The Dangerous Logic Of Wooing
Ernesto Neto

From our very own Bluebell!

Last year, my son and I visited the Hirshhorn Museum because my son had a paper to write and I'm always up for a visit to a museum. In our wanderings we came upon this.

It took up an entire very large room, and it's every bit as crazy as you would think. We had a grand time walking around it, taking pictures and sending them out to my husband and the other kids.

One of the other exhibits was a Yoko Ono one -- oh yes -- which consisted of a monitor streaming a feed from a video camera mounted on the roof of the museum, pointing upwards at the sky. Which means, of course, you just see clouds, or whatever. It was ridiculous. As are all the other works of Yoko.

One last thing about this art piece: as my son and I were walking into the room where it was, having already glimpsed the gist of it, we passed a middle-aged, well-dressed woman walking out. Oh great, I thought, some snooty lobbyist or something taking in a little culture on her early lunch hour. She probably sees all kinds of wonderful meanings in this. She caught our eyes, smiled broadly and said, "It's udderly ridiculous."

29 From last thread:

Does anyone know anything about recovering lost gmail messages, or how a message could vanish from an inbox?

I
had a long running email to myself with political links I find at work,
in order to bookmark them on my home computer. (Never got out of the
habit of researching from grad school.)

Originally it was just
for global warming, hence the name of the email, global warming links,
but had grown to include everything interesting and horrifying from
around the political web.

Now that email chain is gone. I never
deleted it. It's not in my trash, spam, or filters. I checked archives and searched all mail. Anyone have any
ideas? How paranoid is it to think google made it vanish themselves?

Wow shit got really personal really fast. Maybe we should talk about Trump for a little while and really get Ace's attention.

Loads of people don't like Modern Art. It doesn't make them lowbrows or dummies, it just means they don't like modern art. But most of them don't start conversations on the internet about how stupid modern art is, and, as I said, I don't understand the people who do. Clearly, makes me an asshole.

When I hear people talk about how awful Country Music or Rap is I think to myself well you haven't heard a whole lot of either, because there are plenty of examples of truly excellent music out of both genres, and I've never met a musician who talks that way about any form of music. Musicians have their ears open and can hear interesting things in music all the time. Same is true of visual art.

135 "Alienation" and how to achieve it is a sick fascination of stage directors. I could never understand why that was always the focus at a very high conceptual level.

Of course, in order to get there they have to teach you how to actually be a good actor. But they usher the little bolsheviks along - "don't stop here! we must seek to achieve more! your art needs to change the world! never forget your education is going somewhere. That's what art is!"

When in reality mastering a craft is learning to do it properly over and over again, not to apply it to some greater scheme, which is the aim of all haute art now: to be a cog in the engine of social justice.

It is a gaining idea. There must not be a focus on gaining ideas. Simply to perform is enough.

I used to go by major major major major from Catch 22, which suited me, but then for no good reason at all I decided to start making up stupid hollywood action hero names, the stupider the better, for fun. If people just want to bang on me for a little while because of something I've said, bang away. If there is some guidance about commenting handles, I'm all ears.

It seems to me that we had a minor disagreement about the quality of modern art, people are putting a lot of tone and words in my mouth that I did not say, and we could all VERY EASILY de-escalate this considerably, which I hope we will. That's not an analogous example. Book reviews don't care about how hard the book was to write, they just address how much the reader liked the book.

172 The single most difficult thing for me when I was an art student was to "talk the talk" regarding the critique of someone else's work. Nor could I ever explain in artpseak why I created what I did. I was always deducted points for not participating, but I honestly could not do it. I would focus on things like materials used, brush strokes, colors, light and shade, but when it came to "what is you visceral reaction to the piece, how does it make you feel?" I merely shrugged and would say, "I like it. Clearly they spent a lot of time on it."

Despite being an artist, I absolutely do not get the art world.

234 So here's a fun little GAINEZZZ update. I have been pretty disciplined about staying low carb. Most of my carbs come wrapped up in the little amounts found in salad spinach and dairy products so I am probably eating somewhere in the neighborhood of 10g of carbs a day and all of that is incidental. No bread, cereals, beer, pasta, etc.

Well, last night I was hosed and didn't feel like fixing anything to eat. My wife ordered Chinese for herself and the kids. In a moment of utter laziness I ate a little bowl of chicken fried rice. Within an hour I was on the verge of puking, which I thankfully did not do. This morning resulted in a toilet bowl full of regret.

