Solid Piece at Cracked About the Rise of Trump

Cracked is a Social Justice Warrior dumpster fire, but this piece from one of its only actual talents (David Wong) is pretty good.

Apparently he grew up in a red county, and he sees the Trump phenomenon as largely about the haves -- largely centered in the cities - and have-nots in rural areas, which, he says, have "had the shit kicked out of them."

I'm telling you, the hopelessness eats you alive.

And if you dare complain, some liberal elite will pull out their iPad and type up a rant about your racist white privilege. Already, someone has replied to this with a comment saying, "You should try living in a ghetto as a minority!" Exactly. To them, it seems like the plight of poor minorities is only used as a club to bat away white cries for help. Meanwhile, the rate of rural white suicides and overdoses skyrockets. Shit, at least politicians act like they care about the inner cities.

It really does feel like the worst of both worlds: all the ravages of poverty, but none of the sympathy. "Blacks burn police cars, and those liberal elites say it's not their fault because they're poor. My son gets jailed and fired over a baggie of meth, and those same elites make jokes about his missing teeth!" You're everyone's punching bag, one of society's last remaining safe comedy targets.

Although he was born in a red county, he says (with a bit of irony) that he now "knows" everything he used to think is wrong because he know lives in a blue city and in a blue industry. I think he's kinda-sorta half-serious about believing all the stuff he used to believe is wrong -- while making the point that he probably only believes that because he's now been socialized by his dogmatic liberal coworkers to "know" the new received wisdom.

Good piece, I think. It might be useful for the GOP's own urban elite, who like to think of themselves as knowing cosmopolitans but who are really blinkered provincials, to read it.

Thanks to "Tusk."

But the people who need to hear that won't listen.

Because they think (correctly, in my opinion) that the election is in the bag and Scankles should be standing behind the "Office of the President-Elect" seal right now. So whatever "concerns" the Trump voters might have - which, we all know, are about keeping dem darkies away from de white wimmen - are going to be soundly stomped on in November.

They think Trump voters are simply having a temper tantrum and that, once Trump is defeated, they'll hang their heads in shame and go back to those shitty factory jobs and redneck bars and meth labs because, really, they haven't the ambition or intelligence to be anything other than racist proles. Hillary can continue to fund her social experiments on the back of the rednecks and working class, because what other choice do they have? They WILL be made to pay, which is the most wonderful thing of all. And if they lose their job and go bankrupt? Fuck it, fewer dumb honkles means a better America.

And, the left is certain deep in their hearts, they have the power. They will be able to crush any uprising some dumb fat, drunk militia wannabes dare to attempt.

Trump is, to them, the last dying scream of racist white men who ought to be exterminated.

48 "I love the smell of bullshit in the morning ... It smells like victory."

Even an honest poll is subject to Turnout Risk. 2016 turnout patterns are nearly certain to vary from 2012. E.g. Many minorities who voted for Obama will stay home. But by how much? Non-college whites will vote more for Trump than Romney. But by how much?

NBC for example threw out its own turnout survey because it turned out to be "too old and too white" (their words), and instead assumed 2012 patterns, and have since skewed their poll even more.

The brand new ABC tracking poll has Independents +8% for Hillary but the IBD poll has it +13% for Trump. At least one of these polls is badly wrong. Independents will be something like a third of actual voters so this is no small difference. But the IBD poll is ignored while the ABC poll generates banners and headlines.

Purposefully skewing polls is a kind of voter suppression. It also serves to penalty kill for Hillary by hogging media air time.

But does MSM keep this up? It presents a dilemma. If they true up their polls in the last week it screams that Trump's back in the game with momentum. Or do they keep skewing their polls at the risk that it suppresses Hillary's turnout?

One of the consolations I have maintained throughout this process is that if... IF Hillory is selected, she won't have anywhere to hide.

Yes I know, the media carried dumb Barry's arse for 8 years, but Hillory is not Barry. She hasn't the right skin color, she hasn't the right persona, and frankly, as thin skinned as the Scoamf is, I never really bought that he was hateful. Distantly disdainful, yes, but for Hillory it's visceral hate.

