California's Bag Ban: A Wealth Transfer from Customers to Big Grocers UC President: It's Freedom of Speech, Not Freedom from Speech As president of the University of California system, I write to show how far we have moved from freedom of speech on campuses to freedom from speech. If it hurts, if it’s controversial, if it articulates an extreme point of view, then speech has become the new bête noire of the academy. Speakers are disinvited, faculty are vilified, and administrators like me are constantly asked to intervene. The goal of our university education today should be to prepare students who are thoughtful, well-informed, and resilient. The world needs more critical, creative thinkers, and American higher education does a better job of producing them than any other higher education system in the world. We seek to make the world a better place for the next generation, and teaching the values and responsibilities of free speech is inextricably linked with this goal.I would take this a lot more seriously if it weren't coming from Janet Napolitano, and if she didn't hedge later on, and if she didn't preside over the biggest catastrophe in higher education in the entire world: the once great University of California system. But at least she is mouthing the correct words. From Dorothy Parker to her editor Pascal Covici, on the occasion of a particularly nasty case of writer's block. WESTERN UNION 1945 JUN 28 PM 4 37 NBQ209 78=NUJ NEWYORK NY 28 422PEvery writer gets them, but it must be maddening for professionals. Off hand, I can't think of an equivalent outside of sports....or the bedroom. And a slightly different kind of letter To whom it may concern, Cara is tardy this morning as a result of a condition known as teenage-ism. Adolescents across our great nation are afflicted, and there is no known cure. Symptoms are multitudinous, but this particular morning, she suffered from an inability to remove herself from her bed, and also felt the need to talk back to her birth-giver. She seems to be recovering her senses after watching her cell phone fly out the car window. Please call me if there is another flare-up. Thank you, Nicole PoppicMany of us have had to deal with teenageritis, and probably have some good war stories, and appropriately disruptive home remedies. Have at it! My favorite is taking the bedroom door off its hinges. Because Grace Slick sure does have a nice voice. Remember....Feed Your Head! The new reality of the academy is one that is antithetical to most of the founding principles of our country. That any of these people have influence over our youth is disgusting enough, but the funny (in a sad, sad sort of way) part is that they are the willing fools who will be first against the wall when their masters take power. Here's an interesting video labelled, perhaps incorrectly, The Biggest Air Refueling Mishaps Caught On Camera. Nothing awful, but it shows rather well how difficult midair refueling must be. And as a bonus there are some really cool planes! When ISIS straps on their bombs, they don't say, "Hey, let the Black person walk by let the Hispanic walk by, and then blow the White guy up." No, they say "I'm going to blow up Americans." They see us as Americans, and the sooner we see each other that way the better. Oh my! What a horrible, racist, Uncle Tom traiter Brunell Donald-Kyei is! Yes, it's amusing, but part of me wants to continue the theme of mocking stupidity in the interest of possibly saving our society from the ignorance and intellectual laziness that seems to be getting worse and worse. The University of California is now officially a joke. The Guevara spawn want no part of it. UC is now disingenuously taking in a lot of dull blacks and Hispanics - as evidenced by, e.g., SAT scores - and a lot of foreign students (mostly from China) who pay out of state fees and thereby fund the whole trainwreck. In state students - whose parents have paid taxes to the intellectual whorehouse that is now UC - with superb records don't bring in the big bucks, so bugger off, honkies.

When I was a little kid growing up in Malaysia, before we moved to a city we lived in a fairly rural area. One day I walked into my parents bedroom and I was probably 6 or 7 and right there in the middle of the bed was a cobra, fully reared and hissing. I don't remember much after that other than I probably screamed like a banshee and luckily my dad was home and the villagers came around and got rid of it. But I was a wreck and till this day, at age 44 remember how it looked. Shudder.

