Brave New World: Speech Police Force Glenn Reynolds Into Public Contrition

In the future, we'll all have to self-flagellate for the leftist powers that be for 15 minutes. Per day.

I was following the riots in Charlotte, against a background of reports of violence. Joe Bruno of WSOC9 interviewed a driver whose truck had been stopped by a mob. Trapped in her cab, she “feared for her life” as her cargo was looted. Then I retweeted a report of mobs “stopping traffic and surrounding vehicles” with the comment, “Run them down.”

Those words can easily be taken to advocate drivers going out of their way to run down protesters. I meant no such thing, and I'm sorry it seemed I did. What I meant is that drivers who feel their lives are in danger from a violent mob should not stop their vehicles. I remember Reginald Denny, a truck driver who was beaten nearly to death by a mob during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. My tweet should have said, “Keep driving,” or “Don’t stop.”

I don't believe for one second the words can "easily" be taken to mean that.

I think the Social Justice Warriors just want their weekly scalp -- and they lie to get it.

I think the left will increasingly demand that each of us will declare our devotion to their Strange New Gods for the simple privilege of being permitted any voice whatsoever in the world they own.

I don't blame Reynolds for this -- this is the going to be required of each of us in turn if we are to enjoy the privilege of simply existing.

After all -- Right now they're "Investigating" his tweets at the University of Tennessee where he's a professor.

With tenure.

But I'm sure they'll make up a special rule as to why they can fire some professors with tenure.

UT College of Law Dean Melanie D. Wilson said in a statement Thursday morning that she and university administrators are investigating the matter, calling Reynolds’ post an “irresponsible use of his platform.”

“The university is committed to academic freedom, freedom of speech, and diverse viewpoints, all of which are important for an institution of higher education and the free exchange of ideas,” she wrote. “My colleagues and I in the university’s leadership support peaceful disobedience and all forms of free speech, but we do not support violence or language that encourages violence.”

And this is why you're gonna get Trump.

People are sick of being bullied and hounded by idiot savages.

Remember -- they really do want to micromanage and punish every single thought you have and word you speak.

Oh, by the way:

33 I hate Twitter and it abolutely does have an agenda against conservatives.

Also, I agree with Glen Reynolds on his tweet.

That being said, I think a tweet like this is a pitch down the middle for disciplinary action.

I mean even this website will ban you if you look to be advocating violence, even if it's justified.

So I guess I'm not as up in arms over it. But I'm open to other views.

37 I do think anyone in a significant position such as professor does need to think twice about what they post on social media. You don't just represent yourself, you represent the place you work at if you're semi high profile like that.

I struggle with this because I want people to buy my books. I want them to buy regardless of their political leanings, not go "oh he's that conservative I'm not buying any of his crap!" because of some tweet I sent out. But at the same time, being who I am is part of having a writer platform and using social media. If I have no opinions and am bland and meaningless that turns off readers, too.

Its a real struggle.

Someone posted an example yesterday showing that twitter is now reviewing/censoring the links people insert into tweets. There was a tweet that linked to the Vox Day *blog*, and the tweet included a message that this link was shown to be unsecure (indicating that your computer was somehow at risk) and/or the site violated twitter's speech policy. 123 Well you all can howl all you want, but when Melissa Click made comments inciting violence, everyone here (rightly) was outraged and demanded that she be fired...which she was. On one level what Glenn said is different since he wasn't literally telling a specific person to do something, and it didn't involve a student. However, on another level it's worse. Telling people to "run down" pedestrians is telling them to engage in action that could lead to severe injury and/or death. That's serious and highly inflammatory, especially given how bad the situation is in NC right now. People should be urging calm, not saying crap like that. It was over the line and all of you know it. Yes leftist professors get away with much worse, but defending things out of spite and tribal loyalty is pathetic.

127 Not only to the Strange New Gods, but those Strange New Gods change at whim and with no warning.

Here's the thing, I am truly sick of people acting as if they are somehow morally superior for demanding that other people die for their beliefs.

