Ted Cruz Endorses Donald Trump

It's not a huge thing, but I guess it's not nothing either.

This election is unlike any other in our nation’s history. Like many other voters, I have struggled to determine the right course of action in this general election.
In Cleveland, I urged voters, “please, don’t stay home in November. Stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket whom you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.”
After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.

I’ve made this decision for two reasons. First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. And I intend to keep my word.

Second, even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable -- that’s why I have always been #NeverHillary.

Six key policy differences inform my decision. First, and most important, the Supreme Court. For anyone concerned about the Bill of Rights -- free speech, religious liberty, the Second Amendment -- the Court hangs in the balance. I have spent my professional career fighting before the Court to defend the Constitution. We are only one justice away from losing our most basic rights, and the next president will appoint as many as four new justices.

The chief effect of this seems to be increasing the psychic strain of #NeverTrumpers, as they continue conflating the question of "Do you feel Hillary Clinton should be the next president?" with the question they much prefer answering, "Do you have Principles and which Personalities do you favor here?"

I'm really getting tired of this This Time It's Personal bullshit, but whatever, the perpetual personal aggrievement cohort is going to continue to be perpetually personally aggrieved. They'll just find new ways to imply "vote for Hillary Clinton" without quite having to say that directly.

Without a doubt, of the two choices, it's Donald Trump, and not Hillary Clinton, who has had the longest track record and greatest success at corrupting the government.

So, vote for her. Because that's the Principled thing to do, for some reason.

I feel like we need Tom Hanks to step out at some point and declare "There's no crying in baseball."

But I'm sure they'd just call Tom Hanks a Trumpkin Sellout.

BTW: Why is it that #NeverTrumpers question Cruz' motives, given they get so upset if we question theirs?

Can't it be the case that Cruz is being dead honest here: Yes, I have great problems with Trump, including the beastly way he treated my own wife and father, and yet, in the scheme of things that are actually truly important, I must support Trump over this serial law-breaking and government-corrupting grifter?

I'm sorry, is that too illogical, fantastical even, for the #NeverTrumpers?

11 All the points he made were great, and a no brainer if you put things in a bigger context and look past yourself and own ego.

If this was American Idol, I could understand voting against Trump.

All I hear for NeverTrump is meaningless slogans like "Trump is a Democrat too!" with no explanation from them what it would mean to give the nation over to Hillary instead.

You really have to ask yourself how much that "I told you so" moment is really worth over the next 4 years.

69 It is interesting that the Hillary candidacy even still a thing.

As a conservative I completely oppose what she will do as president - she will take the country 180 degrees from the direction it should go in - and any "conservative" that supports her is no conservative.

But even liberals should oppose her. Yes, they support her drive for ever increasing control over the population, but a larger government requires better, less corrupt politicians. If the progressive utopia is to work its going to require men and women of unreproachable integrity and yet the left offers up the most corrupt politician in American history/

70 I've been a huge Ted Cruz fan since before he won his Senate seat. I was heartbroken when he went down in the primaries and aghast at Trump. I still have a hard time taking Trump seriously and every time I read some bit of news that makes it sound like Hillary is flaming out, my chuckle of delight is followed by the cold splash of water that is the realization whatever hurts her benefits Trump.

Now, I know a lot of people here are down on National Review (and not without cause -- that Kevin Williamson article was one of the most tone-deaf things I've ever read from a conservative publication), but I was put in mind of a recent Jay Nordlinger article, where he implores Trump fans to consider the rumor that GHW Bush is voting for Hillary says something about where the Republican party has gone. Fair enough. I like Nordlinger, even if he's fey and twee ... actually, that's kind of why I like him. It can't be firebreathing all the time.

But now that Cruz has come out in support of Trump, isn't it time for Cruz supporters like me (and like Jay) to sit down and say, hey, maybe I can vote for this guy. Reluctantly, sure, but *how bad is Hillary* if Cruz, who has every reason to lambaste Trump, came out and publicly endorsed him?