And here's my long contribution on the question of faith from "Life Secrets" by Dr. Henry Foster, a great man of faith who helped his fellow human beings great deal:
Christ said at one time, "Suffer it to be so-Allow it to be so." (Matthew 3:15) So God suffers wickedness in the world He does not approve. He suffers a person to steal, to lie, and to defraud his fellow human beings, but God does not want the person to do this., It is not of God's permission, but his sufferance. We come into contact with these sufferancse of God's providence every day, and we cannot understand them because they are full of evil and iniquity and we get into trouble over them. God has permitted them because he can make them work out for your good. If he could not do that, he would restrain them. This is the rock upon which we may stand. He suffers nothing to come but that which will turn to our account and He will improve us if we take it rightly as from Him. Let the devil rage; let sinners go abroad in the world; let evil forces work their fiendish designs! Our God is at the helm, and he will guard the character of Hid children and bring them forth victorious and better for the discipline that has come to them. It is not lost ground. It is all gain to the Christian, because we trust in the living God. Christ did all the suffering that was necessary for our redemption, but He did not do all the suffering that is necessary for our sanctification, for our development. We must do that ourselves. I'm slowly converting to LEDs as CFLs die and the supply on hand dwindles. There were a lot of extreme markdowns at supermarkets for some unknown reason and I built a good supply for cheap. The biggest problem is the bathroom fixture that takes three GU-24 bulbs. GU is a socket design that replaces the Edison screw in design that has been around since the 1870s. It's a lot safer but still rare in most places. I bought three GU-24 LEDs from Home Depot and one of them went dead within a week. I got my money back on that one but found they no longer stocked the product (I had to order online for in-store pickup for the initial lot) at all. Further searching has shown GU-24 LEDs are surprisingly hard to find and I'm reluctant to order from a place that has no local brick and mortar presence for easy returns after the experience I've already had. OTOH, the remaining CFL in the fixture died last week, and I really don't want to buy another CFL. Posted by: Epobirs at October 02, 2016 11:03 PM (IdCqF) 180

On Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane.
They were in the front and so were their lyrics. The energy and quality of lyrics for their cause has never been expressed, at least popularly, by a conservative musical group. "Volunteers for America" (what a title, what a rallying song), "3/5 of a Mile in 10 seconds", "We should be together" are begging to be re-lyriced and co-opted. And finally it's good if we can celebrate and thank God for the simple things in life. If we're always waiting to win the lottery or find the perfect person to love us we will never be happy. Meanwhile the sun will rise tomorrow, our children will giggle but we won't smile, the choir will sing our favorite hymn, we can have a cup of coffee while we watch a brilliant sunrise, the colors will start coming out in their brilliant attire but because it's ordinary or we've seen or and heard it before or we're dreaming of the future or dreading it we'll miss it altogether.
The book of Lamentations by the prophet Jeremiah is a pretty grim book written about the destruction of Jerusalem His words are angry. His mood bleak and dark. The book is one of near total repair. Finally in chapter 3 light begins to dawn: "His mercies begin afresh every morning." Chapter 3;23 Great is our fickleness but great is God's faithfulness. We may give up, but God cannot. Funny thing, though -- the light bulb ban wasn't mostly environmental types. It was corps like GE who couldn't make a profit on commodity Edison bulbs and wanted something more lucrative. I do like the LEDs I got; the early ones were not so good, but these new ones, from a company that I think went out of business, are great, if the fixture will take them (they're too big for some). But I bought a more power-hungry computer to compensate. Posted by: Splunge at October 02, 2016 11:09 PM (iMxBJ) 195

I generally like LEDs, though I haven't had the best luck with them. I bought a bunch of PAR38s at Costco, for $30 each, and they lasted maybe 3 years before they started dying. It's still possible that they paid for themselves, though, because I was going through $9 halogens at a terrific rate.
Then I bought some dimmable LEDs for a ceiling fan. Killed the controller (in the fan). $200-ish to fix, but I haven't yet because the dang thing is 20 feet in the air. I need a 16-foot step ladder just to change the bulbs, but it's on a four or five foot downrod; no idea how I'm going to remove it for maintenance. The appetite of active teenage boys is a wonder to behold. Their stomachs are bottomless pits. I find it funny that Jefferson Airplane is so beloved by the Left as this big-time counter-culture icon.
You know how the band got started? This is brilliant, by the way. Marty Balin wanted to start a rock band. The first thing he did was put together a group of investors to open up a nightclub. This way, his band would be guaranteed a place to perform. And if it didn't work out, hey, he'd still be part-owner of a San Francisco nightclub. How bourgeois and capitalistic! And also, like I just said, brilliant. Posted by: The Deplorable Prothonotary Warbler at October 03, 2016 12:05 AM (0OG8D) 262

Retired crewchief here. I was once stationed at Luke AFB, AZ where USAF F-16 pilots are trained. I used to hate when they came to the time where they learned how to do aerial refueling. Sometimes half the backbone of the jet was nothing but scrape marks. Looking at them, one would wonder how they missed the aft plexiglass of the canopy.

