Here's that Fox story. "This is a flashing red light of potential criminality," Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, who has been briefed on the FBI interviews, told Fox News. He said "there was an alleged quid pro quo” involving Undersecretary for Management Patrick Kennedy and the FBI “over at least one classified email.” “In return for altering the classification, the possibility of additional slots for the FBI at missions overseas was discussed,” Chaffetz said. As Fox News previously reported, interviews released earlier this month, known as 302s, reveal the serious allegation that Kennedy applied pressure to subordinates to change classified email codes so they would be shielded from Congress and the public. Fox News was told as far back as August 2015 that Kennedy was running interference on Capitol Hill. But Kennedy, in his FBI interview on Dec. 21, 2015, “categorically rejected” allegations of classified code tampering.Excerpts of the actual documents below.

Going to keep re-posting this in the hope that a moron here knows someone who knows someone that can speak to Trump.
Trump's closing statement at last debate; I know that many of you do not like Hillary There are even some of you who don't like me (wait for laughter) So now I am going to do what is best for America. I, Donald J. Trump do hereby tender my resignation to the office of the Presidency of the United States. This resignation is effective immediately upon the confirmation of Justice Ginsburg's successor. Thank you, good night and God bless America! - Trump wins debate (there is no other story) - Hillary is on defense (yeah, but what about that week he is President?) - Trump wins election - Enormous pressure on that dingbat RBG to resign. - Enormous pressure on Senate to approve not only Ginsberg's conservative successor, but Scalia's as well (SCOTUS is my main concern) - Pence becomes President for six months to ten years. There is no dispute that materials on Clinton's server were classified. Some were at a low level of classification, some of them were at a very high level of classification.
Look at the lengths that the State Department is going through to try to get the FBI to declare that these e-mails are not classified. Despite the fact that information is "born" classified. And, despite the fact that information is classified based on the decision of the originating agency. That means that those SIGINT spy satellite photos that came from the NSA (IIRC) were TOP SECRET/SCI irrespective of what the State department thought. And -- irrespective of whatever the FBI thinks, right? There is absolutely no concern over the safety of the information. State Department isn't going "Oh shit -- classified information was exposed, what can we do to help?" The FBI doesn't seem to be doing that either. What seems to be happening is an ex post facto review of information to determine whether, in retrospect, some of this information was born classified and whether it can be characterized as being NOT classified. The investigation by the State Department began on a faulty premise. And -- if the FBI was involved in a quid pro quo exchange/offer regarding whether to call something classified, JUST WHO IN THE FUCKING COUNTRY CARES ABOUT THE INFORMATIONAL SECURITY OF THE INFORMATION? Don't mean to lose it, but people may have died due to Hillary's illegal conduct. No-one seems to give a shit. Posted by: Revenant at October 17, 2016 12:58 PM (3DSAh) 66
The interesting thing is that this trickle of information is getting people to think of Clinton is just corrupt as hell. Even low info people associate her with corruption and illegality. How much difference that will make who knows? But its interesting how this is getting through the stonewall by the media.

"Remarkably scandal-free"
Wrong about the Nixon comparison. The articles of impeachment drawn up back then would hardly be a footnote to what has happened the last eight years. Back then, a clownish inept FBI Director was caught clownishly trying to cover up some of Nixon's tracks. Today, an FBI Director just openly dares the country and the Congress to call him on his open, ridiculous contention that the law doesn't say what it says. Back then, the guy was humiliated and driven from office. Today ..... But Trump is icky. I mean, people with really low practical political IQs think he's racist, and stuff. What's never been explained is how classified documents got on Hillary's secret server in the first place. Word is that this couldn't have happened without human intervention to cross the Air Gap from secure to unsecure. This likely involved some combination of Huma, Cheryl and Jake, which could have been readily proven from access time stamps. If so, it'd be easy to prove and charge what were separate, serious crimes. But this never happened because the investigation was compromised from the start. We pass a "Freedom of Information Act" to provide accountability in government, and pass other laws prohibiting the deletion or destruction of any government emails or other communications. The Administration pinky-swears they will be the "most transparent Administration evah."
Then the immediately: - set up secret private servers - use pseudonyms - invoke Executive Privilege with unprecedented frequency - invoke Attorney.Client Privilege with unprecedented frequency - wipe servers with weapons-grade deletion software - destroy cellular phones with hammers - bully and threaten witnesses - target the guy who exposed them and wonder if he could be droned; and - bring us to the brink of nuclear war with Russia rather than face the music. All to get around all those acts, laws, and promises. And now that all of this is being exposed to the light of day, their proposed solution: to not engage in illegal activity? To obey the law? To keep trust with the citizenry? No, their proposed solution is to not use email, go back to using dumbphones, and to do all their communicating privately and face-to-face. Damn. Just remember about 13 hours; Hillary's aides on the Podesta e-mails were deliberately trying to conflate her e-mail sever scandal with Benghazi. That implies that they were making the political determination that the e-mail scandal could hurt her, but if they could tie it to Benghazi, it would be better for her.
For some reason, the country decided to give Hillary and Obama a pass for Benghazi. No idea why. It should have disqualified her from office, particularly if she was the "mastermind" behind the whole Libya campaign in the first place. Posted by: Revenant at October 17, 2016 01:16 PM (3DSAh) 186

