

Old and Busted: Blocking lanes on the GWB is utterly horrible and akin to Hitler and anyone who does it should be arrested and never, ever be president.

New and Cool: Blocking lanes on the GWB in order to make sure foreign nationals here, breaking the law, get all the rights of citizens, including the right to take their jobs, vote and take their tax money - the ultimate in American democracy!

Whatever the intentions or motivations of the artist are, all that exists is the work. It's what we take out of the interaction with it that provides the artistic experience.

190 Curt Schilling asks CNN's Jake Tapper why Jews back Democrats And then of course was criticized, even though it is a damned good question.

It is a good question and the answer is relatively simple and straightforward:

Jews felt indebted to the Democrat Party for the initial UN vote for Israel.

The second, and more important, is because the GOP was the WASP party and the WASPs hated the Jews. Hated them with a vengeance. The Jews' biggest problem, as they were making money and moving up in society, was that the WASPs would restrict them from everything that was "cool" and the Jews really couldn't stand that. For example, this is why Central Park West was developed - Jews were not allowed into restricted buildings on 5th Avenue so they built Central Park West to be the Jewish 5th Avenue. This is how all of the investment banks started - Jews were not allowed in J.P. Morgan and the WASP banks so they built their own.

It was this serious problem with the rich WASPs that really cemented Jews with the Dems. Of course, the joke is that the rich WASPs are now dems, too!

The third factor is that Jews have always leaned left. It's a Jewish thing and has to do with Jewish guilt as the main control mechanism - any society that uses guilt as a control mechanism (i.e. any individualistic society) generates self-haters among the weak and damaged personalities. This is true for the US and truer for Jews, because jews use the guilt mechanism more than the standard Western society.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 26, 2016 10:43 AM (39g3+)

Not 100 years ago. There were signs at the Merion Cricket Club that said "No dogs, no Jews" up until the 60s. The Ivies heavily restricted Jews through the 50s - as much as they could, at least.

And I wasn't referencing Christians in general, but specifically WASPS - northeastern WASPs, really.

The distrust that Jews have had for Christians in general - which does exist - is an artifact of europe, where Jewish treatment was far, far worse than just not being allowed into the country clubs. That was pretty serious stuff that went on for over 1000 years and got pretty deeply ingrained in many. Things were pretty bad in Europe.

In Israel, many Jews understand that their best friends in the world are conservative American Christians Of course, Israeli Jews still have a pretty large, very left segment of society - as is true of all Jewish populations.

Although the so-called 'Gnostic Gospels' have received an extraordinary amount of good press in modern times, gnosticism in historical practice was generally abhorrent and loathsome. The word 'bugger', for example, comes from the word, 'Bolgar', which refers to a person from an area in modern-day Bulgeria where a gnostic sect was stamped out.

So yeah:there are very good reasons why gnostic heresies wererooted out.

Yes, though I'm not really sure where the whole "tikkun olam" thing came from. It isn't from the Torah. In the Torah, G-d gave Jews nothing more than dominion over the Promised Land and themselves (restricted by the Torah's commandments, of course). Jews are to serve as a model for others but not to have any power over anyone else. In fact, Jewish law only applies to Jews.

The idea of taking any of this to the larger world is a later development and I am quite ignorant as to its start. But, it is there now, to a good extent, and does have the effect you say.

Yes, the title is part of the work if the artist chose the title for the work.

Also, wouldn't it turn on which meaning of penitent is being used? Penitent as noun being a person seeking forgiveness (which presumes that the forgiveness was being sought for having opened oneself up to possession) or penitent as adjective describing a person who, now that the possession has ended, is expressing sorrow for what came before.

Each meaning still holds if you view these as before and after.

Older art tends to only still be around if it's decent, though. It has stood the test of time, while all the 'here is some trash I dug up in my backyard' will probably be long gone in 400 years. So by default it's usually better.

Also, my assumption is that Donatello actually knew enough about Mary Magdalene to have the story in mind when doing this. I would not be so sure of a modern artist wasn't actually carving a gorgon and calling it Mary Magdalene for kicks.

