As ever, Mark Steyn is spot on. "Migrant rights now trump children's rights."

Which is quite an amazing thing, considering we have been preached at for years that everything should be done "for the children".

Cops don't have an easy job. One bad apple spoils the barrel. Multiply that by 50 states, countless jurisdictions. I'm sure we have our own cop stories to share, some good, some bad, some indifferent.

Meet Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Miguel Garcia Jr. He seems like a good cop. I wonder if he played Smoke on The Water?

Since we are talking about human nature and food. Why not discuss human nature and naivete.

na·ive·té
ˌnīˌēv(əˈtā,nīˈēv(əˌtā/
noun
lack of experience, wisdom, or judgment.
"the administration's naiveté and inexperience in foreign policy"

innocence or unsophistication.
"they took advantage of his naiveté and deep pockets"
synonyms: innocence, ingenuousness, guilelessness, artlessness, unworldliness, trustfulness;

Talk about the lack of a business plan or any insight into human nature.

Do you have a mouse problem? Here is a solution for you if you detest poison and traps.

Are we fighting 5 wars? All 5 share one thing in common. Islam. The candidates, Congress and the Press are to blame for not telling the American public.

Being a member of the press means you never have to impartial. There have been no consequences for the press members caught in bed with the Clinton campaign.

We hate to say, "We told you so." But we did tell you so! And it should be brought up every damn chance a Conservative or a Republican has. The failures of the left have to be brought up time and time again.

We've prayed, begged and pleaded for them not to reproduce. Our prayers have been positively answered.

The cost of having children is deterring a growing number of couples from expanding the family unit
Vasectomies, once a source of shame, are now being celebrated openly by couples adamant about living childless lives
Instead of baby showers, couples now invite friends for 'car showers' or 'boat showers' in honor of the toys they'll buy with the money they save

We've all heard someone say at one time or another this isn't brain surgery. What it feels like to actually perform brain surgery.

.....While my assistant held the patient's head up from the neck, I explosively closed the clamp onto her skull. The noise from the metal gears made the students, nurses, and doctors in the operating room take pause and take notice.
That was the first of several hundred steps that needed to go smoothly, quickly, and perfectly.

So began my first time peeling down the scalp and opening the skull of a living human. Before getting to supple and delicate neurosurgical techniques, first I had to get past the formidable skull. The floor was covered with long brown hair that I had shaved from her head. The cold pins in her warm flesh were a reminder of how invasive things were going to get. Under anesthesia, she would feel nothing and remember nothing.

I, on the other hand, was completely sentient and completely in the moment -- both excited and afraid, a unique mix of emotions that I'm now used to but make every complex brain surgery a thrill to this day.

Hitler learns that Wikileaks released Democrat emails.

MLB has been in the news lately. In all the excitement of the Cubs & Indians heading onto the World Series we have forgotten to mention Randy Reeves. Who is Randy Reeves? He is the winner of the 20th Annual USPMGA Masters. Randy Reeves belongs to the the cutthroat world of professional mini-golfers.

Too young to retire? Too old to know anything else? Not so fast Scooter. There are good paying jobs that don't require a college degree.

High school is a difficult time for students. It doesn't help when your teacher is an idiotic jackass.

High school can be a difficult time as well because Mom cracks the whip. Strict Moms contribute to their daughters success. Well, Moms keep up the good work.

According to the study conducted on 15,500 teenage girls aged 13 and 14 between 2004 and 2010, this does not go on to say that a child of a nagging mother is much more obedient and will approve of every piece of advice she is given, but quite contrary, that a child will, on a somewhat subconscious level, remember mother's advice when it comes to making important decisions and do the right thing.

If you were stuck in this traffic jam I bet you didn't care. You were probably really mellow even if you didn't have any munchies.

It seems after this experience that polls are bunk. If my response rate is indicative of poll response a 600 person poll would require 12,000 calls.

74 I watched The Karate Kid 2 tonight, first time since, I really don't know, maybe 1989. I thought the movie was the bees' knees when I was, like, twelve. Now, er... not so much.

I'll give it this: it's a natural sequel to TKK, given where Daniel's character arc was headed. The kid needs to understand the roots of the life he has chosen.

But TKK2 retcons the first movie something fierce. Miyagi's old flame Yukie never married, we learn. Miyagi on his return didn't think to mention that he, on the other hand, did marry and in fact had a kid (they died; this is mentioned in TKK1).

