32 I'd trust the latimes poll simply because sooooooo many people screech about how it's skewed and biased and the only "outlier" (even if there's multiple national polls that day showing Trump ahead, which has been the case of late).

It's got parody accounts on twitter. For a poll! They must be measuring something with real accuracy to have the Ds all flipped out. I think the simple, neutral question wording and minimal question set help a lot.

That is what I always come back to. Hillary voters are "low energy" for the most part. Trump voters are extremely motivated. In this regard, Brexit is a good comparison. How that plays out we'll see. But if we predict a low turnout election, it would seem that the campaign with the more intense voter base would have the advantage.

40 Felon -

LA Times is using a new methodology from U of Southern Cal. It uses a fixed sample of 3200 respondents. They never poll anyone other than those 3200. The sample never changes so they are immune to the problem of sample distortion.

If that poll shows a shift due to an event like a debate, then it is showing a real change in the opinions of voters because of the debate. They have controlled one of the variables that can bias other polls.

You should only give credence to the movement though. Whether Trump of Clinton is really ahead depends on the validity of their initial sample. But for tracking movement, it is the one to watch.

Would a slight Hillary lead in polling be a terrible thing? Would it perhaps keep turnout down among the lazy folk with other things to do on that day who are not all that enthusiastic for her? I still think actual drive to turn out will be the key above general opinion.

Though I would rather see a big Trump lead, of course.

I dunno, and mostly don't care because there are so many ways to skew a poll. The point is to get a headline and start a narrative, and they've gotten that. How doesn't seem to matter anymore.

Spot on.

Most of the other polls give little or no detail about the people they polled. If they gave a full breakout you'd be able to recreate their analysis with your own assumptions about the key variable, turnout.

Trump won the debate by not losing. Because he mostly stuck to his marching orders not to make a first impression to first time viewers as being a dick. By going personal, Hillary opened the door to later attacks in the second and third debates.

Not a new methodology. It's what a tracking poll is.

And while the overall poll of respondents is fixed, the sub-sample of 300-something taken each day does change. So you do see some shifts due to demographics.

My guess is Hillary will see around 3-4 points across the board for the next 7 days or so, and then creep back down a bit.

However you want to score the debate, my opinion was it was more of a lost opportunity for Trump than Hillary beating him or Trump embarassing himself.

Still, the fact that Trump actually went up in one of the largest polls tells me it's not having a dramatic effect on the electorate.

How the respondents for today's poll voted before:

2012 Vote: Mitt Romney 34%
2012 Vote: Other 3%
2012 Vote: Didnt Vote 16%

2014 Vote: Democrat 46%
2014 Vote: Republican 32%
2014 Vote: Other 4%
2014 Vote: Didnt Vote 24%

So, the Hillary number appears to be the always votes D folk.

Your mother, heh, your mother is so, uh, so fat, yeah, so fat that she, uh, she couldn't identify her feet. Like, uh, the police were talking to your mom and they were showing her pictures, like of suspects. They were probably investigating the earthquakes or who was setting off the car alarms, incidents which I might reference in the future which corroborate the incredible fatness of your mom. It's not really pertinent. Anyways, the police showed your mom a picture of her feet, and were all, like, "do you recognize these feet" and your mom said "nope, not at all", and she wasn't just lying to them. She does not know what her own feet look like. Because she is very fat. Which reflects poorly on you. I think I messed up the order but the important takeaway is your mom is very very fat. Like five or so Miss Venezuelas, the porky versions.

Several of us active in local party politics at the time kept telling them no, Indiana wasn't sewn up for the GOP and would they please put some ads out there, but no, no worries, it's in the bag. And so it was: Obama won Indiana that year.

Time for Trump and the RNC to counter those ads, start spending money and get some skin in the game. Letting that shit go unanswered is a bad, bad idea.

Morrissey's analysis requires you to believe that: (1) the only thing that matters is turnout in a couple of bellweather counties, not statewide turnout; (2) a democrat advantage in early voting in these categories presages a statewide defeat; (3) Trump has not goosed turnout in counties that are not traditional bellweathers.Sorry -- Ed's post sounded like yet another plug to his book. 44 Trump
40 Hillary

Undecided voters break like 80% for the Challenger, and Hillary is the incumbent.
Also, I have to think undecided voters are just embarassed Trump voters. Is anyone truly undecided about Trump vs Clinton?

