Mislaid Monday Moron Medical Monitoring Thread

I forgot to put this up yesterday.

I've got no particularly good advice. I do not know how i broke my stall. I've been drinking a lot more water -- who knows, maybe that helped.

I have heard it said that while people debate this expensive supplement or that one, they ignore the cheapest and most effective supplement of all: Just water.

Oh, and sleep. My sleep's been better. Not sure why. But they say that sleep is as important to getting into shape as exercise (or, well, pretty much as important).

A friend and I were talking about the frustration of attempting a body recomposition (not really trying to "lose weight," exactly). It's not that things move slowly -- if they moved slowly but consistently, it would be reassuring.

The problem is that nothing seems to happen for a couple of weeks, then suddenly you drop weight. Even after, say, you said "Ah the hell with this Manorexia, I want Taco Bell."

It's the fact that, past the first two months, inputs and outputs seem correlated in only a slight way, if at all.

I also started having more protein powder. In theory, that should slow weight loss. But then, I only have it before and after workouts, so who knows. Maybe it gets used up without turning to fat.

Anyway, my gains have been very slow but are pretty consistent (consistently slow, that is) since I broke the plateau. I almost put up a Bonus Medical Monitoring post on Saturday for one reason: Because after working out I dropped to 176, the lowest weight I've seen since college. I wanted to put up a thread and say "176!" because i was pretty sure I just sweated two pounds off and it would be back by Sunday.

Well it was. I'm back up to 179 but still, under 180. That was a big goal and a major reason for this thread: To keep myself going past 180 (I've been at 180 a lot) and finally get myself down to a reasonably trim 170.

I guess I'm losing a pound a week now...? Or a half a pound..?

And I suppose that's... something?

So:

TELL ME ABOUT YO GAINZZZZ, BITCHEZZZZ

Holy Crap: So, for four or five months, I've been putting butter in my coffee, and MCT oil.

But not blending it, as many recommended.

Why? Because I'm a dude and I'm lazy and I always look to Reduce Steps and Increase Efficiency even if it means I'm drinking horrible coffee with a quarter inch pool of buttery fat on top of it.

After all, Real Men do not seek comfort. It's indulgent and womanly.

Real men drink disgusting coffee. Because they're Men.

So, anyway, I discovered I actually had an immersion blender. I bought it a year ago at Target or something, when I had planned to start this, and never opened up the box.

I started blending the coffee.

Wow.

Now it's no longer black coffee with a yellow pool of grease on top of it. Now it's.... well, it tastes like coffee with luscious cream in it.

Now I actually enjoy coffee again instead of just wolfing down black coffee with a skin of partially melted butter.

How did you goofs not insist to me I just blend it?

If you're drinking it the "Ace Way," that is, the Moron Way, you're missing out. Spend $20 or $30 on an immersion blender -- you just stick it in the coffee and blend. You'll be glad you did.

One thing, you have to put the coffee in a taller glass to blend (otherwise it will get sloshed around, out of the cup), but that doesn't take long. You can just rinse that glass after you use it, stick the blender in it, and set it aside for tomorrow.

3 There comes a point where you're outgaining the fat loss with muscle add. Muscle weighs more than fat, so you stop losing weight.

You can tone your muscles without bulking up, causing them to be heavier because they're healthier. Not that you've lost all the fat you can lose, but the body will still retain a store because it can.

For consistent, sustainable weight loss, a pound a week is the goal.

Congratulations, ace, that is quite the accomplishment.

7 I did wonder.

I was down about 3/4 pound this week, which is better than I expected. Unlike my usual IF, I ate every day, sometimes twice a day, which has become kind of hard, actually. (I mean, 'cause I'm full and haven't scaled back portions, I guess, so my previous normal fills me up.) But I wanted to try it.

This week I'm going back to more spaced out eating: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday.

8 I've seen the stall-and-resume thing too. Stupid beta meat sack, as a certain fun-sized Empress might say...there is NO FAMINE you can drop the fat, it will be OK!

I can go up more stairs without my legs falling off! Also, even when my scale was telling me sad news I noticed my fitbit band needed to be tightened more holes to stay on, so yay.

11 Ace - Have you thought about transitioning to a maintenance diet? My body-builder co-worker is a protein freak.

His recommendations to me was start the day off with oatmeal.. then a bunch of eggs (tossing some of the yolks) mid-morning - he eats like 6 or 8.. then protein rich meats for dinner and eating veggie carbs.

Did you plan on staying in ketosis forever? I can't imagine that is good for the body long-term.

13 My crazy IF observation of the week, speaking of sleep:

Do you find you need less? I seem to. I haven't figured out if there's something else going on, but I used to be able to sleep a lot more (and figured I needed it). Now I'm up after about 7.5 (or less) and seem to be fine.

no but a bit of advice i got from IF is this:

Hunger pangs come in waves. If you ignore them, they go away in ten minutes.

One way to get rid of them is just to drink a big tall glass of water filled with lots of ice. It fills your belly, it pantomimes all the eating movements (tricking your body into thinkint it's been fed), and you need water anyway.

Drinking a big bastard of water when you're hungry can put off the next hunger pang for an hour or more.

Sleep is important says the person with terrible sleeping habits. You know what the single most useful item to have in my makeup bag is? A full night's sleep. Nothing will brighten the sky and freshen the eyes better.

I've heard different information about the value of water mostly that it doesn't have to be just water, it can be any type of liquid that doesn't turn around and dehydrate you which is a polite way of saying no alcohol. Tea can be tricky because depending on the type it's causing you to evacuate more liquid than you are taking in.

