Thread below the Gardening Thread: Halloween in Academia [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

disney villain.jpg

Think Disney villains are the scariest things in the Magic Kingdom? Not according to a scholarly report from last year. Is it possible that the kind of stereotypical language in the paper quoted below had anything to do with this familiar Halloween costume debacle?

We posit that Disney's pedagogies of pleasure, which operate from the notion that escape is attainable via the pleasurable experiences offered at Disney parks, teach us how to be particular kinds of Disney subjects who escape into safe and controlled forms of pleasure - these escape fantasies offer a way for consumers to disavow the racism and white supremacy that characterize Western humanist and colonialist projects.

Looks like Halloween parties will be either (1) somber and reflective or (2) psychologically dangerous affairs on many campuses again this year. Have you ever met anyone who needed counseling after seeing a Halloween costume that perpetuates a stereotype?

Zoos are also centers of hegemonic pedagogies: Here is a horrifying example in which a boy learns that alligators have very sharp teeth. I am confident that a mother would NEVER teach her daughter that both humans and alligators have teeth, but that alligators have sharper teeth. And only male humans go "snap, snap". It's a hegemonic norm. Heh.

O.K., Twitter has some definite drawbacks. Do you consider the New Real Peer Review Twitter feed to be a good way to bring absurd peer-reviewed papers into public consciousness?

Are there any effective ways to counter the forecast that there is no end in sight for academia's leftward drift?

. . . a professoriate that shares many of the same moral and political assumptions will be less likely to scrutinize agreeable findings, less likely to pursue potentially disconfirming lines of inquiry, and ultimately produce a body of scholarship that is both less accurate and less relevant to the public it serves.

Ya think?

BTW, The mob with their pitchforks and torches is converging on Johns Hopkins. The current catechism of "sacred truths about gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation" must be repeated by the university's administration! Gender reassignment surgery MUST be promoted as the best way to treat transgender individuals! Who cares about the suicides?
(H/T Maggie's Farm)

I tried to think of a good analogy to the mob scene from Young Frankenstein, but it made the bolts in my neck hurt. Happy Halloween.

3 professors like getting their young coeds in bed, and lording over them. The sickos in academia love their make believe world, and a little tyranny to keep their status will be fine with them ... till they are confronted more directly.

the internet is already exposing them, but Hitlery might put a stop to all "wrong thinking" since those wrong ideas are not protected speech.

Just because a bunch of over-schooled naval-gazers form, and then publish something they call a journal, doesn't make it scholarly.

Scholars do studies. Even when they do them badly, they're still subject to the confines of the data. A bunch of nitwits sitting around and reading stuff, examining in and "positing" their mindthoughts does NOT make it scholarly.

51 Here's the way I see it unfolding:

With the skewed polls showing Hillary winning and the constant drumbeat of "Russian hacking", I believe they are setting the stage for declaring the election null and void if Trump wins.

I mean, how could a Trump win be legitimate when all the polls show Hillary winning? The election was obviously hacked. We need a do-over. We can't have the Russians choosing our President, can we?

But if Hillary wins and Trump cries foul, then the line will be that Trump and his supporters are dangerous demagogues who are undermining our electoral process. Vote fraud is just a right-wing myth. You can't prove anything. He should concede like a good little Republican.

Those of us who pay attention already know how pervasive Democrat vote fraud is. The Republicans never seriously challenge it. Trump will. This year, I can totally see the GOPe colluding with the Democrats to deny Trump a victory.

I expect violence one way or another no matter how this election turns out. Back in 2000, neither party had any organized street muscle. Now the Democrats have BLM all stood up and waiting for the 'go' signal. If Trump wins, I expect riots nationwide. I don't know what will happen if Trump loses and there is a widespread perception that the election was stolen, but it won't be pretty. At that point normal Americans might conclude that it is no longer possible to influence the government at the ballot box. Then all bets are off.

Hate to get all serious and stuff, but sometimes the best thing you can do for kids in a tough situation is to just let them veg out. 75 I have a bit of a different take on Halloween; it bothers me that this has become the most popular holiday, surpassing Christmas.

I am not so much concerned about the religious aspects, Christmas has virtually nothing to do with Jesus or salvation or God's love of mankind sending His own son any longer. That's not my main concern.

My main concern is why Halloween is more popular. These days getting any candy is a bigger treat than getting presents. When you're raised as a kid getting whatever you want at your fingertips whenever you want it, what's another day when you get presents? But Halloween, its a break from whole wheat tofu kale muffins and organic non-GMO free trade carrots.

A good president would take all of them that have ever been done and are still in effect, and go through them one by one to make sure they all make sense and should stay or not. I'd commission a group to go through them during the transition so I could fire through them fast first day.

