Two-For Journalists

One is a zombie the other, well, you know............

Since you've been good little 'rons & ettes..............No Yoko.

Two-For Models

2formodel.jpg

One is a zombie, and the other well, a fiancee of a MLB player.

Two-For Artists, Paint & Music

Music by David Bowie.

Paintings by Bowie.

Music by Captain Beefheart

Paintings by Beefheart.

Two artists who are no longer with us. A zombie theme?

Two-For Self Improvement

Breast size enhancement through hypnosis?

The first step to improvement. Are you a jerk?

Two-For Government Ineptitude and Down Right Incompetence

Meet the little brown shirts. Thank you Nanny State.

For example, students from Park High School’s SLAC in Livingston created signage for the school cafeteria to promote fruit selection,” the post continued. “This included a life-size poster of the basketball coach giving out an apple with the caption ‘Got fruit? Tastes almost as good as victory.

Have a Medium Rare cheeseburger and be a champ. None of this almost shit.

If these bombers had been white like Timothy McVeigh, we never would have heard the end of it.

Two-For Men

3 types of men.

There are three kinds of men. The very few who learn by reading. The several who learn by observation. The rest of them need to pee on the electric fence to find out for themselves.

Divorce lawyers hardest hit.

Two-For Foreign Stuff

Canadian $$$$$$.

Ordering beer in a foreign land.

Two-For Thoughts on Athletes

MLB lost an All-Star this past weekend.

An older story about Jose Fernandez from 2013. He had dreams. Big dreams.

Fernández, who turns 21 on July 31, said he will never forget the day he boarded a boat for his fourth attempt in 2008 to flee Cuba. He and his family were determined to leave at all cost to reunite with Jiménez, who had left in 2005 after making 14 attempts.

During that journey something happened that left a mark on Fernández for the rest of his life.

After escaping flying bullets from Cuban coast guard boats, and later in the solitude of the ocean on their way to Mexico, somebody said that a person had fallen in the water. Fernández did not hesitate and jumped in. When he finally had the fallen person in his arms he was shocked to realize that he had just saved his own mother, Maritza.

The 2nd thought. F*CK YOU Colin Kaepernick you ungrateful ignorant spoiled brat.

Two-For Government Punishments

You can't make this sh!t up. Who knew solar was dirty?

The department states the settlement money will include research and community outreach. Why aren't rate payers given a break?

Police Departments have to stop making unforced errors.

Two-For ISIS

We’re not mentally ready to accept that we are at war with Islam.

The J.V. Team certainly knows how to plan.

Two-For Music

Ever wonder why new music is released on Friday?

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

Two-For Global Warming

Global temperatures for the past 2 million years. Yes, it appears they used the S.W.A.G. method.

"This assumes that all of the temperature change over the ice-age cycles arose from the greenhouse-gas change," Alley told Ars. "But, we have high confidence that the ice ages were driven by features of Earth’s orbit and that the temperature would have changed (just not as much) if the greenhouse-gas forcing had not changed." Alley went on to say that "the 'sensitivity' calculated in the new paper is an upper limit, because we know that some of the temperature change was not caused by greenhouse gases."

Climate change caused migration out of Africa?Wonder what industry caused that to happen?

Two-For Genius Awards

Genius Award. Part I.

Genius Award. Part II.

Two-For Feel Good Stories of The Day

Feel good story of the day. Part I.

Feel good story of the day. Part II.

Do you like a challenge? Here is one, The Group.

Have a news tip? Spare change? A lost puppy? You know what to do.

Asking for reparations because of something that happened to your great great great grandparent is sort if like demanding an inheritance. And that would have been passed down through each generation. And as we know, every time money is inherited, it gets taxed.

178 144 Oh I loved Bowie, but it's not an argument you can make. If he didn't move you he didn't.

He moved me. Voice, persona, choices in experimentation.

I will call him a genius but that won't persuade anyone who didn't already think so.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 27, 2016 11:08 PM (mgbwf)

I heard him a lot when I was in college in the 70s. I only bought a couple of his albums and didn't really follow him much after that. I liked some of his songs but he wasn't quite my cup of tea for the most part.

But he was a great talent, no question about it. I freely admit that.

There were a couple who were real prissy, had to be dressed to the nines all the time and wore heels all the damn time. They weren't even all that ridiculous stripper high either. As they got older, their feet were just awful. Deformed and just a mess.

