Why is the painting so fuzzy? So these poor people had to live not only without Tylenol, but without nice paintbrushes too? Or is it painted that way to be interactive, inducing headaches in the viewer so that they might directly experience the Suffering of the subject?

By the way, all of Larry Elmore's paintings are crisp and clear. And they don't give you headaches. They just make you want to heroically vanquish your enemies and earn the adulation of hot elf chicks.

66 With apologies, I'm reposting this comment from the morning thread because a) I think the issue is that important and I want to raise awareness and action, and b) I really would appreciate the horde's advice on this and my original comment was way down in the 300s and so may not be seen by many at all. So here it is in it's tl;dr fullness...

Horde, I need your advice. This CA National Guard thing, for me, isn't the last straw, it's the last brick to the head. For me, the full faith and credit of the United States is on full display - $0.00. Actually worse than that, because these soldiers are in a worse position than if they had never done business with the US Government.

Here is my position: If this is legal, then I do not respect the laws of this land any more and will no longer salute its flag or stand for its anthem. If it is illegal, then the Pentagon lawyers who wrote these letters knew or should have known they were making baseless threats to their own veterans, and they should be fired and publicly shamed. In either case, I want these soldiers to get the money promised under the terms of the contracts THEY honored, and to receive personally-delivered apologies from very high levels.

I am calling my Senators and Reps today to say the above and to vow to vote against every incumbent of either party I can until these soldiers have been repaid and have received their apologies. I am, from this day until these things happen, a single-issue voter.

Here's where I need the sanity check and advice. I am also thinking about rather extreme civil disobedience. First, I mentioned my lost respect for the law if this behavior is legal: can any moron attorneys weigh in on that? Is there a civilian example of a situation in which a party to a contract can deliver the goods and services owed under the contract's terms and 10 years later lose the compensation described in the contract because, oops, their counter-party forgot to actually approve the expenditure? Can I call up the guy who built my deck and get the money back because I never got my wife to approve the expense? Is there an example anyone can think of that wouldn't be laughed out of court? I can think of only one - if the money were stolen, in which case the government has an excellent point!

Otherwise, I am thinking about a civil disobedience campaign. Not sending a dime in taxes while this problem exists. Breaking other federal laws, nonviolently, while this behavior remains legal. I understand that there is likely a price to be paid for this, and and so, second, how might one set up their affairs to shield their family as much as possible from the governments claws? Put all property in her name and file for divorce? If we still live together would that even do the trick?

I tried to enlist at 33 back in 2002 because I was willing to send soldiers to war in Iraq and it occurred to me that I wasn't too old to put my ass where my mouth was, so I did. My friends and family thought I was crazy at the time, but I wasn't. An old back injury kept me out of the service, to my great disappointment.

I am willing to go to war over THIS now, metaphorically and damn near physically. "We" have found countless billions of dollars to spend illegally over the last 16 years. Beating money out of these soldiers is simply robbery, IMO.

So, third, have I lost my mind? What's your "last straw?"

Much obliged for your time and advice.

81 Civil disobedience assumes (a) that the law is immoral and (b) that it is otherwise legitimate. It is accepting the legal framework but agitating for a change within that. It also accepts, as a result, the legal repercussions for your actions in defiance.

Justin, you (and I suspect an increasing level of others) are in a place where the second half of the proposition--the laws in question being legitimate--is not a thing you accept. This is beyond simple civil disobedience and is a question of you versus the raw coercive power of the state. I do not have an answer for you on that basis, as that is the hardest of all roads to travel.

Prayers for all running into this; these things will become more common and harder to deal with as this goes on. I also suggest we all start begging forgiveness from the Divine and asking for guidance for what we need to put right...though I suspect we already know most of the outlines.

Chase knew how to draw a straight line. I think Chase is making a subtle reference to the Parthenon, an architectural and artistic wonder in which its design was deliberately flawed in such a way by its genius Greekmakers that it would appear perfect at viewing distance.

We're not looking at Chase's painting at its proper size and viewing distance, which would be at or about 15-20 feet. We're looking at a photo onscreen. The artist's purpose has been obscured and distorted by the viewing technology.

87 Actually, one piece of advice - see if you can get a lawyer? I think there are appeals and also a class action lawsuits.

In general, if you can say that you didn't lie on anything in whatever documents you gave to get the bonus/money, then its on them for deciding to give it to you.

For example, in unemployment benefits, I know of cases where the person files for unemployment, gets money, then they later say, oops, you don't qualify, give it back. If the person can show no intent to deceive or something (I forget the legal term) they drop the issue.

