Trafalgar_by_Radojavor.jpg

Trafalgar
Some video game.....

No captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy.

Trafalgar was the first battle I learned about in depth. I had a few of those hard-bound "young adult" histories that I would buy at E.J. Korvette. Not much more than a flowery recitation of the plan of battle followed by lots and lots of action. I was eight...it was great, especially when I began to realize exactly what a British victory did for the world.

HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship, is a 104 gun first rater, and is the flagship of the First Sea Lord of the British navy. Notice the present tense? She is still commissioned, 257 years after her keel was laid.

For those of you who dislike recognizing one of the great naval victories in history, here is a link to a performance that might be more your speed.

What scares me the most is that this election has basically given these
idiots all the confidence they need to do ANYTHING in the proggy
playbook their little hearts desire. They finally showed their true
colors, admitted collusion and corruption and people STILL look to vote
her into office.

In other words, they now know there are at
least enough people in this country to either agree with them or not
care enough to stop them. With what I've seen of Obama (never thought
this country would even sniff socialist healthcare), I am doubly worried
by what's STILL in the prog playbook.

Open borders and gun control will be in the queue first. A study was done on how many people want to migrate to the US.

165 million people responded absolutely.

165 million new neighbors. All on the government tit, supported by your new 75% tax bracket.

Every now and then history (and sometimes mankind) produces something so perfect, so beautiful...and so completely irrelevant and obsolete.

The Iowas were artistry in armor, but largely useless for the war they were built for, and in terms of what they were used for over the next forty years (shooting up shoreside pillboxes) any of their three slower classes of predecessors would have done as well.

64 This is a High Holy Day in my house.

Most discussions overemphasize the unorthodox formation by not looking at the rationale for it. The real point was engaging as fast as possible, in a manner such that the allies could not avoid decisive action. The order of battle was essentially the order of sailing; no time wasted on forming an ideal battle order. (That used was not what the famous memorandum described, but did follow the memo's principles.)

Just remember, a man who will cheat on his wife will betray his country. Or so we have been assured.

Engage the enemy more closely.

87 It is telling that the bicentennial commemoration of Trafalgar in 2005 was dominated by PC: in order not to embarrass the visiting Frenchies, the opposing navies were identified as "red" and "blue" "teams." Significantly, the largest ship involved in the commemoration was the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

Sad to say, the present Royal Navy is only one-fifteenth the size it was in Nelson's day.

88 Hillary, Obama, the Dems and the media accuse Russia of trying to rig
our election while at the same time calling Trump insane for trying to
suggest that our elections can be rigged.

Only now, in this brief window in time, could any of this shit make sense to half of the brain dead idiots of this country.
======
In the mind of the leftist, it makes perfect sense.

See, the Russians are trying to rig the election for Trump.
That's bad.
But, there is no voter fraud committed by the Democrats in the US.
So, Trump is lying.

To be clear:
The Democrats--who live here, control nearly all the cities and who would directly benefit from rigging an election, ARE NOT trying to rig the election.
But, the Russians--who don't live here, don't control a single process related to the election and can't directly benefit from the election, ARE trying to rig the election.

Trump is lying.
Therefore, it makes sense to complain about the Russians rigging the election while also complaining about Trump saying the election is being rigged.

Also: what level of insanity is it to complain about the Russians trying to rig the election through the Wikileaks--as though what is being revealed doesn't matter? The Russians are trying to rig the election by . . . telling the Americans the truth?

Indispensable man -- but perverse in that respect. "Not a people person."

155 "It would be an interesting exercise to determine how the British cultivated their officer class if only to replicate those aspects oftheir programmethat produced such leaders."

The interesting thing is there wasn't really much of a system, and such as there was seems to have broken all the rules we think should apply. N A M Rodger has some good coverage of this in The Wooden World and in Command of the Ocean.