She might set the left on its path of destruction. Or maybe she won't, and will set the rest of us on ours, but I do think she's as hated as is humanly possible for somebody about the be erected President. And yes, I know who Dick Nixon was. I've heard of him.

94 They do not understand the reasons for the rise of Trump because they dare not try. If they actually did they would have to face their own failings and that will not be done. No, instead invent imaginary reasons such as racism, sexism, religious bigotry, xenophobia. That way they can argue with and destroy the shadow-foe they have made, and the real problems get worse and harder to deal with, becoming less willing to compromise.

I didn't realize until yesterday that I think I'm done with the show. I watched HBO's Westworld instead, which is emerging as a fascinating study in humanity. Lots of people were screaming about the brutality, but they're exploring this in a way that does NOT glorify it, and indeed, is well aware how this parallels our current world, where make believe violence and sex is sold to us by an entertainment/gaming industry that cannot POSSIBLY control the extent to which humans will immerse themselves.

114 This Cracked analysis by Wong is pretty much what I have been thinking since the Tea Party days.

The divide is not about "left" vs. "right" anymore.

It's about the powerful privileged elite versus the Otherized Other.

Except that who qualifies as being "the powerful privileged elite" is quite the opposite of what the media and culture pounds into our heads.

It is the limousine liberals and their pet charity projects who are now the powerful privileged elite.

They are the oppressors. They don't know it, and they would scream in protest were they to be informed of it, but it is undeniable who has the whip hand in society.

Trump voters are everyone on the receiving end of that whip hand: "average" people, old-fashioned people, poor white people, lower-middle-class white people, middle-class white people in the rural areas, people who understand the meaning of the poem "The Gods of the Copybook Headings," and of course toothless hicks.

I can agree that this all started with the Tea Party. But I think (and hope) that it becomes part of a broader movement, starting with a core of working and middle class whites who've been pushed aside and pushed around long enough and then spilling over to everybody else who either disagrees with and wants to oppose the leftists and/or the globalist elites. This will either replace the GOP as it is now or become it's own political entity.
I'm probably not articulating this well. And maybe it will happen in a way we don't expect, but I do think this is a genuine political/social movement and it will become a reality. We just need some smart, charismatic leadership to take the reins to lead and define it.

160 cracked guy makes some good points, but the big difference between big city and "rural" (which he takes as all but really huge cities) ... is there are so many poor AND minorities in the big cities.

I'm also in a "downstate" Illinois town (at U of I we used to joke that Chicago area people called everyone else "downstate") But the poor down here vote Democrat, the public workers vote Democrat ... there are just fewer of them down here. And I'm near Quincy where Phil Hare famously said "I don't really care about the constitution on this". We had a Democrat mayor till just recently.

Trump has whites over 35, way on his side. The "trailer trash" Cracked guy depicts are not the Trump voters, it is the working class that vote Trump. I thought despite some good points in the article, he is also doing the old "Trump voters are dumb old hicks" routine, but he wanted to show a little sympathy (moby like, "yeah, I was raised with ignorant goat fuckers, so I understand Trump people"). It is like Bill Clinton trashing the coal miners, that Hillary put out of work.

Not sure where you guys are getting this. Barky has sent busloads of SEIU thugs to the houses of individual Americans to harass and terrify them. He has ginned up racial animosity hoping to spur on race riots - which he's been highly successful at. He's gone after individuals who have been protecting themselves in order to make clear that self defense is illegal for whites but wanton crime is perfectly acceptable for blacks. His JustUs department has bent every law and rule to make this nation a chaotic hellhole. He has worked to break, degrade and demean every single tradition, law, or process that we have had in place to run this once-great nation.

barky has attacked both our systemic structures and every individual who happened into his eyesight. He has worked to make life as bad as he possibly could for the mainstay of the American population. He has gone around the world blaming America and Americans for everything that popped into his anti-Western pea-brain, most of which were total lies, to start.