34 Mr A

You're on track. Fats and protein miunus refined wheat carbs = success. 2 lbs a week is the max reasonable and sustainable fat loss. that equates to a 7000 calorie deficit, which ideally is a combo of INCREASED burn and DECREASED intake. Anything else is a BS claim, unless you're febrile/sick/catabolic.

Sleep ? try B-Complex with evening meal. Good for the brain, which is metabolically active .... in some folks ... uhhh ... not myself

Ca++ and Mg++ are cousins on the periodic table, and collaborate to relax muscle and CNS activity. DO NOT TAKE a powder supplement as indicated, or you'll experience the wonders of 'decreased transit time,' or diahrrea, as we morons call it. Calms plus Calcium [ find online] ... a scant teaspoon an hour before nappy nappy works well

I also have a glass of red and a chunk of cheese an hour before ... they've done studies on elderly groups with multifactorial sleep disturbances, and a small glass of beer / wine plus cheese works better than prescription sleepers. Whodathunk ?!

Plenty of water throughout the day, of course, just stop 2-3 H before bedtime so that you don't pooch sleep with a 'call.'

Hope this helps; small payback for a great blog. Mucho Thanko

42 I have a question for those with long-term experience in HFLC. How do you keep the fat from destroying your gall bladder? I'm wondering because I'm considering shifting to HFLC (or closer at least) but I'm concerned about the kids since by the time John was 30 he couldn't have pretty much *any* fat without becoming violently ill. Was this something unusual that probably won't affect his children? Is it one of those "No diet works for everyone" things?

With diabetes in their genetic make-up from that side of the family I prefer the idea of fat to sugar, but don't want them to have to get gall bladder surgery at young ages either if I can help it.

44 I dropped 30 pounds with HFLC at a rate of one to two pounds per week, and then just stopped losing right where I needed to be. It was amazing. I have maintained that for over a year. (No exercise to speak of during that time.)

I started weight training with a good training partner four weeks ago. I have gotten a lot leaner and gained four pounds. My waist is trimmer, my abs are visible, and shoulders are much bigger and more defined. Today, I did 3x5 on bench press with 10 pounds under bodyweight. My squat is weak due to knee surgery over the summer, but I'm working on it. I haven't The only nutrition change I have consciously made is that I eat a can of sardines in olive oil once I get to the office after lifting. 47 A pound a week is the perfect rate of weight loss, based on experience, and what my old timer doctor has told me for years. And it's not as hard as it seems. Most of this shit is mental. Just push away from the extra portion of ice cream, that extra couple of beers, or that extra pile of macaroni and cheese every day, and you'll more than likely lose a pound a week without busting ass. Give it a try. I've lost 20 - 22 lbs since early April this way. Slow and low, like cooking a brisket daddio.

Posted by: tubal at September 27, 2016 04:48 PM (d6TTt)

50 I, for one, do not buy the "2 pound a week max" except as a very broad rule-of-thumb on the level of the BMI.

There is no way that a 120# woman and a 240# man have the same reasonable weight loss maximum. There just isn't. There's no way that a person with 3% body fat can lose as much as a person with 50% body fat.

And what are you supposed to do with that information anyway? You don't really know how much you're losing per week. If it averages out to 3 pounds/week, do you panic and start eating more, regardless of other indicators? If it averages out to 1/2 pounds/week, do you berate yourself?

It just seems like one of those stupid rules that gets repeated because it's easy. Like that bro-science one "The body can only process 50g/protein for any given meal."

I read a great piece about one of the main sleep researchers, we're taking a guy who pioneered a lot of the field, and he admitted that after nearly 40 years of study, he still has no idea why the body and brain need sleep. We know that we do, but why sleep, specifically, is still a mystery.

I think you can still do the HFLC, just not as extreme on the H and L, and maybe a little more protein. The Boy (my son, who is diabetic) is cautious because of the diabetes, of course, but also because high-fat can upset his stomach fast.

As for length of time, I've mentioned that my oldest was on the ketogenic diet for epilepsy for 6-7 years, and it was WAY more extreme than anything we're talking about here. She's had no ill effects from it. (And there are many such kids you can research on the 'net, if you want more anecdotal evidence.)

Posted by: moviegique at September 27, 2016 04:54 PM (7zeA4)

65 It's not about the weight, it's about the shape of where the weight is distributed and the composition of the poundage.

Take, for example, abrasive rapper-skank Nicki Minaj. She's only about 5'5", and volumetrically, if you just measure her as a bag of flesh, she is very substantial -- her ass is gigantic, her thighs are thundrous, and her books are immensely ponderous. I wouldn't be surprised if she weighed 165, 170 pounds at least.

YET, she is considered by her many fans and admirers as supremely attractive, because all that flesh and fat are in exactly the right places: big hips and tits, skinny waist and face and ankles.

Conversely, there are any number of meth whores out there who at 5'5" weigh no more than 90 pounds, and yet they look like shit because their muscles are all caved-in and they have no "tone."

To paraphrase the Beastie Boys,

"We need body-shaping, not perfection."

My problem with weight gain started after I quit smoking, then got cancer. Before cancer I walked two miles every morning. Now I have chemo-induced neuropathy that makes walking painful. So eating more than 2,000 cal a day and no 2 mile walk is putting on the weight.

Oh, well. I guess being fat is more healthy than smoking 4 packs a day which is what I was up to when I quit.

