There is a jihad against incorrect words and even thoughts. It is considered so horrible, that the sexualization is not big deal in comparison! How bad? Use social media to express an incorrect thought, or other wise act in a way the state deems "harms" the legally protected, and you can go to jail. I've heard of sabots being used in tank and antitank guns but never in a handgun or longarm. (In antitank guns, the idea is to increase caliber and velocity in the barrel then the sabots are discarded as the round leaves the barrel leaving a slender, high velocity projectile that can punch through armor.)

Sabots CAN keep there from being a ballistics match FWIU. Accuracy improvement? Nope. Velocity improvement? Yes. Thing is you have to shoot a smaller caliber bullet from the barrel.

Anyway, I just found out they've been set to "discontinued/limited production". Then I started getting notifications they were available at several stores I check. Then they sold out w/in like two days. Then I got another notification from GrabAGun, and it was $100 cheaper than the other places. So I couldn't help myself, I jumped on it.
Should be here this week.
Now, I get to figure out how I'm going to pay for it (lol) and then look at getting it cut to 24", threaded and the can brake put on it (already have the brake). Then I need to figure out where to get $1,000 for the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP and mounts to top it off.
But it'll be sooooo sweet when it's done.

That surprises me not at all. I used to watch C-130's practice short-field take-offs and landings at the Lockheed plant at Marietta.
I've mentioned this here in the past, I could swear that the props were reversed before they actually touched down.
I'm a bit puzzled about how they took off without assist. The Forrestal's deck is (?) 1300', but I think the minimum take-off distance for C-130 might be twice that. The 'air speed' over the deck would help, but not enough... I wouldn't think.

That was a major plot point of Stephen Hunter's first Bob Lee Swagger novel, Point of Impact. Except that it wasn't a sabot, it was a paper-patched bullet (previously fired from one of Swagger's rifles), reloaded with the paper patch and fired from a rifle with a custom, slightly oversized bore. All in order to set up Swagger as a patsy in a political assassination.

I'm a bit puzzled about how they took off without assist. The Forrestal's deck is (?) 1300', but I think the minimum take-off distance for C-130 might be twice that. The 'air speed' over the deck would help, but not enough... I wouldn't think.

They actually used a D +34 sample to try to present some good news for Hillary. D +34!
Do you really believe that 58% of voters in Arizona on November 8th will be Democrats?
That just does not happen in a red state. Hell, it doesn't even happen in the deepest of deep blue states. There is not a single state where the electorate is 58% Democrat.

I remember when I came here, joyfully, to announce my nephew's engagement to a wonderful woman and the response I got from some here was "No!!! He's ruining his life!!! It did upset me.

My best friend - a beautiful woman - had a miscarriage when she was 39 and became very depressed. A cloud is a distributed system that you have network access to. There are many different clouds. You can even just have internet access to your home computer and call that a "trivial cloud".
But most commercial clouds are not just distributed storage systems but distributed computing networks, so that you can run programs in them and the like.

You can say "give me 30 computers," and soon you have 30 computers you can use. You can say "My e-commerce site has almost no traffic at midnight, and tons at 9:00 AM," and there are ways to use, and pay for, only the number of machines that you need at any given time. It's pretty cool, really, if you're into that sort of thing.
The actual machines are in a trailer farm somewhere cheap, with plenty of power and cooling.

Well ... in the old, old days there was the same sort of deal, but only with big, hulking, single systems, and that was called "time-sharing".
Distributed systems (running efficiently) are pretty new. Probably 10 or 15 years for the good commercial applications. Actually, laying the foundations for much of distributed computing (a branch off of parallel computation) is what google's original contribution was and why they took over the search space so rapidly.

While I agree with you, unfortunately, shop-a-holics are treated as a punch line to a joke or some sort of misogyny. Far too many do not see it as an addiction, unlike gambling the rent money away, etc. Casinos do ads warning people to bet with their heads, not over it, and if you have a problem call the Gambling Hotline at XXX-XXX-XXXX. Do you see signs in Macy's warning about the dangers of getting in over your head while shopping?

I originally went through the thread to talk about the signs of someone quitting. I have a beloved niece who was the assistant to one of the County Commissioners in a nearby, largely urban county. As in trusted to represent her Commissioner in policy and operational matters. Her original commissioner left to take a higher paying private sector job and my niece was transferred to another Commissioner, who does not believe that women can handle any authority and made her into a highly paid but glorified receptionist.
Her response? She went and finished her master's degree and then went job hunting. She is now the Director of Policy for the Regional Council of Governments. More pay, higher rank, and the a**hole County Commissioner has to step warily around her.
One sign of people quitting is to have a stupid boss. If the workers are trying to improve themselves, it may mean that they are ready to leave as soon as they can. Stupid bosses want to surround themselves with less capable people. The good ones will leave as soon as they can.