I love the idea of a press conference, with Trump in front of cameras with a big VOID stamp pounding out every one of Obama's unconstitutional overreaches of power. Its one of the things the president can and should do with his office, within the limits of law.

No, don't spend one minute on "tariffs" until you've eliminated 75% of the indefensible and destructive regulation that is the biggest factor causing needless off-shoring.

And beyond the environmental idiocy that includes "equal opportunity" regulation, and pushing way back on the depredations of the shake-down (liability) industry. Make progress in these areas and things would improve so much you'll forget about tariffs.

Lobbying bans may not survive constitutionality tests. They exist, in some forms, already for various kinds of fed contractors (I was under some), but I don't know if they've been tested.

Term limits exist, they're in the constitution, and I don't want Sen. Sessions and the like forced out. In general, making up rules to fix problems that are political don't work. CA has had legislative term limits for years and, in case you hadn't heard, things are incalculably worse than before.

The problem is that legislators about to be termed out cut sweetheart deals with unions, etc. that hose the taxpayers. The other legislators vote for the corresponding legislation because one day they too will be termed out.

Much better for legislators to find out on election night that they're done, and only have a few months to work their legerdemain on the people.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at October 22, 2016 12:47 PM (SRKgf)

145 No, no "health savings accounts."

A major reason for health care finance dysfunction is the idiotic tax treatment of the topic, which started as a war-time measure in WWII. It is one of the major reasons that price signals in that area are distorted, which is one of the reasons that cost increases have been so excessive (one reason).

Treat health insurance coverage like any other sort of income or pay, when employer provided.

If you return real economics to health care, you will get rationality and competition that will render all these tweaks of artificial and ultimately destructive status quo features a vague memory.

The reality and power of markets, for some reason, are intermittently completely forgotten, even by "conservatives", when they are figuring out how to disassemble the artificial messes they confront.

Once "health care spending" can be treated, by consumers, like they handle any other sort of spending, then economic rationality will return to the sector. And it part of the University of Colorado public education system and the tuition is low.

I went to CU Boulder and wished I transferred to The School of Mines. Those students have access to the top technology in the country. They work their butt off and out of college are basically locks for 100grand starting salaries with benefits.

I'm trying to convince my nephew to go there. He is already being recruited by engineering schools across the country as a Freshman.

My daughter is looking hard at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univ in Daytona Beach FL. Aerospace Engineering. We visited this summer. I was impressed. She liked the geek factor PLUS the plethora of young, fit, international males of military bearing going for their pilots licenses.
When MythBusters did a show and proclaimed that it was impossible to make a flying airplane out of concrete, ERAU students went to work did just that. Sent the tape in to the show. It was aired and the original show was pulled.
Told her that if/when she goes and moves off campus, I get to come visit for a few weeks every February. The Daytona racetrack is right there.

She was leaving ATL to go back to school last weekend, and her dad (husband's younger bro) tells her her oil is low and needs changing, and to get it taken care of immediately and he'll pay for it.

Princess ignores him and tools it down I-75 at 80 mph and the engine seized up.

She called our son and asked him to help her, because she knew her dad would be pissed. Son told her to call her dad and deal with it.

So now the car is in an impound lot and her dad has to pay for a new engine as well.

One point that DRT made at the last debate that might have been missed is that HRC accepts outrageous amounts of money from countries that are antithetical to our own values, much less those that she says she supports.

After ignoring dear ol' Dad's good advice, since May, to have the car serviced before making that 500-mile trip one last time.

Oh and you might give some thought to thanking your lucky stars that dear ol' dumb Dad found the jug of coolant he gave you sometime before, stashed up there in your rent house's garage shelf, unused, and packed it in his truck just because.

Because limping into Waco from 30 miles out is much better than having to be towed in, as the sun starts to set on a warm Sunday evening in August.

221 The best holidays come from the Celtic/Pagan calendar, which is based on the Longest Day, Shortest Day and the two days in between.

The Catholic Church co-opted the Shortest Day as Christmas. Gather around the family hearth in the dark of the Longest Night.

Halloween is the Celtic New Year's Day, as time turns over and the crack between the Living World and the Dead World opens. Best time to talk to your dead relatives and friends. The Catholic Church made it All Soul's Day.

St Patricks Day is another and lands (nearly) opposite Halloween on the calendar. It was once a minor religious holiday in Ireland but has become a global phenomenon because of the American parades and bacchanals.

Who can be afraid of a Halloween costume? I can only understand the Lefts attack on Halloween as an attack on humor, youthful fun and Old School Paganism. But I thought that was what college was all about?

I think corporations will stop considering a 4yr degree the entry ticket to employment.

Any degree outside of the hard sciences and engineering is a 4 year exercise in goldbricking. It's an anachronistic exercise.

