Sunday Night Overnight Open Thread [Mis. Hum.]

Why are these Canadians being asked to sell their homes?

On the far eastern edge of Canada sits Little Bay Islands, a beautiful, dying village divided by crisis. The fish plant was shuttered half a decade ago, and most supporting businesses – as well as the school – have closed with it. Perry Locke is among the tiny population that’s left. He served as the mayor, the fire chief and now runs the power-generating station. His son was the last student enrolled in town.

Fishing villages like this one built Newfoundland and Labrador, a coastal province sent into a tailspin by a fishery collapse, oil-price slump and mounting debt that left it with Canada’s most severe fiscal and demographic crisis. The provincial government now is pushing to close places like Little Bay Islands altogether rather than service them, offering Locke and his neighbors at least $250,000 (US$189,000) each to leave — and spurring a bitter, three-year fight over whether to cash out or endure.

It’s like a disease. Once a community gets infected, there’s no cure for it
“It’s like a disease. Once a community gets infected, there’s no cure for it. You’ll either stay sick from it, or you’ll die,” said Locke, 51, standing on his porch in July overlooking the bay. He voted to stay, worried he’ll lose his job if everyone leaves and the power station closes. Many residents now blame him for ruining a windfall. “Nothing we can do to change it now. The damage is done. And the damage is irreversible.”

It looks like a beautiful location. What would you do? Personally, I'm glad that I do not have to make that decision.

The AoSHQ gives the following advice. If you are to leave Little Bay Islands don't move here.

But, if you want to visit the Big Knob Grange Fair in Beaver County go for it.

Insert the word "empathy" into any search engine and you will come up with a large number of sites. When does one learn empathy? Would you have it when you reached the pinnacle of foreign diplomat service, such as the United Nations?

If you are the U.N Ambassador from the U.S.A. you speak gibberish.

“If diplomats were to spend more time in the theater, museums and cinemas, we might have a more just and humane world,” quipped from Samantha Power, US ambassador to the United Nations, in a Sept. 16 speech at the Lincoln Center Global Exchange in New York City.

“We all know what genuine empathy feels like. I’ve not only experienced it myself but seen it happen in one of the most thick-skinned and cynical professions out there,” she joked. “I’m speaking of course of diplomats.” The former journalist and Pulitzer prize winning author has long used theater to address an empathy deficiency among grizzled UN ambassadors.

Empathy.

Haiti in 2005, UN peacekeeping troops killed 23 people, including children, in a poor area of Port au Prince. Doctors without Borders reported that they had treated 27 people for gunshot wounds - around 20 of them were women under the age of 18. In December 2007, more than 100 UN soldiers from Sri Lanka were deported under charges of sexual abuse of underage girls.

A video was also released showing four Uruguayan troops in Haiti laughing while allegedly raping an 18 year old Haitian boy. Two Pakistani peacekeepers were recently sentenced for raping a 14 year old Haitian boy. There are also strong claims that fecal waste from UN troops deposited in a river spread cholera bacteria in Haiti which killed more than 6,000 Haitians and infected more than 400,000.

This excerpt is from 2012. There have been more episodes of empathy by the U.N. since then.

ISIS doesn't know the definition of narrative fight.

But, Josh Earnest does.

"What I can tell you is that we are, when it comes to ISIL, we are in a fight, a narrative fight with them, a narrative battle," Earnest said, using an alternate name for the terrorist group, which is also known as the Islamic State or Daesh. "And what ISIL wants to do is they want to project that they are an organization that is representing Islam in a fight, in a war against the West and a war against the United States."

What do you do on your commute? Nap? Practice self-restraint? People watch? Mentally plan for work?

But according to an Association for Psychological Science blog post this week, new research suggests another reframing trick to make commuting just a little less awful — one that’s probably more productive than napping, if not as enjoyable. A new paper led by Columbia Business School doctoral student Jon Jachimowicz found that people who use their transit time to mentally plan for work are better off than those who spend it on other things.

The Dodgers came back from a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth as Corey Seager's solo homer forced extras and Charlie Culberson homered in the tenth for a walk-off win, one that claimed the division for L.A. and gave Vin Scully the chance to call one final walk-off in his last time behind the microphone at Dodger Stadium.

9 So, does everyone think Trump actually prepped for the debate?

Would have to think there are people who would rather vote for him than Hillary, but just aren't sure he's taking this seriously enough and has a firm grasp of the issues. That could be alleviated if he shows he's competent and knowledgeable. IMO, he was terrible in all the primary debates and will need to raise his game considerably. He will not get away with those kinds of answers again.