I have no gall bladder and I have not even noticed it is gone. I've been HFLC too. I think it is an individual thing, how the gall bladder is used in digestion. In discussions pre-removal, nobody mentioned eating too much fat was ever a concern in causing the issues. Now, gall bladder problems *can* be hereditary, which is why I was happy to wave it goodbye. My mom had the equivalent of a sack of marbles when she had hers out, and I did NOT want that to happen to me. (And her doctor had her on a "if you even see fat, cross the street and avoid" diet until the surgery, but that was because any activity at all could have ruptured the damn thing).

Yes. In John's case apparently the bile that breaks down fat had become exhausted so he couldn't digest it *at all*. 83 A few years ago sustained a foot injury and got in the best shape in years, due to being on crutches. I realized that each step I was taking required dead lifting a good part of my body weight. The Frankenboot I had to wear for six weeks after the cast came off just kept the slimming and toning happenning.

Then my foot healed and it wasn't long before, HELLO Muffin Top, HOW YOU DOIN'? occurred.

So I started back to the gym. And although I am in a love/hate relationship with the experience, I have to say there must be some truth to the "muscle memory" theory. I am doing minimal work and already seeing the softness and doughiness replaced by lean hard sinew.

OK that's a bit of an overstatement, but I am noticing GAINZZZZ and that's what's going to keep my fat ass going until I'm back in a size 6.

90 I plateaued for probably close to two months and then I quit paying particular to my diet and things like the time I ate, etc. I have since lost eight pounds and that puts my total from Jan 1 at 53 lbs. I'm much fitter, but a shoulder problem that is annoyingly persistent has frustrated my activities in the gym. I've had to basically invent (I know others have done the exercises, but they are not exercises that are common) most of my upper body stuff. I think my ideal weight is still roughly 15 lbs lighter, but we'll see how this plays out. I wouldn't mind keeping a bit more weight if I could transform it into muscle. Overall, I am extremely satisfied, at my age (63) and where I have journeyed from (functionally a cripple in Aug 15), to be where I'm at. I don't think many people get to experience this type of turnaround in their life. I still have a hard time believing that it all started with a 180 degree change in my attitude.

91 As of today I am down 31.8 pounds since July 7. Just before the weekend I was down a full 34 pounds so not sure what happened there. I kept disciplined over the weekend. I did drink a glass of red wine on Saturday night but hot damn that should not have kicked in 2+ pounds of insulin resistance. I am setting my goals 5 pounds at a time so my next big mark will be to hit that full 35 pound mark. When I finally hit the 50 pound mark I am going to buy an expensive bottle of scotch to reward myself.

Oh - and I have hit the last notch on my belt. A few more pounds and I'll have to add a new notch. Any Austin area folks have a leather punch I can borrow? ;-)

104 I see a personal trainer once a week. When I interviewed him he told me he thought cardio was a joke for weight loss, that any more than 8 reps means you need to move up in weight. That refined carbs were poison and there's no way to eat too much protein. Rippetoe is his God.

He said. I keep telling him there's no way we're going to burn enough calories in a half-hour to matter, that lifting heavy to build muscle is the only way to keep burning fat after I leave the gym. He nods then tell me to do 4 sets of 10 box jumps.

111 I used to buy into the "just eat less and move more" theory of weight loss. I would do it and at best, I would lose a pound or two after a week of starving myself and obsessing about food. There was no way I would lose 30 lbs. that way.

It took the Dukan diet to persuade me otherwise. High protein, low fat and almost no carbs. I stuck to "phase one" religiously for a week before I first stepped on a scale. When I did I was stunned to find that I had lost 13 lbs. in 7 days. I went on to lose the entire thirty in about four and a half weeks.

Since then, for me carb control has been everything. If I can keep the carbs below 40 grams a day, nothing else matters. The weight will stay off.

I am extremely skeptical of many of the claims of the diet gurus...Taubes included (I think he is an opportunist). The research simply isn't complete.

But....the accumulating research seems to indicate that fat is not the evil that was once suggested by many, and that carbohydrates -- simple ones in particular -- should probably be limited.

However, research describes populations, not individuals, and human physiology is so incredibly complex (AtC just pointed out upthread that science has no idea why we sleep) that to generalize is very dangerous. Maybe in a few generations we will have enough of the basic physiology down that we can start prescribing diets for individuals.

That being said...it's a thread for people who are interested in this stuff; not a thread to poo-poo it.

I think Levis sizing has just gotten haphazard. I was a died-in-the-wool levis wearer all my life until they started doing funky things with their jeans back about 5 years ago. It was probably even longer ago but I buy jeans in bulk purchases once every 5 or 7 years.

Anyway, they changed the cuts. THey changed the material. THey changed pretty much everything. And the prices got silly. I looked around, bought a pair of wranglers, which were cheap as hell, great fit, good denim ... wore them for a test and went back and bought 8 pairs.

No more levis for me. Levis quality control is a bottomless pit of failure.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at September 27, 2016 05:08 PM (zc3Db)

124 Ace,
I'm sure others have probably told you this before, but it's not the weight that you want to look at, ultimately. If you're working out and eating better, and your body fat is diminishing, you're replacing it with muscle, which weighs more than fat. As you get into better shape and your muscles gain more mass, as opposed to body fat, then you're simply going to weigh more, it's facts. Concentrate more on how you feel, even for the narcissistic side of you, how you look, over how much you weigh! If you look good, you feel good, if you feel good then it's on like Donkey Kong!

133 LincolnTF -- Every time, the same thing: "Eat less, exercise more."

A lot of people believe that. I've done it, and it's worked for me. (For a while.) But it doesn't really address the underlying issues.