Think about coding; kids who start coding at 8 could legitimately be productive employees at 14 without a degree. Any college program at that point would be a waste of time and money.

I have a feeling that google (evil be upon them) will start a coding camp that will undercut all ComSci university programs before the end of the decade.

The lunar and solar rhythms are so tied to food and general welfare that, of course, they all just became standard. The totally lunar calendars do not have harvests (winter survival) as a primal purpose. Boulder terlit or rhomboid can probably explain it better, but my own take is that cultures dependent on seasonal harvests are fundamentally different than those who do not have long seasonal famines.

I think you're probably right, as to why the Egyptians and the Mesoamericans - especially - used solar calendars.

As to the lunar calendars in the eastern Med, the Jews got theirs from the Seleucid Greeks IIRC. The debate over the calendar was a violent problem under the Maccabees; the complaints over it are prevalent in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in Jubilees. But I don't know why the Greeks went with a solar-lunar hybrid.

I also don't know why the Arabs went strictly lunar, but I can guess. If your culture revolves around land trade, raiding, and hunting then you don't care as much what goods are travelling the route. You care a lot more about when the moon is bright or not, to plan for raids accordingly.

Syncretism might be too strong a word, as they merely co-opted the day, I don't think there were any actual doctrines adapted from the pagan world.

Actually, in one of Paul's epistles, he warns one of the churches about having too much regard for special 'days'. It's why Jehovah's Witnesses won't celebrate birthdays (although they are heretical for different reasons).

287 Margarita gets it right here. Seem to be two different ways of looking at a vote. One is to make it about yourself, which typically quickly leads to stuff like "I just can't look myself in the mirror ....." etc. Pretty silly, or at least mostly narcissistic and impractical.

Other way is to see your vote as just a vote (forget the fact it's meaningless in deep red or blue states, doubly meaningless in areas with lots of fraud - by definition Dem/blue areas, in reality). You have the choices you have, most of which you had little part in setting up.

I marvel at the "he/she has to earn my vote" comments here. Marvel, but don't lose sleep. Any more than I already do over the unserious, impractical, narcissistic civic culture that now substitutes for practical citizenship.

For me, it's just a preference between the X and Y that I've been presented.
It's not necessary an endorsement of either one.
(See rhomboid #287)

But if you see your vote for X as a profession of faith in X, if you see it as a moral endorsement of X, I can see how you might feel "dirty" about the Romney vote now.

I don't think you're necessarily "wrong" to feel that way, BTW --- just as I don't think it's "wrong" for, say, Chemjeff to feel dirty about voting for Trump.

303 The sad thing about Trump's plan is that Ryan and McConnell and their ilk likely oppose 95% of it. If he gets elected they will resume undermining him and sabotaging all his efforts to pass legislation like they have during his campaign

Trump has the capacity and will to drag them (figuratively) in front of the people and humiliate bulldoze them into submission. We are ready for this to happen, Kentucky is ready, the American people are ready.

McConnell, Ryan and Co. know he will make their deeds known and make them objects of LIV derision. This is why they fear him.

304 So it's come to this. Sheila Jackson Lee denounces Wikipedia as a Russian spy front:

"You know that I'm going to first of all denounce the utilization of this intrusion by Wikipedia through the Russian intrusion," Jackson Lee said in an interview with MSNBC on Friday.

Her brain seems to be experimenting some technorogical differences.

308 Holy Shith!

I looked at the detail in the recent Q poll that shows Hillary +6%. They could easily provide their demographic assumptions but don't: e.g. % college v. % non-college. e.g. % R % D % I. When a poll doesn't give this detail, I have to assume they're putting a rabbit in a hat.

But what did slip through is that this poll shows Trump getting 25% of the Black vote and Hillary only 63%!

Holy shith!

311 I'd kind of like to know who these seventeen anonymous intelligence agencies that are blaming the Russians are. Or is this just another Hillary lie?

312 Fix: the Q poll actually lumps blacks and Hispanics together, but 63% is still much lower than the 93% black / 73% hispanic vote that Obama got, and that's before you account for lower turnout

You can find a list of the 17. It means that ValJar had to make 17 phone calls, including to the Coast Guard.

"The lady doth protest too much," indeed.

just another lie . There was a graphic that showed one of the "intelligence agencies" she cited was the Dept. of Energy. It's just all bullshit. Why should she tell the truth when every major media outlet not only publishes her lies, they amplify and embellish them.

318 Are there any effective ways to counter the forecast that there is no end in sight for academia's leftward drift?

Yes, although I recognize I'm late getting to the game here.
Two things:
1. Money. Deprive them of it. Withhold grants, donations and tuition. Send the kids elsewhere.
2. Scorn. Heap it upon them. Serve it in abundance. It will cause others to pause and for a moment, rethink the whole thing. Ultimately knock down their soapbox.
