Mid-Morning Open Thread [CBD]

Something a bit different....courtesy of Niedermeyer's Dead Horse

Emery Blagdon.jpg

Good morning.

An offering for your mid-morning art posts. He isn't an old master, but I watched a PBS special about him several months ago and was enchanted by his bizarre, purposeful creations.

His name is Emery Blagdon and he was just a crazy old man who twiddled with junk in his shed. The PBS story about him, and about the fortuitous saving of his creations, is fascinating, and I'm happy to see it's coming on again soon.

Here's a video of his 'Healing Machine' and various other works. It's about 3 min in where the art appears and about 7:30 in when his paintings appear.

Stick around until the 10:45 mark where you see what they saw when they opened the door to a ratty old shed somewhere in rural Nebraska.

8 Here is the latest letter from my liberal friend, explaining why it is OK to lie to the rubes to be elected; offered without further comment for your entertainment:

"WikiHillary For President" - Thomas Friedman - October 19, 2016

Finally, a rational and sane understanding of why Hillary, or WikiHillary should be president. Every successful leader, whether in government or the private sector, must often hold a public and a private position. This is necessary in order to get a sense of buy-in and cooperation from diverse interest groups. Hillary's "dream" of a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders...", is just that. A dream that can only be realized by having strong immigration reform, safeguards for those negatively affected by open trade deals, and an eye toward a sustainable clean energy policy. WikiHillary looks at the world as a global community, interdependent and interlocked, with most nations striving to bring people out of poverty, cure disease, have equality for all genders, races and religions, and live in peace. These are the issues WikiHillary has been fighting for her entire adult life, and the reasons she should and will be our next president.

A corrupt, Democrat party machine, over-zealous, corrupt sherrif's deputies who only got paid based on the fines they collected, vote fraud, and Democrats shooting a black man who wanted to vote.

The more things change...

(BTW, the only evidence in the town that it happened is a street possibly named for one of the veterans who helped throw out the machine. Not even the town/county's history museum mentions it.)

90 There's got to be more to that tale, or is Rubio that much of a .... well, won't go there before noon.

There's only three explanations that I can see:

- Little Marco is trying to "act presidential," which in this case means stabbing his party's candidate in the back;

- Little Marco has some secrets of his own and is deathly afraid they'll come out;

- Little Marco is, as he has always been, a tight-pantied, snotty, prissy little bitch who's still sulking that Teh Donald cleaned his clock and is being his usual passive-aggressive self, hoping the MFM will do the dirty work of shafting Trump.

Or D - All of the above.

126 "We" have always known Hillary as a corrupt lying hag. The left knows as well, like when they have a conference explaining that Obamacare is intended to destroy private insurance, to usher in "single payer", government health care for all.

They are perfectly willing to lie and watch the middle class suffer through their schemes ... so they can get their dreamy Utopia. The "top men" like Gruber are malicious unAmerican pricks, and those in their audience want to be told how superior their thinking is, compared to the "average American" (the "low life" Jonese next door, whom they are desperate to rise above).

But Wikileaks reveals Hillary admitting to her duplicity directly. And calling Latinos and Bernie supporters bad names ... she won't represent them, she doesn't like them. Trump can point out ... "You have a private policy you tell Goldman Sachs, and a public policy where you lie to the public. You say that openly to the elite that own you".

Not that I really want to defend Polanski, but as far as I know, he only raped one person.

No excuses for what Polanski did to that girl, but there were some mitigating circumstances in his life (being a child Holocaust survivor, having had his pregnant wife and friends butchered by the Manson Family in his home, etc.) that one could point to as a reason for not giving him as harsh a sentence as he might otherwise have deserved for that rape. There is also the fact that Polanski has publicly apologized to his victim, and she has forgiven him and does not want him to be further prosecuted.

IOW, Polanski actually showed some remorse for his actions, and he hasn't (as far as I'm aware) been serially raping/assaulting girls/women over decades, and then denying it while trashing them in public as floozies, bimbos, liars, crazies, etc., the way Clinton has.

I don't think so either. And I don't get these polls. The polls and the media say the Harpy is ahead. But if you go out online and visit forums and comment threads all over the web, you'll see that almost NOBODY likes her. Nobody is enthusiastic about voting for her. I'm not counting the few obvious paid DNC shills, who you can spot a mile away.
I live in NYS, and I've seen exactly ONE lawn sign for the night hag. One. And zero bumper stickers. I don't see a ton of Trump lawn signs, but I do see a handful on my way to work.Nobody is attending medusa's rallies. Trump gets football stadiums full.
None of this is making sense. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but I'm actually starting to believe the folks who say these polls are bogus, and that we're just being set up for a fake election.
The wikileaks emails sealed that notion for me. The fraud and corruption at all levels is a very real thing. I really believe that a Trump will win the vote--but it will be reversed by Democratic fraud. We will never be told the real count.

