If we are going to indulge in such heretical speculation as the purported non-sphericality of cows, I wish to ask a question about a statement made by that bounder, Einstein. Ii is concerning the statement that if you were inside an accelerating rocket, with no external view or information, that it is impossible to distinguish between the force of acceleration and gravity, such as might be experienced if the rocket was standing on the surface of a planet. My question is why cannot the gradient of gravitational attraction folund near a planet (say) be used to distinguish between gravity and acceleration?
That is, would not a gravitometer in the top of the rocket compartment measure less force than one at the base, and would those devices not measure exactly the same force under a constant acceleration? Of course the gravity gradient would be very small and perhaps even impossible to measure, although I do recall reading of a measurement of a gradient using a tall building, so it is apparently measureable at some level. But the statement of principle attributed to Einstein (?) does not say "almost impossible" - it says impossible, period, I wonder if anyone here can help me understand the flaw in my thinking. Late 70's, I was at Laguna Seca and there was a vendor booth there from one of the first companies to make racing suits out of silicone-based nonslip textiles. And the guy doing demos was pretty used to hearing that leather was perfectly all right (at the time, he'd had heard that from me, too). His standard reply was, "Leather is great, as far as it goes. But how many cows do 170?"
And that's where bovine aerodynamics comes from. Posted by: Stringer Davis at September 25, 2016 12:22 PM (H5rtT) 33

My Amazon review on Hitlery/Cane's book since last one got 'poofed': 'The Plan' is nothing less than the death knell of the Republic, the elimination of the Constitution and Bill of Rights as we know it, and the imposition from the top down of Progressive Socialism as a tool for the Controllers, Masters, Owners and Elitists (along with their salad tossing stooges) to finally solidify control of the greatest force for good the world has ever produced. DO read the book. They lay it all out right there and aren't shy about it. Oh, you have to decode the ProgTard vocabulary, but they are laughingly rubbing your nose in their plans. They HATE the middle class, minorities, the military and small business owners. HATE THEM. Their plans are to deconstruct, marginalize and gain control over all these groups... and they say so right here... Aside from the content, the actual production and editing of the book is also miserable. You'd think for your election manifesto you'd pay for top class rewrite and editing... but no. It's like it was just a check box to do and screw, because they new most copies would end up in US Embassy waiting rooms in 5th world crap holes, USDA cafeterias propping up broken table legs and being used to start the diesel up in shite burn barrels... As with global warming, it helps to start with the desired result and work backwards
So ... fact ... the cow jumped over the moon ... cow jump deniers need not apply ... so how fast would the earth have to spin to propel a cow over the moon with centrifugal force. Assume the proper release mechanism would work without tearing the cow legs off, or the earth flying apart ... show all aeronautical and astronautical calculations. My old college roommate could probably do that math easily ... I have no clue. But a cow standing on earth is "accelerating" in a sense, since gravity is an acceleration. The cow is in fact experiencing the effect of gravity, at 32 fps^2. Bovine mass x gravity derives bovine weight. When it jumps over the moon, the effect of gravity decreases at a rate that is a function of the distance between the centers of the erf and the cow. Until the cow farts. Then Newton moves the cow a little faster. Unless the California giant butt cork is installed. Then pressurization simply develops potential energy. Milk production at a dairy farm was low, so the farmer wrote to the local university, asking for help from academia. A multidisciplinary team of professors was assembled, headed by a theoretical physicist, and two weeks of intensive on-site investigation took place. The scholars then returned to the university, notebooks crammed with data, where the task of writing the report was left to the team leader. Shortly thereafter the physicist returned to the farm, saying to the farmer, "I have the solution, but it works only in the case of spherical cows in a vacuum". Trump can easily leave the low points of his primary campaign behind (they haven't probably hurt him with non-primary gen. election voters, thanks to "don't follow 'politics'"). People old/aware enough of Bill's disgraceful/reckless behavior know about it, those too young mostly don't and they won't become that interested now. Hillary is a target of immense vulnerability. Her unfitness for any office based on policy idiocy and failure, her criminal behavior, her sociopathic mendacity - these are the issues and Trump needs to pound them mercilessly. Hillary must be getting desperate with women voters. A Philly station just ran an ad where they have Trump saying mean and nasty things about women over a period of many years.