99 Chase is an interesting artist employing different styles. This piece and others are great examples, for my taste, of Impressionism. But he did portraits that are realistic and at least one still life that reminds me of the Low Country artists. In spite of his genteel subject matter in many paintings he did a nude that is accurate and evocative. (She had great elbows.)

Thoroughly pleasurable work that displays serious technical talent and an eye for the tastes of the day's culture.

The snarky comments aside, and they are funny, Chase manages to convey how a piece of music can bring out strong emotion. That's something I can easily identify with. Thanks CBD.

The article that I read on that gave the impression that the State of CA gave them a bonus which the Army was supposed to pay for being activated and sent to Iraq.

The Pentagon now says that the bonus was not authorized and was thus illegal, therefore they have to give it back. My question is, so if it was not authorized, why did they pay it in the first place? There is an obscure law on the books that actually allows the government and demand money back that was mistakenly paid. And the only proof they need is "they said so". I got a letter from the Navy a year after I got out claiming I had been overpaid on discharge by several hundred dollars and they wanted it back. I threw it in the trash.

Do not say you will refuse to pay your taxes. Do not say you intend to break the law. Do not use your real name when making such statements. Do not allow emotions to cloud your judgement.

Civil disobedience has a long and storied history in the US. However, it only works ifthe government that you are protesting against is somehow suceptible to moral persuasion, whether indirectly via public opinion or directly via strength of the argument you're making.

Should be noted that Gandhi's methods of nonviolentcivil disobedience would not have worked against Hitler's Germany.

131 .If that is accurate there has been a 5 point swing in one election
cycle. Not a single poll out there is capturing that. Everyone here
knows that hillary is not going to generate the turnout obama got in
2012.
=========
That's what's interesting.

Oh how being wrong about the polls in 2012 still stings.

One thing I had misremembered about Obama's turnout in 2012: It did not hold steady from 2008--it fell AND it was less than all the pollsters had predicted.

(2012 was closer than they let on. Which is why Mitt being such a B and refusing to fight makes one sick.)

But--and I have not verified this myself, I don't have the time--all the polls today are assuming Hillary
(A) getting the same level of Obama turnout (esp. minorities), a mix of 2016 and 2008, and
(B) Oversampling Dems by margins larger than the actual Dem turnout in 2012.

Are they right? IDK.

Anyone seen any poll over the last few weeks that measures voter enthusiasm?
That's a pretty damned basic question, don't you think?

I can't recall seeing anything like a "how likely are you to vote?" question out there. It's all secret sauce of 2008/2012 assumptions, near as I can tell.

140 I haven't seen an article with enough detail for me to really understand the overpayment thing. If it was a bonus on a contract, then it's a legally binding document signed in good faith by all parties. If the contract said $10k and they gave you $15k, that's on you. If you get paid over what your LES says you should because DFAS fucked up, it isn't your money, they'll withhold your pay until you're even.

If recruiters were putting more bonuses on the contract than they were authorized to, then they're on the hook, and everyone else up the ladder.

I used to command a recruiting company of 8 stations. The only time anyone ever had to repay a bonus was when that person did not abide by their enlistment...namely they failed to graduate from the program for which they enlisted. And that was rare too as most bonus payments were withheld until graduation.

This stinks. If the Generals and Command Sergeants Major at the CA Guard, the National Guard Bureau and the Department of the Army can't figure this out, and soon, then they own what follows. "Hey Army, who you going to get to volunteer when the next war comes along?"

As an aside, check out the perspective on 'Awakening Conscience'. If you getthat uneasy, uncanny valley feeling while looking at it, it's because Hunt screwed the perspective.

All of the major polls say that they base their weighting averages on the previous election. The question of "likely voter" is supposed to give them an idea of turnout and they can use that term in their PR. Of course everyone answers that with yeah sure I will vote. Just like almost all of them say that they are a "moderate".

But in at least 80% of the polls that I have looked at the internals on they have weighted the Democrats by huge amounts above what the 2012 election was. and a lot of them do not even give that that weighting fraction which tells me that it is so far out to lunch they do want you to see it.

The bottom line is this. Scankles may indeed win this election, but it will be because there is enough turnout combined with fraud in black urban areas to give her a narrow majority in those key toss-up States. Those are the ones Trump MUST get some poll watchers to in those urban areas.