If the Republicans in Congress had a single testicle between them, they'd start drawing uo articles of impeachment against potential-President Hillary Clinton RIGHT NOW and make a big fuss out of it: "If she is elected, we will impeach her 60 seconds after her swearing in."
Posted by: zombie Obviously Republicans in Congress don't have testicles, but I hear this strategy thrown around a lot and what would it really achieve? They don't have the votes, period. And Democrats feel zero pressure from their constituency to go along with it, so it's just a big public failure that would probably send Obama or Hillary's approval rating through the roof. Obviously they deserve it, but not sure how falling on the sword really achieves anything. Posted by: Maritime at October 17, 2016 01:18 PM (I2Kfz) 195

216 Vagina is Latin for sheath. Pronounced wa-gee-na. I know this for having to use it in a sentence in sophomore Latin class. Scars me to this day.
Posted by: Duke Lowell Yes. It was a fairly common term in military parlance, part of your standard equipment for battle -- gladius (sword), vagina (sheath), scutum (shield), etc. "Vagina" only ever referred to "female anatomy" much more rarely in jokey/goofing around situations. Sort of like how we have a quadrillion "slang" words in English for "penis," but most of the time they are just used as normal words: rod, knob, weiner, snake, tool, etc. People use those all the time and don't mean "penis" 99% of the time. Same for "vagina" actually meaning "sheath," and only rarely meaning, uh, vagina. Posted by: zombie at October 17, 2016 01:30 PM (jBuUi) 279

Along those lines I'll relate a funny story about Hebrew slang to you: In Hebrew, leheezdayan literally means "to arm oneself", but it is only used in Israel for its slang meaning, which is "to fuck yourself". I forget which Prime Minister (maybe it was Shamir) spoke very elegant and exact Hebrew and he made a comment that the Palestinians were arming themselves ... for something. But he used the literal verb, "leheezdayan", which meant "fuck yourself" to every Israeli, and that was the headline of the Israeli papers - "Shamir(?) says 'Palestinians are fucking themselves'". They are definitely attempting to get voters to peel away from Trump. Not for Hillary, just not vote for president or write someone in. They're trying to make him so toxic that people who hate Hillary just decide there's no good choice and avoid the presidential vote entirely. For another, the idea that our battleships at Pearl were somehow expendable is...I don't know what that is. Throwing away the greatest warships in our fleet as a part of some convoluted gambit? Really? Lastly, people nowadays act as if victory over the Germans, Japanese and (yes) Italians was a preordained conclusion. Far from it. Until Midway and Stalingrad, we were losing badly. Fingering someone with no connection to anything, and having him perp-walked for the TV cameras (multiple unbelievable non-standard elements just there) to appease the howling anti-American MidEast mob was as vile a thing as this regime has done. Generations dedicated their lives, the country in the main committed itself and did whatever it could to promote an open society and western style freedoms (incl. expression) for decades of the Cold War. Throwing the video maker to the wolves was as repugnant, and damaging, a thing as I have seen done in my lifetime. Kinda. Intelligence had mostly cracked the Japanese code at that point, so they had chatter about an attack, but they didn't have anything certain or solid. It was mostly just "we need to hit them" and possibly Hawaii. As you can see in the film Tora Tora Tora, they feared an attack and believed one might be coming, but didn't know when, so they upped security and built a radar station. Its not like FDR knew and hid it so we'd get into war, though. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 17, 2016 01:39 PM (39g3+) 339