343 Moar Over-rated
David Bowie or Tom Petty?

Petty by default. He's written some great songs and put out some terrific albums, but he wasn't an innovator like Bowie , who created, inspired or popularized entire genres of music. Bands took their entire sounds off of one Bowie album or song. Not everything he did was great. In fact he put out a few nearly unlisten-able albums, but it doesn't matter. His music was always interesting.

His paintings? Not so much.

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at September 28, 2016 12:08 AM (DW+jj)

There is a reason why companies should make employees take at least one full week of vacation a year, any employee embezeling from the company will have their house of cards fall on them.

Greenspan gave us the commercial real estate bubble of the early 90's. As a Realtor I say "fuck you very much" for that because that gave us a continuing education requirement of 16 hours per licensing period.

Not to be outdone, he gave us the "dotcom" bubble of the late 90's which gave us false hope of paying down the deficit while spending like drunken sailors.

When that bubble burst, he decided to pump up the residential housing market. Giving loans to people for a house that cost ten times their yearly income is not a good idea.

It's the damn heels; they'll destroy feet eventually. I've seen it in the family with some of my aunts. There were a couple who were real prissy, had to be dressed to the nines all the time and wore heels all the damn time. They weren't even all that ridiculous stripper high either. As they got older, their feet were just awful. Deformed and just a mess.

415 Chem,
Masa harina is just instant corn tortilla flour. I think I paid $2 for a big 4 lb bag. Just add water to make tortilla dough.

I don't have a tortilla press -yet - so they came out a little thick. And a little dry/crumbly. But WAY tastier than the stale store bought discs.
Seems it would benefit from a little fat added in (crisco?), but I followed the directions.

If I can't find a tortilla press at one of the local thrift stores, I'll be hillbilly engineering one together some time this week.

Fernandez saved his mom, endured danger to come to America and live his dream and he loved this country, becoming a proud US citizen.

448 They've actually done studies on male behavior to women in heels vs not. The results show that us men go wild about heels. You know the general "acting stupid" behavior we do? Well, heels make that all the more.

For example. Take a woman well dressed and have her pretend to doing man on the street interviews. Men would agree to participate only 60ish% of the time for a woman in flats. In high heels, 90%+ of the time.

"Helping" behavior they call it, also increases. In heels, she'll get doors opened and all that stuff much more than in flat shoes.

Oh, and a women in heels will be approached in a singles bars in half the time, on average as a woman in flats. Take the same woman, dressed the same otherwise. In heels, a man will come up and hit on her in half the time as in flat shoes.

And, we're more likely to believe a woman in heels. If a woman is selling something, we'll buy her pitch much more than a woman in flats.

This effect is only with us men. It has zero effect on other women.

Something in the air today.

First a regular at the gym collapses with a seizure during the weight/cardio class. (apparently he was OK insofar as the EMTs decided he was not in danger and moved him out but not in an emergency rush)

Then the next-door neighbor calls to tell me there's a 5-foot rattler in his backyard. "Discovered" by his beautiful little 6-yr old daughter walking by it - and screaming. (fortunately his beautiful smallish white English labrador didn't "discover" it first)

Neighbor killed it with a shovel, and thoughtfully asked me if I wanted it for grilling. Declined, but noted the last rattler I knew of killed hereabouts, when I was in 6th grade, by my brother with home-made snakeload out of his Ruger .357 Blackhawk, actually did get grilled up (yes, tasted like chicken).

Kinda sad to hear there's one less rat-eater, though. Haven't seen any snake for 6 years, or a rattler for 30, and they're the best rat-control nature ever devised.

Chi, for tortillas it's just add water to the instant masa, I think. Proportions matter, where you are shouldn't be too tough to keep the moistness right as you press out the tortillas, other climates you need to cover the bowl with a wet towl.

For tamales it's lard and masa, again a question of proportions til you get the consistency you're desiring.

Been years since I've done either. Did tamales from scratch several times, they were very good, but not even close to being good "enough" to justify the hours and hours of work. Living in occupied Mexico as I do, doing my own tortillas would be silly. Actually the uncooked flour tortillas available in stores, that you finish on a hot skillet, are very good. And around here you can get stacks of uncooked corn ones too, finish 'em the same way.