Since I live in NYC, who I vote for is pretty much an academic matter anyway. But if Trump is what we've got, maybe it's best to just swallow my pride and pull the lever.

Besides...much as I might not care for the man personally, or believe he's going to enact conservative policy, watching the heads explode after the election will be *delicious.*

105 Good move by Cruz, and it restores my respect for him. He put aside personal anger (some real) and pride for the good of the republic. I don't care if he is partially motivated for political gain either, it still results in something that is positive for the republic.

It also does something which Ace gets at: It removes the blanket that NeverTrumpers have been hiding behind for protection. Many people have pointed out the Never Trump movement is led by people who hate Cruz and his supporters. That they only used him as cover and foil so they could say how "conservative" and "principled" they are.

Now that protective shield is gone...and exposed for what they are.

OK, the core difference is this: I do not believe Clinton (or Trump) will end the Republic. We will get the same apocalyptic rhetoric in 2020 and 2024, just as we got it in 2012 and 2008.

If you believe Clinton will end America, you have to vote Trump. period.

Otherwise, you can take a wider view. I believe that Trump will make the party Trumpian - that is, a big-government, European style party that disagrees with liberals mostly over who should get handouts. This will not be a momentary change - it will be a realignment that will last a decade, probably longer. During that time, no party organization will even pay lip service to Constitutional Conservatism.

Trump has many liberal tendencies. Most folks here admit that. If Trump and Clinton both present the same big-government liberal bill to the same Congress, Trump will get more support (yes, some weaselly GOPers will back Clinton's bill. More will back Trump's.)

Clinton is a lying, power-mad felon who seeks to accumulate wealth by any means. I will not vote for her. But I cannot honestly say, taking a perspective 12 years or so down the road, which candidate will be worse for the nation.

When Cuban attends the Mavs away playoff games, he stands there behind the bench with his bodyguard and trades "fuck yous" with the home team's fans. He really likes to mix it up, and like Trump, he loves any kind of attention, good or bad.

I can easily see him trying to mess with Trump at the debate, and Trump not minding it.

No. I don't "know that." It's a reasonable argument. However, you acknowledge that the political landscape will shift.

I think we are already seeing the result of that. Republicans are clapping for people announcing that the culture war is over and that bathrooms don't matter. They're applauding paid child leave. Any move to restrict abortion is pretty much off the table for the next 4 years, no matter who wins.

Trump probably doesn't care enough to take over the party machinery. But other candidates will follow in his wake, take up his "nationalist populism," and entrench the reshaping of the party. Trump will do what he loves, going on TV, holding rallies and pushing his agenda, both during and after his presidency, which will keep Trumpism dominant.

I think Nevertrump is a symptom and not the syndrome, and I think it is caused by two different elements.

One is the very liberal, I suppose, or very reactionary element that like the way things are and see Trump as the spark that will make the whole game go bad - and possibly bring about what they think they are holding back. This could be personal failure, loss of power, economic crash, increased chemtrails, war with Albania, or whatever

The other is very conservative and moralistic, and I have sympathy for them, in that they consider Trump to be no different in outcome from Hillary, just different in volume and velocity. A number of high profile ones have stated that they see Trump as a new Teddy Roosevelt to bring on more levels of statism or finding a new path to making America great that looks like the Italian corporate state under Fascism, and in "willingness to be a bastard and target individuals" just a repeat of the lawfare state under our current administration.

The first group can either DIAF or Canute-like be drowned under the tide they imagine they are holding back.

The second group is very valuable. No-one likes taking hits and pressure, and they are the ones that stick by their guns and gut it out from personal convictions. And they taking from both sides now.
They are also the ones that are willing to fight for their principles, and you can either have them squaring off against you, forever, or have them on your side fighting with you if you can find a reconciliation.
I would argue that their professed principles of smaller government and freedom are the most important goals around, by the way.

All those other people who vote the Republican down ballot but leave the President spot blank because they refuse to vote for any of the candidates are a vote for the Hilldog.

Ergo, any blank vote for President is a vote for the H.

