Obama's Cash-O-Rama Bonanza May Have Whetted Iran's Appetite for Ransoming More Hostages

Whodda thunk it?

Iran Seeking ‘Many Billions of Dollars’ in Ransom to Free U.S. Hostages

Source close to IRGC puts bounty on remaining U.S. hostages (Updated)

BY: Adam Kredo Follow @Kredo0
October 19, 2016 4:18 pm

Iran is seeking "many billions of dollars" in payments from the United States in exchange for the release of several U.S. hostages still being detained in Iran, according to reports by Iran’s state-controlled press that are reigniting debate over the Obama administration’s decision earlier this year to pay Iran $1.7 billion in cash.

Senior Iranian officials, including the country's president, have been floating the possibility of further payments from the United States for months. Since the White House agreed to pay Tehran $1.7 billion in cash earlier this year as part of a deal bound up in the release of American hostages, Iran has captured several more U.S. citizens.

Future payments to Iran could reach as much as $2 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter, who said that Iran is detaining U.S. citizens in Iran's notorious Evin prison where inmates are routinely tortured and abused.

Iranian news sources close to the country’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, which has been handling prisoner swaps with the United States, reported on Tuesday that Iran expects "many billions of dollars to release" those U.S. citizens still being detained.

"We should wait and see, the U.S. will offer … many billions of dollars to release"

I go back and forth, but I also have a bit more optimism than I did a few weeks ago.

I honestly think Trump's campaign should do more to make people think this is something within reach instead of focusing on being rigged and a foregone conclusion.

I'm still in the pessimistic camp, but I do think Elections are more in flux than people realize because they are somewhat zero sum. Had 2% of people "changed their mind" and voted against Obama, Romney would have won.

So if Trump can pull a couple more % in than Romney, Hillary underperforms a few % under Obama, and a few undecided voters land on Trump, the numbers can move quite a bit.

It looks like Wikileaks made a threat by highlighting the
Obama e-mails, especially since the e-mails were few in number and not
particularly relevant. They were saying that they had more. The
Podesta e-mails are interesting, but they are not the mother-lode. Release of Hillary/Obama/Mook/Huma/Mills e-mails is the trove (if they have it).
Then,
they threatened Kaine and Brazile -- odd for them to do that. But if
you are the USGOV, as the pieces come together, these hints may clue you
in on what wikileaks may have in their hand. Its another threat, with
no actual disclosure.
Today, we have a massive internet attack.
Wikileaks tweets some odd things, including the tuesday picture (which
now looks to be deleted). We're getting glimpses of something being
fought out behind the scenes.

98 As for why China hasn't taken Taiwan yet: I think Taiwan has a small but fairly sophisticated military, and a maritime invasion is notoriously hard. We had issues after shelling Iwo Jima for a month with several battleships; and Okinawa was a nightmare. And by that point, we were the best the world has ever known at maritime invasions.

China, for the first time, invading Taiwan? Seems... risky. It's a hard target to take. Plus, I'm not sure how much of Chinese military strength is just smoke and mirrors either. Sure, they can push off US assets because Barry's a punk and would surrender to Fiji, but an attack on a homeland guarded by a 1st world country; which I think Taiwan would be? Not a cakewalk, for sure. And a loss would set back Chinese prestige for generations.

No, I think they are going to wait until they are certain they could win.

Posted by: Chupacabra

Few Westerners realize that the Chinese Civil War, which started in 1927 (!!!) is STILL RAGING and has never come to and end, and by now is quickly nearing becoming the longest war of all time.

The Nationalist forces merely "strategically redeployed" to the Island of Formosa in the late '40s after the Communist forces seized Shanghai.

No one ever surrendered. There was never a peace treaty. There was never an Armistice. No one "won."

To this day, the Communist forces regard Formosa as a "breakaway province," while the Nationalist forces maintain that they are the legitimate government of all of mainland China, which is temporarily occupied by rebel troops.

It's amazing that the standoff has gone on this long with no resolution.

But make no mistake, the Communist government currently controlling mainland China is still currently AT WAR with the Nationalist government controlling Taiwan.

....

Oppositional pushback requires opposition.

You want: oppositional pushback
You'll settle for: A strongly worded letter
You'll get: Impeachment is off the table but we're going to send this goofy lawsuit over to some district court then go right back to rubber stamping everything and ceding congressional control of the debt limit

178 It just sucks that no one in that camp is able to give Trump any direction. I will say though he did quite well in the last 2 debates, it's just maddening when most casual posters here could better swat down some of these attacks than the candidate who supposed to be prepping for hours on end.

The thing is, that's what we'd do, and we want to see the ultimate zinger thrown down.

But is that what works best with voters? Is that what the modern Idiocracy voter wants to see or hear, a factual beatdown? Trump has built an incredible campaign on doing what he does, and for whatever reason, it really seems to work. He's reaching people where they are in a way that Ted Cruz or my personal choice Scott Walker never could or did.

That's where we are as a country. Its not a political contest, its a reality show, and Trump is getting Clinton voted off the island.

Its alot harder being in the arena than it is watching or spectating. That said, I think that there is a limit to how much Trump can prepare for these things. He improved over time, but sitting down and memorizing information in order to use set-attack points just isn't his style, and when your his age, living the life that he led, changing his persona is somewhat limited.

Hillary is just an automaton, fed information by her staff to regurgitate it up on stage. She's far more a cypher with her plastic mask and machine-like staccato delivery. Aside from her evil ambition and will to power, there doesn't seem to be any personality there at all.

Its actually probably quite sad to be her, day in and day out. Still, she is not deserving of sympathy.

In terms of properly prepping for a debate, yes, even though I loathe both of those figures.

At the same time, they would be scared shitless about sounding "mean" to a frail sweet woman like Hillary.

It's like we finally found a figure willing to take the gloves off but he won't do the homework.

Supposedly Roger Ailes was helping him with debate prep for the 2nd debate but left because Trump refused to take direction.

Debates aren't everything, ask President John Kerry, but I do feel like Trump should have made better use of that time with some more prep, particularly the first one. He has a lifetime of being a celebrity on TV with the #1 show on NBC, he should have smoked Hillary at every one of them.

212 How to respond to hostage takers:

Give the hostages up for dead.

Immediately bend every effort to kill the hostage takers, with a hugely disproportionate response, wherever and whoever they are.

Bend every effort to frustrate the desires and destroy the possessions of the hostage takers, be careful only not to be drawn in by a 'false flag' operation.

If so, same treatment to the 'false flaggers'.

Gotta be cold to do it - but you shouldn't have to do it often.

I think when he ran in 1980 and 84, Reagan was the ideal candidate. He was always ready, always likeable, always connected with voters, and always knew what he was talking about, controlling the debate. That approach wouldn't work as well today, but for the time: ideal.