I don't know if they non gendered people are real or just actors. If they're actors they do a great job. I guess it's lacking in compassion for me to be annoyed at them, but i agree with the main woman. There used to be a term for girls who didn't act overlyfeminine; It was called "tomboys". You didn't worry about which of 57 varieties of gender you fit into.

If you get off the Interstate Highway System in places like rural Iowa, you might find, as you go cross crountry, the occasional roadside sign; the green and white official state sign with a name on it, a place name that was once a farming community and is now only one or two empty houses.

Back in the day before automobiles, the place was probably a booming farming community. Back in the day when farms were forty or eighty acres.

Over time people left those forty acres for an industry job in the big city, and some of the neighbors bought up the land. More people left, farms grew larger. Now there are a few very large farms, and a sign on the road where the village used to be.

161 So, thanks to MH I'm going to retell an opossum story that's less about my story than it is about the omniscience of the Horde.

Way back when I was married I got a call at work from my wife about some large dead thing having appeared in one of our garbage cans. It was hilarious. I played the voice mail on speaker for all of my colleagues.

But I went home to do the manly things. I looked in the trash can and it wasn't a dead thing. I was an opossum playing 'possum. So I decided to take it out back to the woods and considered which firearm to use if it were rabid and turned on me. I didn't think shotgun or .30/30 would go over well with the neighbors, so I went for a varmint round in .22 and dragged the can out back.

Well, the story as I told it ended up with the possum taking one backwards glance and toddling away. No rabid attacks and no shooting of the vermin.

So when I told this story, not one but two Morons assured me that it could not have been rabid because rabies needs a body temperature of 96 degrees to incubate and possums run at 92.

The sheer amount of stuff the Horde knows will never cease to astound me.

236 Since the Fiancee was off at a quilting class today, and it was too damned hot to do much outside, I made substantial progress on LookingGlass 2. I lit up all five gigabit ethernet ports; located the Win7 box I had tasked with lighting up the SSDs; downloaded an even more recent version of the update utility; lit up the SSDs; and booted Ubuntu to check for any hardware incompatibilities. Had an NVIDIA card driving a VGA connector out of DVI and no problemo.

Next up, I have to partition the SSDs and get Ubuntu to boot Dom0 off them. There's a lot of stuff in the literature about "Ubuntu Server" (minimalist installation to run headless) and trying to run Dom0 in a tiny partition. So far as I can tell, that's for people with 128G SSDs.

I'm thinking of deinstalling Flash and Firefox in Dom0 just to keep "muscle memory" from opening a security hole. Dom0 needs "apt-get update", "apt-get upgrade", and "apt-get dist-upgrade" from the internet and nothing more -- everything else can "talk to the hand".

Posted by: TickledPink at September 25, 2016 11:29 PM (F5hTl)

Back when I was a VP, one of our sales guys checked himself into an ER because he could hear his heartbeat. They decided to keep him in for observation. It turned-out to be a congenital heart problem (aneurysm blowout) and he coded while they were transferring him to the bed -- woke up with one joint to each of his fingers and both legs gone below the knees.

His brother had had the same deal while water skiing a couple of years prior -- and was probably gone before he stopped in the water.

An aneurysm is like when an innertube develops a bulge -- it's a weak spot....and, being thin, it can transmit sounds (like a heartbeat, which must be loud inside blood vessels) to other tissues.

I'm not a doctor, don't play one on TV, and have only faulty memories of anecdotal evidence.....but you might want to have that checked out.

Ooh, good question. I vote around halfway through the debates, after she's softened up the crowd with accusations of all the standard -isms and -phobias. Then she climaxes with Hitler, and winds down with some of the more extreme liberal wishes such as transgender surgery for military recruits, which won't seem so bad after Hitler.

318 A couple weeks ago I tore my fingernail on my left index finger. I have no idea how it happened. It was about a 1 cm tear horizontally in the middle of the nail.

Since then, I've been keeping it trimmed and have been careful not to catch it on anything to make it worse. All I can do is wait for it to grow out.

Here's the interesting part: At first the tear was horizontal across the nail. Now, a couple of weeks later, it looks to be a 20-30 degree angle. This means that the nail material doesn't grow straight out, but rotates somehow as it grows.

319 I used to live in a neighborhood where there was a Sonic on the other side of the block, an AW one block away, and a Fazoli's two blocks away.

I went to Sonic frequently for that Bacon Cheddar Toaster Burger, to AW for their cheeseburgers, and to Fazoli's for their Twice-Baked Pasta.

