Nate Silver's site now says Trump is 54.5% likely to win, and Hillary is just is at just 45.5%. Oddly, those two figures sum to 100% -- yet I was told this was not a "Binary" election!!! I don't understand. Update: Another poll came out, the Monmouth Poll, showing Hillary ahead 46-42, which might be why Nate Silver has now adjusted Trump's odds downwards to 50.9%.Comments

Doubt it. Silver's the one who gave them hope in 2012 when Romney seemed to be leading in national polls by saying "look at the state polls, look at the state polls." They'll be hoping for whom to come up with some magical figures showing Hillary ahead. It's only if a Trump victory becomes glaringly obvious that they'll start lashing out at him and others. The audience for tonight's debate will be huge, everyone wants to see if Hillary will collapse on live TV. The questions are irrelevant. IF Hillary gets any difficult questions she will give a non-answer and no one will ask a followup. Trump will be on a short leash and will appear 'presidential' Hillary's team will pump her full of more meds than an East German lady swimmer and after the debate the media will declare her 'fit for presidential duty' On seeing and hearing this voters will believe it and Hillary gets a big post debate bump and will lead in national polls by 2% (whithin the margin or error)

There is a lot of money riding on cheap foreign labor and using that to access the US market until the US market collapses.

No, Silver's been calling it (mostly) correctly for eight plus years. It's my understanding that--true enough--Silver is a Democrat and leans Left. He is also a pollster whose business depends on getting it right most of the time.
Besides, we've been hearing about rigged polls conducted by supposedly reputable firms every election cycle. Presumably, rigged polls can be used as a tool to suppress votes or create a bandwagon effect or shore up a failing candidate or weaken the credibility of another, but I imagine the overall effect of poll tampering isnegligible. I don't know for sure.
One truth does emerge with polling controversies, though: the side that whines about it most is the losing side, always.

I put up a long list of scandals she was involved in, with brief summaries of the details - WH travel office, FBI files, Chinagate, pardons, "lost" records, Commerce junkets, Lincoln Bedroom renting, destroyed female WJC accusers, prosecution of Billy Dale, jailing of the Youtube video maker to continue selling her Benghazi lie, etc. - and of the various sham investigations; lack of oversight; layers of fall guys / flunkies / buffers; and misuse of government office to consolidate power, destroy her enemies, and shield her from oversight.
I then pointed out that I don't like or trust Trump, but that since half his own party hates his guts, he's more likely to be kept in check than she is, whereas she'll weaponize the entire federal bureaucracy and the courts Congress will just let it slide. My conclusion: I hate that Trump is the only thing standing between Hillary and the presidency, but at this point he's all we've got.

You're right, he's losing on that map. Silver uses, I believe, a bunch of computer simulations to run thousands of possible outcomes based on current polling ranges (and in some models, background conditions like economy etc.) If Trump is losing on the map but winning a majority of the computer simulations, that means that he is very close behind in several states and is therefore upsetting HRC in at least one state that ends up being the tipping point in a majority of simulated election results.
If you look at 538's full projection, most of Trump's leaner states have him with a higher % to win them than HRC has to win *her* leaner states right now. That simply tracked with the national polls, one month ago the situation was reversed and hers were all safe while Trump had a 30% chance of losing Georgia.

I agree. The big flaw with all the stuff they throw at Trump is that exact problem. If you build him up to be a monster and he comes across as likable and presidential, it all works in reverse. People respond to impressions and visuals more than anything else these days at least (maybe always) and all the whining yelling and articles on facebook in the world won't reverse that impression.
All Trump has to do is not go whackadoo or seem to threaten Hillary in any way. He has no problem with that, as long as he's on the winning side.
Hillary has to come across as reasonable, normal, healthy, and charismatic. She has to seem likable and sane. That's a pretty high bar for her.

Modern medicine is wonderful, but I doubt it's so advanced they can calibrate things to the drop and get exactly the right reaction every time. Easier to do when you're estimating how much general anesthesia to use when putting a child to sleep as compared to a 240 lb. man. And even then mistakes are made.
This is figuring out just the right medication for a woman who will be standing under hot lights for 2 hours. Much trickier.

Minutes later there is a blissful pause in the horking and snorking. So moderator asks Harridan of Hell an easy question. She attempts to take a wheezy breath to answer. Squeeky strained voice rasps out a few words and she then goes into another coughing fit, nastier than prior as you can hear mucous rattling in upper bronchi between wheezing (she may try to spew into glass at this point, grossing out millions).
The debate will continue this way until she either falls off elevated podium due to a seizure of some type or a true done fall out medical emergency (keep in mind that these coughing and hacking jags of her's raise blood pressure, which is not good for the ole clot in her head sinus thingamabob).
There is no way I am missing this. If she coughs and rolls her wonky eye and even falls off podium the MSM will declare her the victor...even if she does not answer one single question.

Trump does everything "wrong": He physically menaces Hillary, he acts rude to her, he spouts factual errors, he uses violent metaphors, he employs sarcasm that can be willfully misinterpreted as literal, he casually sneaks promotional advertising statements about his resorts and branded products, he uses hand-gestures like Mussolini, he has nothing coherent to say about various foreign policy questions, he contradicts himself, etc. etc., while Hillary goes gaffe-free the entire night -- and even after all that, TRUMP STILL GETS A POST_DEBATE BOOST IN THE POLLS.

Not my job to track his career. Or Silver's. My point is that both CAC and Silver come from political communities, for lack of a better term. Both were drawn to polling because they're both politically oriented, albeit from opposite ends of the spectrum.Both rely on their respectivereputation for professionalism and integrity to stay in business. Basically, the premise of the book is that we are now in a technological age where those people who can use the hardcore technological tools to create value, create new tools (languages, programs) or have the capital to invest in technology are going to do very well.
Unfortunately, this is happening at the same time as all of today's networking applications has steadily eroded people's ability to concentrate and do the deep concentrating ("Deep Work") necessary to succeed.

But there are books out there "The Shallows" (which I haven't read) and others where people argue that people's attention spans have drastically declined since the appearance of all of these tools.
I think that unless kids have strict parents, or someone that forces them to unplug, it's pretty easy for them to be left on the internet, hitting refresh over and over on their favorite blog, hoping for new comments.

the number of D votes because you can't poll the dead pollsters WILL

.The latest Wapo poll for PA had a D+12 sample and that one shows Trump up by 1. obama only got a D+7 in 2008 and hillary isn't going to come anywhere close to that.
Nate got famous for predictions because he didn't just use the poll results. He went in and parsed the heck out of every poll's methodology used and balanced that mathematically with previous election turnouts and results.
In essence, he unskewed each and every poll and came up with the correct results more often than not.
The left loved him in 2008 and 2012. Not sure that is going to happen this time. He needs to watch his back.

I don't doubt that the Fed is going to raise interest rates. They have to at some point. You can't just keep printing money forever. But in the context of President Trump cutting regulations, killing Obamacare, ending waste on green energy/climate change, and increasing spending on military, homeland security (including the wall) and infrastructure (and he hasn't said anything about cutting anywhere), then it might actually be a wise move for the Fed to raise rates, because all those other things are likely to lead to blowout growth in demand and possibly, therefore, to inflation.
