Overnight Open Thread (23 Sep 2016)

I think the current nationwide police recruit shortage will only get worse, especially in the current climate of hate we're trudging through. Keep that in mind if you think the cops will be responding in a timely fashion when you need to call them. You best be prepared to handle things on your own until they can arrive.

Also, most of you have a first aid kit but have you thought about perhaps having your own trauma kit? Could come in handy with the times we're living in.

Security Clearances

They really do hand out security clearances like candy. CIA Director reveals he was a communist sympathizer.

Another thing they hand out like candy? Immunity. FBI gave chief Clinton aide Cheryl Mills and two other staff immunity. So we're handing out immunity for things "no reasonable prosecutor" would prosecute? Does not compute.

China

China's artificial islands are a bigger deal than you think.

Merging Lanes

Good lord this should be obvious to those with a brain. During my daily commute, I'll never understand why I see folks that will stop in their lane with another quarter mile of open lane ahead of them and try to force their way into a lane already barely creeping along and causing a backup in the lane they're currently in. Transportation officials say that staying in your lane until the lane actually merges is better. Also, don't be that asshat in the already clogged lane and try to straddle the line and block both lanes.

PSA

Yo! If you happen to find a USB memory stick lying around or in your mailbox, you best just throw it away. Cops warn of malware-infected USB sticks placed in mailboxes.

Science Writing

The problem with science writing. Oh this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Obstreperous writers and scientists have identified some of the troubling trends in this way of conveying science to the public. For example: the fetishization of MRI imaging and the “neuro” prefix; the shallow and overly visual obsession with astronomical objects; silly genetic reductionism; the bizarre neglect of fields like chemistry, linguistics, ecology, and geology; wild speculation about the adaptive functions of certain traits in organisms; the irresponsible coverage of irreplicable psychological studies; and just the general credulity towards phrases like "studies show" and "the data says."

I would add the phrases "consensus says", "97% of scientists", and "the science is settled".

Hope they tagged it because I have a feeling it will come back to bite someone in the ass. The amazing rescue of a juvenile shark who beached himself while chasing seagulls.

Yes! This sphere is bigger, 16 tons, 32,000 lbs. Put it on a base feet around (~ 450 in^2). A bit over 70 psi should 'float' it.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at September 23, 2016 10:25 PM (GDulk)

Do you mean a full flush or a slow leak which cause cycling?

A common problem is crappy flapper valves that are imperfectly seated and slowly drain water out of the tank so it runs and refills again and again. Too much chain tension will cause this problem as well.

Posted by: socalcon at September 23, 2016 10:31 PM (UXScn)

81 @ Polliwog.

Likely culprit is not just the flapper, but the seating surface that the flapper "seals" down on to.

Flowmaster sells a kit, which is a combined "new seat" and "new flapper" together. Give that a try.

No matter how good the rubber flapper is, if the seat is eroded, or calcified, either way, some water is going to leak by, and lower the tank level till your float system triggers the fill valve, again.

The issue (other than most circles ate really too small for semis so that putting them n highways like Loveland likes to do is stupid) is that Traffic Circles and Roundabouts are different. In one incoming traffic yields to existing traffic (good/smart) and in the other circle traffic yields to incoming traffic (disaster waiting to happen), unfortunately I can never remember which is which. I do have to give Loveland credit for *lots* of explanatory signage.

86 A common problem is crappy flapper valves that are imperfectly seated and slowly drain water out of the tank so it runs and refills again and again. Too much chain tension will cause this problem as well.

94 Flappers are cheaply made these days.. they try to get by with flimsy, really soft rubber (or whatever material it is).

If you have any imperfections like built up calcium where the flapper seals, it will constantly leak and cycle. Use some fine grit sandpaper where the flapper seals.. that may help.

Gotta disagree. As a PI, your job is to beat that human tendency out of your grad students. It's natural to fall in love with your hypotheses. I used to tell mine that your hypothesis was your baby, and you need to grab your baby by the heels and swing it so its head hits a brick wall. If the hypothesis has merit, it will survive. If not, not.