And 40% to 50% of eligible voters don't vote at all.

Thus, the tripping Hag only needs maybe 10% actual votes to be the winner, and she's surely bought that many.

Look, the SC argument is the best available for Trump. The problem is, Trump will never appoint justices who will limit government power in general or executive power in particular. If there is one thing we know of Trump, it is that he doesn't handle challenges to his authority well.

Plus, given the way the WH changes hands, he will be the most conservative person appointing justices for 12 to 16 years. The SC will always be an issue.

307 I stood in line to vote for Bush -1 first term and second term which he lost. As far as I am concerned I wasted both votes. I stood in line and wasted a vote on lackluster Bob Dole who lost to Clinton Crook 1 as we saw the MFM darling who got credit for "ending welfare as we know it" after he vetoed it twice. I stood in line twice and voted for Bush 2 twice even though I did not like him and considered him to be a RINO loser He allowed the Democrats to walk all over him while listening to Rove who was a major asshole. He joined forces with Ted The Swimmer for his first major act of socialism. Yes, I wasted those votes too because he too was the lesser of two evils. Then. . .

I stood in line IN THE RAIN and voted for for the here-to-now worst candidate and biggest RINO in modern history; McShitty. A totally wasted vote. In 2012 I stood in line and wasted another vote for a NE liberal RINO who was the embodiment of the RNCe. There was no stopping the FSA.

Now I have a choice to stand in line to vote for Trump who has no principles other than crony corruption and being the lesser of two evils. In his life time of cronyism he has switched parties 5 times. The ONLY reason for a conservative to vote for him is to oppose the wicked witch of Arkansas. After RINO Romney I swore that I would never stand in line to vote for the lesser of two evils again. And I won't. Here in SC my vote will not matter anyway. Trump will win walking away.

I will not stand in line again to vote FOR evil; lesser or not.

Hillary has said, in her own words, that if Congress doesn't give Hillary comprehensive immigration reform (i.e. "amnesty") she'll do it by executive order and then get it upheld with a new SCOTUS appointment. Holy separation of powers Batman!

This won't be the only trick she'll pull.

If Hillary wins, the growth of the Borg continues apace -- an unholy alliance of BigGov, MSM and Academia, which is melding. Some members of BigBiz are already a part of the this, and are increasingly aligning with the Cultural Left.

There comes a point where this is irreversible.

Hillary Clinton would get away with everything. Could you imagine a Senate without a two thirds Republican majority voting to remove and a media calling for her removal

Regardless of his positions and policies Trump will be limited and held accountible by his opposition and by his own side.

This is actually an argument for never voting for a democrat ever. But the democrats made this bed back in the Bill Clinton era and pretty much solidified it during Obama{s maladministration, so this is an arguement established by precedence.

I really would have hated voting for Kasich, but he would be more acceptible in this construct than any democrat.

As for Beck, he lost me years ago when he pulled a Couric on his radio show. Held an interview one day, then the next, decided to play back the interview with his comments. Except he cut and spliced parts of it together (the guests answer to question B was spliced in as the answer to question A, etc) so it fit his narrative and he proceeded to mislead listeners for days based on his edited clips.

324 70 - Sausage McMuffin at September 23, 2016 05:56 PM (T9DQN) has it exactly right. I follow National Review, Nordlinger, Williamson, Goldberg, et. al regularly, and believe that all are fine writers, but I can't understand NeverTrump at this stage of the game. It's fine in the primaries to be "Against Trump," but even William F. Buckley stated that you must elect the "most conservative" candidate when it comes down to the general election. Obviously DJT is not a conservative as defined in the past, but compared to HRC, Trump is to the right of every Democratic candidate that was in the race (except perhaps Jim Webb, the former Virginia senator, who would never be accepted by the Democratic base, but for whom I would have voted in a heartbeat if he were the candidate against DJT). However that is not the choice this year. It's OK to ask why GHWB would vote for Clinton, but I don't think you can ask "what has happened to Republicans that would drive a Bush to vote for a Democrat." The Republican primaries made that decision, for better or worse, so the decision now is only to vote for the known corrupt, evil, unprincipled candidate the Democrats nominated, or the unknown, inexperienced, unConservative buffoon that the Republicans nominated. To me, that is an easy choice: I can live with myself for choosing the "most conservative candidate" available in this election, even if that is not the first or best candidate whom I would have chosen. I voted for Ted in Texas, but I have to vote for Trump in the general.