The family next door had 10 boys and 2 girls. Can you imagine that food bill? Sometimes the mom would just send one of the kids to the Dairy Queen down the street to pick up 4 bags of hamburgers for dinner. I can't blame her. I was friends with the girls and everytime I walked into the house it was like WWIII in there. This is even more mind-blowing by today's standards. They had only 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The girls had twin beds, the boys were all jammed into 1 room with 10 bunk beds. I asked one of the girls how they managed with one bathroom. She said, "we had a schedule for taking showers. And you didn't linger." I thought of them when I heard a woman say recently that she couldn't have a third child although her husband wanted one because they couldn't afford a bigger house and she couldn't possibly expect her kids to share a bedroom. Oldest was out of the house by the time 2nd youngest was born and 2nd oldest was out of the house by the time youngest was born, so 7 kids at home was the most at one time. We had a 4 bedroom house. When we got up to jr. high and high school, the rule was you had to take a shower after practice so you used the school's water instead of the house water. Us girls shared the bathroom when necessary. One taking a shower, one on the toilet, 2 at the mirror, etc. The boys just headed outside to the outhouse. They knew they wouldn't get in there. I had not known that and I just went down a rabbit hole of Airplane stuff. I always thought I was hearing Jeff Airplane when I was listening to SCN's "Wooden Ships" and then I would get confused. So I looked up the song and each band has a version. So who wrote it? Aaaargh. The streams crossed. Crosby and Still wrote it with Kantner (Airplane). Wiki says both versions are considered original. Anyway, the rabbit pun was intentional. Posted by: Bandersnatch at October 03, 2016 12:19 AM (mgbwf) 276

Speaking of sheep, and winter. Warning: Wall o' literary text:
The earth was thirsty for the snow. The winter wheat, in peril of its life, shrank in need to be covered with the soft white blanket. The snow began falling at dusk from a still and milky sky. The flakes at first were large and loose. They slapped against walls, against the boughs and trunks of trees, with the wet impact of a child's kiss. They clung, slipped, melted, and the earth for an hour or more drank them in like rain. With the sudden dark, the air turned cold, the ground stiffened, the snow gathered itself together in compact crystals and fell hard and fast as though the elements had had enough of softness. The sharp particles hissed against window-panes then settled down to a steady pelting. Asa sensed the coming of the snow in mid-afternoon. He never failed in his planning, but because he worked so thoroughly and slowly he was often somewhat behind. He had begun but had not finished the laying of straw in the sheep-shed, the placing of salt pans and the cleaning of feeding troughs. The hired man Joe had moved on early to his winter factory work, probably to be near his sweetheart. Ase needed him now and knew he should have insisted that Joe help complete these preparations before leaving. He could not hold any man against his will. Hurry was impossible for him, but he made a more concentrated effort, tense against the tenseness of the sky, and finished the furnishing of the shed for its wooly winter guests. He filled the watering trough and set out for the high pasture. The dog Shep was anxious, understanding that some routine was about to change. He hesitated when his master did not go in the direction of the cows, followed at his heels uncertainly, then knew in an instant it was the sheep to be brought in, and bounded ahead up the brown hill. The sheep too had felt the impending snow and had taken shelter in the hemlock woods, dangerously near the bog. They were not in sight and Ase was disturbed. He called, "Shepp, sheep, sheep!" The sweet tinkle of the weather's bell answered him. Shep heard it , scented the flock, and was far ahead of Ase, to turn them gently, to drive them from the dark woods, over the hill, down the lane and into the shed, snug and welcoming. The bleats were excited, but hungry after the late poor feeding, the sheep began a contented nibbling on the bean-pods waiting for them. They ate daintily, their velvet noses twitching. Ase heard the first snowflakes plashing against the safe walls, and while there was much work still to be done, stood watching and listening. It gave a man almost more satisfaction to care for, feed, animals than human beings. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 03, 2016 01:19 AM (yddCj) 330