But the navy started them young. One of the many great things about O'Brien's Aubreyad is the portrayal of what an intelligent man is like, having very little education outside professional naval science. This is highlighted in contrast with the highly educated Maturin. (I confess I've been through the whole series 3 times; Mauritius command 6.)

The army was different in many ways. For one thing, it drew (on average) from people higher on the social scale, and got them later.

I think he was selecting people for slots in a pressure vessel, under pressure, filled with stressed sailors living with no margin for errors, with a near critical nuke pile as a bunk-mate; that they were playing blindfolded chicken with the Russians while staying ready to fight a nuclear war was an added bonus.

Anyone who wouldn't be arrogant and combative enough to face down and admiral might not be up to the pressure.

He might have just liked dicking with people too, but I like database entry and research, so I might also be a good pick for my job.

193 Kind of strange that the artist depicted the ships going at it in the traditional way of both ships delivering broadsides at each other. The day before the battle Nelson came up with sailing through the line and between the enemy's ships so the British could fire from all of their guns, at two enemy ships, at the same time. One cannonball shot though the length, instead of the width, of a ship's galley was devastating.

Some scholarship suggests that Nelson may have said "Kismet, Hardy." Nelson was familiar with Egypt, and it's not uncommon for sailors to pick up bits of language in foreign ports. "Kismet" (fate/destiny) would've been a very reasonable thing for him to have said, though the OED (as authoritative as you can get without being infallible) records the first use of "kismet" in English usage in 1847, some time after Nelson's death.

Jury appears to still be out. Nelson fans may enjoy the novel "Losing Nelson" by Barry Unsworth. I really enjoyed it.

It comes down to this: Hillary Clintonis genuinely evil by any traditional definition of the term, almost cartoony in her malevolence and spite. The way she treats those she considers beneath her, such as the Secret Service agents committed by oath to protect her, is tip of the iceberg stuff. Imagine her as POTUS.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, may be crass, boorish and grandiose, but for all that he's genuine. He really believes in America--almost as much as he believes in himself. He may not be a paragon of Christian virtue, but he isn't evil. He means well.

The numbers I have seen do not support that. I have linked to immigration related sites that say since Obama took office he is abusing the asylum laws to let in millions of third world welfare drones. We are now letting in 2M new Democrat voters a year. 200,000 of those are muzzies from the ME and he is increasing those.

Our insane asylum laws need to a complete rewrite. And remember back to that German couple who applied for asylum so they could home school their children which Germany does not allow. They were denied and were being deported up until the outcry nationwide made them change their mind. It was going to cost the Democrats some votes.

Trivia from the Napoleonic Wars.

When the French invaded Spain, they proposed they did so to raise Spain out of the tyranny of the Dark Ages into a new Age of Enlightenment. One Spaniard who bought this line of Hillaryous crap was a young police commander, Fernando Sor. When the whole enlightenment thing didn't work out, Sor found it advisable to emmigrate to France not wishing to discuss his past. He moved to Paris where he developed his avocation to a profession. He became a great composer, teacher, and virtuoso of the classical guitar.

They're supposed to be "advisors" showing the locals what to do. They're not supposed to be in combat. Forward artillery control is combat by any reasonable measure.

398 Zebroid is the generic name for all zebra hybrids. The different hybrids are generally named using a portmanteau of the sire's name and the dam's name. There is generally no distinction made as to which zebra species is used. Many times when zebras are crossbred, they develop some form of dwarfism. Breeding of different branches of the equine family, which does not occur in the wild, generally results in infertile offspring. The combination of sire and dam also affects the offspring phenotype.

A zorse is the offspring of a zebra stallion and a horse mare. This cross is also called a zebrula, zebrule, or zebra mule. The rarer reverse pairing is sometimes called a horbra, hebra, zebrinny or zebret. Like most other animal hybrids, the zorse is sterile.

A zony is the offspring of a zebra stallion and a pony mare. Medium-sized pony mares are preferred to produce riding zonies, but zebras have been crossed with smaller pony breeds such as the Shetland, resulting in so-called "Zetlands".