332 Ace seems to assume that IF Hillary is elected the country will fall apart. The doom and gloom prophecy. Alas, we survived the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Cold War, and are still alive even with the Islamic barbarians at the gate. IF Hillary wins, even 'she' does not have the power to destroy us. Those who assume she does give her WAY too much undeserved credit. She's just another HACK. If she can destroy the country, then we were already doomed. Get on with it. Alas, some of us ARE principled and won't surrender. We might go down, but we'll do so with integrity.

What is happening is the death of conservatism. Accelerated by Trump, and supported by Cruz. GOP has moved to squishy middle, and is even leaning left with many policies promoted by Captain Cheetos. You're going to lose in an electoral landslide, accept the pain. You will, however, lose your integrity, backing a clown thinking all there was between you and the apocalypse was Bozo.

As a wise man said 'not voting for Hillary is the same as electing Trump.' I guess, without voting for him, I am doing the same thing you Trumpers are. Voting (or not) for a candidate that will get 150+ electoral votes, start a new TV channel, and laugh his way to the bank. Good job.

Let's say Trump gets elected. I think he will.

What will it take for Trump supporters to say "I've made a huge mistake?"

Will you say it if he pushes single payer? If he nominates a liberal or even a squishy supreme court judge?

Or can every sin be explained by "Clinton would have been worse?"

And if every sin can be thus absolved, is it realistic to keep arguing that the GOP, be it Congress or voters, will reign in his excesses?

Posted by: person(a non grata) at September 23, 2016 06:42 PM (mFkVC)

++++

He will very likely do some things I will disagree with. But, it is very unlikely that he will turn out to be the guy that the #nevertrumpers portray him as: the evil spawn of Obama and reanimated Hitler.

If he starts out by doing the things he has promised the most loudly: the wall and restricting Muslim immigration, I will view my vote as well spent.

It's not the absence of pretty compliments that people are complaining about, it's the anti-logic of demanding rigid loyalty with a tone of hateful aggression while acting like it's ridiculous to not think being a wholly loyal adherent to a movement that hates you with such ferocity is in your best interest. Trump supporters want something from us (loyalty to a GOP we're not feeling loyal towards), and talk like they can demand it. We'll shut the fuck up with our demands once you do. We didn't need you to validate our specialness, we needed you to demonstrate your worth as moral actors to us, that you didn't have the same avarice for political self-imposition as the social justice warriors, and well, you certainly showed us. If you don't want us in your coalition, I'm more than happy to oblige, now and in 2020 when you have to run against a candidate who isn't dying before our eyes and drowning in scandals.
I've come to believe that the GOP rank and file is composed of people who either want authoritarianism, because they've embraced the idea that that's how you beat Democrats, or who are too afraid to challenge that because they can't stand to not have the home team out of power. Neither faction can offer me a worthwhile incentive to align with them. If we're just arguing between two aspirationally authoritarian parties, it's of no use to insist to me "vote for Trump, because he'll suck more at being authoritarian." You can swap out Trump for Cruz as the candidate today, and it won't budge me any, I'm done with this party.

It's not about blaming people. It's about the fact that I don't think a lot of "Conservatives" are going to be willing to oppose Trump very vigorously. They'll spin, they'll excuse, they'll redefine "Conservatism" to mean "whatever Trump says" - we're already seeing a lot of that.

This country means a great deal to me. It needs a Conservative party. At the moment, the GOPe is spineless and largely nominally Conservative with a few members who actually push Constitutional principles. I think the party under Trump would be even worse (yes, that's possible) and Conservatism would be entirely voiceless, cast into the wilderness. And that isn't good for the country.