Heh. I was acquainted with one of the sons of Bre-X president David Walsh, through mutual friends. Fixed a broke-down car for him (POS VW Rabbit). Drop it off at Walsh homestead, then a modest home in suburban Calgary. Kid says, "you are a geologist? My Dad needs one to go work in Indonesia. Want to meet him?" David wasn't home, nothing ever came of it. Had the stars been aligned differently, I could have been the guy that took the swan dive off the helicopter.
Former employer of mine, who knew David Walsh well, insists he was straight arrow, and that he got blindsided by Felderhof and the Filipino guy, who were in cahoots. His biggest sin was not in doing internal due diligence.

I generally agree with your sentiment. I like to physically hold my own data.
But for anyone who does use cloud services for storage, there's nothing stopping them from keeping backup copies of their own. It's people who put 100% trust in some cloud services who have problems ... but those sorts of people likely have lots of problems with lots of things.

There's also something to be said for not having all our eggs in basket-many businesses with all their data in one central location-in the event of disaster or sabotage (or Amazon waking up one morning deciding it needs to alter the terms of the deal).

As I understand it, the way to go is to build your *own* cloud, which again IMHO is basically just a RAID tower that you can build yourself and place offsite. I would imagine the trickiest part is making it bulletproof from hackers.

Just to be clear, Lackand and Kelly AFBs were separated only by a chain link fence in those days. Now, there's no "Kelly" AFB, as it's been rolled-into the Lackland AFB complex, and half of the former Kelly AFB is now a civilian logistics center.
But, I digress.
I had one of the best seats in the house to watch C-130s practicing "combat approaches" to the Kelly runway.
And yes, they had the props already changing pitch to reverse thrust before their main gear actually hit the runway. I'd say about 20 ft. AGL, you'd notice the change in sound from the engines/props, and in the time it took the prop blades to rotate pitch from thrust to reverse-thrust, the mains had kissed concrete, and the reverse thrust was already coming into effect.
At a landing speed, that ballet of prop and touchdown, likely shortened the landing roll by an airplane length, or three.
But those pilots tossed those planes around, sideslipping 'em like a Piper Cub coming into a jungle clearing. Pretty damned impressive, that.
The takeoffs were equally impressive, albeit not quite as dramatic as the landings.
But that big ol' fat lookin' Herc., seems to have some fighter DNA in it's 'luminum soul.

As I wrote earlier, no one stops anyone from backing up all the stuff they have "in the cloud". If they don't back it up I have no sympathy for them. I have no sympathy for anyone who has a hard drive crash on them and they hadn't backed their stuff up. There's no reason for anyone not to understand that they have to back up everything they think is important.
For me, I would never use cloud storage for anything. I like my stuff. It's mine and I'll keep it with me. But for certain computation jobs the easiest and cheapest method is to use cloud services. For testing and all sorts of stuff.

A friend of mine told me once that I should always hold back and gauge "his" level of emotional investment before giving 100% of my own. "How do you do that?!" I asked. As though love is a matter of shifting gears and you have the option of backing off of 4th when you're at xRPM.
Which is why it was so, so lovely that Mr. Deplorable was all in from the start.
He never even proposed, you know. We were talking on the phone one night and he said, "Later, when we're married..." I have no idea what he said after that because my brain froze.
Yeah, it was an unusual situation. He set the tone of our relationship from the beginning - affection, warmth, humor, affection, passion, humor etc etc etc. We never ever fell into that default sniping at home after a rough day.

OK, I missed when it was done but caught references after. My FIL has had at least 3 shoulder surgeries, maybe 4.
It's always worth it, but a long time to recover. I'm looking at back surgery in the near future when the wife's better insurance kicks in.

Especially, since in my own personal life, I know of marriages which have failed because the guy decided he wanted a newer, younger trophy wife. My best friend - a beautiful woman - had a miscarriage when she was 39 and became very depressed. Her husband left her and their two kids and moved to Texas to be with a woman he found online because Sue had "become such a downer."

Didn't look that close. Maybe croissants in jars? I noticed the motor mounts are just plain dumb. Wasp-waisted rubber biscuits, with one mounting plate attached to the exhaust header pipe on each head, and the other to the frame, and both with their central axis horizontal, so the dead weight of the engine puts both metal-to-rubber bonds in constant shear. And both are separated, on both ends. Can't imagine why.

That is true. There's already quite a bit of cloud-based software. My employer before I retired had ported its flagship software to the cloud. It requires some heavy-duty servers to run and while large organizations will still run their own servers, having the option to use a cloud version opens up the software to smaller businesses that otherwise wouldn't have the resources to buy and maintain the hardware and software.

