Congress Overrides Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill, the First Time It Has Done So

It's a popular bill, so Democrats cravenly went along with it, giving, as it does, the victims of 9/11 the right to sue Saudi Arabia for its alleged connections to 9/11. (Of course, they'd also have to make that case in court.)

I'm not sure this is wise. Yeah, I know Saudi Arabia was involved. Saudi Arabia is the flower of terror throughout the world and always has been.

But if we're using this as leverage or a sweetener to extract concessions from them, and we're giving that up to give some (admittedly deserving) people money... Not sure if it's a good trade.

Then again, Obama doesn't use leverage to get anything out of any foreign power, so I don't know what this administration would be giving up.

Hillary Clinton's "Charity" foundation will probably end up poorer, alas.

So there is that.

And there will be a price to be paid, I imagine, for Saudi Arabia permitting its million clerics to propagate pro-terrorism messages on the internet.

BTW, Hillary's stout-hearted running mate skipped out on the bill so he could avoid casting a vote unpopular with the country at large or casting a vote which would upset Obama's cultish coalition.

But never fear-- the media will absolutely hound him on what his vote would have been.

Hillary's plastic phoniness is hated by blue collar people but I suspect that many more well-heeled people saw her performance as "professionalism"because they're used to plastic phony people with the right credentials at work, at cocktail parties, and when they themselves interview for a position or interview someone else. A certain smooth blandness and empty poise appeals to many of them.

Don't believe me? If you're a white collar worker look around your own office. The glib bullshiters who can paper over a lack of actual results with platitudes often do very well for themselves.

The original bill passed the Senate on a voice vote, but the GOP plan was for the House to kill it and take the political heat instead of the brave Senators.

But, Ryan doubled-crossed the Senate and pushed the bill thru on another voice vote, scared of the backlash himself one assumes, and Obama actually had to veto it.

Also should mention the bill had plenty of waffle in it, with giant loop-holes Obama could use to basically ignore it, but that wasn't good enough for everyone involved.

61 Our son was in middle school and watched the Towers come down, the often-forgotten Pentagon hit, and the crash in PA.

He vowed, at that young age, he'd fight the bastards.

So, I just posted this below because I am seething and crying:

I am so FUCKING ANGRY I am close to tears.

The VA was late this month with our son's benefits, both cost of living stipend, and tuition.

We covered for him until his money came through.

He called his dad and said it STILL HASN'T COME THROUGH, and it's the same for most of the veterans he's going to school with.

He's called our U. S. Congressman, but in the meantime, we'll need to cover for another month's rent.

Fucking
Obama and this fucking administration!!!! Thank G-d we can afford to
help him. I feel so sorry for the vets who have no one to turn to.

I'm not sorry for my rant. This country can't even take care of those who put their lives on the line for the rest of us.

Two of our son's buddies killed themselves last year. Both of them were over-medicated by the VA. One of the boy's dad told our son he BEGGED the VA to take him off the drugs they had him on because they made him feel terrible.

They told him if he went off them on his own, they would no longer see him.

A week later he was found in a motel room dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

I CAN'T EVEN.

Is it too fucking much to take care of young men and women who went to serve after they saw the Towers fall?

*seething rage and incredible sadness*

89 Wasn't it something like 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis? And several of the "muscle" guys were visa overstays. Had the government done their job and evicted them, the whole plot might have fallen apart. The big question here is did any Saudi government official help any of the hijackers remain in the US, either legally or illegally. That's what is going to have to be proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, in court. And if they have anything, the Saudi's have enough money to hire the best lawyers in the US. And some of the best prosecution witnesses died in the crashes.

Got kind of a pre-buzz going on. Thinking a 3d mule would be a useful addition.

Problem, I use half a bottle of the Ginger beer per mule, so it would be better for pairs, but I don't think that I can handle 2. And I don't want to have half a bottle of the ginger beer just hanging out.

I remember almost within the day it was announced America had surpassed Saudi oil production, they went on this race to the bottom.

I'm sure there are other players they want to hurt, but they've been fairly upfront this is about putting marginal producers out of business.

Posted by: Maritime at September 28, 2016 07:30 PM (onbPc)

96
Oil is the most globalized commodity in history. Even with the cartel, which has (of course) had marginal control over price for most of its history, the commodity is very efficiently priced.

"Dependence" is not an issue, given the abundance of the commodity. "Independence" WRT one supplier yields zero difference in strategic considerations of our interests, esp. in the MidEast. This was true even before the global oil market developed the way it has since '73, and it's especially true given unconventional recovery methods and the advances in deep ocean recovery.

Abundance should be the only policy - which amounts to "get out of the way" in terms of domestic production.