The answer is simple.

Hillary has a lifetime and career of horrendous and even illegal activity with a body count. Even if, policy wise, her and Trump were identical she still should lose, so she doesn't benefit from and succeed upon this pile of bones, greed, and injustice.

This is not complicated. Its obvious.

What's remarkable is how undisciplined and reckless they've both been at doing this. Bill never thought Monica would keep a cum-stained dress. Hillary never thought her secret server would be exposed. There's a lot more that may not have come to light.

What do you think happens if Hillary wins the White House so that there's no longer any restraint on her and Bill's appetites?

Yes, McConnell has. And some of the #NeverTrumpers you won't acknowledge, guys like Shapiro, do complain about it at great length. Frankly, a lot of the folks at NR do too.

But they'll cave even quicker when Trump pushes through his big-government programs. And the pressure to conform placed on reluctant Conservatives will be even greater. And the "Conservative" media will push Trumpian, not Conservative, ideals.

So I'm running around like on fire and screaming and my skin's melting and my supposed friend is running around with his dick out trying to piss on me? Or like a female friend is trying to do somersaults or something? Wouldn't I be like, hey stop pissing on me and I don't know maybe get a fire extinguisher or a blanket or something? My ultra-conservative mother, who detests Hillary, is a #NeverTrumper because of this. (She lost both a father and a brother and many relatives/friends.)

He's also said things that sound like more conventional Conservative attitudes towards healthcare.

Modern Conservatism is basically classical Liberalism, the thinking enshrined in the Constitution. It's the celebration of individual, God-given rights. It's the elevation of law over men.

It's the knowledge that man is fatally flawed, and no one individual or faction must have a preponderance of power. Thus, it is a fear of overweening government.

It's an aversion to dramatic, emotionally-driven changes.

It's a lot more than that, but I've always felt that to be the core.

Yes, appoint "Constitutional Conservatives" as judges. Trump has given a list.

Beyond that, what?

e.g., The Government shouldn't have gotten into healthcare the way it did, but it did. Now what?

You want to blow up a few federal agencies, fine. But you need to be in power to make a start.

There's an interesting recent article in The New Yorker about what to expect in the first 100 days of a Trump Administration. In addition to a wholesale dismantling of Obama's legacy, there are attributed quotes about how New Gingrich is coaching Trump about going after the federal civil service with hammer and tong. 507 "What I don't do is create a fantasy-Trump who will fulfill all my wishes."

There's a lot that Trump can do without the co-operation of Congress. Obama has shown that.

But he may find that McConnell and Ryan are obstacles, especially over budget reform and SCOTUS nominees.

Obama has packed the lower and intermediate courts with no GOP resistance. This could frustrate Trump as well.

I'm more worried about these things than Trump giving full rein to his "authoritarian impulses."

Posted by: Ignoramus at September 23, 2016 07:31 PM (r1fLd)

508 Either you thought Trump was an existential threat to the Republic or you didn't.

Either you thought Trump could be trusted with nuclear weapons or you didn't.

If you didnt, the answer was obvious from the beginning: Support Trump.

Where I have lost a lot of respect for a whole lot of people (and, fortunately, from some expected no differently) are those who made it clear they thought those things and turned around and endorsed him.

If you honestly thought those things, then, yeah, as big of a corrupt harpy as Hillary is and as liberal as she is (and she might turn the Supreme Court liberal for a generation), you should still have difficulty supporting a guy you thought was an existential threat to the Republic who might start a nuclear war.

At the heart of the divide and animosity between Trump supporters and NeverTrumpers is the failure to actually hash this out--to just announce that you're supporting him and not get into the nitty gritty of whether they still think he's a threat to the Republic who might start a nuclear war.

Now, if you never thought these things, all that is meaningless. More power to you.

Cruz made it clear at one point he thought these things. He's now endorsed Trump. Fortunately, even when I defended the guy, I believed everything his critics said about him.

I expected no better of him.

