World Series Game 1 [BCochran]

So. This happened......

unnamed.jpg

That's right, sometime in the next week to 10 days, someone's curse is no more. To refresh your memory, it was 1948 the last time the Indians won the Series and 1908 for the Cubs.

How did we get here?

Well the Indians started with a beatdown and sweep of the Red Sox and then took only 1 extra game to crush the hopes and dreams of Blue Jays fans with a 4-1 series victory.

The Cubs took a bit more time to make their way to the Series, but not much. They followed a 3-1 series victory over the Giants with a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers.

The Indians have had excellent pitching so far, which is an amazing thing in and of itself. Starters Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco have both been out with injuries. Add to that the recent injury to starter Trevor Bauer and the production that the Indians have gotten out of their pitching staff (the bullpen has a 1.67 ERA in 30+ innings of work) is truly stunning. Good news for Indians fans, Bauer is slated to start in Game 2, or 3 depending on who you ask, and Salazar made the World Series roster, meaning that they must feel he has a pretty good chance to contribute.

The Cubs's pitching has been solid throughout the postseason, a sub 3.00 ERA and opponent batting avg of .228, but the Cubs nearly blew this opportunity because their bats went to sleep. The team that scored the 3rd most runs in baseball during the regular season went 20+ innings without scoring a run. Fortunately for the Cubs, and their fans, those bats woke back up in dramatic fashion and propelled them to the Series.

So what do we have in Game 1? Indians ace Corey Kluber will pair off against the Cubs' Jon Lester. This could be an epic pitching duel to start the Series. Kluber's postseason has him 2-1 with a 0.98 ERA and Lester is sporting a mark of 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA.

What to watch for tonight: Can the Cubs' lineup do to Kluber what it did to one of the best pitchers in baseball, Clayton Kershaw? If the Cubs start hot, I expect them to stay hot and take Game 1.

Ace has been kind enough to approve World Series posts prior to each game, so I'll see you folks again tomorrow evening. And a big thanks to MisHum for posting these.

It took roughly 170 games, but we're finally here.....