It's not going to lead to a D win this time. There have been numerous articles floated recently about Hillary's lack of energetic, organic support and without that, she can't put up the numbers Obama did. Obama is the fraud/energy limit. They don't have more in the tank. If she had even 1/4 of that, there would be tons of articles about how there was so much support for her. But they aren't, it's strictly anti-Trump blasts. That's how I felt, I didn't want to start saying the polls are skewed because I thought that about Romney and got my shiny ass burned over it.

However, I think the scenario is inverted now. Polls cannot predict turnout and it undersampled Obama's support because Romney was a shit candidate nobody liked and that many were certainly not energized to vote for.

This time it's Hillary that has to beg people to turn out to vote for her, so I strongly believe if anyone's support is being undersampled it's Trump. In addition I also strongly suspect we have the same shy Trump syndrome as the shy Tory voter of Brexit. Associating with Trump is not the same as with Romney because of the violent backlash we're seeing now, just for saying something positive about Trump. How many people that is, is anyone's guess.

If the largest national poll shows Trump leading by 4 points, I don't know if you can really call it "wishcasting"

Even left leaning "gurus" like Nate Silver have Trump at around 50% for his chances.

Also, many states that Hillary should have locked up are within the margin of error for these polls. States like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, etc are all in that 3 point range.

Also, the idea that maybe Republicans do better on turnout vs 2012 that a lot of these models are based is not "tin foil" hat stuff

This is what I don't understand. It's an open secret that polls, essentially all polls, take the data they receive (from wherever they got it), then wash, rinse, spin, and repeat it, using whatever formula they choose, to arrive at a guess as to what the raw data means.

It's no more accurate than taking a dart board and throwing at any given combination between 40 and 60 for one candidate, some balance of that number that adds up to less than 100, and then some small number between 0 and 5 for the undecideds.

Sooner or later, somewhere in this process, someone is going to nail the actual, you know, vote count. And that outfit will be declared the winner! It's no more or less reliable than your horrorscope in the paper, someone reading your palms, or someone spitting in the wind and interpreting the globule pattern.

And its even worse than that when you consider the problems that they are having in gathering the raw data in the first place. Tens of thousands of telephone calls for 1 response. Cord-cutters getting rid of landlines, etc.

The "secret sauce" they apply in the weighting determines much of the results.

This isn't to say that we should jump on an "unskewed-polls" bandwagon, but we shouldn't close our eyes to the fact that each poll takes into account unknown assumptions regarding turnout, the racial makeup of the electorate, etc. Pollsters can, and do, get things wrong, even if they are trying in a good faith way to arrive at the correct result. One look at Brexit should tell you that.

319 Looks like a 9% tilt to Dem vs Rep. So since Obama won by 4% in 2012 it is a bad poll. and not only that, Scankles will not get as much as Obama.

If I was a pollster, I would do something like average the last 3 or so elections and model them after that.

So 2010, 2012, 2014 take the

Democrats/Republicans/Independents and match them up in %

My guess is that leads you to a 50/50 with respect to Democrats vs Republicans

There are some differences in the way some of them are ran. Some just take the raw data as it is accumulated. In a nationwide poll that probably will we more women than men and if they poll heavy in urban areas that will get more Dems than Republicans. So they can honestly say it was random, except for where they polled is not random.

Other polls take the raw data and manipulate it using a normalization fraction based on the last election. For a national poll that would be a no more than 4% tilt to the Dems.

When you see numbers of Dems polled greatly over how the last election went then you know that something is rotten in Denmark. Also, if you don't see any numbers at all.

Tongue in cheek, I would run out the clock for sixty seconds or whatever about the high number of well known famous republicans who have confided in George S. I would use George's name casually 10 or 15 times while naming zero republicans, of course. Just iterate how many there are, and how well known and influential they are, bigger and broader until the buzzer.

I still don't think he has an MLB future, but during his "open audition," the one "plus tool" scouts agreed he had was power - he was given from 50 to 55 on the 20-80 scale, which is like a 25 HR a year guy at the MLB level. If he can learn to play a decent OF (defense in the outfield is more about knowing routes and less about pure speed), a guy like that can be an MLB regular - but he's got a long way to go.