The plot was contrived and episodic, overall. Aristotle would never have forgiven the Storm Of Unbelievable Coincidence (as MAD magazine mocked it at the time). And the screenwriting is lazy: it needed much more Japanese, it's not like the fanbase would have minded that.

----------------------

Elijah Woods is the everyman character - i.e. a more or less normal person whose life has just gone insane. Dirk Gently is being played by a guy named Samuel Barnett. The first episode aired last Saturday, and it's available on BBC America. Netflix partnered with BBC on it, and should have it in December.

It's odd. I think it's still too early to say whether or not it'll be good. But it's definitely odd.

Unfortunately, it's been too long since I read the books, so I can't say how it compares to them. There is a very quick reference to them in the episode, but imo someone who hasn't read the books won't be missing anything important.

82 I live in Ohio (Cleveland - go Tribe) and I've had a few strange polling phone calls lately from a Columbus area code. The first time, the very first question the caller asked was if I was somewhat likely to vote or not likely to vote and when I replied I was VERY likely to vote, he said, thank you, that ends our survey and hung up. The next call again came from Columbus and they had the exact same intro but before they asked about the voting, I asked if this was a political survey, and they immediately hung up. These calls made me think that maybe the pollsters really don't want the input of engaged, likely voters. Only 2 data points from one 'ette, but still.

125 82 I live in Ohio (Cleveland - go Tribe) and I've had a few strange polling phone calls lately from a Columbus area code.
Posted by: Obamaisacommunist at October 25, 2016 10:58 PM (FSETn)

Probably Democrats doing the calls.

If your state has party membership registration, then the Dems are probably trying to see how engaged the Republicans are in voting. If you were wavering on voting, then they may try a push poll on you to try to vote for Gam Gam Clinton.

Could also be a polling outfit trying to line up future poll participants.

I've got to say, this year has been nice in Virginia not having 4-5 calls a night for a poll or GOTV call. Since 2008 it has been horrendous since we have at least one election a year.

145 Oh, since the Downfall video was mentioned, perfect excuse to reprise my stupid trivia nitpick.

The video (and all of us using its catchphrases) should actually say "Wenck will come". Steiner was requested to mount a "rescue" operation for the govt. quarter in Berlin but lacked the resources to even start.

Wenck tried (from a different direction), and couldn't break through (he actually got pushed back), but he actually did try and it took some time for him to realize he couldn't make it.

So - "Wenck will come". Interesting thing, Wenck ended up being one of several commanders who essentially opened up corridors for refugees and Wehrmacht units wisely trying to get to the American/British areas to the west and away from the tender mercies of the Red Army.

Haven't heard/read him in ages, but caught 2 obnoxious minutes on the radio yesterday. He and some other Beltway lightweight were having an earnest discussion about whether Trump would drag down other GOP, or whether voters would consciously support down-ticket GOP as a "check" on Her Heinous.

I always found it amusing that he and other kids were treated as if they brought much wisdom or gravitas to any discussion, when they are unlikely to, and of course don't. Only actual quote I remember from a ways back was a classic that pretty much summed up his intellectual and political and common sense assets: "I'm not one to pound the table over illegal immigration".

295 Speaking of Genius Award, I saw one today. Wish, I wish, I wish I had a Go-Pro in the truck.

I'm driving down a two-lane highway towards Calgary, and come up behind another Suburban going about 55, instead of the permitted 60. Prepared to pass, and then saw a white Dodge pickup with camper on it enter the highway about a half mile ahead. Back and forth he went, evidently trying to turn around in a place with no approach. I decided not to try to pass, since this dude would be in the oncoming lane.

He gets turned around, into the oncoming lane, and accelerates. Ker-plop! The camper unit slides out of the truck bed and drops onto the pavement, and stands upright. An empty gravel hauler coming at him behind manages to get stopped in time to avoid hitting the camper. Dude in the Suburban ahead of me pulls over to render assistance. I had a trailer on, and it would just get in the way (narrow shoulders on this road), so I just breezed on through, laughing my ass off.

Passing close by the scene, I see the "camper" is actually one of those pickup-mounted "mobile treatment centers" typically used as industrial ambulances at drilling and construction sites. Dude must not have had it secured in the truck bed at all.

All it needed was Yakety Sax as a soundtrack.