You may now continue.

403 There seems to be some question as to the wording of the message Nelson sent: He ordered, "England requires", but the officer sending the message ( by flags, of course ) didn't have the right flags immediately available--so he changed the message to "England expects..."

now the message would be, "The Caliphate-to-be feels that every xe or xir should maintain their balance"

408 On "Kiss me, Hardy":

The late Auberon Waugh, during his compulsory military service, managed somehow to shoot himself completely through the chest while handling a light machine gun.

As he lay there waiting for the medics, he turned to his sergeant standing nearby, and, doing his best Nelson impression, murmured "Kiss me, Chudleigh".

Waugh recovered from his wounds. But as he said, the sergeant had failed to appreciate the historical allusion, and "thereafter regarded me with extreme caution".

410 380 The older Doctor Who shows always looked like they were produced a decade before they actually aired. The sets and special effects were fairly dire, though they had that "don't judge us until you have seen our budget" look.
They made up for that with really well-written stories.

If you want to see a modern-day equivalent of this, check out 'Occupied', a Norwegian TV series available on Netflix. It looks like it was filmed on old-school videotape, and you think it's going to be cheesy as heck, but the acting is good and the story is very well written.

First Doctor was a serious chap.

Fifth Doctor was a Preppie in tennis attire.

Zebroid is the generic name for all zebra hybrids.

459 There are a few over-arching plot points in the Dr. Who universe, usually the recurring villains like the Master or the Daleks.

Story-wise, we get into a bit of a wicket. The old shows were about 30 minutes long and it would take a couple or four episodes to tell that one story. Only rarely would there be a longer story arc.

Since the reboot with Eccleston each show is an hour long and sometimes the whole over-arching story arc is not resolved in even one season.

Start with the modern reboot, with the 9th Doctor. If you like that, continue on with the next few Doctors. Each season has stand alone episodes, as well as interconnected arcs. If you like it all, then try to track down the earlier years, especially with Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor.

Not really. But watching it in order helps with keeping up with companions who come and go. The first few seasons the pacing can be really slow. Also a number of Hartnell and Troughton episodes the tapes were wiped (with a cloth) clean to be reused to film other shows so a number of episodes don't exist any more. Yes, I was a big Who nerd.

469 Not accepted by everyone edition. Levels of civilization. Tribal, or everything not mandatory is forbidden. Military is not effective against higher levels. Barbarian: strong individuals win followers, losers do not. Aggressive against tribal societies. Military effective against lower levels, more like a shotgun blast than like effective teamwork. Civilian: have the ability (if necessary) to work as a team. Can do it both as civilians or as soldiers. Looks similar to a tribal society to barbarians (they take orders). Goes thru barbarians as effectively as barbarians go thru tribes (machine guns with artillery). Progressive: can only arise if protected by a civilian level society. Talk tough but more often cowardly (not always just mostly). Brings about the downfall of civilian societies. Likes associating with barbarians. Not really known why (by me). Higher levels: can be theorized about but not enough info to proven any assertions. Several possibilities but often end up destroyed by progressives before any potential can be proven to anyone's satisfactions.

471 Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

Through sixty-six and seven they fought the Congo war
Fingers on their triggers, knee-deep in gore
For days and nights they battled the Bantu to their knees
They killed to earn their living and to help out the Congolese

Roland the Thompson gunner...

His comrades fought beside him - Van Owen and the rest
But of all the Thompson gunners Roland was the best
So the CIA decided they wanted Roland dead
That son-of-a-bitch Van Owen blew off Roland's head

Roland the headless Thompson gunner (Time, time, time, for another peaceful war)
Norway's bravest son (But time stands still for Roland 'til he evens up the score)
They can still see his headless body stalking through the night
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun

Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun - he didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg

Roland the headless Thompson gunner...

The eternal Thompson gunner, still wandering through the night
Now it's ten years later but he still keeps up the fight
In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine and Berkeley
Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland's Thompson gun
And bought it