Every writer gets them, but it must be maddening for professionals. Off hand, I can't think of an equivalent outside of sports....or the bedroom.
You're kidding, right? "Writer's block" is something that everyone experiences. It's just that most professions are far more important than writing - the world could have been perfectly well off if Dorothy Parker had never written a thing - and the tasks in those other professions so important to mankind and so difficult that all have just assumed that one only has a very finite and limited amount of new ideas to contribute. In math, or any of the theoretical sciences (real sciences), if one comes up with one great idea then that is a career. Depending on how great the idea is that could easily be an historical career. But very few are ever expected to come up with a second. That's why mathematicians tend to be finished by their early 20s (in terms of any ground-breaking work they might do) and the Fields Medal isn't even considered for anyone over 40. That's not to say that there aren't mathematicians who come up with more than a single great idea or produce past their 20s. There have been some, to be sure, but they are so few that even Barky can count the number in all of history. Writers just whine about it more than anyone else and like to pretend that their work is so, so, SO important. It isn't. Writing is, almost entirely, entertainment. Nothing wrong with entertainment. Man demands to be entertained. But entertainment doesn't take us from the caves to space. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 03, 2016 01:36 AM (zc3Db) 333

Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, October 03, 2016. On this day in 1789 George Washington made the first Thanksgiving Day proclamation as directed by the continental congress. It was an annual event for a President to declare the holiday until 1863 when Lincoln made it a permanent federal holiday on the last Thursday of November using his goose feather pen and telegraph. It stayed that way until FDR came along in 1939 and used his "jaunty" pipe to move it to the 4th Thursday in November under the dubious theory of making a longer spending time for Christmas as one of his many failed attempts to end the Great Depression which he created in the first place. I am surprised the Choom has not moved it to Oct 31st to celebrate Black Lives Rule Everything and then send the corrupt DOJ to every State that fails to adhere to it.

The Trump campaign has responded to the NYT's illegal publishing of his tax returns.
The only news here is that the more than 20-year-old alleged tax document was illegally obtained, a further demonstration that the New York Times, like establishment media in general, is an extension of the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party and their global special interests, the campaign said in a statement. I would say that the NYT better have their lawyers looking into some kind of attempt to defend a civil suit for invasion of privacy and violation of the privacy act. And that statement above is dead on truth and Trump is not the run of the mill RNCe stooge who takes shit lying down. http://bit.ly/2dCUJyJ Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at October 03, 2016 05:29 AM (mpXpK) 400

And finally it's good if we can celebrate and thank God for the simple things in life. If we're always waiting to win the lottery or find the perfect person to love us we will never be happy. Meanwhile the sun will rise tomorrow, our children or grandchildren will giggle but we won't smile, the choir will sing our favorite hymn, we can have a cup of coffee while we watch a brilliant sunrise, the colors will start coming out in their brilliant attire but because it's ordinary or we've seen or and heard it before or we're dreaming of the future or dreading it we'll miss it altogether.

Trust, once broken, is almost impossible to rebuild. Disband the FBI. If we need any of its functions preserved, they should be taken on by the US Marshals Service, with entirely new personnel and procedures. This is one of those days when my laptop just hates me.
Sometimes when I'm using the trackpad something random will re-size the page. So far today in about 20 minutes of use it's happened 957 times. Just swipe to move the cursor and everything gets smaller. Or bigger. Freakin' box is possessed. Posted by: Bandersnatch at October 03, 2016 06:24 AM (mgbwf) 421

I just love a comment I read from an elected Dem rep in VA. The fact that fraudulent voter registrations have been discovered does not mean there is vote fraud because 'nobody voted with those names' as if fraudulently registering to vote means you will not use that name to vote, and the clown simply ignored the fraudulent registration issue at all. But that's a typical lying PoS Dem for you.