290 The third factor is that Jews have always leaned left.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair

I think misguided guilt is a factor among liberal non-Jewish whites as well. Only they do self-deprecation and agonize over their privilege.

I think Robert M. Price put it best. This is akin to survivor guilt. The sole survivor of the plane wreck feels "guilty" even though he did nothing wrong and feelings of guilt are totally unwarranted. In the same way, many in America look at the sh*tshow in third world countries and feel the same guilt, instead of perceiving that many of their problems are self inflicted and that any improvement to their situation must involve their conscious repudiation of what keeps them in that state. Of course, if they are incorrigible, then the only other way to achieve "equality" is the self immolation of the West.

I actually have a pic of him wearing a trashbag, holding a leafblower in one hand and an umbrella in the other, walking in the gutter blowing , um, rain? in the midstof a downpour.

I'll give him one thing, though - in my 'hood of over 400 houses, he was the only one that put out a sign. Trump.
That was back when I was all aboard the Cruz Ship. After his signs got torn up, stomped on ,or stolen, he stopped putting them out front, and has just the one now - inside the house in the picture window.

The holocaust, sure, but other than that its just been resentment and rudeness, not the kind of horrors you mentioned like being tortured to death for heresy. Look I'm a fan of Israel and a friend to Jews, I respect their millennias of positive influence and guidance to civilization and positive impact on culture.

But I'm about sick of Jews clinging to crap from long ago and blaming me for that. I'm about sick of Jews voting in the very same people who treat them like trash and want them destroyed. I'm about sick of being thought of as the enemy because of something that happened to someone's great-great-great-grandfather.

325 279 It's my understanding that absentee ballots are only counted if the race is competitive, and that counting the ballots might make an actual difference in the results. So if a candidate was ahead by 100,000 votes, and there were 70,000 absentee ballots left, they would not count those ballots.
Posted by: grammie winger, Go Cubs Go - HEY HEY! at October 26, 2016 11:06 AM (dFi94)
===

That's a myth that's been around for years. Absentee ballots are counted. They are checked into the possession of the Clerk responsible for elections in the precinct by the clerk's signature on the acknowledging receipt.Different states have different rules regarding when the ballots are counted. Some will be counted and entered into machines, etc. prior to the election day, some will be done on the day of the election and those ballots that are received on the day of the election itself might not get counted until after the election day. That is why there are normally 28 days to certify an election in a state from election day. If you have a very close election, the absentee ballots that are still waiting to be counted because they arrived close to deadline may make the difference, even if they don't, they are still opened and counted.

329 Here's the data for those who want to compare and contrast the early voting results with 2012, as reported on Nov 5th, 2012:

For Colorado: +2 Republicans

For Florida: +3 Democrats

For Iowa: +11 Democrats

For Nevada: +7 Democrats

For North Carolina: +16 Democrats

For Ohio: +6 Democrats

Here's a spreadsheet tabulating results, but I don't know how often it's updated:

http://tinyurl.com/zz5xpg9

Finally, the early numbers now don't mean much because only a fraction of the early voting has been tallied, we won't know who overperformed or underperformed until November.

I would agree. I think the "survivor guilt" analogy is a little too giving in most cases. To my mind, a lot of the problem is with the weak personalities that can't handle the guilt mechanism. They do experience constant, disembodied guilt (as you say) but not due to any understandable factor (such as being a survivor) but only because they are weak individuals who can't control their guilt mechanism and it overruns their minds - I usually compare it to children who see horror movies and can't stop their imaginations from scaring the shit out of them for weeks or months afterwards. The weak personalities who learn the basic guilt response become overwhelmed with illusory guilt (as we both say) and that leads to two main reactions:

1) to alleviate guilt one must atone - and that atonement takes on the look that you have described; to destroy ones own society.

2) to hate the person they hold responsible for making them feel all this guilt by teaching it to them - usually their fathers - and to lash out at everything and anything that reminds them of their fathers (i.e. all of their own society and anything they find familiar).

