Trump's Five Paths to 270

One of those paths is actually to 269, but a tie goes to the House of Representatives, where presumably he'd win.

Interesting stuff.

Clinton's path to 270 is relatively simple: (a) steal Ohio, Florida, or North Carolina; or (b) win her five must-win states and prevent Trump from getting 16 more electoral votes from among the 25 remaining on the board. (If Clinton wins right-leaning Ohio, Florida, or North Carolina, there's no way she'll fail to win the requisite number of left-leaning states.) Trump's task is to win his 3 must-win states (plus the 23 states that are givens) and then follow any one of five different paths to winning the remaining 17 electoral votes he'd need to achieve victory.

Despite everyone pretty much putting Virginia into Queenlackthrone's column, it's the most centrist of all battleground states. It still could surprise.

30 I go to Mark Steyn talking about the "L"

To win a Republican has to flip some Obama voting states. When people say that so and so candidate would be doing so much better v Hillary, I ask which states they would flip. Let's pick Cruz for example. What states would he flip? A million more votes in Texas, a hundred thousand more in SC, 50,000 more in Utah - not helpful.

Trump has some states he can flip.

Supposedly its a 3 point race on averages now. It was like 15 a month ago, so the trend is the right way.

And Terry McAuliffe, Clinton bag man is governor. I was (and still mostly am) pretty sure he can make it a lock for Clinton, he restored a bunch of felons' voting rights but I suspect they don't reliably show up at the polls. But we have all kinds of early voting so they don't have to. I still think that she will win Virginia, and it won't ever be a Red State again.

The question is: Will they remain whores to the big ticket contributors or will the allure of celebrity be enough to make them slink over and try to be President-elect Trump's whores? Most won't abandon the money, but some might consider that the publicity would be worth it.

The flip side is a straw man. The main point is the salient point.

because you say so?

I think people on both sides can be hypocritical on this.

I will say though you'll have to show me the list of Trump supporters that thought Ted Cruz not endorsing spelled the end for Donald Trump and the person responsible if he lost.

Most were just mad at Cruz for being a sore loser, not that held the Election in the palm of his hand.

Posted by: Maritime at September 23, 2016 03:46 PM (fgAYu)

100 Forget recriminations. Say what you will about Cruz, Trump is going to need as many allies as he can get in Congress.

If he really is the outsider he claims to be, he is going to be mighty lonely. And I'm heartened to hear the news that Mike Lee is on the short list to replace Scalia.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at September 23, 2016 03:41 PM (9P3OG)

Trump will have lots of allies in Congress, that's what's worrying. When he proposes something like single payer, all the Dems will hop right on - and, with Trump's cover, most of the Reps. We need some Conservative opponents in Congress.

The Cruz endorsement just shows how silly the idea that the GOP will oppose Trump really is - there will be tons of pressure to back the ostensibly R president.

188 @84 You think the advantage in ground game goes to the guy who has like 2 people per state in his employ and no data operation? All the theories about turnout from Trump supporters are based on voter characteristics and motivation, which is fine to a point, but there IS an actual nuts-n-bolts aspect to voter turnout. I guarantee you the unions will have busses all over the Rust Belt taking people to the polls for Hillary, and Trump has nothing remotely like that in place.

THAT is what voter turnout operations are, not looking into people's souls to find their enthusiasm levels.

The overwhelming majority of voters are a-political; that is, they don't know policy or ideology. They don't visit political blogs to sweat out the details of polls, bills, or political theory. They don't even think there is much at stake to begin with.

They simply respond emotionally or just reflexively based on years of media, pier interaction, or some familial loyalty.

258 If Cuccinelli can come within a point or two in VA (and lobbysist Ed Gillsepie) it's still a jump ball in my opinion.

both of these Republicans were AWFUL.

And the Republicans control the legislature in VA last I checked.

259 The voters are telling you what they want the GOP to do. They want a more populist campaign and "America First" type stuff.

By the way, Trump declared he wants to expand Medicaid THIS WEEK.

272 @239 I've actually run for office in a rural county, where many of these blue collar voters live, within the past decade, and I guarantee you they still use transport to the polls to drive up turnout for their candidates. A lot of people will vote only if you basically hold their hand all the way there, otherwise they'll just head home and make some excuse not to bother.

If you're dismissing what a real "ground game" is and relying on armchair sophistry about voter enthusiasm levels, you are missing what politics really is. Like most things, politics is about actually putting in real work, and it's been a few decades since Trump seems to have cared about anything more than coasting along with minimal effort. I don't expect Bannon to know anything about real work either, but *somebody* on Trump's team has to know you can't just hold rallies everywhere to drive up turnout.

The coup attempt was by members of the Guardia Civil, who attempted to take over the parliament during the debate around the election Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo as prime minister, and I twigged that this was the nephew of Jose Calvo Sotelo, who's arrest and murder by members of the Guardia Civil in 1930 started the Spanish Civil war.