I deliberately used such evocative imagery to impress on my students the gravity of what had to be done.

Sadly, few PIs seem to do that.

Two hypotheses: (1) the flapper valve isn't sealing properly because of something on the valve or its seat, or (2) the flapper valve is getting hung-up on the chain and isn't allowed to close properly. Second one should be visible if you watch a cycle with the top open. First one should be able to be felt if you run a finger around the seat and on the flapper where the seat contacts.

So-called 'Universal' replacement flappers are notoriously unreliable.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at September 23, 2016 10:25 PM (GDulk)

Do you mean a full flush or a slow leak which cause cycling?

A common problem is crappy flapper valves that are imperfectly
seated and slowly drain water out of the tank so it runs and refills
again and again. Too much chain tension will cause this problem as well.

Posted by: Hrothgar de Plorabble at September 23, 2016 10:30 PM (wCEn4)

Or leaving the chain too loose or with too many spare links flapping around in the tank. Had that happen once with an apartment toilet where the arm was bent down enough that the spare chain would get sucked under the flapper.

We have had this discussion before. They work very well for an intersection of two roads that have similar traffic density. And similar speed limits. They do not work well where you have a suburban two-lane posted at 40 mph crossing a 2-lane secondary highway posted at 60 mph, with eight times the traffic volume. And two traffic circles in quick succession is bad planning period.

Simple. You ask "I wonder what would happen if I add X?" Then you add X. With no expectation of what will result.

Now obviously X will exist in the universe of whatever it is you are interested in. You have some reason for putting it in an experiment, but you don't go the added step of saying "I think Y will happen when I add X". That's where you start going into tunnel vision.

Posted by: Lauren at September 23, 2016 10:45 PM (lZpRv)

Sorry, but gotta disagree a third time. In the absence of a working hypothesis, how do you know what experiments to perform? That's called "screwing around pointlessly in the lab."

You construct your hypothesis, i.e., your model of how this thing works. If that is true, what would I expect? Then I check that. Did I see what I expected? Then so far, so good. If not, my hypothesis has a problem.

Translate this to a prosaic context. Your light doesn't work.

Hypothesis 1: the power is out in the neighborhood.

Experiment 1: you look outside. Your neighbors' lights are on. So much for hypothesis 1.

Hypothesis 2: the power is out in your house.

Experiment 2: you turn on a light elsewhere in your house. So much for hypothesis 2.

Hypothesis 3: the power is out in this particular outlet.

Experiment 3: you take a light you KNOW works and plug it in. It works. So much for hypothesis 3.

Hypothesis 4: the light bulb in your light is burnt out.

Experiment 4: you test the light bulb in a lamp that you KNOW works. It works. So much for hypothesis 4.

Hypothesis 5: the connection between the outlet - which you now know is hot - and the light bulb - which you now know works - is faulty.

Now you pretty much know that the connection is faulty. (There are other experiments you could have done, e.g., replace the lamp that doesn't work with one you know DOES work, to (ahem) short circuit this process, but you get the idea.

The point is that the working hypothesis shapes your thinking by suggesting experiments to solve the problem.

whether it's legal to run down people surrounding your car who threaten
violence and contains links on how to behave in mob situation when in

In part because the rule of law is dead in this country, whether that is legal or not is no longer relevant to me. I'm getting out of there.

As someone said, better to run over 5 than be carried by 6.

Wait, are we talking toilet problems? So, it flushes if I hold down the
handle, but doesn't if I let go to early. If I hold the handle down
until it flushes, then it sticks down and "runs" until I lift the handle
up again. I can't see why the flapper isn't just lifting like a normal
flapper and I have to coddle it.

Posted by: deplorable dagny at September 23, 2016 11:06 PM (09Ay7)

The flapper is supposed to have a bubble of air inside so that it "floats" when it's been lifted off the valve seat....until there's not enough water to float in, when it falls back on the seat and is held there by water pressure. I'd take a look to see if it wasn't being weighted down by something.