But, remember, Nixon threatening to interfere in an FBI investigation and discussing using the IRS against his political opponents is the worst thing ever in the history of ever.
Here. I'm going to take my new theory out for a spin. Obamacare is to blame for Trump. I sum up. The American public retains this quaint idea that we are citizens and not subjects and, thus, if we don't like how legislators are legislating, we vote them out and vote in new people to work for us. So. When all the Obamacare shenanigans were going on (and doesn't that seem like a lifetime ago), the American public was told hey if you don't want Obamacare, you have to elect Scott Brown to stop it. Massachusetts stepped up and Scott Brown got elected and Obamacare got rammed through anyway. But, hey, SCOTUS will stop this because it's blatantly unconstitutional and then Justice Roberts wrote a scathing opinion overturning the decision that said, so, in accordance with the foregoing reasons, Obamacare is upheld. And those on the Right were all the actual fucking fuck. But hey fine whatever, we'll give the Republicans the House and no, no, no, that's not enough, we need the Senate too so here and we'll throw out pretty much all the state level Dems too and this will stop everything. Nope. And here we are. Because the American people played by the rules and then realized that made them suckers so they said fine, you want to Calvinball it? We'll put up someone whose entire career depends on Calvinballing the hell out of everything. So, in conclusion, fuck Harry Reid. With the latest assault on the ballot by the obama-appointed judge in Fl, it's an obvious tee-up to contest the election there, if Trump wins. He is demanding that election officials notify all those who mail-in their ballots if their signature doesn't match the signature on file before 5 pm 11/7. That is next to impossible, imo. Let's not beclown ourselves over Pearl Harbor.
There was no specific knowledge or expectation of the sort of attack that happened. Pearl was issued a "war warning" prior to the attack. Up until Dec. 6, Pearl was on an enhanced readiness footing that could have materially affected the outcome the next morning (air defense/response readiness, readiness condition aboard ships, such things as anti-torpedo voids being hatch-secured, etc.). That decision was on Gen. Short and Admiral Kimmel. Philippines attack was expected (and occurred). Separate scandal there on MacArthur's ledger (and others - ck out the decisions that left Caviti so vulnerable to air attack and nearly had the sub force wiped out at the dock). Side-note: the actual planners of the attack (Genda and Fuchida) appeared to have directly defied their orders - from Yamamato - by giving the attack plan far higher priority to carriers than he directed it have. Oh good, let's refight WWII! Something I can enjoy.
I say no single "turning point". No Japanese offensive operations of any significance after Midway - for obvious reasons. So that's one kind of turning point. But Guadalcanal - actually the entirety of the Solomons campaign of which it was the start - was another turning point. The meat-grinder that ruined both Japanese army and navy aviation in a way that could not be repaired, given resource limitations and Japan's lack of preparation for a war of attrition. So, in my self-acknowledged role as arbiter of arcane and ultimately pointless WWII disputes, I declare troyriser and redc co-winners of this mornings match. 343 It's hard to determine motive, but there is ample evidence FDR had plenty of warning regarding the danger of having all those ships in Pearl harbor, and the warnings came from his own military regarding a Japanese attack.
----------- The White House reaction to the Imperial Japanese Fleet doing a major sortie was to fall into the Standard Plan, which was to anticipate attacks on the Philippines, Wake, and other Pacific territories. Yamamoto of course did not use the Standard Plan, which resulted in a nasty and unplanned-for surprise at Pearl Harbor. Just to be on the safe side, two carrier groups had been ordered out from Pearl to scout for the Japanese Fleet, which was maintaining radio silence as ordered. If Nagumo's fleet had been spotted by carrier aircraft or surface vessels, it would have been Red Alert time! It is also a misnomer that Midway was the turning point in the Asian-Pacific Theater. Midway was a reprieve and a severe check to the Imperial Navy. (The Imperial Army was in no way affected.) The real turning point was the fight over Guadalcanal. The US Navy fought 5 surface engagements and 2 carrier battles against the Imperial Navy to prevent it from sending enough reinforcements and supplies to the island to enable the Imperial Army divisions there to overrun Henderson Field. Both sides took their lumps, but Japan was permanently forced into the defensive in the Pacific side of things. Posted by: exdem13 at October 17, 2016 02:00 PM (ry4ab) 447