509 I stand with Christopher Taylor in his comment @410. Unlike the Coughing Crone with Hairy Lip Mole, I can stand unassisted and don't bobble-head next to Christopher.

I hope Hilz The Haggard Harridan has a coughing fit and falls off her special podium at the debate. I hope there is a constant replay in her wee atrophied brain of "throat tickle" playing over and over like an air horn and keeping her from sleep.

I hope she feels every eye looking at her for her wonky eyes, her coughing, her bobbles and nods. I hope the Haiti voodoo is strong this night, for the billions she made off their backs.

She deserves every single thing thrown at her due to her evil life of lying. I have not a pity, a shred of human sympathy, to the Beast of Benghazi, who would do anything to cross that finish line on November 8th.

Oh, no, my flying monkeys....I want her alive for the day she is defeated from her life's goal, after her human sacrifices on the Arkanicide list, the 12 yr old rape victim Christopher mentions, the women she lied about when Bill was a-dickin.' The Clinton Cash and pay to play as she sold our country out to our enemies.

I'll give you a reset button, Hilz, right to the old loony bin where you belong, you screeching harpy. (I say, old friends, does not the latest video of her shrill voice yelling at the Internet sort of explain why Bill strayed? How would you like that screeching banshee day in and day out?). I digress, but that was certainly a sign of her going around the bend for another lap.

I am not sure if special stepped podium (who is going to help her up and down? Will there be rails? Will platform, to increase her height, rise up out of the floor?). Is it retro fitted with robotic leg braces, an invisible stool, a defibrillator, and vaporized levadopa and diazepam, specialized ear-bud technology, as well as a vacuum apparatus to flush out the Depends as no bathroom breaks? Or does she have an IV port hidden among the tunic, titrating her meds by someone off stage monitoring her?

This is way more interesting than wondering if someone has crib notes or ear buds (and you know she will have an ear bud or maybe wear her cross-eye glasses for help via Google). This old sick mare has to stand and talk for 90 minutes, while hoping her eyes don't go wonky and coughing spell knocks her off podium (which the campaign may find is a bad idea after she falls off into Mr. Trump's arms like Jane falling from a tree into Tarzan's).

Her stress must be in the stratosphere for Monday. Hopefully Bill will stay in his safe room at their compound, as throwing stuff is probably going on along with tantrums of epic proportions with her writing in feces on the walls.

I mean, it is a clear choice, Morons. Vote drunk if you have to, but vote against this evil woman and her cabal of corruption with too many crimes to list.

513 11 All the points he made were great, and a no brainer if you put things in a bigger context and look past yourself and own ego.

Clear, concise, logical endorsement. And Kasich goes to the White House to sign on to Obama's effort to force the shit sandwich TPP through during the lame duck session. I didn't know Kasich was the biggest asshole among the candidates, but it's pretty obvious now.

Posted by: Deplorable Male Logic at September 23, 2016 07:27 PM (lKyWE)"

He praised the North Korean dictator. He praised the Tienanmen Square massacre. When Trump reneged on his pledge he warned of riots if he's not nominated. His convention speech was exclusively more powers and programs for a Trump government. Trump has repeatedly called for laws that would make it more difficult to criticize Trump.

Trump fans roll their eyes at the truth here because they think Hillary is somehow worse. But Trump is one of Hillary's best supporters, so I never got that one. If Hillary is so bad, Trump gets credit for supporting someone who is so bad.

There is no good option, but picking the lesser of two evils every year is why this country is being ruined, and we need to stop. If that means Trump loses, this probably means fewer human rights abuses anyway.

516 All the women supporting Trump in the audience need to wear tons and tons of gaudy necklaces, earrings and other jewelry.

Rhinestones, diamonds if they have 'em.

Every kind of highly reflective, sparkly, multi-faceted bling and sparkle that they can wear.

Sequined blouses, spangly brooches.

All The Sparkly Things.

Even though the audience is largely out of view from the stage, due to lighting, there still is light in the seats...and with enough bling in the crowd, it'd be like strobes going off in the eyes of the candidates.