------------

Sounds like two problems.
A. The link chain to the flapper is too long. Shorten the hitch point.
And
B. The bushing in the flush handle is sticky. Disassemble and put a light smear of whatever (preferably plumber's grease) thickish lube you might have on the flush handle shaft.

It is possible that step A. alone will take care of things, in that it will restrict the handle rotation a bit.

229 The APAP/acetaminophen/paracetamol one dose limit is supposedly around 7.5 g (7500mg). You might get away with a single dose less than that, but that is usually what will cause acute liver toxicity.

Now, less than that over time and it builds up if you're taking it regularly. The FDA lowered the max daily dose to 3g from 4g recently based on some evidence that 4g/day averaged over several days was enough to cause liver damage in some cases.

235 No roundabouts or anything similar in my city, fortunately. What we do have are diagonal crosswalks. Instead of crossing the street with traffic, there's a period of time when lights are red in all four directions. At that time you can cross one of the streets entering the intersection as normal, or you can cross diagonally to the far corner of the intersection. Not only does it make it easier to get to the far corner of the intersection (should you need to go there), but it also means that you don't have cars trying to turn and holding up traffic while waiting for the pedestrians to get out of the way.

The one problem, of course, is that there are always twits who think that the Don't Walk signal doesn't apply to them, and *do* hold up turning traffic (and everyone behind that car) while they amble across the street.

This is one of several reasons I haven't really sought out a new relationship since it makes things...complicated. along with my in-laws being part of the package since the kids are their only grandchildren.

Excedrin unfortunately also has acetaminophen - it's a mixture of that, aspirin and caffeine.

My advice is just stay away from acetaminophen - if you need an anti-inflammatory or an analgesic, there are tons of other, safer options. Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium (Aleve), Magnesium Salicylate Teyrahydrate (Doan's)...there's plenty to choose from.

Merging lanes.

Probably already been said.

People trying to merge into the traffic lane would be able to do that if people in the travel lane left enough space between themselves and the vehicle ahead of them so one car at a time could squeeze in.

Instead, the people in the travel lane try to close up on the vehicle in front, so that the people trying to merge, can't.

Without going into detail, any guy I married would have to ba able to support me but wouldn't need to support the kids. John had a friend whose younger step siblings got everything his father (to whom they weren't related) had left and he wanted to make sure that didn't happen to our kids.

This is one of several reasons I haven't really sought out a new relationship since it makes things...complicated. along with my in-laws being part of the package since the kids are their only grandchildren.

Sorry. I wish it could *just* be about someone who made me laugh and was healthy enough I was unlikely to lose them soon.

I don't understand these people who murder their spouses (or such) and then get caught because receipts or security cameras show them buying duct tape, big plastic bags, shovels, etc. at Walmart the night their darling disappears. Happens all the time on those crime channels.

I mean, why don't they have all of that stuff on hand anyway? For heaven's sake, Mr. DeVille and I could bump each other off any moment without having to run out for bump-off supplies.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at September 24, 2016 12:15 AM (GDulk)

Most criminals are arrested for stupidity.

There used to be a show on called "Masterminds", and it was about huge crimes. The guys behind the crimes had come up with awesome foolproof plans, but something stupid always got them busted. Usually something dealing with a very tiny amount of money.

Kind of like in the movie Casino when the mob gets busted because one of the collectors kept track of his travel expenses so that he could get reimbursed by the other guys.

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at September 24, 2016 12:40 AM (IqV8l)

The USB hardware standard is flawed -- it loads "what just got plugged-in here?" code in privileged mode before it mounts a file system to check for auto-play. That's why the STUXNET guys used USB against the Iranians. Five years from now, everything will be "secure USB" -- whatever they call it -- or no USB.

There's also a thing going around where you plug-in what looks like a USB flash drive and it fries your motherboard -- you can pack enough lithium batteries into the form factor to do this. The only major manufacturer that isolates the USB drive from motherboard data is Apple -- they're immune. Look for add-on USB isolators to be a thing.