If you believe in that, if it works for you, that's great. But it's really annoying to have someone come in and repeat it over and over again, as if we weren't all aware of the calories-in-calories-out concept. As if we hadn't done any research. As if we're just chasing a fad.

If you think the mysteries of human weight gain/loss can be summed up with the laws of thermodynamics, fine, but put some effort into researching what actually happens. Otherwise you're just nagging.

136 >>>'m sure others have probably told you this before, but it's not the weight that you want to look at, ultimately. If you're working out and eating better, and your body fat is diminishing, you're replacing it with muscle, which weighs more than fat.

no i know all that but there is no accurate way to measure body fat percentage vs. lean percentage.

The electronic ones are godawful and might as well be random number generators, and the caliper method depends on getting an accurate read, and I don't really know how to get get an accurate read.

even with that, they say: "Well this won't be accurate per se, but you can tell the directionality of your changes if you keep your inaccuracy consistent."

I'll have to try it on the neck muscles. Fortunately, I don't really get headaches.

Costco (Canada) always has protein powder (about 2 kg) for $40 Canadian. I imagine they have it for sale in the US too. I'm thrilled with this because I remember buying protein powder years ago when it was only in health stores and it was SUCH a ripoff.

145 I will mention that my weight loss is slightly more complicated than your average person because I am an insulin-dependent diabetic (aka Type 1) - so I am constantly juggling my insulin intake and my carbs. It can get tricky and as I am losing weight I experience dangerously low blood sugar (e.g. 31 instead of 100) that require a quick shot of carbs - also known in my house as "emergency skittles." So this tends to slow down my weight loss for a bit while I figure out what my new insulin requirement is for my reduced body weight. In the past I was afraid to lose weight because of it, but not anymore. I'm committed to the weight loss for my long term health. Having a fit, healthy wife that encourages me, exercises with me and does the Lose It app with me is an immeasurable help.

146 I am going to say something extremely controversial about diets.

I firmly believe that everyone's body is different and that what works for one person is terrible for another and that you have to try stuff to find out what works for you.

The problem, of course, is that right now we don't have a simple little test to say okay your metabolism is better with high protein and low fat and no carbs and yours is better with moderate protein and high fat and some carbs. Nope. It's hit and miss.

And then your body goes hahahahahahaha and changes it up.

Because Blessed Mother Gaia is a bitch.

148 No weight loss gainz this week, I think primarily due to a weekend carb and alcohol binge.

Also no running gainz. After failing to do Couch to 5K Week 6 Day 1 last Monday (probably due to lack of sleep the night before), I had planned on trying again on Friday. Friday, though, I got tied up with work/childcare/other commitments and didn't get a chance to break away for a run. Would have done it yesterday but when I had a chance to run it was 102F outside and fuck that. Going to try on Thursday, then next week get back on the Monday&Friday schedule.

149 50 days on HFLC with IF of about 17 hours and buttery coffee instead of breakfast with lots of water and vitamin water (for electrolytes) and some bone broth along the way but not in awhile -> 18.8 pounds dropped

Shooting for about 18 more and then maybe good, maybe a few more

Walking about 15,000 steps a day - not much other exercise because of bad knees

Dropped 1.8 pounds today after almost a week on a plateau. Funny how that goes ...

Where do olives rank as a weight-loss food?

I absolutely love olives (especially hand-picked kalamatas) and would eat them all the time if I could.

They seem to be nothing much more than fats and fiber (i.e. olive oil + vegetative material), so I'm hoping they actually count as a "high fat/low carb" food.

But I never ever see any mention of olives in the lists of good or bad foods. Which are they?

Good upper body workout, and also good for small muscle groups in your legs, thighs, and glutes.

Lots of fun, and very very quiet and relaxing, after you get the hang of it.

166 I mowed the lawn this past weekend for the first time since June when I had surgery for the hernia.. surgeon gave me the all clear for any activity last week.

I quickly gained 3 pounds! Perhaps the 4 day weekend of eating restaurant food with my wife had something to do with it, though..

I find IF so much easier during the work week. I can just concentrate on work until noon, and that's about 17-18 hours since I last ate. (except on days like today when a co-worker brings in muffins and cake for their birthday)

Doing that has kept me at a plateau.. but it is amazing how I have pretty much stayed the same weight for almost 2 months while really doing no exercise at all.

173 A friend and I were talking about the frustration of attempting a body recomposition (not really trying to "lose weight," exactly). It's not that things move slowly -- if they moved slowly but consistently, it would be reassuring.

The problem is that nothing seems to happen for a couple of weeks, then suddenly you drop weight. Even after, say, you said "Ah the hell with this Manorexia, I want Taco Bell."

It's the fact that, past the first two months, inputs and outputs seem correlated in only a slight way, if at all.

it evens out over time
weekly turns into monthly, turns into yearly

you have to be patient

if you're only a few pounds to your target, it is harder

1 pound a month is not bad. It will stay off if you continue to eat well.

more than 1-2 lbs a week is fine at first if you are very overweight (more than that is dangerous), but after that, get used to the slow as it goes

even when weight training, because, yeah, it will add bulk, but then beware, if you stop (which many people do eventually), it turns to flab

cut calories when and where you can, to anticipate heavy days

I once heard a similar event described as "Mt. Saint Healthyfood". One of the issues John had with losing weight was that his stomach had stretched due to years of *very* large meals (my M-i-l is an excellent cook and he had two older brothers to compete with for the food).