And you people think he doesn't hate Americans?? Really?

But the people who need to hear that won't listen.

Because they think (correctly, in my opinion) that the election is in the bag and Scankles should be standing behind the "Office of the President-Elect" seal right now. So whatever "concerns" the Trump voters might have - which, we all know, are about keeping dem darkies away from de white wimmen - are going to be soundly stomped on in November.

...
Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing

The polls are no worse for Trump than they were for Reagan, and Helmut Norpoth's primary Presidential prediction model "predicted" a Reagan win, same as it's predicting a Trump win. Plus there's IBD/TPP and Rasmussen.

Norpoth predicted Obama winning in '12 despite many polls being in Romney's favor.

I don't see any reason to believe them. We know they are all in and colluding with Hillary.

Turnout was the theory for Trump and Norporth's model relies on it heavily.

Remember the Dem Michigan primary polls were off by 25 % at the end. They predicted 27 % victory for Hillary and got 2 %.

If they aren't conspiring, cheating and lying about he polls, its the only thing they are running square. Unless the theory is "they are cheating but surely they are not cheating that much?". Not buying it.

212 I hate Cracked, David Wong lost me a long time ago, but on Ace's endorsement I clicked over. Wong did get the very real Us v Them flavor right.

Case in point...I'm from a rather rural, poor Red area and was the first in my family to graduate college. I started out as a bank examiner and I was assigned to some "problem" banks. They were "problems" because their assigned Examiners were all effete government types from HQ in San Francisco. If you're a bank president at a $20mm bank in rural Colorado, you could give a fuck about what some blow dried shithead from California thinks about how you run your bank.

So I was successful not because I knew my shit better than the other guys, but because I could approach the rural bankers on their level...since their level was my level. And those banks stopped being "problems."

Funny that.

Back then the worst a poll deviated was 3-4 points. Now we're seeing 14 point deviations. FOURTEEN POINTS. In other words, you never had a scenario where Romney would be up by one, and then the next poll shows Obama up by 13. It was more like Romney by one and Obama by 2, and so on.

One of the excuses I hear about why polls oversample democrats is because they are more likely to vote than republicans/indies, so even when they enjoy a +4 weight in registration, because they turn out to vote more, it's "scientific" to pad those numbers even more.

If the inverse is true and they completely got their shit wrong in turnout prediction, we can only imagine what the difference is going to be on election day.

My parents grew up here. My grandfather grew up here. He grew up with Dick Phillips, US Court of Appeals Justice, Dean of UNC Law. He grew up with Terry Sanford, President of Duke, NC Governor, US Senator. He grew up with the man who formed what would become Bank of America. This county and area used to be thriving, full of wealth, intelligence, and opportunity with prosperous small businesses everywhere.

Today there is a Walmart, a large office doling out government assistance, and a hospital that seems about to close. People ask us "why did you move here?" with an inflection that implies we were just damn foolish. (A: because my work just requires an internet connection and access to an airport, otherwise, it would have been just damn foolish to move here). Rural america has been CRUSHED.

280 If Hillary wins, (please, God, no), I think we will look back at the Trump campaign and belabor a few missed opportunities. One big one will be capitalizing on Bernie's hypocrisy and the DNC cheating with Millennials.

If Trump could somehow tap that group of young people disillusioned with Bernie and Hillary, that would be a huge get. I know she polls like shit with Millennials.

Trump should really press that until the cows come home. Not just the week where they repeated her "you live in your mom's basement" statement from Hillary.

Millennials are a big group.

Trump has never been against homosexual "marriage" and doesn't seem to give a crap about the issue. Not that they represent a significant constituency.

I don't think there's a poll conspiracy (and yes I know the Podesta email about oversampling), I just think this year has been so crazy that none of the rules apply any more. This may sound strange, but when Bush 41 was at 90% approval rating after Gulf War 1, I knew in 1991 he was going to lose to Billy Bob Blow Job in 1992..

