University of Tennessee Ends Its "Investigation" Into Glenn Reynolds Illegal Use of Free Speech

Ah, but it's the threat, isn't it? The process is the punishment, isn't it?

We are supposed to be free to speak -- and know without equivocation that we are free to speak -- precisely so we are not menaced by the threat of official persecution.

So that we do not become the Censor's inside man and censor ourselves out of fear.

Do you think the University of Tennessee wishes Glenn Reynolds to know -- to reallly know -- he's free to speak?

Or do you think they intended to install a Censorship Inside Man in his head, causing him to mind his p's and q's?

Today, Professor Reynolds issued an apology to the law school community via email.

I have always strongly supported peaceful protests, and I've spent years speaking out against police militarization and excessive police violence in my USA TODAY columns, on my blog, and on Twitter itself. I understand why people misunderstood my tweet and regret that I was not clearer.

91 The only appropriate response, a la Ezra Levant to the Canadian speech commissars is to tell the censors that whatever "intent" or "implication" they fear, or seek to censure most, is exactly how he meant it. If they want to measure his right to speak by "offense" then he should explain that he meant the maximum amount of offense they could infer, and too bad about that because its his right to offend.

Are you seriously suggesting that a President Hillary Clinton would suspend Constitutional protections for Americans? Four years of President Hillary Clinton won't be the best thing for America, but conservatives haven't truly made a strong case for our cause. All would need to do over the next four years is demonstrate the need for greater constraints in social conservatism, expand our voice in universities, argue coherently for the z-factor in fiscal-economic-market-tax bracket factors, and encourage young people to consider what their lives will be like 40 years from now if they don't vote wisely now.

113 How much of that sweet, sweet "college" football money was spent on this exercise in Fascism?

U of T ought to be ashamed....
Posted by: Hairyback Guy at September 27, 2016 07:21 PM (ej1L0)

None. College football is part of the athletic department. College athletic departments are run independently of the college budget, and while the academic portion of the college may contribute to the budget of the athletic department, and most of them do in the form of student fees or an actual subsidy, it is extremely rare to ever find an athletic department with enough money to be able to contribute back to the academic section of the college.

In 2012 , only seven college athletic departments in the USA had enough operating income and reserves to not accept any subsidies from their parent college.

I am happy to report that Ohio State is one of the colleges. And for the last few years, the Ohio State Athletic Department has ended it's fiscal years with enough budget left over to provide a donation(yes, it's a donation, remember, these ADs , and colleges are 501c3s) to the general scholarship fund of OSU to be used for scholarships for the general student population.

Athletic departments can't simply transfer money to colleges since they are stand alone entities.

(Athletic scholarships actually come from the NCAA, applied for and administered by the individual college)

The huge amount of money generated by individual school's football team, television rights, etc. goes right back into the athletic department budget to pay for the 25 other non revenue generating sports, which the college MUST provide because of Title IX.
Think women's water polo, etc. The college must provide those sports if men have those sports, and they must provide facilities, coaches, administration, transportation to meets, equipment, etc. even though three dozen people show up at any given meet to watch and maybe one or two donors provide some money. By the time a college provides that kind of expenditure for 20-30 non revenue generating sports, all the money from football profits, and additional profit typically from basketball and in some cases hockey, is gone. It's why most college athletic departments run deficits and need subsidies.

Rutger in 2012 spent $28 M more than it took in in it's athletic department. It's why they begged to join the Big Ten because of the TV contracts.

And now you know....LOL.

216 Glenn Reynolds has to live with the people in the lunchroom in his department, I guess.

And while he didn't grovel, per se--he didn't back off the statement, just the sentiment--and while he backs it with self defense, I think there's a difference between "don't stop" and "run them down."

And we need to go to bat for the difference between those two statements. It's right to be righteously angry that our lives and property and peaceful transit are threatened by angry race mobs; mobs stirred up on the basis of false claims as regularly as scheduled holidays; mobs who are now organizing where and when they will commit mayhem.

"Run them down" is the correct sentiment in this case, not "keep driving". Keep driving is a call to take a degree of action which is limited to one's personal well being--not incorrect, and fully justified by the law. But when the law is failing to protect our communities from these mobs, and when the law is in fact being applied unevenly if at all in favor of the mob (i.e. the DOJ's actions in these cases), then it seems to me a more serious sort of response needs to be proposed by those who do not wish to live under mob rule.

****

It's a giant "virtue" signal that lights up Gotham and compels Ted Cruz and Jeb-Rubio to jump into a Volkswagon Rabbit for emergency fundraisers.

There are two types of nevertrumpers. One is the pundit class who found Trump to "icky" aka "not our class, dear" and potentially not neo-con. They're fine with Hillary because "war." The second, which found cover from the first, but should not be confused with them think that political elections are meant for them to polish their souls and they, therefore, attribute the candidates with potential merits of Christ or a medieval king. They fear pledging their troth to a liege lord they can't worship.

Hillary is a win for the first type. Acting out their righteousnss to be seen as one of the elect is the goal of the second. Niether care about anything but themselves, in the first case money, in the second case their "righteousness."

With all due respect that is false. In this comment I will omit the close tag entirely, and the italicization will not spill out of this box.

The key is: if you forget the slash in the close tag, you have TWO italucs tags in one comment and THAT is what triggers an overspill.

248 It should be, "the THREAT is the punishment". The process just establishes that the threat is to be perceived as real. That's how these SJW mobs work now - the implied threat of getting screamed at; the implied threat of getting harassed; the implied threat of losing your job...

And, if they can make good on it, so much the better. That's how they operate now.

Too long have the conservatives "turned the other cheek" to this and, quite frankly, some people think that's "toughing it out". But it's not going to work. It hasn't.

Too many people take "turn the other cheek" out of context. People like this will only keep pressing while their abuse works for what they want it to.

He takes it for granted that they're all propaganda and skips the leading articles. He buys his paper for the football results and the little paragraphs about girls falling out of windows and corpses found in Mayfair flats. He is our problem. We have to recondition him. But the educated public, the people who read the high-brow weeklies, don't need reconditioning. They're all right already. They'll believe anything."