298 BTW, out of boredom I dug into the early voting results for 2012 that was reported Nov 5th. It gives a good baseline for how we're faring in comparison:

For Colorado: +2 Republicans

For Florida: +3 Democrats

For Iowa: +11 Democrats

For Nevada: +7 Democrats

For North Carolina: +16 Democrats

For Ohio: +6 Democrats

So if the Republican turnout closed the gap since then for all of these states (save Colorado) it's a good sign.

Currently North Carolina has a 19 point GOP gap, but only 24% have returned ballots (presuming a similar turn out of 2.7 million) and this gap is only a 3 point difference that will definitely change. Another thing to note: 25% of the returned NC ballots were from African Americans.

Have no clue about that, but I do find it interesting that the early voting tally is slightly oversampling blacks by 2% (based on their registration) so far.

Florida's tally is encouraging while the rest is a shit sandwich, but it's REALLY early days. We're not going to know how early voting pattern actually changed since 2012 until Nov 5th for a truly accurate comparison.

333 @242 The trailers on YouTube don't seem to reference deals with demons to promote record contracts, or Thor/lost jet pilots/Coca Cola machines, so they may be building their own episodes.

Is it set in the US?
------------------

It's set in Seattle. Dirk's noticeably the only character (so far) with a British accent.

And the books take place before the series. There's a quick mention of a case involving a sofa, and another case where Dirk met Thor. Based on the state of things at the end of the first episode, I suspect that the entire first season is going to be built around solving the events introduced in episode one. Apparently Netflix will have the series up in December. That would only provide enough time for several episodes to air on BBC beforehand, which suggests a short British-style season instead of the longer US style.

337 Well Bander, "pretty bad about this stuff", if that means election integrity, brings to mind CA (and other states where lack of election integrity is voluntary, as opposed to compelled by the VRA or court orders - yes, I said compelled by the VRA).

Lessee. Lack of verification of voter indentity and eligibility would instantly sound the loud buzzer and, for example, result in an election in another country receiving US or UN assistance to lose that assistance, or to be denied certification.

Last time I voted, after stating my name and receiving a ballot I asked the volunteers - how do you know it's me? Puzzled looks. I explained the issue. Concerned looks. One light went one, as one person said "we could ask for ID".

"Voting rights" are massively, systematically violated in several key states. In places like NC which have had courts strike down voter ID requirements, overall, "voting rights" are much worse off now than they were before the VRA. There's just no particular color to the injury - when an election's integrity is vitiated, all voters lose their rights.

352 Yep Bander, I was (clumsily) pivoting to try and make the point that in fact "voter rights" are now systematically violated in many large states, anywhere that lacks integrity in their process.

Race-based violations were odious and eliminated long ago. And, absurdly and illogically, such historical curiosities are cited to destroy the integrity of the entire process today (no IDs). That's in VRA states.

In degraded crapholes like CA, there is a *voluntary* destruction of election integrity (courts haven't blocked common sense measures, they just haven't been implemented).

Certainly a sign of insufficient progressive zeal on my part, but I ponder the wrongs of the distant past, long corrected, and yawn. Yet I survey the massive and indefensible destruction of the process today, and am disgusted and furious.

--------------------

Here in Los Angeles, they *finally* stopped sending me voter instruction packets and jury summonses (pulled from the voter rolls) for a woman who used to live in my apartment.

Of course, if California were to actually take action to clean up the rolls (not likely, but occasionally outbursts of common sense happen here), the Federal Justice Department would probably take the state to court to prevent it, and the state AG would decline to defend the state in court, causing an automatic win for the Feds.

Posted by: junior at October 26, 2016 01:19 AM (d/pkP)

358 And OldBlue brings up a point I've made in my own boring way here before.

I've worked on international election assistance and monitoring operations. Many US states would not pass muster by the standards used, by the US and OECD and UN, for helping and certifying elections around the world. Not even close.

This fact is 100% attributable to the VRA (as malevolently applied by lawless courts), the actions of laughably termed "civil rights" groups, and one major political party (only one guess).

But don't be confused - this is nothing to worry about. Use of the word "rigged", however, is a proximate threat to the constitutional order.

Current plan is to make it run and drive as-is. Not sure of the displacement. I will try to get the number off the block and decode it. Engine runs rough, needs a tune-up. Throttle linkage is screwy. Hoses and wiring poorly done. Transmission won't go into Park, which could be an artifact of trying to shift a TH350 with the Powershift shifter. Radius rods and rear sway bar are AWOL.