Make no mistake about it, that is what this is. A demand that I die for, well, for what, exactly? The right to protest? But violently attacking a vehicle isn't a protest, it's an assault and an attempt at grievous bodily harm, or worse. So what is the principle being upheld here? That for a certain subset of people, they have the right to run rampage and I dare not attempt to defend myself? That's not a principle, that's straight out mob rule.

Hmm. Now that I think about it, I can see the correlation. The mob of wordsmiths, to use the term lightly, demands that it have absolute power with the victim, chosen more or less at random, being denied utterly the right to defense. That is the same "rights" being decreed to be given to the physical mob, the right to attack a victim, chosen more or less at random, with the victim being denied the right to defense. The only difference is that the harm in the first case is to reputation and the right to earn a living and the other is direct, immediate physical harm. In both cases, the mob demands that it can tear the flesh with the victim being the aggressor for daring to fight back.

Also, I do not for one moment believe that don't stop or keep driving would have resulted in any less outrage. Professor Reynolds dared to voice the notion that the individual has the right to self preservation and that concept must be destroyed.

I despair. I despair.

Hugely different circumstances, and I don't even see a parallel. Click was organizing thug violence against an inoffensive reporter bystander, while Reynolds was advising innocents caught in thug violence to defend themselves (lest they become injured or had their lives threatened).

Reynolds advising self-defense in a riot, Click advising thug violence and promoting a riot.

These cases could not be more different.

I don't know how you can praise the former homicide detective for going out into the crowd and talking calmly, trying to reason with people and clam them down, and yet at the same time defend "run them down". It was a dumb thing to say. Should he be fired? Of course not! But it did cross the line and he was right to acknowledge that and apologize.

260 "when Melissa Click made comments inciting violence, everyone here (rightly) was outraged and demanded that she be fired...which she was. On one level what Glenn said is different since he wasn't literally telling a specific person to do something, and it didn't involve a student.

There, see? You've answered your own question: It's not like Melissa Click. Also, Professor Reynolds made the comment on his own Twitter, on his own time, regarding events having nothing to do with the university where he teaches. So, yeah, totally different from directing your pet thugs to beat up a student journalist on campus for filming a fauxtest designed to bolster the teachers' union's demands.

"However, on another level it's worse. Telling people to 'run down' pedestrians is telling them to engage in action that could lead to severe injury and/or death. That's serious and highly inflammatory, especially given how bad the situation is in NC right now."

Melissa Click asking for "muscle" to beat up a student journalist is telling them to engage in action that could lead to severe injury and/or death and is also serious and highly inflammatory, especially given the context of that fauxtest.

"People should be urging calm, not saying crap like that. It was over the line and all of you know it."

Tell it to Reginald Denny. Tell it to the guys who were yanked out of their cars in Michigan after having the misfortune to be at the wrong intersection at the wrong time. Tell it to the shopkeepers in Baltimore and Ferguson who no longer have shops because they've been burnt down and looted. Tell it to the journalist these imported fauxtesters threatened set on fire or the people whose lives were threatened for being white. Tell it to the woman trucker who spurred Professor Reynolds to comment.

"Yes leftist professors get away with much worse, but defending things out of spite and tribal loyalty is pathetic."

The one honest point you make is that leftist professors regularly get away with much worse. So you're okay with the double-standard? Investigations for thee but not for me?

261 These aren't 'protestors', they're the same garden-variety criminals that turn their neighborhoods into shitholes and lead to police response that they claim to protest against. Letting them wrap up in the cause du jour is foolish.

They show up armed, organized, and in a mob. They come with guns, knives, bats, and bombs.

The few people with their candles and kids come out before dark and then disappear, leaving the streets to the thugs. Those people are just the cover, and I don't feel any need to pretend that the people committing the violence just became violent in sudden outrage-- they're the ones that are violent every day of the year and turn the whole place to shit to begin with.