489 The scene with Kathie Brown was the ONLY time in the entire Star Trek original series where Captain Kirk unambiguously has sex with someone.

After she speeds him up to her timeframe, and they can flit around the ship in a flash while everyone else is essentially motionless, the episode goes to a commercial break and when it returns, Kathie is still laying on the bed half-dressed while Kirk is sitting on the edge and putting on his boots, meaning he had gotten undressed and now was getting his clothes back on.

There actually a slang phrase based on this moment, meaning "have sex," but I can't remember what it is exactly -- something like "get your boots on."

But the fantasy unrealism still sells well.

BTW, a state ballot initiative on this November's ballot would require porn shoots to use condoms, and potentially much, much more (e.g. goggles).

If this passes, then the scolding Left will have done more to push porn out of the state than the so-called Religious Right ever could.

But then, it's not as if the porn industry couldn't just go to a neighboring state, which so happened to not have state income taxes or the plethora of OSHA regulations as California... with a place so-conveniently named "Sin City"...

521 BTW, a state ballot initiative on this November's
ballot would require porn shoots to use condoms, and potentially much,
much more (e.g. goggles).

If this passes, then the scolding Left will have done more to push
porn out of the state than the so-called Religious Right ever could.

But then, it's not as if the porn industry couldn't just go to a
neighboring state, which so happened to not have state income taxes or
the plethora of OSHA regulations as California... with a place
so-conveniently named "Sin City"...

526 There's a documentary on Netflix, Hot Girls Wanted, which follows several young women in the online porn industry. It's depressing.
Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile

One of the saddest and depressing things I ever saw was a "porn" tape made by these sleazy guys and uploaded, which tapes were then seized upon by a documentary-maker and re-presented to the viewer in the framework of "Isn't this incredibly sad and abusive" rather than "look at this porn."

The original video was an episode of some porn series where the creeps go out and look for "aspiring models" and lure them into the studio and then cajole and bully the girls into degrading sex, filming the entire arc from beginning to end. I guess part of the thrill for the sadist watching it is seeing how the "stupid bitch" can so easily be tricked into becoming a victim.

Anyway, since most of this would be illegal in America, the episode takes place in some central American nation like Costa Rica or something, for real, and what makes the episode so compelling, I guess both as porn and as a documentary about porn, is that the girl that the guys lure into their trap was, on a sexiness and beauty scale of 1 to 10, about an 11. But so, so naive. She didn't even seem to realize just how eye-poppingly attractive she was, and that there was no need for her to get involved with these creeps -- any legitimate talent agency would nab her in a second and make her world-famous. But instead, these horrible grubby pot-bellied perverts sit her down for an "interview" in a sleazy hotel room and over the space of several minutes eventually bully and manipulate her into performing oral sex on one of them, as he literally punches her on the side of the head and calls her every degrading name in the book.

Made you just want to kill the guys, and feel so sorry for the girl. One wonders whatever happened to her after the video. Never heard from again.

john paul jones would play sometimes 2 or 3 separate studio recordings a day, as wall as producing and arrangements. he had a formal musical training in classical music and was accomplished on keyboards as well as string instruments. very impressive.

There was a notorious murder here in the early 90's - a dude named Jesse Anderson stabbed his wife to death in a mall parking lot and claimed a black guy had attacked. Except the knife was a very expensive kitchen knife he had purchased shortly before the murder and the sales clerk clearly remembered selling it to him.

A friend of my sister's was a neighbor of Anderson's and friends with his wife. They had 4 children, he was a pillar of the community and nobody thought he was capable of such an act. (The asshole stabbed her in the eyes.) He visited my sister's friend and her husband a day or so after the murder and sobbed as he told them this bullshit story about being attacked by a thug. They completely bought it and defended Anderson, until his story fell apart - which didn't take long.