27 Abbott: Well Costello, I'm going to New York with you. You know Bucky Harris, the Yankee's manager, gave me a job as coach for as long as you're on the team.
Costello: Look Abbott, if you're the coach, you must know all the players.
Abbott: I certainly do.
Costello: Well you know I've never met the guys. So you'll have to tell me their names, and then I'll know who's playing on the team.
Abbott: Oh, I'll tell you their names, but you know it seems to me they give these ball players now-a-days very peculiar names.
Costello: You mean funny names?
Abbott: Strange names, pet names...like Dizzy Dean...
Costello: His brother Daffy.
Abbott: Daffy Dean...
Costello: And their French cousin.
Abbott: French?
Costello: Goofè.
Abbott: Goofè Dean. Well, let's see, we have on the bags, Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third...
Costello: That's what I want to find out.
Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third.
Costello: Are you the manager?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: You gonna be the coach too?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names?
Abbott: Well I should.
Costello: Well then who's on first?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: I mean the fellow's name.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy on first.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The first baseman.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy playing...
Abbott: Who is on first!
Costello: I'm asking YOU who's on first.
Abbott: That's the man's name.
Costello: That's who's name?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: Well go ahead and tell me.
Abbott: That's it.
Costello: That's who?
Abbott: Yes.
PAUSE
Costello: Look, you gotta first baseman?
Abbott: Certainly.
Costello: Who's playing first?
Abbott: That's right.
Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money?
Abbott: Every dollar of it.
Costello: All I'm trying to find out is the fellow's name on first base.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy that gets...
Abbott: That's it.
Costello: Who gets the money...
Abbott: He does, every dollar. Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.
Costello: Who's wife?
Abbott: Yes.
PAUSE
Abbott: What's wrong with that?
Costello: Look, all I wanna know is when you sign up the first baseman, how does he sign his name?
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: How does he sign...
Abbott: That's how he signs it.
Costello: Who?
Abbott: Yes.
PAUSE
Costello: All I'm trying to find out is what's the guy's name on first base.
Abbott: No. What is on second base.
Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second.
Abbott: Who's on first.
Costello: One base at a time!
Abbott: Well, don't change the players around.
Costello: I'm not changing nobody!
Abbott: Take it easy, buddy.
Costello: I'm only asking you, who's the guy on first base?
Abbott: That's right.
Costello: Ok.
Abbott: All right.
PAUSE
Costello: What's the guy's name on first base?
Abbott: No. What is on second.
Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second.
Abbott: Who's on first.
Costello: I don't know.
Abbott: He's on third, we're not talking about him.
Costello: Now how did I get on third base?
Abbott: Why you mentioned his name.
Costello: If I mentioned the third baseman's name, who did I say is playing third?
Abbott: No. Who's playing first.
Costello: What's on first?
Abbott: What's on second.
Costello: I don't know.
Abbott: He's on third.
Costello: There I go, back on third again!
PAUSE
Costello: Would you just stay on third base and don't go off it.
Abbott: All right, what do you want to know?
Costello: Now who's playing third base?
Abbott: Why do you insist on putting Who on third base?
Costello: What am I putting on third.
Abbott: No. What is on second.
Costello: You don't want who on second?
Abbott: Who is on first.
Costello: I don't know.
Abbott Costello Together:Third base!
PAUSE
Costello: Look, you gotta outfield?
Abbott: Sure.
Costello: The left fielder's name?
Abbott: Why.
Costello: I just thought I'd ask you.
Abbott: Well, I just thought I'd tell ya.
Costello: Then tell me who's playing left field.
Abbott: Who's playing first.
Costello: I'm not... stay out of the infield! I want to know what's the guy's name in left field?
Abbott: No, What is on second.
Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second.
Abbott: Who's on first!
Costello: I don't know.
Abbott Costello Together: Third base!
PAUSE
Costello: The left fielder's name?
Abbott: Why.
Costello: Because!
Abbott: Oh, he's centerfield.
PAUSE
Costello: Look, You gotta pitcher on this team?
Abbott: Sure.
Costello: The pitcher's name?
Abbott: Tomorrow.
Costello: You don't want to tell me today?
Abbott: I'm telling you now.
Costello: Then go ahead.
Abbott: Tomorrow!
Costello: What time?
Abbott: What time what?
Costello: What time tomorrow are you gonna tell me who's pitching?
Abbott: Now listen. Who is not pitching.
Costello: I'll break your arm, you say who's on first! I want to know what's the pitcher's name?
Abbott: What's on second.
Costello: I don't know.
Abbott Costello Together: Third base!
PAUSE
Costello: Gotta a catcher?
Abbott: Certainly.
Costello: The catcher's name?
Abbott: Today.
Costello: Today, and tomorrow's pitching.
Abbott: Now you've got it.
Costello: All we got is a couple of days on the team.
PAUSE
Costello: You know I'm a catcher too.
Abbott: So they tell me.
Costello: I get behind the plate to do some fancy catching, Tomorrow's pitching on my team and a heavy hitter gets up. Now the heavy hitter bunts the ball. When he bunts the ball, me, being a good catcher, I'm gonna throw the guy out at first base. So I pick up the ball and throw it to who?
Abbott: Now that's the first thing you've said right.
Costello: I don't even know what I'm talking about!
PAUSE
Abbott: That's all you have to do.
Costello: Is to throw the ball to first base.
Abbott: Yes!
Costello: Now who's got it?
Abbott: Naturally.
PAUSE
Costello: Look, if I throw the ball to first base, somebody's gotta get it. Now who has it?
Abbott: Naturally.
Costello: Who?
Abbott: Naturally.
Costello: Naturally?
Abbott: Naturally.
Costello: So I pick up the ball and I throw it to Naturally.
Abbott: No you don't, you throw the ball to Who.
Costello: Naturally.
Abbott: That's different.
Costello: That's what I said.
Abbott: You're not saying it...
Costello: I throw the ball to Naturally.
Abbott: You throw it to Who.
Costello: Naturally.
Abbott: That's it.
Costello: That's what I said!
Abbott: You ask me.
Costello: I throw the ball to who?
Abbott: Naturally.
Costello: Now you ask me.
Abbott: You throw the ball to Who?
Costello: Naturally.
Abbott: That's it.
Costello: Same as you! Same as YOU! I throw the ball to who. Whoever it is drops the ball and the guy runs to second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to What. What throws it to I Don't Know. I Don't Know throws it back to Tomorrow, Triple play. Another guy gets up and hits a long fly ball to Because. Why? I don't know! He's on third and I don't give a darn!
Abbott: What?
Costello: I said I don't give a darn!
Abbott: Oh, that's our shortstop.

31 My first Tribe game was 1963...

Tribe hit back to back to back to back homers.

Also saw a guy get his hand layed open by a foul ball that was scaled back. He tried to bare hand catch the damn thing - very bloody.

I was eight.

The sight of that glorious green field revealing itself as you walked up the ramp was truly a life altering moment for an eight year old.

The smell of the stale beer and cigars - what a moment.