Jim, will sub-sonics cycle a semi-auto?
Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at September 25, 2016 01:22 PM (97XyN) There are really too many variables at play for anyone to answer that with any degree of certainty. Most all .22 semi-auto rifles & pistols are of the blowback action description, vs. "short recoil" (example, 1911 design), or "gas-actuated" (example, AR & AK rifles.) Here are the major variables at play: * Brand of ammo. * Bullet weight. * Gun's bolt mass. * Gun's recoil spring power. So really, it's a "try it and see" proposition. Note that from the above, if you want to go the trouble, you can likely buy a suitably fit, but weaker recoil spring from Wolff's Springs, but then you'd have to do a tear-down, re-assemble, every time you wanted to switch between regular .22 LR and the Sub-Sonic rounds. Thanks to the couple of morons who responded to my question. One moron said the flaw was that the rocket standing on Earth was NOT accelerating. Another said it WAS accelerating. In a way both are correct. The rocket (why do I keep typing cow?) is NOT accelerating in the conventional sense of moving faster and faster, but it IS accelerating according to Einstein's principle of the equivalence of gravity and accelarion - he says they are actually the same thing.
I am not doubting his principle, but I have reservations about the thought experiment he uses to illustrate it. By the way, doubting the validity of an Einstein thought experiment is sort of akin to doubting whether a Nolan Ryan fastball was really all that hard to hit. The man was all about thought experiments! In my question I set up an experiment completely inside the rocket with no way to reference the outside world, which I suggest COULD tell the difference between the rocket accelerating and the rocket sitting in a gravitational field on a planet's surface. That is the puzzle - Einstein says it can't be done; I propose an experiment that appears to be able to do it! The trick is to use the gravitational gradient, the lessening of gravitational force over distance that would make gravity slightly less strong at the nose of the rocket than at the tail. The forces produced by the rocket accelerating in free space would be exactly the same everywhere on the rocket, however, and that would tip off our astronaut the he was experiencing the force of acceleration rather than the force of gravity. Posted by: Sabrina Chase at September 25, 2016 01:31 PM (SuJIo) Sabrina. Iver-Johnson was a solidly made gun in it's day, but they were not as finely made or finished as those from Colt or S&W. That said, they work just fine, and are very dependable for most uses. The only drawback to their particular revolver is the chambering in .22 LR, which is a bit light for self-defense use. Not useless though, as the lowly .22 has killed more people in non-military use, than any other cartridge in history. It falls into the category of "any gun is better than no gun at all.". That's the .22, not the Iver-Johnson, by the way. I think the Iver is just fine for nightstand duty, by the way. Might be antiquated, but that antique will shoot just as well as a new one. If they can, an upgrade to a good but cheap Rossi in .38 Special would be advised. Pretty much the same to use, but far easier to reload. Most the Iver-Johnsons were either side-gate loaded (like a Colt Single Action Army *cowboy gun*), or worse, a pull-the-cylinder-pin-remove-the-cylinder-use-the-cylinder-pin-to-punch-out-the-empties, reload-the-chambers, put-cylinder-back-in-frame-then-re-seat-the-cylinder-pin, design. Others were break-open frames, which are actually a very fast reload, but that lifting up of the rear sight to open the frame can be tough for old hands and fingers. A modern, swing out revolver cylinder is the easiest to use, and there are a near-infinite variety of loadings in .38 Special, from very mild to very wild, and everything in between. Oh, and here's some history on Iver-Johnson revolvers for you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iver_Johnson Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at September 25, 2016 01:44 PM (v5iqM) Posted by: Max Power at September 25, 2016 01:44 PM (QCc6B) Posted by: Hillary! 2016 Barking For Us at September 25, 2016 01:46 PM (4HySM) 166

Here;s a theory on BLM. It's all Michael Bloomberg's fault.
Rudy used stop-and-frisk to get guns off the streets. Bad guys were often carrying guns because all the other bad guys had them. So a bad cycle got broken. Bloomberg can be a shithead wonk and under his reign forced the NYPD to increase stop-and-frisk six=fold (from just under 100,000 per year to over 600,000). Rightfully, a lot of minorities got tired of getting tossed. Especially if the cop found a dime bag of weed that got you sent to the Central Booking holding pen for 20 to 40 hours until you got processed. DiBlasio exploited this wedge issue over police encounters with minorities. That and the promise of universal pre-K is what got DiBlasio elected. BLM took this and went nationwide and focused on the meme of shootings, even though shootings have actually been going down. Another canard we're hearing is that stop-and-frisk is unconstitutional. There was a NYC case where an activist lower court judge so ruled, but she was actually personally reprimanded by the 2nd Circuit. Before the case could proceed, DiBlasio was elected and dropped NYC's appeal (the city was the defendant) so that's the only reason why the ruling stands. Former Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson wrote a couple of books and in both he mentioned how the vast majority of shooting incidents he investigated involved a .22 of some kind. To all you jokers denying me my matriarchal rights
to a gun thread: no, that doesn't answer my question ;-) I need info on the Iver Johnson Target 22 caliber revolver, a make I have never heard of before. A "seasoned" relative has one and we are trying to determine if her age and arthritis require a different gun for home defense. Posted by: Sabrina Chase at September 25, 2016 01:31 PM I could Nitty McNitface a couple of very minor points in the responses you've received so far, but nit discussion would turn this into the very definition of a gun thread, and, as this has been verboten, I will not so. Can you get her to a range to try it out? Can she manipulate it double-action? Single action? Revolvers are good manual-of-arms- and malfunction-wise. Perhaps not so good if you can't fire double action. Without going single-action (cocking the hammer, then pulling the trigger), a semi-automatic would almost certainly have a lighter trigger, and likely more shots. Manipulating the slide can be an issue for arthritics, and the manual-of-arms perhaps challenging based upon the age. Bottom line, if she can shoot it reasonably well, it's acceptable. If not, there are other options that could be discussed. Posted by: Duncanthrax at September 25, 2016 02:02 PM (OF/aZ) 203