I used to eat Chinese pretty regularly. For a while we were hitting it up at least once a week. I am guessing that over the last couple months my body has adjusted and just doesn't process that stuff the way it used to. I guess if my body is rejecting that stuff maybe that just makes it easier to never go back to the old ways.

282 An overzealous cleaner in Germany has ruined a piece of modern art worth £690,000 after mistaking it for an eyesore that needed a good scrub.

The sculpture by the German artist Martin Kippenberger, widely regarded as one of the most talented artists of his generation until his death in 1997, had been on loan to the Ostwall Museum in Dortmund when it fell prey to the cleaner's scouring pad.

The work, called When It Starts Dripping From the Ceiling (Wenn's anfängt durch die Decke zu tropfen), comprised a rubber trough placed underneath a rickety wooden tower made from slats. Inside the trough, Kippenberger had spread a layer of paint representing dried rainwater. He thought it was art: the cleaner saw it as a challenge, and set about making the bucket look like new.

Posted by: RoyalOil at October 25, 2016 10:38 AM (e2Rx3)

As I understand it, the early West/East split of the Indo-European language is the Centum (pronounced KENTUM) and Satem split, where the Western groups like Latin used the hard K sound. However that sound assibilated to a soft S as time went by. (That word means "hundred")

So, yes, Latin initially had a hard K sound, but it changed in later eras, which is one of the reasons that English, French and Spanish have both a hard and soft C but only one letter for both.

--

There is a difference between classical (academic) latin and ecclesiastical (R.C. church) latin. The latter permits soft "c" sounds. There is some debate (I think) over which one is more historically correct. Historical linguistics can trace back lots of language changes based upon vowel shifts (for example), while the ecclesiastical side has the benefit of being the only ones to continually "use" the language since Roman times.

Another point of dispute is the Latin "v" sound. Academic latin would say that this should be pronounced as we would a "w" today, which is why historically, latin added the "w" to its alphabet to pronounce tribal german names that had no analog in the roman tongue. I've heard this view challenged by linguists skilled in historic teutonic languages, who argue that the old german "w" was originally two "u"s (that's why we call it a double-u), and that the sound it originally represented is the same "w" sound we use today in modern english. These folks say that German had a sound shift, turning their "w" into more of an english "v" sound, over time. If they are right, that means that the "w" adopted by the ancient romans would be similar to the "w" sound that we use today, and the academic pronunciation of the latin "v" can be called into question.

Posted by: RondinellaMamma at October 25, 2016 10:14 AM (oQQwD)

Sure, but that just means you like Caravaggio more than you like Rothko. Standing in front of an actual Rothko painting, not a print, is a very interesting experience too, albeit a very different one. Kenneth Nolan's works are also impressive to see in person. These two artists lead the list of people who paint like 2-year-olds.

Some people love Mozart and don't get Coltraine, or love Kind of Blue but hate Bitches Brew. It simply isn't a qualitative judgement of classical vs jazz or swing vs freeform. Lots of people who don't play might listen to Bitches Brew and go WTF IS THAT CRAP? But anyone who plays trumpet, or jazz, listens and learns, and hears a master at work.

To me, modern art is highly analogous to jazz. Some forms are more accessible to others, and some forms are more interested in theory and, pardon the loaded nature of the term, intellectual aspects of visual art. This has been true of every new movement in visual art throughout time - the impressionists said I don't care about visual representation I care about showing light. Modern artists often are exploring colors' relationships to each other or how we experience physical space or whatever fascinating/nonsensical abstraction. Some are excellent and some are ridiculous, like all art. And of course a decent amount of heroin always helps. But the Miles Davis who composed and played Bitches Brew is the same Miles Davis who composed and played Kind of Blue. The artists whose works of modern art are on display in museums are almost all capable of creating more accessible works, they just choose not to explore other things than visual representation in their art. Some of it is fascinating and some of it is bad.

One thing that IS different about Modern Art is that it's still new enough that we get to see all the bad examples. All the bad art from 1600 Italy is long gone. It's a bit like hearing modern pop music and pointing to the 70s when all the music was so much better but really it's just that no-one is still listening to all the bad music from the 70s.

Posted by: Chest Lockstrong, III at October 25, 2016 09:56 AM (gh3qK)

I like and appreciate modern art--what I consider the good stuff, anyway. But I also know when modern art is mocking and contemptuous, a big middle finger extended at the bourgoisie (and why is it those who make that stuff use terms like 'bourgoisie'?) Many times, people may not get the gist of a givenabstract piecebut they sure as hell know or sense when the artist holds them in contempt.People are being conditioned by hack artists to respond in a certain way and--unfortunately--that reponse extends to well-meaning pieces aiming at high ideals and concepts.