It is Dyna Panhard's own engine. Since this is a "Tigre" model, it gets 50 HP from 850 cc. Not too shabby for the day. Has a 2-barrel carb, it does. One throat for each cylinder.

So, I'm not normally up this late, but in need of some assistance:
We currently heat home mainly by pellet stove ("upgrade" --?!-- from wood stove) and the damned thing just needs more and more $$$ parts every year...POS isn't descriptive enough!
We've removed electric baseboard heaters previously, don't have furnace/ductwork, and don't have Nat. Gas in the neighborhood.
Any recommendations for primary heat source that ISN'T Englander brand?
No, *moving* is (sadly!) NOT an option.

I'll share this with you - my husband came to me (in spirit, as it were) a few months after he passed. There was a paranormal sign, even, which simply amazed me since I'd never witnessed such a thing before. I could feel his presence around me, and then sort of pouring into me. I felt a tingling, and then such a rush of joy that I couldn't have been sad at that moment, no way.
He imparted something to me that I'll save for another time. The point being, there is something after death, and it's wonderful. I wanted to share that with both you and Carl. He is on the verge of something wonderful and he should not be afraid.

1 o'clock, I went up to the bar to have a beer before bed. As I'm leaving the bar at 1:45, I see a young boy, probably 12 years old although he later claimed to be 15, walking along the street towards me. He's wearing a white polo shirt, blue gym shorts and tube socks, no shoes.of course I stop him to talk. He has no apparent injuries, he's clear and coherent, keep claiming that he's fine. I tried everything I knew how to do to get his real situation out of him but I couldn't. He was polite. He also didn't belong on the street at 2 AM. He said he was just walking to a convenience store and I told him there was one right up the road, I was hoping he'd go there so as to have a fixed location.
He was obviously cold, his arms were inside his shirt, but he wouldn't tell me anything, it wouldn't let me give him a ride anywhere (probably smart, he doesn't know me), he just politely declined and deflected my concern.
What could I do? I let him walk away towards the convenience store and immediately called 911 with a full description of him and the situation, but that seems so inadequate. Again, what can I do, Hit him over the head and drag him to the police station or something? I don't know. And it's bothering me. A lot.

From what I remember of it, there were no parts that were identifiably derived from the Messerschmidt aircraft line. I believe Willy started out from square One after the war building these scooter cars. It had a 2-stroke engine, and reverse was obtained by stopping the engine, and starting it up backwards, with a reverse starter. The car I got to drive had a non-working reverse, so you stuck a leg out, and pushed.
I remember working a 2-stroke Villiers engine on an English lawn mower, and with the timing set just right, you could make it oscillate - half a turn clockwise, pop!, half a turn counterclockwise, pop!, and on and on. About a pop and a half per second. Would sit and do that all day.

I will say this, DPW - God's imagination is much greater than mine. Back in the winter of 1995, I threw myself into a Swedish snowbank at midnight, sobbing, thinking that I could never be happy again. I was 40 and there was nothing but misery as far as the eye could see.
Needless to say, many adventures ensued that I never could have foreseen, and in the end I had many, many good times. Then I was reunited with Mr. Deplorable, who was my first love ("the one who got away"), after being out of touch for over 25 years. God gave us eight years of bliss (interspersed with some strain, of course, since he was caring for 3 teens and dealing with divorce from his crazy ex).
Point being, you have no idea what might be coming your way. You just need to keep the door open to possibility, that's all.

If any parts were leftovers from the Me262 program, they weren't marked as such. But then they wouldn't, would they? Car was light; tube frame, plastic body, plastic canopy. I'd say Willy used his aircraft-building expertise to good effect when he built the cars.

My Blood was everywhere. People were freaking out cuz at first I thought it was just water. When I realized it was blood, I just kinda thought, Oh great I'm bleeding. The back of my BDU's were soaked in it.
Medivaced to the Hospital. Was back at my unit 2 hours later with 2 whole stitches in my head. At least I got off KP for three days with light duty.

*** Bro is right.I once led a rescue team to an HS125 (corporate jet) that had crashed in the fog. Seeing the wreckage lying there was painful. So much ugly out of such beauty.
No, no one died in the crash. But one of the passengers suffered a heart attack afterward. He survived.

I was watching airplanes attempt to land at Houston Hobby. This one radioed in and made the approach. Suddenly, it was like the sound of the engines had been cut off with a pair of scissors. I was the only one who knew where it was. Police had me go with them to find it. Miserable day.

I always seem to live and work in the flight paths of airports. San Diego and now IAD. I do always look up, even though I'm not an aficianado.
I worked in the building at the foot of the runway in San Diego. Watch a DHL plane land 2 days after 9/11. Those were the only flights operating, passenger flights were still grounded.
Oddly quiet for a few days.