CEO's are not allowed to lie about how their business operates. He says they do not discriminate against conservatives in how they ban and censor which is 100% false and any idiot who does a 5 min search can prove this.

The CEO of twitter lied about how his business operates which is of major material financial importance for the shareholders.

If you want to go after these companies, that is how you do it. You attack them for lying about how their PUBLIC company operates. Of course, we would need a real SEC and DOJ and we obviously don't have that.

Yes, I do so at a state university, and yes, I am aware of both constitutional and administrative protections for what I say.

That being said, Glenn did not say this in class, he did not use official Univ. of Tennessee connected email etc. to do this, and the matter being discussed is a matter of opinion and of current national interest. Because it is outside the framework of his job, IT IS PROTECTED SPEECH full stop under the law including administrative law (he has a property interest(tenure) as well as a liberty interest (freedom of speech)). Given Brandenburg, what he said could not be taken in any form or fashion as a "true threat" given it was done hours later after events, in the context of comment on HIS blog, and it was not in any form or shape involving the University of Tennessee.

And yes, I have taught Civil Liberties as a class and furthermore administrative law for a number of years FWIW.

We are creeping up on a dissolution of the republic and shredding our Constitution day by day.

321 I once ran over a "pedestrian" in a somewhat similar situation. Mrs. Wrecks and I were returning from a restaurant when we were stopped by a red light. A guy with a maniacal look in his eyes and a crazy smile on his face got directly in front of the 4Runner and began to pound on the hood. I decided I wasn't going to wait for him to a gun so I decided
To make a hard right turn and just drive past him. He clung to the car and was just about to the driver's door when he disappeared and I felt like I'd driven up on a curb. Mrs. Wrecks yelled, "You ran over him!" and jumped out. I had stopped with my right front tire directly on his leg. (I later saw tire tread marks on his thigh.) I backed off (it would have been bad form to continue over him) and he was howling like a banshee. I called the cops and an ambulance. When the ambulance approached, he got up and attempted to limp quickly away but the medics caught him. The cops came and had no trouble believing my father incredible story (this guy came out of nowhere and attacked my car for no reason). I got the impression they knew the guy and felt this was was consistent with his character. Despite some of my jokes to the contrary, I rarely drink and had had nothing alcoholic with dinner for which I was grateful.

And that's the story of how I ran over a pedestrian.

328 295, the count here in Chicago is horrific, and it breaks my heart, but I see now my tears are worthless.

The liberal democrats will continue to rule and keep the people on the south and west sides in poverty so they can pimp for votes.

There will be no economic opportunity in those areas and therefore the young men will choose gang life over job life (if there were jobs, democrats prevent wal mart from coming for example which actually would provide jobs for that community to start a base of economic activity.)

The family unit has been destroyed which everyone with a brain knows is a major stabilizing factor for a community.

Nobody will vote differently, so it is what it is. I have literally shed tears over this. I grew up in poor Chicago and it didn't have to be like this.

Kneel during the anthem all you want. That is virtue signaling bullshit, and will have no impact on the real issues.

Unless you rebuild the family unit, and overturn decades of liberal economic policies DESIGNED to keep these neighborhoods in poverty, there will be no end to these semi monthly riotous events.

Good point. Reminds me of a liberal I used to know who, has ended up as a prof. at the Univ of Wisconsin Madison. He is actually a very mellow person but posts some pretty inflammatory stuff on FB as virtue signaling ,as bad or or worse than Instapundit. I'm sure he has never been disciplined, or it would have stopped.

334 Reynolds, " Reginald Denny " is what is called - the good old college try ;-) but Glenn's apology should still be sufficient given the context of his posting. How is it any different than Shrillary's " I apologize for your confusion. . ." If not, well, then Glenn, sometimes you just got to say WTF.

Great story...so make like your trying to go around them until you feel the body under the tire. Huh. Pro tip?