It's also true that most contemporary art is shit. Of course, that's been true throughout the ages. We only see those 400+-year-old paintings and drawings and sculptures hanging on museum walls or standing in the roundbecause people went to enormous lengths to preserve that which they thought was beautiful and true. For the most part, the crappy stuff ended up in the dustbin.

Because what is commonly called "modern art" is ridiculously over valued. It's not ridiculous because it is not art. It's ridiculous because it is unremarkable art, artificially raised to an unwarranted level.
Yes my 2 year can make art. Anybody can draw a simple picture, or some random shapes or colors that pleases them. And that's art. But that's art that ANYBODY can do. It's not particularly valuable or notable and has no place in a museum or an art auction. Can you paint a figure like like Da Vinci? Or create shading like Rembrandt? Or use color like Rockwell? Nope. I can't either. Few can. THAT is notable, museum worthy art, because not everybody can do it.I know how to play baseball. Lots and lots of people do. But I can't play baseball for the Yankees though. To me, art is supposed to invoke emotions or direct attention to something that possibly the viewee has not thought about, etc.

So in this case, as I look at the photo(seeing it in person might evoke a different emotion), to me it looks like dripping liquid that is suspended in time, right before it puddles on the floor.

I'm indifferent to it . In other words, it does nothing to elicit any kind of emotional reaction other than...a thought that more interesting art could have been put in that space.

And that doesn't make me a bad person, or someone who doesn't appreciate modern art, etc. It makes me an honest critic of it.

Probably so, as it is something felt in the mind and emotions. Some art touches me on a spiritual level as well, such as Michelangelo's David. Untrue statement. Mark Rothko, a 'modern' artist by any definition (although he absolutely hated being called an 'abstract' artist), was arguably one of the greatest paint-on-canvas technicians since Rubens. Matisse, one of the fathers of modernism, was extraordinarily technically competent. Braque, who originated Cubism along with Picasso, is another example of amazing technical competence.

Yes, there are contemporary artists who don't know shit from shinola and are aiming solely for shock value using questionable means and media. They've always been around and they've always been forgotten.

Yes, their 2 year old probably could (and so could their dog) but wouldn't need a grant to do it.

Art is using a medium to communicate with an audience.

Where much of modern "art" fails is that the audience has become a medium for the "artist" to communicate with themselves.

There's a more recent animated version my son watches (not the new ugly live/CGI-fest movies) that is actually quite good. Good writing, decent art, some very good voice characterizations. The last season's cliffhanger ended with Shredder choosing to stab Splinter to death instead of helping him stop a mutual, earth-threatening foe; as a result, with Splinter dead and the earth destroyed, the Turtles are rescued at the last moment by a robot from another dimension.

I know, cartoons, but despite it being the 3rd animated version of a show created to sell toys, the writing's well done enough to sell it. I guess what I'm saying is you won't want to open a vein if your kid starts watching it.

445 All the cool sniper rifles in Fallout 4 take .308 ammo. But it's kinda hard to find early on in the game when you have to scavenge for everything. And it's expensive to buy.

Thankfully now that I'm level 70ish and flush with caps, I can afford to just buy it, but it still isn't as common to find, like say .38 ammo is.

The creators of the game are very gun savvy and the fire arms they put in the game reflect that. So is this because .308 is rare in real life or something?

It's not "artificially raised," and I'm not sure "unwarranted" really applies as a valuation of the market and its assignment of worth. The art market is as rational (or irrational, depending on your perspective) as any other market. Trends come and go, tastemakers come into fashion and fade from popularity, etc. The Beanie Baby craze is replicated; the Kim Kardashians of the art world are worth what consumers say they are. Jeff Koons was absurd, then he was popular, then he was absurd again (and incredibly wealthy) again and again--he's not unlike any other productive contributor to the art world. Maybe "absurd" isn't useful in this context.

Divorcing the practical business of art from any aesthetic bias isn't easy, but it's probably useful and smart for an informed, objective appraisal of the business and the commodity traded therein.