473 Apropos of nothing in particular, it just occurred to me why I've been chasing disk drive failures around in circles all afternoon.

The system BIOS thinks that its five SATA drives are SATA0, SATA1, SATA2, SATA3, and SATA4. These are then mapped to /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, etc.

So, I got errors on sdc and sdd, went to the drives marked SATA3 and SATA4, and changed 'em out. Got weirder errors on more drives, and changed those out.

Thing is, the cable and bay for SATA0 were being used by the BIOS and motherboard's SATA1, 'cause I'd slipped my SSD into SATA0 to boot from. The cable and bay for SATA1 was being occupied by the second spinning hard disk, SATA2.

I had gotten so involved with stuffing all the goodies into this box that I'd forgotten the basics. So, tomorrow, it's tear it all apart and rebuild -- and all the drives I thought were bad are probably good, and the ones I thought were good are probably bad.

Note this is not always a conscious thing, you know specifically looking and judging the shoes. It's more of a subliminal thing. A person walks in and you see the whole package, feet to head. The shoes are a component of that whole picture that gets formed in the mind.

And keena, well for sure, one thing I always figured was likely with a tee-totalling (and also caffeine-free?) monomaniacal type like T-Rump is coke use. Right. Obviously.

Thanks, rhomboid.

Yeah, just water masa. I guess I needed more water? And to press them a touch thinner, I think.

Pretty sure I could find fresh masa or tortillas easily enough around here, too, but, I like learning new stuff.

And this is cheaper than day-old bread, so double bonus.

Posted by: Chi at September 28, 2016 01:08 AM (JKxHe)

One of the things about flour and water (like pasta) is that it has to be worked a specific amount for the gluten to start making it plastic and malleable. All the funky shapes of pasta arise from this -- but if you make pasta by hand, you know that it ain't doin' no fancy shapes before you run it through the rollers a half-dozen times. And you can feel when it makes the transition.

I'd guess you could do just about anything to press the tortillas (bottom of a skillet on a cutting board?), but only after the dough has been worked.

But I understood both the British and the Japanese sides of the movie.

489 449 They've actually done studies on male behavior to women in heels vs not.

492 And since I had a near-miss getting to work, I'm going to say that when we finally destroy the education-industrial complex, outlaw teacher's unions, and restore sanity to the educational system, we really need to bring back driver's ed.

It's common sense that when two lanes are narrowing into one, the one with arrows on it is the one doing the merging. When your lane is merging, it means that you yield to traffic already in the lane, which has the right of way. It does not mean stomp the gas to try to get around them, when there's not enough room to do so.

I don't know who the hell is teaching today's drivers, but they're doing a piss poor job of it. We can make room for it in along with civics / American Gov't, by removing all of the SJW nonsense and global warming propaganda from the curriculum.

Two commoners are standing around gabbing, and one says, "I've always wondered -- people from Italy are Italians; people from Spain are Spaniards; people from England are English.....so what should citizens of the Kingdom of Id be called?"

Just then, a soldier passing by points out a "keep off the grass" sign, and shouts: "keep on the #$@%^ path, you idiots!!!!!"

And the commoner who was speaking says, "never mind."

So, the tl;dr version of @474 is: "I'm an idiot."

Fenelon, that's a good find. There were a handful of courageous bishops who boldly challenged the Nazis - at least on a few of their outrages. Sadly not so much, or at least not as boldly, on others (such as the anti-semitic policies inside Germany, or Germany's expansionist war at least up to Barbarossa).

In fact the radical and energized Nazi local/regional officials often got way ahead of Hitler, who clearly preferred to wait until the war was won or close to it to smash the Church, which he fully intended to do. During the war he feared the effect on morale, esp. in Bavaria.

Just after Hitler had attacked Russia he had to rein in the Bavarian gauleiter after he had provoked an uproar by having crosses removed from schools. The decision was reversed.

I brought him back for 3 face-to-face interviews, the last being to offer him the job.
Fast forward a few months, and we had become best friends. I mean Best. Friends. (Guarandamntee that I could call him at 3 AM. & say "shovel. Lime. Now. - he would've been at my house in an hour with a shovel & zero questions)

Anyway, one day we were kayaking the James river, drunk and floating, pretending to fish, when he starts cussing me out about making him drive an hour to his Dad's house to borrow the family shoes THREE FUCKING TIMES for those job interviews.
He, his two brothers, and his Dad all shared one pair of black leather shoes. The Family Shoes. How did they go to church? ??

