538: Trump Now Is Favored to Win This Election Over Hillary

From zombie, who says "the entire left just sharted."

Nate Silver's site now says Trump is 54.5% likely to win, and Hillary is just is at just 45.5%.

Oddly, those two figures sum to 100% -- yet I was told this was not a "Binary" election!!! I don't understand.

Update: Another poll came out, the Monmouth Poll, showing Hillary ahead 46-42, which might be why Nate Silver has now adjusted Trump's odds downwards to 50.9%.

Doubt it. Silver's the one who gave them hope in 2012 when Romney seemed to be leading in national polls by saying "look at the state polls, look at the state polls." The audience for tonight's debate will be huge, everyone wants to see if Hillary will collapse on live TV. The questions are irrelevant. IF Hillary gets any difficult questions she will give a non-answer and no one will ask a followup. Trump will be on a short leash and will appear 'presidential' Hillary's team will pump her full of more meds than an East German lady swimmer and after the debate the media will declare her 'fit for presidential duty' On seeing and hearing this voters will believe it and Hillary gets a big post debate bump and will lead in national polls by 2% (whithin the margin or error)

194 In the 1992 election, [Perot] received 18.9% of the popular vote, approximately 19,741,065 votes (but no electoral college votes), making him the most successful third-party presidential candidate in terms of the popular vote since Theodore Roosevelt in the 1912 election. Unlike Perot, however, some other third party candidates since Roosevelt have won electoral college votes. (Robert La Follette had 13 in 1924, Strom Thurmond had 39 in 1948, George Wallace had 46 in 1968 and John Hospers won one in 1972, albeit from a faithless elector).

Yeah, given their constant whining about money in politics, you'd think they would consider Trump a superhero. He's winning despite being outspent by a huge margin!

But I had a discussion with a couple of lefties on this topic and here's what they finally admitted:

They don't give a damn how much money is actually spent. They just want it to be government funds, not private. They want all campaign financing to come from the government instead of from the people.

The audience for tonight's debate will be huge, everyone wants to see if Hillary will collapse on live TV. The questions are irrelevant.

Because it's designed that way. Silver is a cheat who games the numbers shamelessly and will always -- always -- have something he will point to after the game is over to prove he was "right".

It this case, the to do is about the predicted result of his polls+ forecast, a Romulan cloaked assemblage of weighted and aged poll date, along with a dog's breakfast of other numbers tossed on and off at whim. Then run thru a Monte Carlo simulation.

That's what's showing a Trump win atm. There's also stuff on there that says the exact opposite. It's designed to be that way.

Maybe not. If Trump is elected, the Fed will tank the economy. Count on it. The Media, the Dems and the GOP-e will blame it on opposition to immigration and 'free trade', i.e. letting the multinationals access the US market from the Third World with cheap labor and no regulation.

Unlike with Bush, the Media will not play it that Obama's Bubble burst. It will be all on Trump.

There is a lot of money riding on cheap foreign labor and using that to access the US market until the US market collapses.

I'd take a Johnson win over Hillary. I'd have cheered if Bernie beat her. I can stand Trump winning mostly because I know it don't matter who's in that office at this point. Besides, we've been hearing about rigged polls conducted by supposedly reputable firms every election cycle. Presumably, rigged polls can be used as a tool to suppress votes or create a bandwagon effect or shore up a failing candidate or weaken the credibility of another, but I imagine the overall effect of poll tampering isnegligible. I don't know for sure.

One truth does emerge with polling controversies, though: the side that whines about it most is the losing side, always.

337 I try not to get sucked into arguing politics on Facebook, but I just replied to a (lefty, but intelligent open to good-faith debate) friend's post that linked an article with a list of Trump scandals complained that all we're talking about with Hillary are the email server and the Clinton Foundation.

I put up a long list of scandals she was involved in, with brief summaries of the details - WH travel office, FBI files, Chinagate, pardons, "lost" records, Commerce junkets, Lincoln Bedroom renting, destroyed female WJC accusers, prosecution of Billy Dale, jailing of the Youtube video maker to continue selling her Benghazi lie, etc. - and of the various sham investigations; lack of oversight; layers of fall guys / flunkies / buffers; and misuse of government office to consolidate power, destroy her enemies, and shield her from oversight.

I then pointed out that I don't like or trust Trump, but that since half his own party hates his guts, he's more likely to be kept in check than she is, whereas she'll weaponize the entire federal bureaucracy and the courts Congress will just let it slide. My conclusion: I hate that Trump is the only thing standing between Hillary and the presidency, but at this point he's all we've got.

One reply so far, from a Bernie supporter -- "You may have just convinced me to vote for Trump."

353 @94

You're right, he's losing on that map. Silver uses, I believe, a bunch of computer simulations to run thousands of possible outcomes based on current polling ranges (and in some models, background conditions like economy etc.) If Trump is losing on the map but winning a majority of the computer simulations, that means that he is very close behind in several states and is therefore upsetting HRC in at least one state that ends up being the tipping point in a majority of simulated election results.