That was my dream rifle when I got out of the navy. A dealer about 40 miles from where I lived where I did all my gun buisness had one and I lusted after it. Only problem, he wanted $500 for it which was a good deal. (They are going for over $1300 now at Gunbroker.com). But I was unemployed. After I got my job I was out of State and there was no "reciprocity" deal then. I guess I could have had one of my brothers buy it for me (illegal) but the next time I was there someone had broken into his warehouse where it was and cleaned him out. AND he had no insurance. He went out of buisness.

Harris County Texas (the one that surrounds Houston) set a record for the first day of early voting. In 2012 (the previous record) it was a tad over 47,000 in person on the first day. They clocked in at over 67,470 in person this year. Also a lot of people did the mail in ballots this year (over 61,500).

It was similar in my little county in Texas. The line was out the door on the first day of early voting. And from the hats signifying people were vets, I don't think many of those voters were casting ballots for Queen Gun Grabber.

Professor's model which accurately predicted last 5 elections predicts Trump win baed on the same model. I Googled his articles in 2012 to make sure he wasn't a quack, and sure enough he was getting cited for his Obama win prediction and fawned over for his brilliance on HuffPo.

Now that he's predicting a Trump win, not so much. His model is pretty simple, based partly on evaluating the tabulated data of the primary results in New Hamphire and South Carolina. Hillary underperformed badly while Trump overperformed.

The variance between polls is shocking and nearly unprecedented in scale.

Many Trumpsters are not early voting due to their lack of trust in the system and will directly vote to make sure it was counted, which can impact their early voting presence. I didn't mail my ballot in for this reason, instead I dropped it off in person. I do not trust these fuckers. The less hands it passes through, the better.

Well, take into a account the game takes place around 2077ish, which is 200 years after a nuclear exchange with China. So maybe in the imaginary timeline this kind of ammo fell out of favor in the interim. Not realistic. At all. :-) If you have a weak weapon and low levels it can take many shots to put a normal human person down, even with several head shots. With a powerful weapon at high levels you can take out a giant mutated monster in one head shot.

I got a 30-06 deer rifle last year and put it in the lead sled to sight in, but the scope rings were loose, so I spent a ton of time making adjustments that didn't help before I realized the problem. And then the cheap scope that came with the rifle broke (Remington 783 - good rifle, cheap optics), so I replaced it with a new nikon and some good rings, got it sighted in just right very quickly, and then decided to have some fun, so I took it out of the lead sled.

And cradled it very gently, just like I had done with it in the lead sled, pulled the trigger and I'm sure you know what happened next

30-06 is no joke! Pretty impressive to stand a .556 and a 30-06 round next to each other.

Michael Moore: "Trump's Election Will Be The Biggest Fuck You Ever Recorded In Human History"
===============================

Thanks for the link. It's a good read, because Michael Moore connected on that swing of the bat.

It reminds me of an opinion piece I read last week. My apologies to the guy who wrote it because I can't recall his name. One line made me laugh, and made others laugh when I repeated it :

"Donald Trump is the empty gin bottle thrown through the window."

"Glock vs 1911"

My 1911 will out shoot any glock. It shoots pretty good at long range (800 yards), but it's a Swiss 1911 long rifle.

517 Season two waits until its second episode before really going for TWD level horror. One of the new recruits reveals to his buddy how as a kid he came back to their slum digs to find the older boy he looked up to had killed himself. The older boy had been snatched off the streets almost and was forced to get an operation that would allow him to pilot mechs. But the operation failed, left him paralyzed, and he was dumped back in the streets as so much garbage.

523 Re: good and bad contemporary art, or rather architecture. The Milwaukee Art Museum, designed by Calatrava, was immediately loved and welcomed.

https://mam.org/info/architecture.php

The building, with it's soaring wings, is on the shore of Lake Michigan, directly parallel to Wisconsin Ave. downtown's main drag. It's striking to drive east on Wisconsin Ave. and see the Calatrava building at the end of it. Well, it would be striking if the view wasn't blocked by a huge, ugly, dated orange steel "sunburst" that partially blocks the view. It dates from the '70's and was OK then but now it does nothing but distract from the far more superior work behind it. Citizens have overwhelmingly asked that the orange thing be removed, but the city won't do it. Can't remove public art - it's sacred!

Maybe painting a confederate flag on it would do it.

I think actually Moore knows the truth and what's going on very well, but is a propagandist, so he preaches the party line in violation of what he knows to be true. My personal guns are Belgian Brownings and (Pre-64) Winchesters.

Though, as long as you get a Winchester with the Claw Foot Extractor, you will be good.

Really, a rifle can only be as accurate as the machining between the Barrel and the Action. If they aren't matched perfectly, the gun will never be truly accurate.