Actual market economics is much beloved of so many, on paper, but is almost unheard of when spitballing smart approaches to actual policy questions.

Major target of Saudi pricing policy last few years had been the common Persian enemy.

Oil is abundant, and the supply curve is very responsive to price, which means if we need more domestic production, we'll get it, and very quickly.

Our ability to out-produce them establishes a new ceiling. They have to keep price below that level, otherwise we move back into production again.

But the people who hold positions of authority within the Saudi Government might have easily, or indirectly been involved.

They are a Kingdom, not a modern type of government...

The country is literally OWNED by the House of Saud...

Every major player in Government is appointed by the King, who is the head of the House.

Thus, if an Official, who was appointed by the House of Saud's King, did help in 9/11, and the House itself did not hold them accountable... then yes, they are complicit at this point and should be punished...

160 Whether you fall on the Left or the Right, it's just disgusting that we only recently learned about these hidden pages regarding Saudi Arabia in the 9/11 report.

The worst attack in American history, but we simply can't let the Americans know the truth about Saudi Arabia. They couldn't handle it, too risky

But they can damn sure handle a huge expensive war in Iraq.

It's both parties that are at fault, and the appeal for an outsider is clear.

It has to do with politicians will always find ways to tax the shit out of gas all over the world. We are actually one of the cheapest places to buy gas in the world.

Well Venezuela was cheaper but food was unaffordable.

I'm not a fan of adding more regulations, more taxes, more cost. Just the opposite. Get politicians out of the business of micro-managing business. Posted by: Ignoramus at September 28, 2016 07:50 PM (r1fLd)

No. Stop spreading that ridiculous false argument. No one ever said that iraq caused 9/11. What happened was that after 9/11 we reassessed the threats posed to us (since we had been terribly wrong about them before) and the threat from iraq clearly rose above our threshhold, so saddam had to go.

But you don't care about the truth, do you?

Saudi Arabia had to be dealt with eventually, but of the three major threats from the arab/persian/muslim world - the sunni, shiiite, and secular threats, the easiest and most important at the time was the secular threat from saddam - not to mention the fact that he was technically at war with us and had been for a decade - and that once in iraq the ability to deal with the other two major threats from the APM world was that much easier.

223 Little-known in the U.S. is that among a substantial portion of=ethnic Arabs worldwide, the Saud clan are considered illegal usurpers of power in the Arabian Peninsula.

Ever wonder why it used to be simply called "Arabia" and yet is now called "Saudi Arabia"? Because a machiavellian clan known as the House of Saud outmaneuvered its rivals to claim the kingship about a century ago. But what right do they have other than being the most brutal and the sneakiest? None.

The equivalent would be here officially renaming the country The Clintonian States of America.

Not only do other clans still claim legitimacy, but of course fundamentalists want to wipe away the tribal structure and establish a theocracy with a Caliph in charge.

Democracy, however? Hahahahaha - zero chance. The very concept has almost no supporters.

This is what is meant by the term "Islamofascism" -- it actually means that in Muslim countries, the government inevitably returns to totalitarianism -- it is the irradicable nature of Muslim society.

When saddam intentionally dumped tens of millions of barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every oil well in Kuwait on fire, all as he was being allowed to retreat in the worst military beating in all of human history, it was clear to everyone with at least half a brain (don't look in the mirror) that he could not be allowed to remain in control of one of the most strategically sensitive areas of the world. That was more than enough and 9/11 forced a reassessment of that.

As to after the Gulf War, saddam broke every cease fire agreement and was actively at war with us in that he was shooting at us every day. He also kicked the UN dipshits out and made iraq a black hole of information that no one had any idea about what exactly was going on.

Those threats could not stand unattended after 9/11. Only a total idiot would fail to understand that.

You benefit from saddam being gone and then act as if he was never a threat. It's almost laughable.

239 >>OK aside from trash talking, what exactly did Saddam do post Gulf War 1 that posed a threat to the US.

Technically, there was no post Gulf War 1. We were in a state of cease fire which placed a number of severe sanctions on Iraq almost all of which they violated repeatedly. The most problematic was firing on our planes who were enforcing a no-fly zone. This alone was enough to resume the fighting.

But the key was Iraq's refusal to submit to the UN weapons inspectors inspections. This was kind of a big deal for a country that was constantly in search of nukes. They were also harboring and supporting terrorists in Israel.

In a post 9/11 world where we rightfully believed we were the target for more attacks allowing a country like Iraq to flaunt the sanctions, support terrorists and pursue nukes would have been a dereliction of duty.

But we live in stupid times so we decided to win the war and lose the peace.

244 When saddam intentionally dumped tens of millions of barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every oil well in Kuwait on fire, all as he was being allowed to retreat in the worst military beating in all of human history, it was clear to everyone with at least half a brain (don't look in the mirror) that he could not be allowed to remain in control of one of the most strategically sensitive areas of the world.