If you look at 538's full projection, most of Trump's leaner states have him with a higher % to win them than HRC has to win *her* leaner states right now. That simply tracked with the national polls, one month ago the situation was reversed and hers were all safe while Trump had a 30% chance of losing Georgia.

Brandon, one of the AoS co-bloggers, is now in the polling business--and doing very successfully, by all accounts. Do you think his political beliefs cloud his methodology? Keeping in mind, of course, that if he found out unfairly weighting his polls even once then his credibility is gone forever, along with a good chunk of his livelihood. Integrity is everything in that business. One could argue that it's the only thing.

I agree. The big flaw with all the stuff they throw at Trump is that exact problem. If you build him up to be a monster and he comes across as likable and presidential, it all works in reverse. People respond to impressions and visuals more than anything else these days at least (maybe always) and all the whining yelling and articles on facebook in the world won't reverse that impression.

All Trump has to do is not go whackadoo or seem to threaten Hillary in any way. He has no problem with that, as long as he's on the winning side.

Hillary has to come across as reasonable, normal, healthy, and charismatic. She has to seem likable and sane. That's a pretty high bar for her.

Weak tea? How? Again: a polling firm's ability to remain a polling firm depends upon (1) their predictive success; (2) their reputation for providing unsullied results. Marketing firms, for example, can't work with deliberately skewed data. Neither can political campaigns or whoever else is paying the bills.

Thus,my argument that Silver wouldn't run a rigged poll because he might be found out and lose his multimillion dollarpolling business seems pretty strong to me.

Sadly, but understandably, those wouldn't make it past security. But'cha know what would?

Your cel fone, with an app programmed to fire the flash in a strobe pattern.

And I'm sure some enterprising 'Ron or 'Ette would know where to go in the medical literature to get the oscilloscope-type strobe pattern best suited to induce seizure in those so afflicted?

435 What are the odds of a full throated cough attack?

This will be my hope for 90 minutes. First, a tickle. Slugs down some water with thickener. People cough in audience. Beast of Benghazi's thought cloud:

"People are coughing in audience. My throat tickles. uh-oh. Think about something else! Huma. Grandchildren. There it is again! ugh. Oh, wait, what was the question? What is Trump saying. Tickle.Tickle. TICKLE. Gently clear your throat Hillary. Uh-oh. Here it comes!" COUGH/COUGH/COUGH/HACK/GURGLE/HARF

She then opens one of her trusty cough losenges while hacking into fist (Mr. Trump notes her left fist, whew, he won't shake THAT hand after debate) while holding up one index finger to stupid moderator. So moderator give Mr. Trump extra question.

In background of Mr. Trump's answer, Hilz will be wheezing and spewing and, yes, still coughing. Possibly aspirating cough drop. But no breaks. Minutes later there is a blissful pause in the horking and snorking. So moderator asks Harridan of Hell an easy question. She attempts to take a wheezy breath to answer. Squeeky strained voice rasps out a few words and she then goes into another coughing fit, nastier than prior as you can hear mucous rattling in upper bronchi between wheezing (she may try to spew into glass at this point, grossing out millions).

The debate will continue this way until she either falls off elevated podium due to a seizure of some type or a true done fall out medical emergency (keep in mind that these coughing and hacking jags of her's raise blood pressure, which is not good for the ole clot in her head sinus thingamabob).

There is no way I am missing this. If she coughs and rolls her wonky eye and even falls off podium the MSM will declare her the victor...even if she does not answer one single question.

450 404 My best case scenario for the debates is Donald Trump says really crazy stuff, scares the crap out of Hillary by walking toward her, and she goes into a 2-minute coughing and barking jag, followed by another full body collapse.

Now that's entertainment.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

My best-case scenario is similar, but more extreme:

Trump does everything "wrong": He physically menaces Hillary, he acts rude to her, he spouts factual errors, he uses violent metaphors, he employs sarcasm that can be willfully misinterpreted as literal, he casually sneaks promotional advertising statements about his resorts and branded products, he uses hand-gestures like Mussolini, he has nothing coherent to say about various foreign policy questions, he contradicts himself, etc. etc., while Hillary goes gaffe-free the entire night -- and even after all that, TRUMP STILL GETS A POST_DEBATE BOOST IN THE POLLS.

Oh, that would be sweet.

Ace reviewed the book. Since I'm interested in education, I took away different lessons from it.

Basically, the premise of the book is that we are now in a technological age where those people who can use the hardcore technological tools to create value, create new tools (languages, programs) or have the capital to invest in technology are going to do very well.
Unfortunately, this is happening at the same time as all of today's networking applications has steadily eroded people's ability to concentrate and do the deep concentrating ("Deep Work") necessary to succeed.