Yes and yes. There will be no "poll correction" at the end of this cycle. The MSM is all in on this one, and their "end game" role is to be a demoralization agent against the "deplorables" (that is, the MSM's readers and viewers). That means crap polls 24/7 until election day.

243 Best case scenario for the pollsters: some are doing their honest, level best, but between modern trends (landlines giving way to cellphones, call-screening, etc.), turnout models being totally in flux or unknown, the difficulty of asking decent questions vs. biased ones (and the huge percentage of known push-polls), sample methodology, and other factors I'm forgetting-- at best you get a rough estimate and can maybe track trends over time.

"Rough estimate" is not any level of precision necessary for how divided the nation is, and has been for a long time. I mean, look at Bush v. Gore. That was close, and that was 16 years ago.

And as I said, best case scenario. Even the honest pollsters (and I assume without evidence that there are a few) have an uphill battle trying to get accurate and meaningful data, especially in a Black Swan kind of cycle like this.

So it's not that I don't believe the polls per se-- there's just too much noise to get accurate and precise numbers. If it's 52-48 with a MOE of 20 (for example), okay, what do you take away from it? That it's probably close, but actually may not be.

Now, again, candidates with huge rallies can lose, it's all about turnout. But I have to expect rally-goers to be more likely to vote and to hopefully get their friends to, whereas Hilllary-supporters, being less enthused, I assume will have a lower percentage.

And and and and one final thought and and

The Brexit polling said it was gonna be close, but Remain would win. So of course Leave won, narrowly. I'm too lazy to look at the actual numbers, but I'm thinking the U.K., being a smaller nation, might be easier to poll with greater accuracy.

So, yeah. None of this says Trump will win, just that he yet could.

I expect Trump to lose because, well that's what conventional wisdom and History tell us, no?

But this isn't a conventional year, so I also expect the unexpected and sit back with popcorn.

Whatever happens, I have two young kids to raise and my wife and I are determined to give them the American Dream notwithstanding Hillary or DTs nonsense.

This is a year where the silent majority is fighting back in many ways. I hope I can point to it in 20 years and tell my kids stories. If not, well, I build our lives in a way that I hope we can keep on keep oning.

Nope... IMO each individual Congressional district should be its own little mini election for that electoral seat... with the Electoral votes for the Senators going to whoever wins the State...

If you allow Calif to decide it can allocate ALL its electors the way it does... the city vote outweighs the rest of the State.... so OUR votes really don't count.

1/3 wanted to stay with the King...

1/3 just wanted to keep their heads down and stay out of it....

Yet that 1/3 who wanted to rebel, changed the World...

Which was one reason the Founders did not want a Democracy... did not want universal voting... because they KNEW the historic outcome of Democracies.

We are seeing that play out... we are seeing their fears be realized... as the Electorate votes for who will GIVE them more stuff...

We are watching, in real time... the Destruction of a Democracy.... BUT...

That 1/3?? The Men who want Freedom? The ones who believe as our Founders did???

305 172 Ok, I'm going to make my final sell to people for Trump. Give me a list of three reasons to vote FOR Trump and a list of three reasons to NOT to vote for Clinton.

For Trump -
1. Successful businessman - understands negotiating, taxes, economics, people
2. Not bound to the Uniparty - limited government
3. Speaks clear truths, not poll-tested blah
4. Unambiguosly pro-American, thankful for this country, her people, and the opportunities it affords

Against Clinton
1. She has become rich selling favors and access
2. She used that money to build a shadow government which has corrupted DoS, DoJ, IRS, and others
3. She is a felon, by her own words and deeds, who should have her security clearances revoked and should be permanently barred from office, at a minimum
4. Her all-consuming lust for power means she will betray any promise or oath (private lies vs public lies)

The defeat of Trump himself wouldn't be as devastating as the fact that this once great nation has elected a truly awful, evil woman to the highest office in the land.

It will be the final confirmation that, when you include Obama lovers, Hillary lovers, the big business elite and the #NeverTrumpers, the majority of people in this country are just worthless pieces of shit not worth giving the time of day to, much less helping in any way in a time of need.