161 I just checked Florida voter stats from the FL SOS website and out of 12
million registered voters the Dems outnumber Republicans by 200,000.
That small of an advantage is statistical noise with 12 million voters
and there should be no D+ anything in poll samples from Florida.
=======
Don't assume that.

If there is something that says, "Dems are more likely to vote than Rs" then yes, you would have to weigh more Dems in your poll, above basic registration numbers.

That is the question: What is the enthusiasm for Dem and R voters?

Are the polls measuring this, or are they assuming a turnout based on past history?
(Which would be valid: Past voters are the most likely voters, no matter what a voter says their enthusiasm is today.)

I read the methodology for every poll listed.

In all that mention their modeling, they base turnout on 2008 and 2012 results. None have any adjustment factor for "enthusiasm".

As I've mention numerous times, the egregious tampering is the near-universal practice on this election to take 3 percentage points away from the republican and add 3 points to the democrat to adjust for the difference in cell phone and land line users.

A total 6 point swing just because of phones.

My takeaway is that it's okay to bring in a loved one of someone killed by an illegal as long as they push the Left's narrative, but it's not okay if they want to actually stop illegal immigration.

With all the Wikileaks videos being released that have Democrats bragging about how they rig polls, oversample, etc. I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone is believing any poll at this point.

When people like Pat Caddell, who live and died by polls, etc. as a former Democrat campaign advisor, are saying not to believe ANY poll, there are too many of them and the methodology, etc. is flawed, not to mention that contacting people is now very difficult do to cell phones, etc. I am ignoring polls.

The news shows etc. on Fox, CNN and MSM are simply scratching to filler for their 24/7 news cycles and so polls make for something for their guests to attempt to opine on.

Ignore it.

The Pentagon now says that the bonus was not
authorized and was thus illegal, therefore they have to give it back. My
question is, so if it was not authorized, why did they pay it in the
first place? There is an obscure law on the books that actually allows
the government and demand money back that was mistakenly paid. And the
only proof they need is "they said so". I got a letter from the Navy a
year after I got out claiming I had been overpaid on discharge by
several hundred dollars and they wanted it back. I threw it in the
trash.

Right! This puts everyone who conducts business with the federal government on alert - caveat emptor! The agency charged with settling contract disputes requires, de jure, every counter-party to determine if the government's offer is actually funded and not just made-up horsesh!t. This makes a contract with the federal government worthless: Congress and the Executive can't even agree on what's funded, cf. the payments to insurance companies. It's impossible to ask people signing up to be privates and 2nd Lts to personally determine if their bonuses are properly funded, and so, de jure, this is robbery.

We do have a mechanism for righting this wrong. It's called the courts. These soldiers who are being told to repay a bonus from a decade ago can form a class action lawsuit and file a court action against the government.

You are titling at windmills here. Running out and saying you are going to start breaking laws in some kind of individual civil disobedience in support of these people is simply going to land you in jail, to the great emotional and financial strain on your family and for what?

You always want to pick an action for which success is possible. These soldiers have legal recourse and governmental recourse through their elected politicians.

.I am not buying any of that nonsense. Polling is getting harder and harder to do because of caller ID, it doesn't matter if it is a cell or traditional land line. The vast majority of people do not answer the phone if they don't know who is calling.

The pollsters are flailing around this cycle and they are almost all basing their numbers on turnout from 2008 and 2012 so they are weighting the numbers based on those two elections.

Some of the ones I have seen are giving the Dems a +10 over sample which is ridiculous. hillary is not going to generate anywhere the turnout obama did. obama only got a D+7 in 2008 and that fell to D+4 in 2012, and hillary is not even going to get that level of dem support.

Trump is tied in the two most accurate National polls from 2008 and 2012, IBD and the LA Times, and now along comes ABC poll with hillary up by 12? Pure shenanigans.

360 With all this talk about the polls being wrong, let's remember that these polling companies have made great advances in the past few years.

They have scientific ways of determining weighting and turnout.

Like the Michigan primaries.

Some polling companies had Hillary ahead by 38 points. The average of all the polls had her ahead by 21.5 points.

She lost by 1.5 points.

They said that big problems was that there wasn't enough polling companies working the Michigan race. So if they had more, maybe some of them would have showed Bernie ahead by 40 points and then everything would have averaged out fine.

Or, they fucked up.

Yes, in 2012 the polls were right, but who knows if they were right because of how they were conducted or if it was just a chance thing where the party atmosphere and weather and a hundred other circumstances combined to make the numbers land where they did.