We agree on the mechanisms and reactions; I just think that the "survivor guilt" analogy is too much something that normal, well-adjusted individuals can fall prey to whereas the problem that individualistic societies have with their guilt control mechanisms are generally found with the weak and damaged personalities.

But, this problem is just the bad that we have to accept with the great good that is an individualistic society.

Jesse and Jesus: both names derived from Jesu

Jesus: was a carpenter

Jesus: had a beard

Jesus: consorted with thieves and prostitutes
Jesse: ditto

Jesus: betrayed by those he trusted, sealed in a tomb, walked free

Jesse: betrayed by those he trusted, sealed up in a basement meth lab, walked free

Jesus: atoned for his sins and the sins of others
Jesse: did his best, in his Jesse-like way, to atone for his sins and the sins of others

369 325 279 It's my understanding that absentee ballots are only counted if the race is competitive, and that counting the ballots might make an actual difference in the results. So if a candidate was ahead by 100,000 votes, and there were 70,000 absentee ballots left, they would not count those ballots.
Posted by: grammie winger, Go Cubs Go - HEY HEY! at October 26, 2016 11:06 AM (dFi94)
===

Posted by: Jen the original at October 26, 2016 11:23 AM (oDUj/)

Grammie, could you be thinking of the overseas military/US govt personnel ballots? Because those are often not counted, as they don't make it back to the US in a timely manner. In the 2000 election, there was a large number of military ballots that were dumped by the precincts that handled them, because they showed up a week or so after the election.

It probably had nothing to do with military polling for GWB in the high 80's. Nothing at all. Just an oversight.

373 The holocaust, sure, but other than that its just been resentment and rudeness, not the kind of horrors you mentioned like being tortured to death for heresy.

In Europe it has been far more than just resentment and rudeness. I mean, come on.

Look I'm a fan of Israel and a friend to Jews, I respect their millennias of positive influence and guidance to civilization and positive impact on culture.

But I'm about sick of Jews clinging to crap from long ago and blaming me for that.

Christopher, this isn't personal. And this isn't even about America. This is about Europe (and Russia, of course). If you think that Jews have suffered nothing but a little resenetment and rudeness from Europeans for the past couple of centuries then you really need to brush up on your history. Like I said, even in America Jews were greatly restricted (not by government, but by private organizations) up until the middle of the 20th century - and America has been the best nation to Jews in pretty much all of history.

I'm about sick of Jews voting in the very same people who treat them like trash and want them destroyed. I'm about sick of being thought of as the enemy because of something that happened to someone's great-great-great-grandfather.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 26, 2016 11:17 AM (39g3+)

I don't like how Jews tend to vote here, either. I find it very embarrassing. But, of course, the Jewish vote represents pretty much nothing. It is an insignificant vote in all but a handful of localities.

But as to the great-great-great grandfather stuff ... this is not a fantasy. It is Jewish history and it is more recent than you claim. And it is everywhere, too. I don't think you really understand this. The US is one of the very few bastions for Jews, but outside of few countries things are still not good. And things turn ugly for Jews very quickly in many places.

I'm just explaining to you my thoughts on Jewish thinking and where it came from.

378 There is no USDA standard for "hunted" (wild-taken) venison. This meat must be from a domestic herd. They'd be asking for a world of CWD lawsuit hurt if they sold field-hunted venison. I question their ability to prepare it consistently, but...

Farmers in eastern Ohio would sure like to see market hunting come back.
"Conservation" types, the old school hunter ones, generally see the end of market hunting as the end of the extinction-level event that eastern game went through. State "natural resources" agencies were, mostly, formed by the pressure of sport hunters -- quite a long time ago.

Interesting development. I can see the Bambi protest lines already.

I don't care for either the painting or the sculpture of MM. But given the times I think Donatello's MM is very forward. 2 cents

430 Donatello was the renaissance man's renaissance man. He could paint. He could sculpt in marble. He could carve in wood, as in the Magdelene here. He could work in bronze. whatta guy.

433 Donatello's sculpture looks more like the evil gang leader from the Warriors than it does Magdelene.