I will have to acknowledge that I am an exile in my own country.

It will also be the final nail in the coffin of any possible peaceful resolution to the issues plaguing this soon to be third world shithole with a big military.

(in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences..

So if Bill Clinton was a Hindu and a complete and utter sleeaze and creep he may end up as some sort of lower animal in the next life. This is not the same thing the idea that "what goes around comes around" which may haopen in this life or may not happen until the next life

This is not intended as a criticism of anyone here.

And you can bet that if any the women Bill molested are Christian they are probably praying that "justice might roll down like water" as well as for his repentance and conversion. i don't think God is indifferent to their cries, but God's timing is not our timing.

Worldview is what it is. I know where I fall on the spectrum, and I know where I fall relative to the majority. It is what it is. Maybe I am out of touch with majority on some issues, but I'm not going to change my worldview just to agree. Either we convince others to come over or we lose elections. I'm not a fan, but I'll answer anyway. The answer is this - who knows what will happen. This is going to take a while to sort out. Someone may come along who can better capture and articulate the message.

But I think a lot of it would depend on how the GOP responds. If Ryan and the GOP became a true opposition party, then I think many Trump fans would fall in line.

If Ryan tries to strike deals with Hillary, then I think Trump's fans will continue to be a very voiceful group looking for someone to lead them.

Some of it is legitimate late-deciding. Some of it is driven by ads and such.

But regardless, the final batch of polls never quite matches the actual vote. Nor do the exit polls. Oh, sure, they're usually pretty close. But in a 50.0001 to 49.0009- ish race, a MOE of even +/-0.01 doesn't cut it.

397 Right Reverend Ms. Spoke, you bring up a nice theological point about Eastern thought. I don't think there is anything in Buddhism that suggests justice, if you define that as a judgment against the wicked, in this life is a religious goal.

Any old religion can pray for its god(s) to destroy its enemy. But despite many disclaimers and clarifications, it looks like the "Judaeo-Christian tradition" is the only one that implies/infers that bad things may happen to bad people in this world, not just "farther along," because their own wickedness brings it. Your thoughts?

Posted by: Make America Great Again

"Free Trade" is a chimera that people hold up as being "Free" and promoting "freedom". It is people (the very rich who own and drive corporations from the board room) looking for marginal advantage in terms of commodities and raw materials. Hence, Ford now moving all small vehicle manufacture and assembly to Mexico. Viva Ford!!

The result has been the purposeful de-industrialization of America for most of my life.
I didn't understand in the 1960's and 1970's as it slowly started, but it started to be very visible in the 1980's, as more cheap goods started to fill the market from China, Asia, etc.

Now, it is so obvious that even most of us dull people can see it. But, it's good for "freedom". As the wages/earnings of the people really begin to diverge, the political consequences are going to become more dire. This is what Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are trading on. They can't fix the real problem, but will be happy to gin up class warfare and create more friction to get political power.

Some of the Podesta e-mails are interesting. I've only seen a small sample of them. But I think that the real dirt would be e-mail dumps from Abedin, Mills, Mook and (of course) Hillary Herself.

I can see why they released Podesta first and are doing the rolling leaks release. But real explosive stuff (if any) is probably going to be found only if the hack extends through Hillary's inner coterie and those e-mails are released with enough time to digest before the election.

The founders made it Constitutional - they didn't make it good policy. And tariffs can make for good policy when they are the government's primary source of revenue. When tariffs are used to place one business or industry ahead of others - not so much.

But obviously, Congress has the power. This isn't the case of being unconstitutional - unlike so many things they do. Its just the case, that I'd rather Congress not interfere in the manner they do.

These broad statements are oh so Orwellian.

Trump is for strategic trade, but indeed ... "protecting American jobs" is vital. All countries practice "mercantilism" and it benefits them, especially when dealing with American multi-nationalists. Just look at who has the trade deficits.

Sanctions are one of our powerful weapons in providing for the national defense. But there are other things than a military invasion, from which most Americans would like to defend. There are freedoms and liberty we fought for, which the cultural Marxist have plotted to destroy, via their "critical theory". A nation of drones/slaves may be more efficient producers, but at what cost do we trade away our national interests to them?

"The National Question" should be at the forefront of this election. Do we want to keep America, or surrender to the globalists? Borders, or an open market, open borders hemisphere?

Union workers across the rust belt will help elect Trump. Americans don't want Hillary's private policy nightmare.