We went to using smaller plates, but he had to drink a lot of water in order to feel satisfied as well. We did that because he was only in his early 30s but the Dr. gave him six months to get his weight down or he would *have* to prescribe blood pressure medication to prevent allegations of malpractice. John was also showing signs of pre-diabetes and since his mom's entire family of 9 has type two diabetes he couldn't just ignore the issue. With a few simple changes he lost 40 pounds, but we never did manage to figure out how to have him maintain that before he had the first cancer diagnosis and became less of a priority.

So, in my case, I just eat light, intermittently fast, and burn off calories in a non-workout-y fashion. And it works. At this stage, it's increasingly difficult to take off any more weight.

187 so here's the update, which I want people to read in case they're having their coffee the terrible way I told them to have it:

The most accurate method is probably a scale immersed in a tank of water (hydrostatic weighing). Your % body fat can be calculated pretty accurately that way.

It is however not the most convenient way to weigh yourself in the morning.

After back surgery, I quit smoking, and I gained weight. Then I had neck surgery, and I gained more weight. Since I was not able to exercise and my taste buds came back, I gained even more weight. I exceeded all pregnancy weight before I was able to start losing any.

I'd like to get into a little black dress for my graduation in December. I think it's a size 12. It seems almost impossible, but walking 5 miles a day for 8 weeks netted a loss of 11 pounds. It takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to go 10,000 steps, and I can't seem to get in into my schedule now that the semester has begun.

I drink water and unsweet tea. I need to eat less, but I have no will power when it tastes so good and it's right in front of me.

One of the diets that seemed to work for my mom had you eating a few olives or nuts before your main meal. That's not very helpful though since I didn't do the diet myself and wasn't living with her when she did. There was an acronym (MUFA?) for the nuts and olives though.

I have a whole lot of matcha tea that I got as "sample packs" at a foodie event. I've tried to drink as much as I can, but dang it, I just can't integrate it into my lifestyle. The taste is pretty good, but matcha just doesn't "go with" anything -- the flavor profile is too radically different from most everything in the American diet. So I still have a lot of packets left over with no plans to drink them Sigh.

216 I'm so far away from my goal, I'm discouraged. I've done it before, but it was more than ten years ago and I have old ness and bustedness to contend with. Thank god for this thread where I can both whine but remember to keep going.

So I went down another pound, I am below the Alamo at which I should never ever gain weight above. I've lost about 20.

But I am 35 pounds away from being the just a pound or two underweight that is my happy place, where I stayed for years and years. It took a long time, a long year and a half, to floof up again.

I've got six to nine hard months to slog through to be normal again, that is, if I don't stall out, because of the new oldness. Menopause will be coming for me sometime, I've got a few years tops. I heard your stomach turns monstrous and you lose your waist.

My waist is my best part, this is terrible news,
I don't want to shop at the fat lady menopause store,

I'm sad I can't run, and wouldn't be able to even if I hadn't dropped the pruning shears into my foot. I can walk but it makes me really anxious as I am a ruminator on events in every verb tense, and only running gives me a clear head. I need a new excercise but I don't know what.

Regular dieting wasn't working so I'm down below a thousand calories a day. My hormones hate me. The scale budges, slowly, real deprivation required. First goal done. The second is for a certain blouse from the fat closet to button properly. It almost does. It's a medium with horizontal stripes and I can remember when it was too BIG for me get away with wearing it.

Low carb doesn't mean no carb. Too much protein can actually be detrimental - it prevents ketosis and may (not certain) bring about keto flu. Changing your lifestyle over to LF, in my opinion, means you don't have to be too anal about restrictions. Stay out of the center isles of the grocery and you'll be fine.

Hi Sarah!

Don't think about your goal as being 35 pounds away because that's very discouraging.

Let your goal be just 5 pounds. Or even 3 pounds. It's doable. You can reach that in about 2 or 3 weeks. And when you do reach the goal, you may even be 1 pound under goal which makes your next goal only 4 pounds away!

Chunking things down into more manageable pieces makes everything easier.

All the best.

But, that doesn't seem to be working quite as well this time around. Too slow.

So, I'm trying the low carb dealio and doing more walking /jogging. Some minor weight lifting to start then work my way up.

Change your approach up a bit to keep it interesting and be sure to note all your wins: As ace pointed out a few weeks back, you make progress and then you FORGET you've made it, and you just look at where you are now. It can make it easy to get discouraged.

In the beginning it was consistent but after the first three month I'd go long periods of time at the same weight then lose 10lbs in a day.

I eat only meat, cheese, veggies & fruit (very little fruit.)

I've had absolutely no cravings whatsoever.

Got my sugar to normal with no meds.

Having two excellent butcher shops in the area is a plus. I eat a lot of cured meats because they are portable & I work all the time.

Funny aside & cooking tip: there is an excellent bbq place here. Their chicken is fried with no breading but it tastes & has the texture of breading. Doing low carb I went there once a week.
Well I found out the secret when I walked in and one of the sons was in front talking to a girl while dredging the chicken in a 50lb sack of sugar.

I can't eat it anymore but for those of you who can try dredging you s chicken in sugar before you fry it.

The place is in a filthy shack smack in the middle of a terrible hood & is packed with suburbanites. The bbq is that good!

Brussel Sprouts cooked right.

Take some Brussels Sprouts. Cut them vertically into fourths.

Olive oil in pan. Get it hot. Then FRY THE LIVING HELL out of those sprouts, stirring constantly, until you start to get some Maillard Reaction and they are blackened. If you think you're done, then KEEP GOING and fry 'em some more.

Onions and garlic in the mix is good too.