336 In the future, we'll all have to self-flagellate for the leftist powers that be for 15 minutes.

No. I think getting down on your knees and kissing the dirt 5 times a day will probably be good enough.

338 Pretty sure more than a couple of us here have said run them over.
Guess what. If a pack of wild eyes rioters is going to try to stop my vehicle.... I running somebody over.

It's been done, and is by no means a new idea. Back in, I believe, 1982 or so, a group of Islamocommies decided to stage a "protest" at the Isreali consulate in Houston, which at the time was located in Greenway Plaza, near Richmond and Edloe Streets. (The "protest" was over Israel's invasion of Lebanon to run the PLO out) It so happened that there was a building under construction nearby, and the ironworkers took great umbrage to all this, came pouring off the job site and proceeded to open a colossal can of whipass on the Muzzies, running them off.

The Muzzies ended up a few blocks away at Richmond and Buffalo Speedway, and were milling around, blocking traffic and trying to pull any non-Muzzies they came across out of their cars and beat them up (sound familiar?) Along comes a co-worker of mine and her boyfriend in their car, and the Muzzies tried this with them too. The girl's boyfriend did not actually "run over" any of the Muzzies mobbing their car, he just let it roll along at a slow speed. And guess who wins when it comes down to a gang of irate Muslims and a 3000 pound automobile, even when said car is moving at a slow speed. Needless to say, the Islamocommies got out of the way with alacrity, and my co-worker and her boyfriend proceeded about their business...

339 "Idiot savages" - Seattle just suspended their catcher, and bullied him into a grovel long apology, for saying far less.

China's Cultural Revolution used the same tactics (look it up if to aren't familiar), never imagined I'd see it here in the US, much less for it to sweep the nation.

340 ".... irresponsible use of his platform."

Translated: you have no inherent or individual rights. The individual is nothing but what is granted by the collective. And, what is granted by the collective will be determined by its elites, who have granted you this lofty "platform" on the understanding that it will be used "responsibly" i.e. to further the prevailing orthodoxy of the elites.

If you fail to use your granted privilege "responsibly" it will of course be taken away.
And you will get no fruit cup.

341 Ya know, I bet if they followed through on the federal charges for crossing state lines to riot, while the cross-state rioters are in federal pen we wouldn't see riots lasting more than a single night.

342 I don't blame him either. Had he said, "That is not what I meant" the shitstorm would have intensified and lasted longer. That he said that plus apologized for the misunderstanding should make it go away, for now. The militant among those that disagree with him will forever bring this up whenever he says or does something they don't like.

343 Sexual intercourse must be undertaken "responsibly." There are high costs of unwanted pregnancies, and the costs of terminating pregnancies, aside from the elements of human misery and death. The incidence of birth defects is particularly high in mothers with a history of substance abuse, which creates a substantial use of "public resources" not to mention human misery, and of course all of which increases our carbon footprint.

So, of course anyone advocating "irresponsible" intercourse should be forced to recant, or be fired.

Yes that would go over well.

346 I say run them over. I would run them over before I'd put myself at their mercy, regardless of who thinks I should die instead.

Yes, the left really does want to control all our thoughts and words. To hell with 'em.

347 Nothing wrong with having a consistent position on the right to self defense. A gun or the one ton hammer we drive around in, either can and should be used against those who would do you bodily harm.

348 If it's them or me - I vote me every time! Where the fuck are the police? If you're in the street and not in a crosswalk with the walk signal on - lock'em up. What does stopping traffic hav e to with a protest?

351 Why is it I'm having such trouble posting these days?? I was trying to post the polite letter I wrote to the Chancellor at UTK and this stupid website keeps giving me an error message. Anyway, I support Glen completely. If he sets up any legal fund, I'll donate. If UTK fires him, I'll write to my alma mater and urgently suggest they hire him immediately.

352 You have to remember that for leftists words mean what they want them to mean, and the meaning can change from minute to minute. It doesn't matter what you say or how you say it, they will define your words in whatever way is useful to their attack on you.