It's not just islam. The arab terrorism of the 20th century had little to do with islam. Mostly, they were Soviet clients and it was an arab thing. It was pan-arabism. It was only after the Soviets fell (and iran was rising) that the arabs had to go find some new sponsors for their anti-civilizational war and they honed in on the islamic aspect, realizing that they had the rest of the islamic world to now bring into the fight against everything that's decent and civilized..

Yeah. It's not unreasonable to expect countries who get beaten so badly in war that their soldiers are surrendering to Italians - not even Italian soldiers but Italian journalists - to adhere to the cease-fire conditions and not try to start shit up again. A country that gets beaten that badly and then goes right back to attacking those who made a mockery of its army is a very sick country that is not even in the same universe as "sane".

THANK YOU for setting the record straight.

Everyone (well, not here, but in society in general) is SO GODDAMNED MISINFORMED about the 2003-8 "Iraq War" that I've long since given up trying to zomsplain it to people.

WE WERE ALREADY IN A STATE OF WAR against Iraq on 9/11 and in 2003, and had been for years and years. We merely had a fragile "ceasefire" in place that temporarily stopped the shooting. The ceasefire was dependent upon Saddam Hussein following a whole bunch of stipulations. He basically violated them ALL. We had the right (some would say legal duty) to resume the shooting war. The terror attacks of 9/11 just happened coincidentally near the climax of Saddam's sanctions-violation. In truth, the re-invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 -- it just looked that way due to a historical coincidence, and because it was politically expedient to let everyone jump to the conclusion that the invasion of Iraq was "payback" for 9/11, which it wasn't.

I didn't make one mention of any "bad info" I stated facts.

But, since you bring up the WMD issue, then the fact is that the Iraq War turned up more serious WMD than anyone had even imagined. It was only because taking saddam down so quickly and thoroughly scared the living shit out of Q'Daffy that he puked up his whole nuke program, which included a deep look into the AQ Khan network, which was the most dangerous WMD proliferation tool in the world. It was only because of the Iraq War and what that did to Q'Daffy that we were able to identify and shut down the AQ Khan network.

So, even in terms of the WMD argument, the Iraq War ended up turning over more than we ever expected. And that was only because of the Iraq War.

I covered this. The army that dumped tens of millions of barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every single oil well in Kuwait on fire. Fo you understand the threat posed by a guy willing to do this who sits in control of one of the most important oil-producing pieces of land in the world?

Oil is the lifeblood of the world. If someone really wanted to hurt us (and the non-muslim world) badly, the worst thing they could do is just destroy the gulf oil fields. The world would be thrown into utter chaos.

Eventually, we woiuld adjust. Someone would adjust, at least. But you can't just replace 10 or 20 million barrels a day in a few years. The price would go beyond anything anyone has imagined and that would drive economies right into the ground. It would be pretty nasty for quite some time and who knows what would transpire as that was going on. Many, many economies would just come to an immediate standstill.

We could ramp up coal (but even getting that going again would take some time) but many aspects of modern life would have to immediately change.

I certainly can't say that my ideas about this are certain to occur, but I think that most policy-makers don't want to even think about what might have to be done, or what might happen, if say, 30% of the gulf oil production were to be disabled for some long period of time.

388 The Koran demands conflict with the infidels until they pay the humiliating jizya tax.

In Obama's Mental Caliphate, jizya money is supposed to flow to Islamic entities. That's why he opposes the bill, not because American troops might be sued. That's a plus for Obama. But not at the price of Americans being able to sue Islamic entities.

That's why we spent $770m to renovate mosques in Egypt, Cypress and Mali--to include computers and internet. What could possibly go wrong?

Compare Obama's treatment of 9/11 victims to Iran. There was no court judgment ordering us to pay. Obama was acting as Iran's lawyer and pronounced America guilty and paid them out of the Judgment Fund--and he was the judge, jury, plaintiff's counsel and bagman.

Iran made the IEDs in Iraq maiming and murdering hundreds of Americans. They bombed the Marine Barracks in Beirut and Khobar Towers. Is Obama counterclaiming for all those damages? Hell no.

They let bin Laden operate out of Iran. Guess what; now Americans can sue Iran, too!

That's why he and the Ayatollah are so desperate.

389 63 Note... same day this veto passes...

OPEC announces a cut in production.... one that had been opposed in the past by the House of Saud.

Oil is, and has been, a weaponized commodity for a generation.... we need to FRACKIN drill here... even if it is more expensive.

390 I do not care about the merits of this over ride. I grin like an idiot every time I hear the words... Congress over turns O's veto.