Squeeze a bit of lemon juice on top, and a sprinkling of chunky kosher-style salt.

Even if you never liked Brussels Sprouts before, you will go "YUMMMMM!" And as far as I can tell, it's a super-lo-carb dish with lotsa cruciferous fiber, so good for you.

Both in the sense of generational commitment, political will (less so for private enterprise), presidential time frame etc. etc. and in the sense of what's actually within grasp within ten years. 279 For all you younger whipper snappers I'll let you in on a little secret about weight control. The older you get the harder it is to lose weight or not gain it.

When I was in HS I weighed 135 pounds and ate like a horse. But I ran the mile and the 2 mile in track. But still kept the weight off after HS.

When I got out of the Navy at 26 I weighed around 150 and still ate a lot even though I was smoking then.

When I stayed around that until I went into Nuke School and sitting at a desk all day but was up to 28 then. Went up to 165 pounds. When I retired I was 55 yo at about 170 pounds pounds going on. Quit smoking and didn't take long to shoot on up there.

But to make a long story short, after I went above 30 the pounds went on a lot easier and came off a lot harder. Above 50 it became tougher than ever.

maybe if you're stuck you should increase your calories. 1500 is low.

i don't know. On my end, I don't know if it helped, but adding extra protein (which is extra calories) correlated with my coming out of my stall.

289 Finally get to comment on this thread.

I work from home as many on this blog seem to do. Been that way the last two or three years. I had been a consistent 183-185 with a nice gut to show for it. But about six months or so ago I just said fuck it and let go. Started eating a couple gallons of Bluebell a week along with Pringles and don't get me started on tortillas. Hmmmmm tortillas. Anywho, work requires a biometric screening on July 19th this year. I weighed 193. Heaviest I've ever been in my life. Diabetes runs in the family and my cholesterol levels were all outta wack. That was my wake up call.

Since then I've been eating less and much more healthy. I've been tracking what I eat in the MyFitnessPal app which has helped me a great deal. I am walking about 5 miles-ish 4-5 times a week which gets me my 10k steps. My ideal or desired weight(read: during college) is around 165. Right now I'm at 177ish.

Thanks Ace, for giving those of us who are trying to get our shit together an outlet to share ideas and encouragement. It does help.

The problem with the CICO model is it ignores all the hormonal reactions and adaptations as weight is lost. The body likes fat because it is like an energy piggy bank. If you try to deplete your savings, your body will shut down withdrawals. Cheat meals and cheat days help because they reset hormone levels so your body feels more comfortable with lower fat reserves if it has higher calorie intakes every so often. You got to beat your evolutionary fat storing.

326 speaking of hormones and weight loss,

it is the conventional wisdom that exercise is one tenth as important as diet in losing weight.

but that's based on strict calorie counts -- yes, a half hour of exercise burns, say, the calorie equivalent of a slice of bread or two.

But we now know that it is not calories in calories out -- hormones play a major role.

Ergo, as far as exercise: How can we be sure that exercise doesn't boost testosterone which, in turn, builds muscle and, oh yeah, also leans the body out?

(Testosterone leans the body, estrogen fattens it.)

So while I know it's true that diet is MORE important, I'm now questioning if the calories-in-calories-out estimate of exercise's contribution is in need of modification when you take the testosterone-producing effects of exercise into factor.

333 ace--

I think that's true. Packing on fat OR muscle must necessarily increase your BMR, which means you burn more calories, so it can't just be that your exercise only burns the calories at the moment it's being done. I guess there could be an exact trade off of BMR when you lose fat and gain muscle, but I personally find I generate a lot more heat when muscled.

Another thing you pointed out is that when you CAN move more and better, you DO move more and better. That's gotta add up over time.

Ask those 10K's what they eat afterwards for a couple weeks. Guarantee you they are binging on the wrong stuff.

Do they drink "diet" soda or soda? Shouldn't even be in anyone's diet. But it is. It helps people who are dieting because they still crave sweet, but it is detrimental.

The CICO works if you parallel it with eating right and normal body management. Like Ace said above, water, for example. Some people do not drink water, or not near enough. And movement.

Our society does not treat our bodies "normally."

We sit, we sit, we sit. We don't drink water. We don't move. We sit.

I hate to bring up "Europeans" or city dwellers, but if you walk everywhere, if you can walk to the store, walk to the bus stop, walk to just about anywhere and not take a car, you are burning calories that should normally be burned daily.

Exercising once a day, or 5 times a week, or 6 times a week still might not do it because what do you do in between? Sit.

And yes, sleep is critical.

336 >>>So while I know it's true that diet is MORE important, I'm now questioning if the calories-in-calories-out estimate of exercise's contribution is in need of modification when you take the testosterone-producing effects of exercise into factor.

Exercise is important in sending the signal to the body to preserve muscle - that when choosing where to sacrifice, burn the fat and don't waste the muscle. Reducing muscle lowers caloric requirement of body, so helps it adapt to calorie deficit. Preserving muscle is either high protein (PSMF) or exercise by lifting weights (or both). Testosterone will drop with caloric deficit. Exercise will spike it up, and cheat or reset periods (refeeds) can restore it. Losing weight while keeping lean tissue is a two steps forward, one step back process.

338 Ergo, as far as exercise: How can we be sure that exercise doesn't boost
testosterone which, in turn, builds muscle and, oh yeah, also leans the
body out?

Numerous studies have shown that lifting weights DOES boost testosterone in men, which helps build muscle and thus lean the body out. Testosterone is the key hormone for men; it's the driver for men's health.