Posted by: redc1c4 at October 17, 2016 01:54 PM (r3GNW) Your point is well taken, as is his. If we lose Midway, we would have lost the ability to advance further East, no refueling stations, etc. Also, Midway destroyed the Jap navy and they never recovered the carriers they lost at Midway. So at the time of Midway, it WAS the most important battle in the Pacific, if we lost Midway, we would not have been at Guadalcanal when we were. Thank God for the code breakers, or we would have gotten our ass beat. Also, the Navy pretty much claims Midway as the deciding battle for the above reasons. But people need to keep in mind that we could have very easily lost Midway. Even with the advantage of surprise, the first couple of runs at the Japanese carriers were duds and the Japs did get runs at ours. If things moved an inch this way or that it could have easily seen our carriers sunk - a couple of lucky hits and everything is different.

we were actually lucky the Japanese sank all those ships in 40 feet of water rather than the open sea. Ask the Prince of Wales and the Repulse.
It would be interesting to wargame how the Pacific would have played out had the Japanese waited for us to come to them. Suspect we would have seriously underestimated them in the first battles. Posted by: Buzzsaw90 at October 17, 2016 02:15 PM (h/uSM) 497
@371 If .... IF Hitler hadnt invaded The Soviet Union, the world would be a much much different place than it is today.
----------------------- Not really. Stalin would have attacked Nazi Germany eventually. People forget it these days because we've kind of whitewashed it by lumping the Soviets into the "good guy" Allies, but the Soviets were busy invading their neighbors prior to the German invasion. And all indications are that Stalin was planning on eventually invading Germany as well. Posted by: junior at October 17, 2016 02:15 PM (amCAe) 498
Japan's GDP in WWII was roughly the same as Italy's. The loss of four fleet carriers at Midway was irretrievable, especially with the Two Ocean Navy Act ships completing and joining the US fleet.
Also Fletcher was in command at Midway. Spruance proceeded toward the IJN fleet and launched his planes when he did because Fletcher ordered him to. It is worth noting that Yorktown's dive bombers showed up over the Japanese at the same time as Enterprise's even though Spruance had a head start. Fletcher didn't relinquish command to Spruance until all four Japanese carriers were burning. Posted by: the guy that moves pianos for a living at October 17, 2016 02:18 PM (x3uSY) 499
"It's hard to determine motive, but there is ample evidence FDR had plenty of warning regarding the danger of having all those ships in Pearl harbor, and the warnings came from his own military regarding a Japanese attack."
Weren't Japanese military cadets asked from the early 1930s on, as part of their graduation, how they would launch an attack on Pearl, or is that just urban legend? Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at October 17, 2016 02:19 PM (X6fMO) 500

497: Bingo. They were both prepping for war sometime around 1942-44. The Red Army's poor showing in the Winter War made Hitler think the Soviets were weak enough that he moved his plans up, before the generals thought they were ready. The real question is this: What would have happened if the Japanese had attacked the Soviets at the same time as the Germans, instead of in 1939?