Dear Xm. Friedman
Recently, our department has completed calculations concerning that whole lifting people in the Hemisphere out of poverty thing. We have determined that we will need 83% of your shit to begin this task.
As a courtesy to you, we have already removed 83% of the value of all financial instruments in your name and instructed your employer to directly deposit 83% of your salary into our accounts on an ongoing basis. We suggest you adjust your lifestyle accordingly.
For your information, our construction crews will be at your home tomorrow at 7:30 am to begin conversion of your home into a multi-family dwelling. It is my understanding the families being housed there will be refugees from the Syrian Civil war. But not to worry, they have been fully vetted by the State Department.
On a side note, since none of those refugees have driver's licenses, you will be expected to provide suitable transportation until such time and the Department of Motor Vehicles can issue them culturally appropriate licenses.

550 "Free Trade" is a chimera that people hold up as being "Free" and promoting "freedom". It is people (the very rich who own and drive corporations from the board room) looking for marginal advantage in terms of commodities and raw materials. Hence, Ford now moving all small vehicle manufacture and assembly to Mexico. Viva Ford!!

551 "Nationalism is worse due to its emphasis on bloodlines/racial identity.
Let me guess: you're not all that fond of western civilization, either. Posted by: Mary Poppins'

ha .. exactly. The emphasis is on heritage, culture ... not race. Even Judaism is no longer much about race, as I understand it. And Christianity about 2000 years ago said there is no longer Jew or Gentile ... all one. And note it is only whites that are not allowed to like their race. Black (African) pride, La Raza, sharia law ... those are called proud peoples.

The left insists on calling it "white nationalism" ... but only a few of even the alt-right talk about a place for their race (like others want theirs). America is about a nation with a constitution that puts man and his liberty above the king or pope, and limits the federal government.

Hillary's shadow government has undone that. Centralized power is the problem. 18% approve of congress, less than that trust state coordinated media. The vast majority is still on the side of freedom.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth

American nationalism is an idea, not about race. It is the idea that people can live in ordered liberty under law, that government exists to serve the people, and the populace is not beholden to government power and authority.
That government exists to secure the inalienable rights of a free people, and that when any government becomes destructive of this purpose, it is the RIGHT of the people to abolish it and create a new one.

American nationalism is about freedom, and the value of one human life.

Yeah, based on various items that have come out as part of the Judicial Watch lawsuit, such as:
-Hillary's constant napping
-Huma wrangling aides to prep her to do basic things like make a phone call ("she's often confused")
-Huma logging in to Hillary's email account and responding on her behalf
-Hillary insisting on traveling w/Huma when visiting US embassies instead of with the ambassador
-Huma insisting on short speeches, seats and other physical accommodations when making public appearances *way back in 2009*

...that Hillary has probably been ill/physicall compromised for her entire time as SoS, leaving most of the day to day work primarily to Huma.

591 285 Honest question, if Trump loses what will be the course of action for his fans? Many commentators here really have put their emotions in support of this man. A defeat would be devestating on a personal level.

If Trump loses and that would be the Republican party's 3rd defeat in a row, would it make any of you reconsider your worldview? Will you acknowledge Americans don't support the ideology espoused on this website.

It's an honest question and would appreciate an honest answer.
Posted by: The End is Near at October 19, 2016 11:07 AM (MkA3x)
--------------------------------
I can't answer the first question because I am not a fan of Donald Trump. Of course I will vote for him, since he is the only candidate with a chance of beating your darling idol Hillary. (If you can assume that everyone voting for Trump admires and adores him, I will assume you admire and adore her.)

Short answer to the second question:
I don't have an ideology. I have a philosophy. If you don't know the difference, you might try reading Marx, especially The Poverty of Philosophy.

To put it in a nutshell, I actually believe that Truth and objective reality exist. I am not a post-modernist, neo-Marxist, and subjectivist. I do not believe there is a bourgeois "truth" and a proletarian "truth," a black "truth" and a white "truth," a German physics and a Jewish physics. I do not believe that "truth is whatever serves the Party," that 2+2=5 on Tuesday and =43 on Friday, depending on the Narrative.
IOW, I am not a leftist. I am a Contra, a running dog of reaction.

If 52% or 99% of Americans are useful idiots* like you are, so be it. I am no spring chicken and I know and understand far more about leftism than you can possibly imagine. The very notion that election losses would make me change my mind about it is shallow, fatuous --- ridiculous.

*(I'm NOT saying you have a low IQ ---I'm using the phrase only in the Leninist sense.)