344 >>>Ask those 10K's what they eat afterwards for a couple weeks. Guarantee you they are binging on the wrong stuff.

No, their body just has adapted. There was an article many many years ago about an endurance athlete that looked like a chub. Would routinely beat guys with six packs, lean, everything. His diet was good. But his body just had adapted to (a) be surprisingly energy efficient during exercise, even long exercise , and (b) to downshift amazingly fast afterwards in terms of slowing metabolism.

This is key to progressing steadily, perhaps even slowly. This goes for gaining muscle as well. If you ramp up volume or load too quickly, you find that you will stall sooner and it will take even more volume to progress and eventually even the same volume to maintain. So progress as far as you can at a certain level before jumping up to the next step.

346 artisanal 'ette --

Yeah, they do eat badly sometimes, I think. I know one who binges on chocolate, for example. Doesn't explain the WHY, though. That is, one thing IF has shown me is how variable the whole hunger/satiety thing is. We treat it like it's God in this society. "Peckish? Good lord, eat before you pass out!"

As for diet soda, I drink it. I've found it not to be at all problematic. And I'm coming from a paranoid place of worrying about toxins and aspartame-causes-brain-cancer, etc.

"The CICO works if you parallel it with eating right and normal body management. Like Ace said above, water, for example. Some people do not drink water, or not near enough. And movement."

Hmmm: "eating right" and "normal body management" are kind of the "black lives matter" of weight control. You may have heard that there is some disagreement not just on what constitutes "eating right" but also how much "movement" constitutes "normal body management" to say nothing of how those interact. Fung, for example, notes that attempts to make kids exercise more results in compensating lack of movement when they're not being corralled.

Much like the chubby mini-marathoners, we respond to "I exercised" with "now I don't have to move any more".

I've done the water thing, too, where I drank regularly, anywhere from a half-gallon to over a gallon a day. It's got some merits, I think, but it's a small piece of the puzzle, IMO.

But, in all seriousness, thank you for raising some credible points for CICO.

I've read reports/studies (easy to google if you're interested) that have shown that just as weightlifting has been demonstrated to boost testosterone production, sustained cardio work (in the realm of 10k or farther) has been shown to depress testosterone production for 24-48 hours following a long-distance run. After a two-week de-load period I jumped back into deadlifting last Friday. I had a guy video my lifts, and it was as I suspected. I was borderline okay at 325 for 3 reps (and the lighter weights), but my form/technique went to shit when I jumped up to a single at 375. It sucked swamp water.

It's the downside of working out by myself, which is my only option when lifting in the fasted state. And I refuse to change and go back to evenings. I have soooo much more energy when lifting in the fasted state.

Anyway, I searched youtube and found numerous 'tutorials' on form/technique for deadlifting, and I will go back to basics this Friday and correct my shitty form.

373 To Ace's point on drinking water - I have found that if I stay hydrated I lose weight more consistently. Not sure if drinking water has any weight loss properties but it seems to help with the consistency of it for me. Or maybe it's that by staying hydrated I have less water based weight fluctuation. I have been lax on the hydration lately and routinely go down 4 pounds and then up 2 and then down 3 and so forth. So continuing the downward trend but in an up and down sort of way. When I stay hydrated there is less of that up and down. What I try to do is keep a huge cup of water - the kind you get at Rudy's when you order a large (unsweet) tea - always with me and refill as soon as it's empty. I find that I drink more water if I keep a couple lemon slices in my cup. Just not into the plain water so much I guess.

Garlic Soup Recipe

Serves 4

26 garlic cloves (unpeeled)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) organic butter (grass fed)
1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
1 heaping teaspoon turmeric
1/2 cup fresh ginger
2 1/4 cups sliced onions
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
26 garlic cloves, peeled
1/2 cup raw, organic pastured milk or coconut milk (homemade is best) or your favorite substitute
3 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth
4 lemon wedges

Preheat oven to 350F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and toss to
coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl.

Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, thyme, ginger and cayenne powder and cook until onions are
translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted garlic and 26 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes. Add vegetable broth; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until smooth (or use an immersion blender) Return soup to saucepan; add coconut milk and bring to simmer. Season with sea salt and pepper for flavor.

Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve.

394 Thanks for miracle noodle, tip. Im running out of ways to replace super carby things in meals I make for the men in my family. Cauliflower rice was a big hit. No one can eat Brussel sprouts, even with bacon. Noodles could be very handy.

395 I boxed in college (Naval Academy) and let's just say that since getting out of the navy and 3 boys I got a "dad bod." Now I'm using Isagenix and it is awesome!
If you're stuck in a rut like I was this is probably the best way to get out of it and into your best body.
If you want to see some results and have some questions feel free to email me: mclean_chris@hotmail.com
Or check out a video that I have up at www.healthyfitfun.isagenix.com

396 SarahW, don't know if you've tried it yet but spaghetti squash is also a great substitute....or zoodles, zucchini noodles.

397 Oh and the bags of Miracle noodles aren't big. I used the fettuccine one last night and there was just enough for my husband and myself.

398 You can do it! Exercise isn't the big thing as far as weight loss, but it can certainly help one's spirits, so you might look into doing something low-key. I'm doing Maffetone which is big on a "no pain" approach, and it does work. (Fellow moron "chris not rock" is my inspiration here; he's done it for years.)