So fix the obvious stuff. Make it start, stop, and steer. If the engine is toast, well, I could set him up with a regular 289 and Flightomatic. No R-series engines in inventory.

Panhard rods are the diagonal locators, are they not? This one is missing the so-called "traction bars". I think the rear axle got swapped, and the replacement did not have the fitments for the radius rods and sway bar. Best guess.

Getting back to Matthew Whosit and his cute little Lincoln: the V8's for Mercury and Lincoln really were different from regular Fords, a little bigger and better-bearinged. We had flatheads in our trucks a long time ago, and would seek out a (junkyard) Mercury or Lincoln block when building an engine up for shtrong. I don't know of them being in demand as base stock for race motors, though.

That particular Armored Car was IMHO the best one in existence in any Nation at the start of WW 2. When you combine mobility and fire power it was a lot better than any other.

That would include 45mm gun armed Soviet BA series Cars. The 25mm Cannon on the P-178 could smack through the armor of even the early Pz III's and IV's of the time.

Taking a hit was a bit of a problem but every other AC in the world had that problem.

Fast, a very good gun that could penetrate the side and rear armor of T-34's at about 250 yards or less.

Only about 110 of them built though, so their effect was very limited.

The M8 Greyhound? Mixed on that one. Most of what I have read, the crews didn't like them at all. They would have preferred using M5's for the jobs that that Armored Cav Regiments were assigned to do.

442 REM is the term and it was used throughout the US military because the military invented it. It stands for Radiation Equivalent Man. Some now say Roentgen Equivalent Man to get it closer to what its purpose is.

It is that amount of radiation absorbed in soft body tissue as that which causes damage equivalent to that of absorption of one Roentgen of gamma radiation. There is a mathematical formula for calculating it based on the energy and type of radiation measured but I can not remember it offhand and am too lazy at 5 am to look it up.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at October 26, 2016 04:50 AM (mpXpK)

443 BTW, REM or more commonly used mrem, is both singular and plural. There is no "REMS". It is abbreviated with the symbol R or mr.

The legal limit for a radiation worker exposure is 3R/QTR. But it is administratively limited to less than 1R/QTR at most sites with even a buffer for that,

Posted by: Tim (the poll troll) in Illinois at October 26, 2016 05:03 AM (d76uN)

445 The early Geiger counters clicked on everything. So do the new rad monitors. You have to listen for an "increase" in the clicks and look at the meter readout. There is an alarm function on all of them now that you set before entering a high rad area to warn you to get out if it goes off due to "unexpected" conditions.

450 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, October 26, 2016. On this day in 1825 the Erie Canal opened passage from Albany, New York to Lake Erie. How many of you Morons remember the old song we used to sing in grammar school; "Low Bridge Everybody Down"? What I liked about the canal was it was financed through private and NY State agencies. The President at the time (Thomas Jefferson) thought the idea was insane. Actually it was not so much insane as being almost totally for the benefit of NY and NY land speculators and merchants. Of course when I went to school we were firmly under the thumb of the FDR commies and they all loved the idea of big government financed follies like this.

Never been much of a Tequila fan, with one exception. While primitive camping for a week in the desert, my buddies and I would swig Tequila (we brought a couple of those plastic camping flasks pre-filled) around the campfire at night. And I enjoyed it then. Since we were surrounded by agave, it just seemed to fit as a campfire libation.

Give 'em a loaded .32. Same difference.

Don't touch the stuff anymore, not after that one day/night in college. But I have heard Patron brand tequila is good, with bottles coming in a varied price range. For example, you can buy a bottle of Gran Patron Burdeos Anejo Tequila for $500, with cheaper bottles around $40 up to $150. I guess it depends on how good a friend the person you owe a bottle to is.

Posted by: RickZ at October 26, 2016 06:10 AM (z1o2c)

467 Looked up Cabo Wabo. That appears to be what I need. Now to find it.

468 {adds Patron to list of possibles} Now we're getting somewhere. Maybe not $500/bottle, though.

Posted by: creeper, the deplorable at October 26, 2016 06:13 AM (Z7pPJ)

469 Well it's a personal taste thing. The goods tend to have a bite to them I don't care for. Some folks prefer it.
I like smooooth. Hence, the Blantons.

I was recently shocked by the price of a 750 ml bottle of Johnny Jameson 12-Year-Old. $106 after tax. I mean, geez, it's a pre-teen FFS. The 25-year-old bottle was outrageous and I didn't feel like taking out a personal loan.