He was later beaten to death in prison - along with Jeffrey Dahmer. Good riddance to both of them.

White suburban teens trying to be "hard" were seen as entertainment or lunch.

The folks I knew growing up had the rule that only "punk assed b*tches " weren't willing to fight one on one. That was the hyper macho culture I was growing up in.
As the drug trade cranked up, that changed. A guy I went to school with got murdered by someone who went by the new rules. They outnumbered him and wanted to fight. He said to make it fair they should drop two and he'd fight. They shot him in the head.

I agree. Somebody said the other day that police were created to protect criminals from ordinary citizens dishing out "rough justice".

I myself have wondered how many lynching "victims" were actually rapists or child molesters who got what they deserved. We've been brainwashed into thinking that they were all innocent victims of Klan-like racism, but there were plenty of whites lynched as well.

Looks like we're heading back in that direction.

not to excuse plagiarism (which some of led zeppelin was egregiously) but as picasso famously advised artists: "don't borrow, steal".

King Arthur: [about the inscription on the rock inside the cave of Caerbannog] What does it say, Brother Maynard?
Brother Maynard: It reads, "Here may be found the last words of Joseph of Aramathia. He
who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the holy grail in the Castle
of Aaauuuggghhh... "

King Arthur: What?
Brother Maynard: The Castle of Aaauuuggghhh!
Sir Bedevere: What is that?
Brother Maynard: He must have died whilst carving it.
King Arthur: Oh come on!
Brother Maynard: Well that's what it says.
King Arthur: Look, if he was dying, he wouldn't have bothered to carve 'Aaaauuuggghhhh'. He'd just say it.
Sir Galahad: Maybe he was dictating it.
Sir Robin: Does it say anything else?
Brother Maynard: Yes. "And a new day will dawn For those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter."
All the Knights: [hold up torches]

More people are welcomed in on an ONT, but they can also get more razzing. And, though we've been blessed by wonderfully diverse original themes -- ONTs tend to drift into weird side-pockets.

One of the aspects of the internet is doing amateur anthropology by visiting the porn aggregators and seeing what genres have sprung up. I'm not sure of when it started but around two years ago it became apparent that the new twist on traditional settings was finding a following. It's not enough now to have a video of a supposed audition where the interviewer gets it on with the interviewee, it has to be 'fake.' The premise being that this is a real audition as far as the applicant knows but the whole thing is a setup to trick people into performing for the camera.

It's a bit overly meta but I guess it's supposed to be more interesting in that the viewer is somehow in on the scam. Over the two years since I first noticed it a bunch of variants have sprung up. Not just 'woman paying her taxi fare with a sex act' but the taxi being a fake equipped with hidden cameras to catch the unsuspecting.

This must work well for a good sized audience since there is now so much of it. I guess it is the porn world's reaction to so-called reality shows that have a writing staff.

There is certainly the possibility that the general groupthink has gone rancid, and a new perspective should jog things into a better place, but extraordinary jogs require extraordinary insights -- and a passing familiarity with the previous mindset. Look at this. Three versions of "When the Levee Breaks":

662 I've got some good news and some bad news for folks looking at the WindowFX projection kit available from Home Depot for $70 for hacking. The bad news is that it runs off the Mstar TSUMV59XUT-Z -- which is a full-fledged microcontroller. The whole menus-thing runs out of flash. There is no exposed video to hijack. Further, the keystone cannot be improved -- it's just the tilt on a Fresnel lens. You can easily rip new vids off of youtube, however.

Those images would hearken back to the civil rights protests of the 50's and 60's in the South. That's a losing proposition in every way possible. A warning to disperse, then rubber bullets, escalating to the real thing if necessary, is the way to go.

711 On the traffic merging:

People who merge at the last possible spot when there's already a mile-long backup are causing the backup. There's no two ways about it. Traffic engineers should be telling people to merge early, when the warning signs (which is either a physical, metal sign or the early signs of a long line of cars) say they should. Telling people to drive to the forced merge point is the worst advice possible.
