Mid-Morning Open Thread [CBD]
Something a bit different....courtesy of Niedermeyer's Dead Horse
An offering for your mid-morning art posts. He isn't an old master, but I watched a PBS special about him several months ago and was enchanted by his bizarre, purposeful creations.
His name is Emery Blagdon and he was just a crazy old man who twiddled with junk in his shed. The PBS story about him, and about the fortuitous saving of his creations, is fascinating, and I'm happy to see it's coming on again soon.
Here's a video of his 'Healing Machine' and various other works. It's about 3 min in where the art appears and about 7:30 in when his paintings appear.
Stick around until the 10:45 mark where you see what they saw when they opened the door to a ratty old shed somewhere in rural Nebraska.

No excuses for what Polanski did to that girl, but there were some mitigating circumstances in his life (being a child Holocaust survivor, having had his pregnant wife and friends butchered by the Manson Family in his home, etc.) that one could point to as a reason for not giving him as harsh a sentence as he might otherwise have deserved for that rape. There is also the fact that Polanski has publicly apologized to his victim, and she has forgiven him and does not want him to be further prosecuted.
IOW, Polanski actually showed some remorse for his actions, and he hasn't (as far as I'm aware) been serially raping/assaulting girls/women over decades, and then denying it while trashing them in public as floozies, bimbos, liars, crazies, etc., the way Clinton has.

I don't think so either. And I don't get these polls. The polls and the media say the Harpy is ahead. But if you go out online and visit forums and comment threads all over the web, you'll see that almost NOBODY likes her. Nobody is enthusiastic about voting for her. I'm not counting the few obvious paid DNC shills, who you can spot a mile away.
I live in NYS, and I've seen exactly ONE lawn sign for the night hag. One. And zero bumper stickers. I don't see a ton of Trump lawn signs, but I do see a handful on my way to work.Nobody is attending medusa's rallies. Trump gets football stadiums full.
None of this is making sense. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but I'm actually starting to believe the folks who say these polls are bogus, and that we're just being set up for a fake election.
The wikileaks emails sealed that notion for me. The fraud and corruption at all levels is a very real thing. I really believe that a Trump will win the vote--but it will be reversed by Democratic fraud. We will never be told the real count.

"Rough estimate" is not any level of precision necessary for how divided the nation is, and has been for a long time. I mean, look at Bush v. Gore. That was close, and that was 16 years ago.
And as I said, best case scenario. Even the honest pollsters (and I assume without evidence that there are a few) have an uphill battle trying to get accurate and meaningful data, especially in a Black Swan kind of cycle like this.
So it's not that I don't believe the polls per se-- there's just too much noise to get accurate and precise numbers. If it's 52-48 with a MOE of 20 (for example), okay, what do you take away from it? That it's probably close, but actually may not be.
Now, again, candidates with huge rallies can lose, it's all about turnout. But I have to expect rally-goers to be more likely to vote and to hopefully get their friends to, whereas Hilllary-supporters, being less enthused, I assume will have a lower percentage.
And and and and one final thought and and
The Brexit polling said it was gonna be close, but Remain would win. So of course Leave won, narrowly. I'm too lazy to look at the actual numbers, but I'm thinking the U.K., being a smaller nation, might be easier to poll with greater accuracy.
So, yeah. None of this says Trump will win, just that he yet could.

Party may have to move to pick up majority. Is what it is, I'm a realist. Would prefer to shift power to states or lessen fed power.

I'm not a fan, but I'll answer anyway. The answer is this - who knows what will happen. This is going to take a while to sort out. Someone may come along who can better capture and articulate the message.
But I think a lot of it would depend on how the GOP responds. If Ryan and the GOP became a true opposition party, then I think many Trump fans would fall in line.
If Ryan tries to strike deals with Hillary, then I think Trump's fans will continue to be a very voiceful group looking for someone to lead them.

As the wages/earnings of the people really begin to diverge, the political consequences are going to become more dire. This is what Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are trading on. They can't fix the real problem, but will be happy to gin up class warfare and create more friction to get political power.

Some of the Podesta e-mails are interesting. I've only seen a small sample of them. But I think that the real dirt would be e-mail dumps from Abedin, Mills, Mook and (of course) Hillary Herself.
I can see why they released Podesta first and are doing the rolling leaks release. But real explosive stuff (if any) is probably going to be found only if the hack extends through Hillary's inner coterie and those e-mails are released with enough time to digest before the election.

I think most conservatives do acknowledge that the majority of Americans don't support our ideology. I'm guessing the majority of Americans probably didn't support independence back in the day either. Of course, one has to wonder, if we knew throwing out the crown and replacing it with a more powerful and invasive crown would be the result, maybe the minority that led the rebellion would have reconsidered too.

It's the same with the LA Times also showing a tied race (or Trump winning), so even if you want to take the "polls" at face value, two national polling outfits are showing this as a tied race.
I'm in the Trump will probably lose narrowly, but the idea that this thing is over and Hillary is a lock to win is incredibly deceiving and is the media trying to dispirit Trump supporters so they won;t turn out.

often the drive has nothing to do with "art", like this guy's healing machines. it's a higher purpose, love, god's love, etc. i think the watts towers were driven by something like that.
pbs had a show on a guy who one day just started making topiary sculpts on his property. became a life occupation ending with a beautiful park and his neighbors following suit. very nice.

ha .. exactly. The emphasis is on heritage, culture ... not race. Even Judaism is no longer much about race, as I understand it. And Christianity about 2000 years ago said there is no longer Jew or Gentile ... all one. And note it is only whites that are not allowed to like their race. Black (African) pride, La Raza, sharia law ... those are called proud peoples.
The left insists on calling it "white nationalism" ... but only a few of even the alt-right talk about a place for their race (like others want theirs). America is about a nation with a constitution that puts man and his liberty above the king or pope, and limits the federal government.
Hillary's shadow government has undone that. Centralized power is the problem. 18% approve of congress, less than that trust state coordinated media. The vast majority is still on the side of freedom.

-Hillary insisting on traveling w/Huma when visiting US embassies instead of with the ambassador
-Huma insisting on short speeches, seats and other physical accommodations when making public appearances *way back in 2009*
...that Hillary has probably been ill/physicall compromised for her entire time as SoS, leaving most of the day to day work primarily to Huma.

I can't answer the first question because I am not a fan of Donald Trump. Of course I will vote for him, since he is the only candidate with a chance of beating your darling idol Hillary. (If you can assume that everyone voting for Trump admires and adores him, I will assume you admire and adore her.)

I don't have an ideology. I have a philosophy. If you don't know the difference, you might try reading Marx, especially The Poverty of Philosophy.
To put it in a nutshell, I actually believe that Truth and objective reality exist. I am not a post-modernist, neo-Marxist, and subjectivist. I do not believe there is a bourgeois "truth" and a proletarian "truth," a black "truth" and a white "truth," a German physics and a Jewish physics. I do not believe that "truth is whatever serves the Party," that 2+2=5 on Tuesday and =43 on Friday, depending on the Narrative.
IOW, I am not a leftist. I am a Contra, a running dog of reaction.