And that's when I fell in love with baseball and the Tribe. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I don't think it's the league switch that killed the Astros (who, btw, are pretty good now - they made the playoffs in 2015, after all). You want a team the MLB screwed over, it's the Expos/Nats - the best team during the strike year.

I recognized him and said "Thank you, Craig" and he gave me a big smile.

You need to steal at a good rate - the less runs you score, the higher percentage you need to steal for it to be 'worth it.'

Of course, one steal can change a series sometimes - Dave Roberts, anybody?

204 I'm happy both these teams are in the 2016 WS.

But: There can be only one.

1) Seeing that the entire Cubs' identity is so bound up in the Curse of Murphy the Goat, they and their fans would be adrift if they actually won. In comparison, the Indians' identity is not nearly as colorfully entrenched with disappointments.

2) Barky, TFG that he is, declared he is for the Cubs.

For these purely objective reasons I must switch from being a Temporary Cubs fan, to one who roots for the Indians.

I do hope at least 3 games go into extra innings, one game is delayed or played in the rain, and the series sees the 7th game, in the bottom of the 9th, 3 men on, full count, 5 foul balls in a row, and then... something memorable.

212 It is "The Yips", Donna. There have been myriad catchers that couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher for some reason.

It is a mental disorder.

If you are speaking generally about pitchers throwing to first, it is just an entirely different motion than the ritual of loading for the pitch.

Mostly psychological. For 100+ times a game you throw more or less as hard as you can at a target 60ft away. Then you have to turn and throw to a target a lot closer and you can't just laser it over there. It gets in some guys' head. Which is why you practice it. To get comfortable with it.

When I was in high school we got knocked out of a regional finals playoff game because our pitcher couldn't make the throw. I swore right there in the dugout that that wouldn't be me. So I practiced it in high school. And I continued to practice it all through college.

Actually, no. You have to be the best in your division. Which is 5 teams. Then you have to be the best in the Divisional Round. 5+1+6. Then best in the LCS. 6+1+7. Then the WS. 7+1=8.

You don't need to beat every team in your league and you certainly don't need to beat every team in the other league. Win your division to get in. Then beat 3 specific teams in the playoffs.

(I'm of course ignoring the play in game.)

So really, you need to be better than 8 specific teams.

Second pitch I start my swing during his windup. I foul it off but am about a day late.

Hmm. Okay.
2nd pitch. About a third into my swing I hear the ball hit the catchers mitt.
Third pitch. Outside third of the plate. I start my swing and pow!
Damn near broke my ankles trying to follow the break.

Think I'll try to lay one down next time.

Posted by: broseidon king of the brocean at October 25, 2016 09:07 PM (kumBu)

Reminds of when years ago we had a quiet black kid on my Dixie Youth minor league team (9 and 10 year olds). The way we worked it was that every year there would be "tryouts", which really amounted to a way to evaluate kids for the draft...every kid was going to end up on a team, but it wasn't all luck of the draw for the coaches, of which my Dad was one (the coaches' kids were of course off limits for drafting by other teams). So here's this quiet kid named Evans Sturdivant that all the coaches were ignoring. No one knew squat about him, and he'd never played before. The conclusion was that he'd be a late draft pick and would end up standing around in the outfield. My Dad, however, noticed how hard and far Evans could fling the ball...from deep center to home plate. So Dad drafts him and turns him into the most feared pitcher in the league for two years. Ten years old and he was throwing in the low 60s. Dad would call the pitches from the dugout. No signs, just yelling "Ease it back!" when he wanted him to drop the velocity or "Now, fireball, Evans!" when he wanted him to bring the heat. A few years later his family moved away...I have no idea what ever happened to him.

As did the Royals. People think SABRmetrics is about walks, but it's just about getting the most value out of a roster - defense and speed were undervalued skills during the HR boom of the late 90's/00's and the 'OBP era.' They won't be undervalued for long if teams with good defense and speed keep winning it all.

363 Simply that you have to be the best of 15 to win a pennant vs best of 30 to win the WS. But notice the media is so stupid they keep highlighting the 108 year drought as the bigger story.

Posted by: scofflaw_x at October 25, 2016 09:02 PM (y9ZJX)

Actually, no. You have to be the best in your division. Which is 5 teams. Then you have to be the best in the Divisional Round. 5+1+6. Then best in the LCS. 6+1+7. Then the WS. 7+1=8.

You don't need to beat every team in your league and you certainly don't need to beat every team in the other league. Win your division to get in. Then beat 3 specific teams in the playoffs.