With most mass produced rifles, this is luck of the draw.

I expect so. If you grew up in absolute want and desperate for the smallest necessities, having them in abundance tends to make you nervous and hoard them. When my mom on very rare occasions goes to Arby's (the only fast food place she likes), she stores those packets of horsey sauce and arby's sauce in the refrigerator for months, even years. She doesn't steal handfulls because that would feel bad to her.

But to be honest, restaurants expect people to boost packets. That's why they give away 47 ketchup packets when you ask for more. They're cheap and considered expendable. When you empty the rack of tiny jam packages from the breakfast spot, they shrug and reload. Its like breaking dishes, an expense, but expected and written into their cost sheets.

595 I expect so.

597 549 ... Christopher has it right. There are many reasons for the original 1911 design but pinpoint, long range accuracy wasn't part of it.

I hate the look, balance and trigger on the Glock. But I shoot them better than the 1911. ARRRRGGGGHHHH!! Makes me crazy!! That's when I say screw it and get out my Blackhawk and K-Frame Smith revolvers. These new-fangled semi-auto handguns are just a passing fad.

Back in the days when cigarette companies gave away samples on the street (mid-70's as I recall), a friend's grandmother would go downtown with a big shopping bag and do nothing but walk around picking up smokes from the vendors. That was back when cigs were about 50 cents a pack here.

She was another one who would empty the creamers into her purse when she went to diners.
Embarrassed hell out of my friend.

614 551 Really, a rifle can only be as accurate as the machining between the Barrel and the Action. If they aren't matched perfectly, the gun will never be truly accurate.

With most mass produced rifles, this is luck of the draw.

Oh ok I see your point. FWIW it seems accurate enough. I need to be able to drop a deer (or, you know, whatever) inside 200 yards not 600, and I can hit a 6" steel plate from 200 yards all day long with this rifle. I like the trigger a lot but the bolt action is a little clunky, IMO. Honestly, I wanted a Chevy for this rifle. Its mission in life is to make meat, not win any contests, but like everyone else now I'd really prefer a custom rifle with expensive optics.

Posted by: mx4 at October 25, 2016 12:21 PM (gh3qK)

615 You can get a 700 that shoots well, but you need to look through a bunch or have it worked on.

With their production numbers, the law of averages dictates that some will actually come with decent machining.

For most hunting, they will group fine. But, once you start reaching out over 500 yards you need something that can drive tacks.

620 'In Nashville, a man with a knife leapt up on the stage and started coming toward me. The Seal grabbed him from behind by his belt loop and collar and slung him off the front of the stage to the cement floor below. Someone had to mop up the blood after the Seals took him away.'

However, Officer Don Aaron of Nashville Police Public Affairs Department said there is no record of such an incident involving Mr. Moore occurring in the area.

The filmmaker describes how in Fort Lauderdale, a man 'in a nice suit' saw him on the sidewalk and 'went crazy.'

Again Mr. Moore was saved because of the heroics of his ex-Navy Seal bodyguards:

'The man] took the lid off his hot, scalding coffee and threw it at my face. The Seal saw this happening but did not have the extra half-second needed to grab the guy, so he put his own face in front of mine and took the hit.'
The alleged assault was the most serious of them all. According to Mr. Moore, on this occasion the Seal needed medical treatment.

'The coffee burned his face so badly, we had to take him to the hospital (he had second-degree burns) - but not before the Seal took the man face down to the pavement, placing his knee painfully in the man's back, and putting him in cuffs,' the book states.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police Department there are no police records of this incident ever happening.

One Fort Lauderdale detective added that Mr. Moore's description of the incident read like 'a fantasy novel.'

My grandparents did that, folded them up and saved them for later. Scrimped and saved. Thought it was bizarre. But then when my mom put their family trust together, turns out all that scrimping and saving had turned them into millionaires. Quick check that will give you an idea of how well any gun will shoot, accurately.

DO NOT USE LIVE ROUNDS FOR THIS!

Coat the face of the bolt with a light film of grease.
Chamber a Dummy Round (in appropriate Caliber).
Carefully remove Round and check the face of the base of the Cartridge.
If less than 90% of the base has grease on it, the barrel is not anywhere near square to the action.

Anyway, a few years ago I moved with my family to an old family farm that has a couple of 1000 yard shots available and I'm dying to get him down here to show off, but that's a skill I don't think I have the time to develop that requires equipment I don't think I have the money to buy.