Tilikum. Egads, 452 Lux, actually.... goes to show what happens when I've just installed a new scope on my friend's 527 in the commie caliber.
Fixed 2.5x Leupold Gold Ring, vintage 1980's. He got it New In Box (old stock) at the HGCA gun show yesterday. Perfect scope for that rifle, too. I did a "manual" boresight of it, so it should be on-paper when he goes to shoot it, which won't be today. What's a "manual" boresight, you ask? Clamp rifle in padded rifle vice. (Tipton makes good ones), pull the bolt, and use a distant object as the erstwhile "target". Center that image in both the far end of the bore at the muzzle, and also change your focus to the near end, at the chamber. Make sure that "target" is equally centered at both points of focus. Then, making sure as to not cause the slightest wobble to the clamped rifle, first use the "windage" adjustment built into the rear set of scope base mounts, and bring the vertical reticle into alignment with that distant "target". Next, use the scope's turret adjustment, and bring the horizontal reticle into alignment with the same "target". Done with enough care and precision, this works at least was well as most optical boresights, and without the cash outlay for the device. The point isn't that you can easily fool someone inside a closed elevator or windowless rocket; the point is that gravity is the effect of the space curvature caused by mass. Sometimes I think conservatives pull out of arenas that are being infested with progressives. We hand them the ground, and then bemoan the fact that they have the ground. For example, for years Hollywood has been heavily influence by lefties. So conservatives abandon that arena and lefties have free rein. There is a conservative group - I can't remember their name - that is advertising for conservative actors, writers, producers, etc - all in attempt to gain a presence in an arena that many conservatives have abandoned, or denied. #204, 234 re the argument that gravity and acceleration are indistinguishable at a single point is true. So thanks, and I believe your insight is the answer to my puzzle.
Now as to whether the big E constructed a valid thought experiment... such a "single point" would in fact have to be an idealized point with 0 radius, which could not really exist. The fact that any REAL gravitational field HAS a gradient, while a REAL force caused by acceleration does NOT still seems rather fundamental. And as I read him, Einstein makes no qualification about the equivalence only being true at a single idealized point. On the contrary, he seems to be at pains to describe an environment in which a real experiment could be performed by a human being, its only "unreal" feature being that it is closed off from all external information. Never had a pop-up before. We've had a travel trailer, slide in truck camper, and now a motor home. Our travel trailer was a Jayco. They make a good product for the price. I know someone who lived in a pop up for over a year...in Houston...with 3 kids...by choice, not because of money. They all came out alive and well. We also have some cousins of my husband that own a pop up and we've been meeting up with them for three years now every spring in the Poconos along with the feast of my husbands extended family, about 30-35 all together. They have all been doing it since my husband was a kid. Great memories are being made.
Anyways, a pop up is a great alternative to tent only camping. Most people I know with one usually don't actually use the bathrooms in them. They can be climate controlled and keep rain and bugs out. The kitchen will be tiny but you'll mostly be cooking out anyways. Biggest benefit is for a bit of privacy to change, etc. and sleeping. Anyhow, we love RVing. Red Sox pitching has just struck out their 21st batter, most ever in a nine inning game. Still tied 2-2 into the 10th.

We had a pop up to take the kids camping after they got tired of tenting. It was pretty big, slept 6, kitchen, gas stove, sink, a/c and heater, outside cooking area. Camped all over the US in that camper. Loved it.

Latest missive from my liberal friend, submitted without further comment, for your edification and amusement:
"Hillary Clinton For President" - Editorial - September 25, 2016 Amen! While it is no surprise that the Times is endorsing Hillary, the timing of your editorial could not be better. This election is not about right or left, or liberal or conservative. It is about good and evil. As Maggie Haberman and Alexander Burns point out on page 26 of today's edition ("A week of Whoppers"), almost every word from Trump's mouth is a lie. He is a cheat and a philanderer, a bigot and a racist, but this is also not about voting for Clinton because Trump is deplorable, which he is, but voting for a candidate with a lifetime of achievements. Hillary Clinton stands for the average American, for the middle class, for the working poor, for kids and healthcare, and for the rule of law. She has the best resume and is the most qualified candidate to seek the presidency in my lifetime, and she has been successful in every challenge she has taken on. The debate should actually be over, as there really is no debate. Hillary Clinton is the only Qualified candidate to lead the nation. Posted by: Slash_buzz at September 25, 2016 06:40 PM (Efl1C) 448
Memo to LSU and the Gators:
Relying on former Purdue QB's is not a recipe for success. P.S. - Even if LSU got that final play off in time, I believe the pass was made past the line of scrimmage. 446: He needed to go last year. He has refused to adapt his system to the QBs he recruits and he's lost several games because of beyond shitty clock managment. Better now than wait till November. Hopefully F. King Alexander keeps his Marxifornian nose out of it this time and Joe Alleva signs whatever contract the TAF hands him!