There has never been an election where the media was so openly invested in making a winner out of the democrat, so I'm discounting all the previous warnings about how I should trust the polls.

368 Just got back from doing errands with the wee one. Barely a Cubs shirt to be had, although I did manage to snag a long sleeved one for myself. What I really was looking for was a kids shirt for the 7 year old. We discovered over the weekend she has outgrown her old one. Kohls said they might get a kids shipment in tonight. Good luck with that.

383 Lance, no attorney is going to give you advice on the internet, in an anonymous forum, as to how to protect your family while you break laws.

In my experience lawyers will volunteer that they are lawyers on anonymous forums all the time with almost no provocation whatsoever and then proceed to opine on any random topic, so I don't know why this one should be any different, but I would hate to ask an attorney to do anything they find distasteful, so maybe think of it as a hypothetical case study? A citizen, let's call him Thomas Paine, came to the conclusion that his government was corrupt and evil and washed his hands of it. He stopped paying his taxes and eventually was fined and imprisoned. What if anything could Thomas have done prior to his crimes to shield his family from the fines without actually moving out of the house they shared? One paragraph should do the trick but "you're being foolish" is an answer to a different question, so please, let's stay on topic.

We do have a mechanism for righting this wrong. It's called the courts. These soldiers who are being told to repay a bonus from a decade ago can form a class action lawsuit and file a court action against the government.

You are assuming that what the government is doing is illegal. Hence my question to people who'd know: Is it illegal?

You are titling at windmills here. Running out and saying you are going to start breaking laws in some kind of individual civil disobedience in support of these people is simply going to land you in jail, to the great emotional and financial strain on your family and for what?

I disagree. People kill police officers in Dallas and Dallas responds by inviting them to enlist and changing their practices to comply with the BLM list of demands. There is a lot of historical evidence that breaking the law can get you exactly what you want, from policy changes to the Presidency of the United States.

And in any case, I don't care. As I've said, I was once before willing to put my career and life on the line for this country, and today I am finding myself in the same mode willing to put my career and life on the line in spite of my country in support of its soldiers, who I do and always have loved.

You always want to pick an action for which success is possible. These soldiers have legal recourse and governmental recourse through their elected politicians.
Posted by: Jen the original at October 24, 2016 11:16 AM (tJAHd)

Maybe so. But talk is cheap and someone has to lead. I'm willing to tell a judge that the government may be able to beat money out of me and put me in jail, but I'll be goddammed if another dime I work to earn pays people to screw over soldiers. Plenty of people have gone to jail because of what they believe in.

Look, either one a pussy who flaps his or her lips on internet forums, but when push comes to shove can't be counted on, or one simply isn't "there" yet. I know which one I am, and I'm not asking you to approve of my decisions. I may not be able to win this by myself but someone has to lead.

We all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and tell ourselves that we are willing to tolerate this government and therefore it is exactly the government we deserve, or really think hard about what follows and start taking steps to mitigate collateral damage. I'm not telling you what to do, I'm just telling you where my mind is and am asking 3 questions - is this legal, how could Mr. Paine mitigated damage to his wife, and where is your line? Is there a line or would you just stop commenting on forums when that becomes too dangerous, having done nothing until then?

I'm inclined to believe you. But I've always thought that John McCain *tried* not to win towards the end of the 2008 election.
I think the powers that be saw where it was going and didn't want to stand in the way of a black president. But I don't think McCain had to be "told." He intuitively sensed it. I mean, he's part of the "powers that be.'

Mitt might have been told not to win. But again, it was towards the end. Otherwise, why bother running.

Romney wants to protect the honor of the Republican Party. Think of Romney as the father of a teenage daughter and imagine how that father would view his daughter's upcomingdate with Dennis Hopper during Hopper's acid period.

From what I understand, the Mormon church heavily favors unrestricted immigration because they are heavy proselytizers. Also, it is really taboo in Mormon culture to be a braggard. Trump rubs them the wrong way, culturally, right out of the gate because he's so in-your-face with the self-promotion.

But, there may be money involved too.

I don't care much about Utah, frankly. If Trump loses by a big margin, Utah won't matter. The same if he wins by a big margin. As long as McMuffin doesn't throw Utah to Hillary (and I kinda doubt that), the best he can do is force it to the House of Representatives.

I can't see how the GOP House could refuse to select Trump -- a man who tens of millions will have voted for -- in favor of Hillary or McMuffin. Doing so would break the party asunder. Ryan may try to extract some promises from Trump, but once he's the president, he's the president.