479 As Midway made a landing on Guadalcanal possible, Midway was where things turned. The landings in the Solomons were the proof that things had turned.
And 3 hours on June 4 1942 sounds much more like a 'point' than three months in the Solomons. ------- Midway wasn't the strategic turning point because even at that time Japan still retained the strategic initiative. MacArthur's New guinea campaign was initially a defensive response to the Imperial Army's attempt to occupy New Guinea and turn it into a forward post for something serious directed at Australia. As of October 1942 the Imperial Japanese Navy still had the ability to keep the initiative and avenge their losses at Midway with another strategic matchup in their favor. Instead, they pissed their immediate strength in ships, aircraft, and seamen away across three months over a minor recon base the Marines grabbed as a defensive measure to protect convoys to Oz! The diversion of men and material to Guadalcanal also let MacArthur gradually take the offensive in New Guinea, and save Australia. After the final evacuations from Guadalcanal the IJN did not engage in a major fleet operation until they were forced to defend Saipan in the Battle of the Marianas, aka the Marianas Turkey Shoot. Regarding Adm. Yamamoto: There was a reason he was reticent to attack the US. Before the war he had spent time touring the country and saw the untapped industrial reserve capacity we had. It ultimately heavily informed the Pearl Harbor attack: He knew the only way to beat us was to wipe out a significant proportion of the Pacific Fleet, giving them time to dig in for a defensive fight. Had the carriers been at Pearl on the 7th, the Navy would have had to make a hard decision: Put what little remaining resources into defending HI (Basically the entire Atlantic Fleet IMHO), Focus most of those resources on defending the Mainland (I.e. the Aleutians and the coast), or focus on the Germans. Note that both options 1 and 2 would have left the Royal Navy responsible for ALL of the convoy protection in the Atlantic as well as ops in the Med. Bad for the Brits needless to say. Yamamoto had the right plan. If the carriers had been at Pearl...

The real question is this: What would have happened if the Japanese had attacked the Soviets at the same time as the Germans, instead of in 1939?
-------- The short answer: nothing good for the free world. With the Siberian armies engaged Stalin would have had no strategic reserve to save Moscow in November and December. Hitler could still have screwed around with the Kiev front and still have taken Moscow at the end of November. the disruption caused by Stalin removing to the Urals would have let the Wehrmacht mop things up while Goebbels crowed about the Nazi triumph to the entire world. Japan's big gain from this joint effort would mean that the Brits would then be permanently on the defensive against the Third Reich and towel boy Mussolini, and would not be able to hold their Asian possessions against the Imperial Army and Navy, let alone dream of retaking them. It would have been the USA alone against Japan, if Japan had felt the need to attack us then. FDR would have been under pressure to protect US territory first, which would have put our armed forces on a leash. Posted by: exdem13 at October 17, 2016 02:42 PM (ry4ab) 509

508: Precisely my thinking: I bet the Japanese wind up with most of the Soviet East Coast, either due to Stalin moving everything to the German Front or in a armistice with a Vichy-like, Nazi supported Russian Govt. in the wake of a Soviet loss. Vladivostok and the Chuchki Peninsula would have put Alaska and parts of the West Coast in bombing range I think. It would have also served as a perfect staging point for a more serious invasion of the Aleutians and from there the rest of AK.

505 Regarding Adm. Yamamoto: There was a reason he was reticent to attack the US.
---------- Yamamoto's honest pledge to give Japan six months made him seem very prescient in retrospect. After all, Midway as about six months after Pearl Harbor, right? But he could justly point to the American production effort, which had put naval and aircraft expenditures first. If the USA was stunned into submission and a defensive stance by a string of defeats, said Yamamoto, Japan would purchase the time to complete the planned Asian conquests and (in theory) establish too tough a defense for the Allies to overcome. If the USA did not throw in the towel within the first year, eventually the US armed forces would have enough aircraft and ships to begin peeling Japanese defenses like an onion, and the Imperial Navy would still have to fight at a disadvantage, victories or no victories. 512: Right, but taken in the context of the whole war, Hitler would have had a much much freer hand in Europe. In that context, maybe Rommel wins in N. Africa and gets sent to Russia and he does to the Russians what he did to the Brits for much of the N. African campaign. Another variable that changes is Lend Lease aid: If the US gets knocked on their back foot and possibly loses HI as a viable staging point in the Pacific (either via getting the crap bombed out of it via Midway or via an actual invasion) I wager little to none of that aid gets to the Soviets and the Brits. In the end, yeah Japan would have eventually had to sue for peace (but not unconditional surrender I think), but Hitler probably would have won in Europe.

498, the bigger problem is that all the steel Japan needed to build more fleet carriers had to come by freighter from their industrial colonies in what is now North Korea and Manchuria. Those freighters were easy sub targets since the IJN didn't do cargo escort wuth its overly elite destroyer force.
Japan only built 40 odd new aircraft in 1942, factories were retooling, and only completed one new fleet carrier that saw action before war's end, 1944's Taiho. Posted by: Colonel Kurtz at October 17, 2016 03:43 PM (zfvHs) 518
