Posted by: Njconservative at October 19, 2016 10:38 PM (HdBzL)

409 Let's reward a reasonably fair effort with some reasonably effusive praise.

Jim ... go back and watch how many times she throws out a 30-60 second statement ... and then Wallace goes to the next question.

Very effective.

Then again ... if given 30-60 seconds ... this ...

arguing with a guy who is so woefully unprepared and lacks the will to squash both of them like the parasites they are.

612 General observation: there seems to be a lot of Monday-morning quarterbacking here, regarding Trump's seeming inability to land a zinger retort to some of Hillary's babble and lies.

Look, there are a hundred more very sharp minds at work here at the HQ, and some are very focused upon certain areas of concern, and have all the witty zingers memorized. Donald Trump is just one guy. He has to be up to speed on the whole ball of wax, so don't fault him if he doesn't pop up with the zinger you think he should have.

The French have a term for it, and I think Ace can confirm it, "staircase wit", which is that snappy comeback that comes to you 5 minutes too late, as you descend the staircase from the meeting where you really needed it. We are seeing that here, in hindsight.

683 There is a huge difference between responding in relative privacy and doing it on stage, where your first priority is "Don't screw this up" and you're worried about your own points, nevermind your opponents'.

If you haven't had to get up and debate an issue in front of a crowd, you probably don't get it. Having to do so in college gave me a fair idea of (1) what it's like (2) makes me think about how much worse it is in front of the bright lights, cameras, and tens of millions of viewers while dealing with an opponent who may or may not be colluding with the moderator.

Posted by: Locarno at October 19, 2016 11:17 PM (HhYvn)

684 and yeah I know that can be trained. I'm not saying it has to be a natural ability. But I just want to read about the topic, the ability to keep a high level of cognitive ability in a fight. Nerve, steel.

I read a book called "Nerve" about the brain in high-stress situations. Pretty interesting. One interesting thing is that adrenaline shunts blood *AWAY* from higher cognitive parts of the brain, to push blood to absolutely-vital sympathetic nervous system parts and fight-or-flight instinct parts.

People really do become blood simple in a fight. When cops give very very different accounts of a shooting, they're not lying (usually) -- it's just that their brains were so drenched in adrenaline their perceptions were altered (tunnel vision, time compression, and for some reason people stop HEARING in high stress situations) and their memory function went to shit too.

Anyway, just wondering if you've read a nonfiction book about keeping one's wits in a battle. Case studies, that sort of thing.

687 If you haven't had to get up and debate an issue in front of a crowd, you probably don't get it. Having to do so in college gave me a fair idea of (1) what it's like (2) makes me think about how much worse it is in front of the bright lights, cameras, and tens of millions of viewers while dealing with an opponent who may or may not be colluding with the moderator.

I have ... and I did. And I graduated college too.

He's not prepared.

688 Oh bullshit my ass.

Go back and look at the threads. Numerous posters asking "What about 2000" ... in real time. Numerous posters asking "What about the Uranium" ... in real time.

I'll start pulling the quotes ... along with time stamps synched to the debate ... if you'd like.

Posted by: ScoggDog at October 19, 2016 11:05 PM (fiGNd)

Which is exactly my point! You have a hundred or more minds at work here, and of that hundred, a few will have the perfect rejoinder to a certain question, but none will have the perfect rejoinder to all the questions. If you think Trump should have a prefect rejoinder to all of them, it's an unrealistic expectation.

And really, if he did pop a zinger every time, he'd come across as a smart-ass. Got to strike a balance.

And for the record, my original remark on this was not a dig at you, or anyone else here. That's why I prefaced it, "general observation".

Look - I'm voting for Trump. But he flat-ass can't debate. He sucks at it.

I agree.

He's a shitty debater. And it's hard to watch. He pisses me off.

I agree.

Because he should do better. No reason not too.

Disagree. People are tired of smooth talking lawyers. I type and write pretty well. I stutter a bit when I speak.