Once they have a free hand anybody they want to can vote away and since votes are not recorded by name and there is no way to tell if someone votes under another identity or not. Margin of fraud just got bigger. ____________________ AZ has been fighting this battle for years. Of course illegal aliens vote in the U.S. illegally. Why wouldn't they? They want to keep all their "free" benefits flowing, and of course they want to remain in the U.S. The idea that we could trust foreigners who are in the country illegally and breaking numerous laws on a regular basis to not lie on a voter registration form (when they know there is a 0% probability that they will ever be caught and/or prosecuted for the perjury) was always ludicrous. Here in AZ (and most likely happening all over the country), the "community organizers" who register illegals openly instruct them to lie, and tell them that if they are ever questioned (which is highly unlikely), they should simply say they misunderstood the question "Are you a U.S. citizen?" since English is not their first language. Because perjury is a specific intent crime, that makes it almost impossible to prosecute, and most prosecutors aren't interested in prosecuting perjury cases in the first place. Of course, the left knew all along the illegals were/are voting in large numbers, which is why they continually refuse to provide states with the information states need to clean up their voter registration rolls. And it's why they sue and sue and sue any state, like AZ, that tries to require voter registration applicants to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering. It also goes along with idiots who say there was no fraud because no one has been convicted. If the corrupt dems dont prosecute, you can't convict. Posted by: Cicero Skip at October 03, 2016 06:49 AM (FIrEF) 435

If we're always waiting to win the lottery or find the perfect person to love us we will never be happy.
Fenelon, are you familiar with the now-defunct comic strip Cul De Sac? One of its characters was pondering his life and said "I wish I could be happy whenever it's now." That's how I always feel. Thank you for your advice and spiritual wisdom. Here's a story and picture: The story for everyone: Gary Cooper began his career in silent movies, but his popularity didn't really start until 1929s The Virginian. A few years down the line, Cooper and a friend decided to have dinner at a Hollywood hot spot, but when they arrived, they were told there were no tables free and they would have to wait. Cooper's friend nudged him. "Go on, Coop, tell them who you are!" Cooper shook his head. "If I have to tell them who I am, then I ain't." Now a picture for the 'ettes: Cooper in 1958s Man of the West: goo.gl/nEKvd6 Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at October 03, 2016 06:56 AM (X6fMO) Posted by: FenelonSpoke, redeemed and redeemable at October 03, 2016 06:56 AM (EnGQE) 440

Hillary Clinton can't even do simple things like use email or be sick without creating a huge, secretive, scandalous coverup. (Reminds me in a way of my always trying to get rich quick father who could trigger a series of lawsuits and bankruptcies with every business venture, large or small) Just wait until she has her hands on the levers of power. It will be like nothing this country has ever seen or imagined.

>>>>>I would say that the NYT better have their lawyers looking into some
kind of attempt to defend a civil suit for invasion of privacy and violation of the privacy act. And that statement above is dead on truth and Trump is not the run of the mill RNCe stooge who takes shit lying down. . . . .They have already said they had the obligation to publish the returns because of the greater public need or some such nonsense. I am fairly certain that those three pages are all they have. They are the first page from his State tax Returns, one each for CT, NY and NJ for 1995, not his federal returns. State tax law is not as harsh as Federal on the unauthorized release of tax returns and the NYT knows that. If they had his actual Federal return I am fairly certain they would not publish it as Trump would have an ironclad case against them and they would cease to exist when he sued them. Good morning Horde. My task for today is to try to get out of jury duty. I've moved out of the county that summoned me, so I hope that will do it. I have my lease agreement for the new place, along with utility bills. I hope that will do the trick, because it's the same week as Rev's vacation and we plan on going to Galena.

Oh. yes. We took the door off the hinges AND we made all four kids sleep in the same room. One was being a complete bratbitch, and they were being mean to each other in general. So, off came the door of the oldest...and they all slept together for two weeks. I used to tell the girls to check their teenager shit at the door. If they didn't, I sent them back out and locked the door. I never had time for excuses. Not with four. And my baby boy will be 17. He was a quick study and is always pleasant and thoughtful of others.

In Los Angeles County less than 30% respond to jury summons. It's true that you could get arrested; it's also true that in the entire state's history, no one ever has. I have a major county courthouse (Robert Blake, the Menendez Bros trials) less than a mile from me, but every summons involves driving into downtown L.A. during morning rush hour, finding a place to park, finding the correct building and the jury room etc., then hanging around all day with my granny infirmities. I'm 63, with diabetes, IBS, a chronically broken foot and a few other goodies. I just can't do it, but the only way to officially get out of it is with a doctor's note. I don't have health insurance, so that note could cost me upwards of $100. I have no good options, so ...