He's not in the "polling" business. He writes about polls, especially his sad Pennsylvania obsession. The DD took a stab at predictions and modeling early on, but that didn't work out so good. Now it's trying to be an election nights results competitor to AP.

And he is quite libertarian, and one may see that influencing what he writes.

.The latest Wapo poll for PA had a D+12 sample and that one shows Trump up by 1. obama only got a D+7 in 2008 and hillary isn't going to come anywhere close to that.

Nate got famous for predictions because he didn't just use the poll results. He went in and parsed the heck out of every poll's methodology used and balanced that mathematically with previous election turnouts and results.

In essence, he unskewed each and every poll and came up with the correct results more often than not.

The left loved him in 2008 and 2012. Not sure that is going to happen this time. He needs to watch his back.

I don't doubt that the Fed is going to raise interest rates. They have to at some point. You can't just keep printing money forever. But in the context of President Trump cutting regulations, killing Obamacare, ending waste on green energy/climate change, and increasing spending on military, homeland security (including the wall) and infrastructure (and he hasn't said anything about cutting anywhere), then it might actually be a wise move for the Fed to raise rates, because all those other things are likely to lead to blowout growth in demand and possibly, therefore, to inflation.

These idiots are using registered voters instead of likely, they have a plus or minus 3.5% margin of error, their weighting is based on 2008 and 2012 - meaning they give a 6 point bias to women voters and they believe 18 to 34 year olds will turn out in higher numbers than +65's.

Sure, the kids came out for the Obama election, but every indication on earth is that they don't give a shit about Hillary. Who would treat this poll like fact?

583 4. Hillary will pull off a really lame "zinger" and
the audience and pundits will go absolutely nuts with enthusiasm and
zeal. It will be dubbed the turning point of her campaign and the moment
she found her voice.

100% chance of this. They have probably had all the talent in Hollywood working on it for weeks.

586 If Trump wins the election, most of the neo-cons, pundit class, and Republican big money shift to the Democrats. Then it becomes a Dem civil war over how far left to steer the party.

For one, I think the Clintons are done. They will be unceremoniously
thrown out of the party. But I also think the party will go even harder
left because the drift of the Democrat Party toward open Communism is
downhill and gaining momentum.

-------------

On the one hand, this will be good for the Democrats, because it
will force them to find new talent (and I don't mean to imply that
Hillary is talent). On the other hand, its not that they will go
further left (I'm not even sure possible), but they will stay to the far
left they are - Hillary didn't even attempt to bring them back to
center.

More than a Hillary loss, what will really affect the Dem party is what Trump's first two years are like.

Posted by: SH at September 26, 2016 03:14 PM (gmeXX)

They have a lot more seats in the Senate to defend in the midterms than the GOP does. The real bloodletting will be after that happens.

Inevitably, they have to find someone with a more centrist voice in order to be credible, and they will. But it will be fun watching the Warren and Sanders show for the next 4 years.

Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at September 26, 2016 03:29 PM (DC/ZC)

589 Just bear in mind that even if Trump wins, he'll have to win by at least five percent to overcome Democratic fraud.

Posted by: Brown Line at September 26, 2016 03:29 PM (667Qv)

590 Even if he clinched it tonight with a flawless debate performance, never forget the Clinton's will do ANYTHING to win.

They will steal the election if it comes to that and they will do it shamelessly.

595 Hillarys zingers so far have consisted of: ..... the never truthful Hillary accusing Trump of lying....... and the woman who denied a private server.....scrubbed the private server....deleted her emails.....and had all her aides and associates plead the 5th in relation to the above accusing Trump of having something to hide......she's got a big mountain to climb to find a successful "zinger" ....my bet is Donalds zingers Trump her dead mans hand....

596 Do you know how I know Trump will win? Even my most ardent D social media friends are apologizing for Hillary and basically beggin for votes. It's hilarious. Never seen it before. Everyone else is quiet. The shy Tories are going to be a pretty large group this time. In growing more and more confident every day.

Remember, focus, debate morons. Mental strength for coughing. You will see her fighting the tickles. You will hear morons coughing in audience. Our mental thoughts will submerge into an implosion of coughing, hacking and spewing. Fifteen minutes in focus, hard. Then move on to head bobble and eye wonkies. xoxo

608 New to the horde so hope all of you will find me deplorable enough to join you. Anyway, here if my input for today. I drove around 10 miles around my area in NE suburb of Phila (Montgomery County). This was a route I frequently drove in 2008 and 2012 (retired now) and being a political junkie I would make a note of presidential signage. In 2008 I saw 20 Obama signs for every 6 for McCain. In 2012 there were about 16 Obama for every 8 Romney. Today, amazingly, I saw only 1 large Trump sign outside a car parts business and only 1 Hillary on a lawn. That is it- lack of enthusiasm or fear to put signs out. Thoughts?