My main reason (among others) was because of the extended air play of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" or whatever that song is called.

That song got lots of play way, way, way longer than most hit songs do. Between bashing Thousand Points of Light and praising Jesse Jackass, it just gave me a bad feeling.

And yes, despite the total onslaught of the Prog scum in every aspect of life, despite my son thinking I'm totally nuts, I still think Trump is gonna win.

291 I still think Trump should pull a last minute surprise policy by announcing the jwest energy plan...

500 identical nuke plants spread out across the county providing a secure, clean, free energy source for everyone.

Hammer home how base industries like steel, aluminum and copper will all be based in the U.S. with (practically) free electricity. Talk about how the poor and middle class would be better off with (again, practically) free electricity, heating and air conditioning. How many seniors would vote for the opposition to supplementing their Social Security with free energy?

One trillion puts 500 nuke plants on line. Local utilities transport the power and bill based on how far from the plant the user is.

All built on federal land, no liability, no lawsuits, no disposal costs.

Communities can vote on whether to have a plant or not. If they vote yes, the power is near free to them. If not, they have to import the power from farther away and it cost more.

Any heavy manufacturing plant reliant on heat and energy would be crazy to locate anywhere but the U.S.

This is a winner.

357 Here's a glimpse from *deep* inside Blue Virginia. I live in a 'hood
full of State employees, Brown grads, artists, foundation types, Kennedy
Center donors, virtue-signal bumperstickers on the Subaru, etc.--deep,
deep blue. "The FBI used to tap all the phones in the neighborhood in
the 60s and 70s." Been here since 2004. Echt suburbia. Like my work, the neighbors not
so much.

2004: I put out the Bush/Cheney sign, the neighbor gets a
nosebleed in his rush over to introduce self and ask, sidelong glance,
if I "know the politics of the neighborhood." No recriminations, but
within a week, the yards on both sides, 12 houses maybe--Kerry/Edwards
signs, 3-4 per yard. Serious on-team signalling.

2008: Same
thing. Watch the election with about a dozen GOP types, the core of
conservatism in a neighborhood of about 300 households. Probably every
other, maybe every third house had an Obama sign.

2012: Repeat.

2016:
Mirable dictu, I drove through the neighborhood this weekend--counted
about 20 HRC signs. No Trump signs. Remarkably few Bernie signs during
the primaries--these folks are natural Bernie/Fauxahontas voters.

Either my hard-blue neighbors are a) ready to vote for her, but ashamed of her, or they're b) sure Trump is too dumb to win, and She doesn't need
their yardsign help. In any case, it's weird....waaaaay too quiet. 300 houses, in
NoVA, and very, very little evidence of support. Atypical, very weird.

Northern Virginia, bedroom communities for D.C.
Trendy little boutique semi-farms, all with Hillary signs.

Get into real farm country, and the signs instantly switch to Trump signs.

Little VIA comments that it seems like where people actually work with their hands, and do physical labor, they tend to vote for Trump.

As someone who lives in rural-ish Northwestern VA, I can verify this is predominantly true. Winchester is slowly transforming from a agro-industrial forgotten rural "city" into hipster central, so there are the occasional Clinton signs. But for the most part, even in the more posh areas, the signs are almost entirely ones for Trump.

Strangely, though, eastern Loudoun county (which was gleefully declared "purple" by the usual media useful idiots after Obama) seems to have only Trump signs as well. Not just the gentrified suburbs like Ashburn, but the heavily-Democratic poorer parts of Sterling filled with Salvadorian immigrants. It seems a lot of people across the classes and left-right lines are united in being fed up with Washington shenanigans.

Thank you.

Its sad, the site used to be a place where anyone outside of the 700 Club demographic could be entertained, then it became garbage.

412 This article makes the point that one's vote is highly correlated to one's population density. Which means there's hope. If you can spread out city people enough, they will start to vote more conservatively, if this correlation continues.