I think he was even more pissed when I told him he could've walked in the door barefoot and I would've hired him.

BTW, If you ever visited Kings Dominion in Virginia between, say, 1980 & 2000, and met Barney Rubble - you met Bruce.
I'd give up Tucker for a copy of a picture of him in that costume...
I miss that man dearly. God hold you Bruce.

544 East Germany/East Berlin lacked that rebuilding process by twenty or thirty years. The Soviets did them no favors. Other than creating the Stasi, who were just as bad as the Gestapo and SS.

Posted by: Deplorable Old Blue at September 28, 2016 01:46 AM (9iR5/)

The areas around the platzes were kept very clean, with large expanses of tiled common areas, nice hotels, big wide streets (but no cars) some restaurants, etc. The rest of E. Berlin was a wasteland of old dilapidated buildings and Soviet style apartment dwellings. You could see it all once you got more than a few stories up.

On our tour coach we started to notice that we were passing the same buildings but on different sides. They were driving us in circles to give the appearance that the nice areas were much larger than the reality.

It was a grey, dismal place.

Crap, forgot to mention the best thing.

When trains pull into stations in other parts of Europe there is general mayhem as people get off quickly, pass luggage out the windows, etc.

As the train got close to the station it passed many buildings on both sides, all of which were riddled with bullet impact marks, holes from artillery and tank shells, etc. Some of it just rubble. When we got to the station there were men in military uniform holding leashed German shepherd dogs, all standing rigid at attention. Even the dogs. No one on the train moved, not sure if it was okay to disembark.

That's most true. They're not reacting to the shoes themselves (but fetishizing high heels and women's shoes in general is a thing, but that's not what's going on here), but what the shoes do.

It's not just legs, but posture as well and the walk and all that. It sends stronger "I'm sexual" signals to men. They enhance things our low level circuits get excited by.

Yeah ... but that's one retarded tribe (or society or whatever it was). I was always waiting for the body modification crowd to start getting into that. Funny part is that it would probably be the tat and gauge guys doing it It would be a hoot to see that become a fad, though. I'd laugh my head off.

609 Bowie "Heroes"

There's a great video on YT showing how that massive wall of sound was put together. Producer Tony Visconti used an early form of gating - gated vocals. A few years later, gated drums would be all the rage. Then, Visconti had Robert Fripp's guitar and Brian Eno's synth grow louder and louder and louder, till Bowie was practically screaming at the end just to be heard over the din. It worked. Probably his best, most emotional vocal ever.

Scary Monsters is my favorite Bowie album, song-for-song. Since his death I've discovered the wonderful 1. Outside album, which is somewhat "arty" and "difficult" but just filled with incredible stuff. The Buddha of Suburbia is great too, reminding me of Low and Heroes (the album) in its mix of songs and evocative instrumentals.

What a career. And to top it all off, he stayed out of politics and just shut up and sang. My kinda artist.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, September 28, 2016. On this day in 1951 CBS made the first color televisions available for sale to the general public, but the product was discontinued less than a month later. It was doomed to failure by two things, it was a complicated and expensive system in which few affiliates wanted to spend money adopt and government interference. The government halted its production and promotion "temporarily" due to the Korean War. In 1951 we were still feeling the effects of the FDR dictatorship.

649 And finally with regard to M.H.'s link to the bombers.

If these bombers had been white like Timothy McVeigh, we never would have heard the end of it.

Probably so, but that is only because the MFM has been successful in classifying McVeigh as a "right wing radical evil Christian Conservative". You hardily ever hear mentioned that when his car was taken it was full of Neo-Nazi literature marking him, if not a member, at least a supporter of the Nazi movement. But, of course then the MFM and the Dems (BIRM) have always maintained that the Nazis were a fascist "right wing" organization. Yes they were Fascists but were definitely not right wing as it applies to the US. The Nazis were a socialist party and that is even included in their very name. In American politics socialism is far left and usually used by liberals to avoid the term communism, which gained a bad rep in the 50s. So the press will continue to say McVeigh was far right, when in fact he was a socialist, just like the Democrats.