(I'm of course ignoring the play in game.)

So really, you need to be better than 8 specific teams.
---

You're way over thinking it. It was a simple matter of statistics. Coming into the season all things equal you have a 1:15 chance of winning a pennant and 1:30 chance of winning the WS.

So statistically, as I said in my original post which you for some reason excluded, it is more of a statistical anomaly to not win a pennant in 70 years than it is to not win a WS in 108 years.

All that stuff you wrote is pointless.

Again, you said you had to be the best of 15 to win a pennant and the best of 30 to win the Series. That's incorrect. You do not have to beat every team in your league for a pennant and you do not have to beat all 30 to win a Series. Nobody is worse than that big domed, hair plugged, cheesy announcer voiced, doofus. Nobody. Costas is a liberal turd. I'd still rather listen to him call a sporting event than Joe Buck.

I got curious and ran a quick search, looks like he moved back to my hometown and was working for PictSweet at some point. Dad had another project guy that's now (last time I checked) a city councilman in Memphis. He came by the house about ten years ago to thank my Dad for teaching him that he had to work hard and have self-discipline to get ahead in the world, that nothing worthwhile was going to be just given to him.

Of course, Dad told me about the visit and then winked and asked where he went wrong with me.

But yeah, he was just a stereotypical grumpy old player that offered no insight - I'm okay with a grumpy vet if he at least gives you some good analysis of what it's like to go through the grind, to be in a clubhouse, to sweat under the lights. Posted by: broseidon king of the brocean at October 25, 2016 10:13 PM (kumBu)

399 372 You're way over thinking it.

Posted by: scofflaw_x at October 25, 2016 09:52 PM (y9ZJX)

Again, you said you had to be the best of 15 to win a pennant and the best of 30 to win the Series. That's incorrect. You do not have to beat every team in your league for a pennant and you do not have to beat all 30 to win a Series. You have to be the best in your division and then win three series against three teams.

But thanks for playing.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - GOLD--BERG! GOLD--BERG! a

----

OK let's do it your way. I said you had to be the best of 15 to win the pennant which is what the NLCS winner is and best of 30 to win the WS. No where did I say you had to beat all the other teams nor did I say you have to have a better record than all the other teams.

Statistics is clearly not your strong suit, nor is following a simple line of thinking. For the third time: going into a season, all things equal any one team is a 1:15 chance of winning a pennant and a 1:30 chance of winning the WS. Just because the playoff format doesn't include all teams doesn't mean GOING INTO THE SEASON you don't include all teams in the probabilities especially if you are looking at the probabilities of winning over 70 and a 108 year time horizons.

Jeez. I get it, you don't have to play and beat every team once you get into the playoffs but that is not the probability of winning at the start of a season and not the probability of an event over a 70 or 108 year duration.

Oh it's def not an error, just the wrong play imo. He got caught between competing responsibilities. I would say acting as cut off for a throw to the plate always outweighs other responsibilities/concerns.

Yeah, Mo got K's, also a lot of weak contact with that cutter. Miller has a better fastball, but Mo did have pitches besides the cutter - the cutter was just his go-to, and for good reason. (Remember, he was a starter at first, so he had a starter's array of pitches)

512 With all the Joe Buck hate going on I would be remiss not to mention an app called BatCrack. It allows you to sync local radio to the TV broadcast. You simply need an older laptop - one with audio in/out - and an AM radio. The radio output goes into the laptop and out to speakers.

In SF the radio was about 20 seconds ahead of the TV broadcast but the app lets you buffer the radio audio and sync it up. Worked beautifully and I got to listen to the local SF broadcasters rather than the Fox turds.

(Even when he wasn't hitting, Perez is a fantastic pitch framer, great at blocking balls in the dirt, and obviously works very well with the pitching staff)

640 Lindor might just be the best all-around player the Indians have had since...I don't know, Lou Boudreau? Larry Doby?

Carlos Baerga had a few good years there. Then he fell off the map.

Was he standing on Guam ?

Posted by: JT at October 26, 2016 04:05 AM (GdBvh)

641 One thing the 1908 Cubs and 1948 Indians have in common is that they had to win a tie-breaker. The 1948 Indians ended in a tie with the Red Sox, and had a one-game playoff (as the Sox had to play in 1978 - Buckie Dent - also both were part of a longtime curse.)

The Cubs was not strictly a play-off, but a makeup for the incomplete Merkle game - still part of the 154 game season.

Also, both teams won 3-team races, involving the 1908 Pirates and 1948 Yankees, both eliminated at the wire (and both winning it all the next year.)