And you know what that means.

520 What I don't get about the NeverTrumpers is: jeez, you really think true conservativism has a chance to come back after 4 or 8 years of Hill?

Look around you RIGHT NOW. Instapundit is in trouble right now with his employer because of a tweet he apologized for (and he shouldn't have). That apology got him nothing. They've kicked Milo and Vox Day and Scott Adams off of Twitter. A sportswriter wants that Mariner who tweeted out comments critical of BLM to lose his job. Kimmel is being hounded just for treating Trump like a human being.

You're afraid of authoritarianism? What do you call what is going on right now? Do you think that's just an election time ploy and will stop if Hill's elected? I am really, really afraid of the attacks on the 1st Amendment right now and the fact the Left is trying to force us to all think in lockstep, with real life consequences for those who dare question them.

The msm and their tech allies are at our throats like a rabid wolf and you'll telling us to just play dead and do nothing and at some point help will come - help you like, not the vulgarian with the orange hair but gentlemanly, principled help. Except by that time, we'll have been torn apart by the entire wolf pack.

528 There is nothing illogical or fanatical in my refusal to vote for a lying, morally degenerate liberal con man temporarily flying a false flag of conservative Republicanism. And I think a lot less of Cruz for capitulating.

I have nothing but contempt for those who insist that others put their qualms aside and join then in voting for for what they know to be a steaming lump of dog turds with a record of betraying any and all promises when keeping them is no longer in his short tern interests. At last I will be in a better position to shout NO when Trump once again betrays those who believed what he said.

Every single Trump vs. NeverTrump argument / conversation / offhand remark has been this on the one hand and people saying "Trump sucks" on the other. Everybody knows this. Everyone has always known this. It is an insult to anybody who actually follows politics to mention it.

Unless anybody is actually going to get into the meat of this...

Is Trump better than Hillary?
Does the laughing-at-getting-a-guy-off-for-rape-of-a-minor disaster that is Hillary Clinton outweigh Trump's risk?

536 I don't understand the hate for Cruz now. His endorsement was hardly a ringing endorsement, just an "I'm voting for Trump and urge you to do the same." And I got to the same place a few weeks ago.

Trump is awful. He's unprincipled and it's highly unlikely he'll keep his promises. But at least he's saying the right things and has an American-centric view, as opposed to Obama's and Hillary's world-centric view.

And even bigger for me is the behavior of the media. The way they have covered for Hillary and openly campaigned for her is just not something that the country can survive. The media must be smashed, and Trump is the only hammer we have.

I live in a very blue state, so my vote really does not matter, but at this point refusing to vote for Trump because of principles just feels like moral preening.

537 It's
sad. I can't see any upside whatsoever for the Cruz endorsement. It will

trousers and bend over for the likes of Boehner, McConnell, Ryan . . .
wow . . . to abase yourself for *the Republican Party*. That would be
like Ace dropping his trousers and bending over for Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow. I can't feature the degradation of violating
one's integrity . . . ****for the likes of the Republican Party****. I
mean -- I could see violating one's integrity for one's wife, or
children, or dear loved ones. But boy . . . talk about a plummet into

#NeverTrumpers, as they continue conflating the question of "Do you feel
Hillary Clinton should be the next president?" with the question they
much prefer answering, "Do you have Principles and which Personalities
do you favor here?"

Nope, no psychic strain at all. I don't vote for liberals especially if they are nominated by the Republican Party. The question is . . . what will give America what it *most needs* [other than full-throttle repentance and revival from the country, including me] which is an actual conservative opposition party. That is *the* most important thing for the coming decades, not defeating The Very Most Worstest Candidate Ever Our Country Is Ruined Forever, except for when Gore was running and he was The Very Most Worstest, and then Bill Clinton, and then Barack Obama -- *now* Hillary is The Very Most Worstest and America Is Ruined Forever -- the usual farcical rhetorical template the Republicans use every single four years to try to obscure their latest awful liberal candidate.