If you're going to worry, worry about North Carolina and then worry about Trump picking up enough EVs without winning Pennsylvania.

I'm not going to try and change anyone's opinion on the Catholic Church. Plenty of posters seem to delight in bashing it. The homily at this weekend's Mass, after discussing the readings, went straight into voting with an informed conscience and straight to abortion. Mormons also wear that funny underwear, amirite?

I think there are a few Mormons who comment here occasionally. In this thread, the following ideas about Mormons have been aired:

-Mormons want to be part of a New World Order
-Mormons aren't voting for trump because they want open borders in order to make converts (and open borders=treason is a corollary)
-Mormons want to impose their views on the entire nation

How much of this stuff is believed by the majority of the commentariat here? Or is it venting because Mormons seem to be rejecting Trump?

Like the Michigan primaries.

Some polling companies had Hillary ahead by 38 points. The average of all the polls had her ahead by 21.5 points.

She lost by 1.5 points.

They said that big problems was that there wasn't enough polling
companies working the Michigan race. So if they had more, maybe some of
them would have showed Bernie ahead by 40 points and then everything
would have averaged out fine.

Or, they fucked up.
=====================

Yep. And there's a big lesson there: The Bernie people saw those polls, too. They didn't care what the polls said, they just went out and voted for Bernie anyway. Bernie beat Hillary.

Hillary has so saturated the airwaves using Soros/ME money that she's buying air time in Red States and spreading it out to down-ballot Dem candidates.

Hillary is going to lose.

Never. One is either an obedient loyal citizen or a crazy dickhead tilting at windmills, but never a principled man of honor fulfilling his oath. Ain't nobody got time for that guy.

504 Third O'Keefe video implicates Hillary in co-ordinating with PACs.

In a million years you'd never get Creamer to 'fess up like this in a deposition or at trial, but here he is on tape spilling the beans.

Because he's like a Bond Villain who has to brag about it.

507 You know how in a sporting event so often when the favored team makes fun of the other team and insists they've got it all sewn up and how badly that goes for them? You can demoralize people by making them think its pointless, but firing up your opposition is another serious possibility.

And angry voters don't give a damn what the polls say.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 24, 2016 12:43 PM (39g3+)

508 How much of this stuff is believed by the majority of the commentariat here? Or is it venting because Mormons seem to be rejecting Trump?

The anti-Mormonism bothers me. For the most part they're good conservatives. Differences can be negotiated. The Jack Chick treatment of Mormons needs to stop.

509 The O'Keefe videos would matter in any sane world. The involvement of Hillary, the coordination of the campaign with the PACs, the involvement of dark money, etc.

But this won't "blow up" the Hillary campaign. To do that, you need to get video of Hillary doing something sensational and unspeakable. Raging out and hurling racial and ethnic epithets at a staffer, or something. Something equivalent (and on just as low a level) as the grab-them-by-the-pussy quote. It needs to be 10-20 seconds in length and immediately cause a massive negative reaction.

O'Keefe is doing yeoman's work and he really did get some good stuff. But this isn't going to destroy Hillary. Maybe there are more bullets still in the gun.

I'm not an expert on theology, but I think there's a bit of difference between judging someone in a religious sense and determining that their character makes them unacceptable to vote for.

516 "I love the smell of bullshit in the morning ... It smells like victory."

Even an honest poll is subject to Turnout Risk. 2016 turnout patterns are nearly certain to vary from 2012. E.g. Many minorities who voted for Obama will stay home. But by how much? Non-college whites will vote more for Trump than Romney. But by how much?

NBC for example threw out its own turnout survey because it turned out to be "too old and too white" (their words), and instead assumed 2012 patterns, and have since skewed their poll even more.

The brand new ABC tracking poll has Independents +8% for Hillary but the IBD poll has it +13% for Trump. At least one of these polls is badly wrong. Independents will be something like a third of actual voters so this is no small difference. But the IBD poll is ignored while the ABC poll generates banners and headlines.

Purposefully skewing polls is a kind of voter suppression. It also serves to penalty kill for Hillary by hogging media air time.

But does MSM keep this up? It presents a dilemma. If they true up their polls in the last week it screams that Trump's back in the game with momentum. Or do they keep skewing their polls at the risk that it suppresses Hillary's turnout?

I agree that part of the responsibility of Christians is to point out that sin exists, when sin is being committed, and what the worldly and eternal wages of sin are.

I also believe that Christians can make the determination that forgiving sinners does not require supporting them or investing them with power.