Change your approach up a bit to keep it interesting and be sure to note all your wins: As ace pointed out a few weeks back, you make progress and then you FORGET you've made it, and you just look at where you are now. It can make it easy to get discouraged.
Posted by: moviegique at September 27, 2016 05:39 PM (7zeA4)

Thanks very much for the suggestion for excercise ---and general buck-up. I'm intrigued by Maffetone because I had I think success training myself along those lines before, becoming much fitter than I expected or meant to be.

I have what I think is probably a labral tear in one hip.Strait line walking isn't painful, but there are some issues with joint rotation and navigating wacky terrain. If it's something else, excercise might make me better, so I'm game to try.

399 Ace, I seriously had to look up,what planks are. I guess I'll try some. They look possible.

My Swedish isn't very good but good enough that I can worry in it. I can practice my Swedish football chants, though, that might work. http://youtu.be/EzGCNZDe9bU

400 Attagirl, SarahW!

And if exercise doesn't make it better, do a different kind of exercise. Maffetone's all about the walking, because it's simple and generally non-traumatic, but you can do anything that gets your heart rate to 180-age!

401 >>>ce, I seriously had to look up,what planks are. I guess I'll try some. They look possible.

they're doable, but be careful, they're harder than they look -- don't get discouraged when they're hard.

I was surprised at how hard they were.

But just hold the pose for however long you can, 20 seconds, 15, 30, whatever, and just start lengthening that hold.

402 The problem with being last to the thread is you're looking at a good 30 minutes to scroll through the comments. Still worth it to find the government sanctioned food pyramid troll got the boot.

Kudos to everyone who is enjoying the tasty benefits of plants and animals while giving the middle finger to the crony capitalist diet of corn, wheat and soy. Healthy whole grains my ass. Not my line, but whole grain is like putting a filter on a cigarette.

Ace, glad you didn't get discouraged during your stall. From a state of mind perspective, which I may have said last week, but lost my connection and don't think it posted, you're not on a diet. You've adopted a lifestyle. Once you accept that, everything will take care of itself.

I've been doing this shit for years now. Even without the exercise portion, your body will, over time, conform to a shape that allows you to physically do what you need to do day in, day out. Doesn't matter if you believe we were designed by God or the product of evolution, but there is a blueprint and everyone reading on Mondays is getting let in on the knowledge.

403 >>>Why can't you just use cream in your coffee. It's just liquid butter.

you can but butter has marginally more fat. it might also have different fat, maybe more of the medium chain triglycerides that are said to be more readily usable as energy.

405 Generally I have to come in here and put my foot down on some misinformation, but I see the Head Moron has done it for me. Bummer. I love telling people who think Atkins/keto/LCHF doesn't work how much weight I've lost. It never gets old, even if their bullshit does. (for the record: generally for breakfast I eat a six-egg cheese omelette and a flax muffin, lunch is a big-ass salad with half a bottle of blue cheese dressing, and dinner is a steak big enough to dent the hood of a fucking Prius. I don't know exactly how much weight I've lost, but I've been doing this for 18 months and my back-of-the envelope figuring suggests that if I haven't already lost more poundage than Ace currently weighs, at the rate we're going that inflection point will happen soon.)

deplorable @votermom, @96: So my birthday is on the horizon and kid wants to know what kind of cake I want since I'm lowcarb.

I don't want to bake one.

Any suggestions for cake that is not too bad a cheat?

Google "Atkins-friendly" or "keto" or "LCHF" before anything and you'll usually wind up with a workable substitute. A certain woman who thinks the way to my heart is through my stomach generally makes me yummy desserts every weekend, but I'd still like her without them (it doesn't hurt, though). She made me an almond-and-coconut-flour cake with a cream-cheese frosting that was tremendous. Right now I'm having a "brownie" that is basically fudge and is high-fat as hell (butter, butter, more butter, unsweetened chocolate, more butter).

If you don't want to bake, though, I've found success by adding enough Splenda to cream cheese to make it cheesecake-ish then beating it to softness (nuke it for 30 seconds at a time) and dumping it in a crushed-nut crust. Front to back, probably no more than 20 minutes of work. Actually, come to think of it, I did bake the crust because I used eggs as a binder. When I'm really lazy, though, I do the same thing in a Tupperware bowl and mash some blueberries in it until it has the consistency of pudding. Add whipped cream, too.

pookysgirl, @171: Ok, all you people who are on HFLC, what do I serve with steak that is
NOT a vegetable or a carb? Because that's where I get stuck in meal
planning. "Ok, we've got meat and... what else?"

Guacamole. Technically not a vegetable.

Seriously, though, you should probably be having a salad a day to get your vitamins and fiber in and that seems like a good time to have one. I posted this recipe in a previous M4 thread: spinach, olive oil, bacon crumbles, minced red onion, bleu cheese crumbles, sliced hard boiled egg, chopped walnuts. You'll thank me.

GAINZ, bitchez:

5x5:

squat: 120
bench: 110
row: 110
shoulder press: 80 (THAT was a bitch, though. my left shoulder is wonky and always has been. but if you want a laugh, do a YouTube search for "south bend cubs mike foul ball" and watch me get drilled)
deadlift: 210

I don't think my muscles are that much bigger but I'm getting toned as hell. Like, I can tell the difference between each muscle in my thighs and ass. Also, I'm losing my cankles. I can feel how far up my Achilles goes. It's pretty awesome.

406 Lightning Bolt!

If you can't do coffee, try a rooibos chai tea. It stands up to the grass fed butter and MCT oil.

Good stuff.

407 Did the butter coffee with a blender this morning.

O M F G

What a difference.

The first cup slid down my throat in 30 seconds flat.

It's like drinking dessert.

I will try to slow down with the second cup.