Well, suppose you're living in a city making a good living but not good enough to work in the city without a long commute. In a few years, you'll be able to buy a self-driving vehicle that allows you to watch porn and drink been all the way home. And let's talk about that home. If you're willing to extend your private beer-drinking and porn-watching time another 20 or 30 minutes, you could move out of your 1800 ft^2 house on a 1/4 acre lot in the burbs and into a 2500 ft^2 house on 10 acres in one of those pretty little towns that time forgot just outside the metropolitan area, and maybe put a little money in the bank while you do it.

So I expect that as self-driving cars come online there will be a large group of middle-class people who move one step out, and the people in the small towns who sell them their homes will in many cases take one step out into the country too. Over time, they'll start voting more conservatively.

I know it's not much to hang one's hat on, but I do think that we'll see a trend toward more conservative voting lagging these cars' coming online.

414 In NC, I can go thumbing through the phone book, pick a name and verify they are registered and go to their polling place and vote. Absolutely no verification at all. Just give them a name and address.

415 Thank you for posting this!

I have this SJW friend who often makes fun of "people from West Virginia," as she calls them. Poor people (as long as they're white) are her personal punching bag. Mind you, she is a person who would shriek at the top of her lungs if she heard anyone criticize or make fun of a poor person who happens to be black or Hispanic. I have never laughed at her horrid attempts at humor and always choose to change the subject.

Next time she does it, I am going to ask her directly: Why do you consider it OK to make fun of white people who are poor and poorly educated when you would never consider doing that to a poor person from a minority background? Nothing will change this person, of that I'm certain, but I hope to at least make her uncomfortable for a moment or two.

416 "What is ironic is a billionaire from New York has a better handle on the pulse of the middle class than most folks in DC that allegedly are in public service."

It isn't that ironic. Most of the wealthy that actually build/make things interact with these people all of the time and if they didn't have a certain level of respect for them the things they need done would never get done.

Politicians spend their lives in one swap or another planning and devising ways to fool or redirect you. If the worked with or respected the common person then any small sliver of a conscience might be a problem.

418 I don't know if they "adjusted" but the PPP NC poll is +9 Dem

419 That really was a good piece. Every word of it true. However, as I've always said, I don't accept excuses like "white privilege" and "institutional racism" from black people for their social pathologies and I'm damn sure not going to accept excuses like "the textile plant shut down" from my own race for their social pathologies.

You want to "make it" in America? It's all on you pal. That's one of the benefits of Judeo-Christian religion. It teaches you that the biggest problem in your life is you. Get married. Stay faithful. Don't have more kids than you can afford. Involve yourself in community organizations like a church. Yes, even if you're an atheist. It has been empirically proven time and again that being part of a religious community makes you happier, financially better off, and extends life-span.

Find joy in less intense, longer-lasting highs like a life well lived. Don't attempt to find your joy in the shorter, more intense high of drugs, alcohol, and illicit sex. Jeez, that sounds just like what religious rubes have been telling humanity for centuries. Maybe they were on to something?

420 Weird.

Wong says in the headline that "half of America lost its fucking mind," but then goes on, point by point with a sledgehammer, to support that "half" of America in their decision to throw a brick through the Totalitarians' window.

Still, a good one to pass on to the millennials, especially. They might read a Cracked.com piece.

422 There is no denying the Republicans have the passion now, the enthusiasm. The Democrats do not. Independents are breaking for Romney. And there's the thing about the yard signs. In Florida a few weeks ago I saw Romney signs, not Obama ones. From Ohio I hear the same. From tony Northwest Washington, D.C., I hear the same.

I think this is an important point a lot of people miss about a lot of the morals that come from tradition rather than from the bleeding heart perspective. There's an element of introspection and self discipline taught with the former, while the social justice warrior morals are generally used more for shaming or attacking a third party, usually to extract a concession or something. You do see some SJWs apologizing for certain things like failing to properly check their privilege, but that tends to play out more along the lines of bickering over manners than of deep, self-bettering, moral introspection.
