Trump had more to lose and gain: and didn't alienate anyone who wasn't already alienated. He also allowed some who were on the fence to think of him as a more serious candidate.

The problem Republicans as a party have had is first and foremost with the white working class. We do great with whites in Alabama. We do terribly with whites in Michigan and Pennsylvania and New England.

Clinton is a passable debater, a C, maybe a C-. This was not a great performance - it had bad laugh lines, was overly practiced, not particularly nimble. We don't need a conspiracy to explain mediocrity.
The problem is that Trump is uniquely terrible - Clinton poked him and he responded just as anyone would have predicted.

YES they do! A LOT of people have a personal, vested interest in the Uniparty approach of open borders, mass immigration and cheap foreign labor.
It's corrupted much of the country. From lower-tier colleges who have to fill their classrooms with immigrants loaded with student loans to pay the salaries of the hack professors and overpaid administrators, to corporate farmers who just need cheap labor for a couple of months in harvest season but impose year-round costs on all of us for the mass illegal immigrant population.
If it was not such a powerful special interest, it would be easy to defeat.

Otherwise, the debates are for something else--Trump had to prove that he was not a nasty crazy racist rage-a-holic and Hillary had to prove that she had a pulse and could stand up for two hours without keeling over. No one really gives a damn what they said other than trying to get some gotchas for TV ads.
Policy points, minor gotchas, etc. will fade within about a week. What sticks with normal voters is general impressions like would you have a beer with them, would you invite them into your home, etc. Think these debates as actually auditions for the ultimate reality show: The Presidency!

I am right there with you--I generally read the transcripts, catch a few of the video clips, and get my gut feelings by reading the comment sections of multiple blogs. Whatever happened tonight, the major takeaway will be whatever narrative is spun for the next week and then it slips away quietly like a ghost.
The ironic thing is the major effect that the debate has is whatever people seem to takeaway from it rather than the actual spectacle. Lincoln-Douglas debates, these are not.