I could never understand why they persist in using those 9V batteries. Nothing uses those anymore. In any case, I replaced both of my smoke detectors a few weeks ago with some new ones that use a permanent non-replaceable LiOH battery. Thing that got me was not her list of things she hated, since she obviously was crazy as a Cyborg, but the fact that always somebody agreed with her prohibitions. Must be a yearning deep in human heart to stop other people from doing as they please. Rules, laws -- always for other fellow. A murky part of us, something we had before we came down from the trees, and failed to shuck when we stood up. Because not one of those people said: "Please pass this so that I won't be able to do something I know I should stop." Nyet, tovarishchee, was always something they hated seeing neighbors doing. Stop them "for their own good" -- not because speaker claimed to be harmed by it. ~ Robert Heinlein, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress

If it is hard-wired through the ceiling it may have some power running from the breaker box. Check that and make sure there is no transformer in the attic that feeds it.

My front and rear doorbells were fed from a breaker in the power panel by pig-tailing in a feeder wire to an already used breaker. That wire fed a transformer hanging lose behind the main panel's cover plate. I am glad I found that the first year I lived here. That was AC 101 don't do. But at least the transformer wasn't in the attic. That is a major source of house fires.

That wire fed a transformer hanging lose behind the main panel's cover plate. I am glad I found that the first year I lived here. That was AC 101 don't do. But at least the transformer wasn't in the attic. That is a major source of house fires.

I'll watch it, thanks for the tip.. I have great respect for electricity

684 681 .If everyone is still parsing it today means it was pretty much a tie IMO.

I said that there was no way to tell who wins these "non-debates" now. The best a Republican do is try not to step on his own "d*ck" in an obvious way while the phony moderator does everything he can do to make him break out the track shoes. And even then the opposition will make up a fake track shoes incident and the phony media will promote it 24/7 for at least a week.

685 Prior to electricity, most people slept twice with a break of several hours in between which shortened or lengthened with the seasons. They were called "first" and "second" sleeps. In between, folks would read (special books were even printed with short stories meant to fill the between-sleeps period,) have a light snack, work on small projects, or even have sex. (did they call it "between-sleeps wood"?)

This also worked out well since the fire usually needed to be tended during the night anyhow. When life was dictated by the setting and rising of the sun and the need to tend the fire during the night, it made sense. Especially during long winter nights, I would imagine.

Or it could be that it's just a more natural way for humans to sleep.

I grew up near the Canadian border, so in addition to the fuzzy UHF channels we also had fuzzy broadcast channels from Hamilton and Toronto.

Adding it up, there were more fuzzy channels than good ones. But watching Hockey Night in Canada on the Canadian feed was pretty cool.

688 The first show I saw in color was Star Trek. It was 1968 or 1969. I still remember being so amazed at how different everything looked. I remember being sad to learn that batman's getup was purple.

689 From the sidebar ("This!"). Simultaneously, a scary but still very important piece to read:

We have stepped over the threshold of a revolution. It is difficult to imagine how we might step back, and futile to speculate where it will end. Our ruling class's malfeasance, combined with insult, brought it about. Donald Trump did not cause it and is by no means its ultimate manifestation. Regardless of who wins in 2016, this revolution's sentiments will grow in volume and intensity, and are sure to empower politicians likely to make Americans nostalgic for Donald Trump's moderation.

690 LA Times tracker has La Grand Orange up 4.1% this morning-- that's a daily tracker so it's post-debate, &... It's the highest lead yet for the billionaire from outer space.

What the heck? He mostly talked about his job, his broadcasting gigs, and his wife's travels. I don't ever recall him getting into it with anybody ever. Maybe I missed something along the way. I'll have to read the thread, but I suppose his comments have been erased.

Kate Hudson, definitely. She has a certain warmth, and also has that breathing thing going on.

698 If you want to live in the most liberal city in the US, move to St Louis:

A big tip of the beret to St. Louis, which has managed to out-left the
liberals in Berkeley, Calif., Cambridge, Mass., and Boulder, Colo.

So order the moving van, and get ready to live in the progressive paradise.

I was in Europe on a month long, high school study tour and spent 4 or 5 days in East Berlin. It's the most depressing and paranoid place I've ever visited.

I was there in 1965 and they still had not cleared the rubble out from behind Unter der Linden which had boxy glass office buildings with hardly anyone in them...Potemkin main drag if you will.