701 I was shouting that he should have mentioned 2000.

But 2000 also maybe not a great example of "rigging" if only because the D's didn't actually win. But it IS a good example of not accepting a loss... which if you read Scott Adams and understand "persuasion", it could pair him in people's minds with a loser - Al Gore. And from a persuasion perspective, he doesn't want to be paired in people's minds with a loser!

All he's trying to demonstrate is the straight spine of a leader. This business about "not being prepared" is ridiculous. He's walking a tightrope.

I was also promised - GUARANTEED - by some real smarties here and elsewhere - that he would run as a liberal in the mold of Hillary Clinton. Tonight in front of the world, he hammered Roe v Wade, an unabashed 2nd Amendment, illegal immigration, not to mention the corruption of his opponent. Most considered third rails by our so-called "conservative" candidates during the General.

Not so much. And if your reply to Hillary ... similar to so many posts starting around number 675 in Debate Thread Two ... referred to her defense of the rapist of a 12 year old victim ... I wouldn't give two shits if you stuttered or not.

You know ... sometimes ... the crowd really is right.

There is no way he is Secret Service. If you freeze up on stage - a Secret Service guy isn't going to walk over to you and say "Keep Talking" like he did - when she froze up at a campaign stop. She hates the SS and the feeling is mutual - they'd let her fall flat on her face on stage while quietly laughing at her before going over to drag her to her van and toss her in.

707 Surprise of the night... Trump winning on abortion while managing to avoid alienating too many voters from either camp

Posted by: Just Sayin' at October 20, 2016 12:58 AM (+rQ5f)

708 Just a little anecdotal evidence of Trump probably taking Michigan, I swear this is a true story.

My son stopped at a local pub after work a little after 4:00 this afternoon. There were 4 men at the bar and one asked another guy if he intended on watching the debate tonight. He answered "no my mind is already made up, I'm voting for Hillary Clinton". The man sitting next to him got up and punched the guy smack in the face, and the Hillary guy fell on the floor. the other 2 guys not in the fight yet jumped up and started stomping on the Hillary fan.

At this point (apparently), the bar tender came around the bar and broke up the scrum. When he had our Clinton guy standing up he marched him to the door and threw him out yelling "you get out and stay out, I don't want no Hillary voters in my bar"

I believe this story as my son would not lie about a thing like this. LOL.

710 Ace:

Grossman's books have already been suggested upthread. I have a corollary suggestion for you. It is called "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker.

It is available as an audiobook, as is "On Combat", Grossman's book.

I love audiobooks; it is a luxury to have a book read to me right from my iphone as I do other tasks.

And as long as you are getting put some knowledge, check out "The Creature from Jekyll Island". Guaranteed you will never look at the news, or the world, the same again after taking in that book.

Posted by: Mongerel at October 20, 2016 07:12 AM (eHMbN)

711 Ace: Seconding "Gift of Fear"as a good read for anyone interested in personal safety and avoiding dangerous situations by overcoming ingrained social training. There's also a controversial argument that certain aspects of sociopathy (i.e.. resistance to arousal - not the entire sociopathic suite) are useful in crisis situations; interestingly some of the same pathways are implicated in susceptibility to PTSD.

Posted by: Svejk at October 20, 2016 07:38 AM (e3qhC)

712 616 and others: I agree in that Trump wasn't as witty as he had to be tonight. Given the risks, I think he kept things down to a reasonable level. He can't and shouldn't try to jump over every single Hillary lie, especially if the facts didn't immediately come to mind. He couldn't afford a Candy Crowley moment.

I've actually done a debate in front of other people. My opponents were a student union VP and a much more experienced leftwing activist. I still had to take a bathroom break just to get my head back together, but came back and crushed pretty well. At this level, if you can't stand up and challenge the other guy even under klieg lights, you're done. Trump stood up well in the GOP primary debates: I'd have loved it if he prepared more against Hillary. But things are what they are.