Electing Trump will move the country exponentially farther away from what American Most Needs -- an actual conservative opposition party.

So no -- no psychic strain, just very very different basic values from those who are voting for Trump.

539 It was best summed up by a caller on Levin's radio talk show. Her primary objection to Trump was that he had not apologized to Cruz...

Interesting. Well, there are lots of stupid things on Facebook (that's why I'm not). But the two modifiers were "real" and "still". The happiest people in America today are those who screamed never before the convention but who quietly threw in the towel months ago. I'll just be amazed if this has any effect at all on the polls.

Posted by: m-zero-x at September 24, 2016 07:04 AM (zWTYO)

544 Ted Cruz is a professional politician. People who want to make him out as anything else are setting themselves up for disappointment. Cruz still has a woman problem and needs the acquiescence of people who could make a stink about it to advance further. Think Chris Christie and so-called bridge-gate. In politics truth-rarely-matters.

546 RE: "Interesting. Well, there are lots of stupid things on Facebook (that's

Yep -- the people now declaring their undying loyalty to Cruz over on his FB page are people who were already gonna vote for Trump and demanded he surrender too. So they're happy now.

RE: "The
happiest people in America today are those who screamed never before the
convention but who quietly threw in the towel months ago."

Here's where we disagree -- I'm one of the happiest people alive. : > ) I will be sad for America when Hillary is sworn in, just as I will be sad for America if she dies right before the election and Trump wins. But . . . my life will be happy and filled with adventures no matter what, and I long ago recognized the rhetorical catastrophizing that Republicans use to whip up terror and anxiety with "The Very Most Worstest Candidate Ever Who Will Kill America Dead" was merely a game to obscure their horrible nominees.

RE: "I'll just be
amazed if this has any effect at all on the polls." Yeh -- people like me are obdurate and didn't base a thing on Cruz or anybody else. I think the main thing for Cruz is that when Trump loses he can say "hey, man, I endorsed the guy with more than a month left to go before the election -- nobody should blame me!"

He's lost a ton of credibility with his base -- people like me -- but I think even that's gonna be okay because I never made Cruz a god -- I don't count on him, or any other human around, other than the one who is divine anyway.

Posted by: Igor at September 24, 2016 09:40 AM (FfQXL)

Well my point is they are happy because now they can point to Cruz and Levin to rationalize their own capitulation.

But you're right, it's interesting to me that the terror and anxiety they're whipping up about Clinton is matching the same intensity as they whipped up about Obama. They'd say the same thing about any other democrat, even if Trump had won with the appropriate party id (D) next to his name. Fact is, Clinton is bad - really bad - but even if she wins I'll be relieved that Obama, the furthest left radical revolutionary ever to run for the office, is out of power. I'll be just as relieved, and for the same reason, if Trump wins.

Posted by: m-zero-x at September 24, 2016 11:13 AM (zWTYO)

548 Coming to this late...

Yeah Cruz is just another politician who cares about himself of principles. He pretended to care about principles when it benefited him, but when push came to shove he folded and started supported Clinton's Donor.

"BTW: Why is it that #NeverTrumpers question Cruz' motives, given they get so upset if we question theirs?"

Because you are wrong when you question our motives. We don't want Clinton president any more than you do. We just don't see a difference, and in fact it could be argued that electing Clinton would be better for the country (which is different than saying Clinton is better for the country). She'll have a compliant media, but even if Trump doesn't his whole shtick is pushing back against the media, so there is no difference there.

BUT Republicans won't give in to Clinton for the most part (as they have under Obama), but they will give into Trump wholesale. And he'll appoint "moderates" to SCOTUS, push for and get all sorts of big government things, and he'll push for and get a gang of 8 type immigration policy.

But opposing Trump doesn't mean we want Clinton. He means we don't won't either liberal Democrat for president. We will let other decided which of the two should be president- we refuse to participate.

I definitely believe that a Trump presidency will be far worse for the country long-term than a Hillary presidency.

But honestly -- we don't have to worry about that happening, unless Hillary keels over dead right before the election.