That neighborhood was a fast-food paradise. I'm amazed that I was still thin when I moved out after a few years of living there. And, sadly, those places are all gone now, too.

As I have mentioned before on numerous occasions, I believe that the most merciful extermination of most animals is nitrogen asphyxiation (possibly with a CO2 scrub). Nitrogen is colorless, odorless, and comprises 78% of air in the first place. If there were something to annoy you about nitrogen, you'd already be experiencing it. Oxygen is necessary to support life, but we're ill-equipped to detect it (or its absence). In the presence of CO2, we will suffer discomfort, pant, and breathe hard -- regardless of whether there is sufficient oxygen to sustain life.

Nitrogen environments are widely used in the semiconductor industry -- and nitrogen pipelines crisscross Silicon Valley. The classic scene for a nitrogen leak is people laying on the floor -- they were doing whatever they were doing and ran out of oxygen and lost consciousness. Other people might have walked over and poked 'em before they ran out of oxygen, too.

Lamenting the Olde and True Blogosphere, before the conglomerations of PJM, Hot Air and it's Borgification into Salem, etc.

Back when Vodkapundit was a BLOG. Hell, even Fat Ed at Captain's Quarters was more individually accountable then; not protected by a Facebook commentariat and Big Media cover.

When Rachel Lucas was the living definition of snark and ... well, RACHEL LUCAS!

Acidman yet lived, Bill Whittle was a long-form commenter in Ms. Lucas' comment section, and Wretchard was still Bill the Cat with a +160 I.Q.

Conglomeration has proven to not be beneficial to the blogosphere.

And here we are, remnants, misfits, deplorables and irredeemibles all. (fk the splling, I'm indrunkxicated)

Ace of Spades is WHAT the frikkin' BLOGS were meant to BE.

None of this Disquss crap. Facebook can burn in Hell, and should.

Love Insty, and he's a rock, but all of what built PJM was far better individually, than collectively.

We're about all that's left from what was the Golden Age of the Blogs.

And with love to the Daywalkers. we who call the ONT "home", perhaps the most in kind with what was, all in all, not quite fifteen years back.

God Bless Ace for this place.

And the same to every single COB and Open who lends a hand and a shoulder to the wheel.

And finally, to Pixy.

I think you are correct. The Lincoln-Douglas were historic as they defined the subject of slavery (Dems were in favor of it).

The advent of TV led to the Nixon-Kennedy debates on TV. Those who saw it on TV thought
Kennedy won, those that heard it on radio thought Nixon won.

Good point, which is just one more reason why they need to stop dragging their heels about switching everything to IPv6. The last few digits of every IPv6 address are unique to the individual network card, thus you can ban a particular computer.

Since everyone else took a pause, let's do some basics. Every router takes an upstream address (217.165.98.17 and shares it out to a bunch of downstream addresses (192.168.0.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8....) based on rules. Those rules are things like "if 192.168.0.10 talked to 123.123.123.1, then any responses from 123.123.123.1 to 217.165.98.178 should go to 192.168.0.10".

I kinda like spiders, and I mostly blame Spider-Man for that. Also living in a place where we don't get black widows, or brown recluses, or funnel-webs, so I buy the slick spider propaganda about them keeping the vermin insects under control, and would I just be on my way, thank you.

So when I wander downstairs, and encounter that dark half-dollar-sized 8-legged bastard, I may be startled, but I then I recover, and tip my hat (I don' wear a hat) and say, thank you, pal, for keeping the parasitic six-legged insects at bay.

And we go our amicable ways.

But upstairs.

Upstairs. What is with these weird ecru assholes? These pale malevolent mofos. Spiders are supposed to be black. And not wandering over my teakettle, my toaster, or my breadknife. Who the fuck are you shits? What the fuck do you want?

Went and took way too long of a nap yesterday and now I'm up way too early.

Here's something I somehow just discovered: an album-length instrumental tribute to the victims of 9/11 called "End of Innocence" by keyboardist Tony Kaye. Tony Kaye was a founding member of the British prog-rock legends YES and served two stints with the band, from 1968-1970 and 1983-1994. He is currently the keyboardist with YES spin-off band CIRCA. CIRCA's new album "Valley of the Windmill" is quite the excellent slab of modern Prog.

This is some nice late-nite listening. Kind of reminds me of Vangelis.

This Is No Shit:

back in the late 80's, i was riding in the back of a 21/2 ton, coming back from Pendleton after a fun filled weekend of trying to teach people how to stay alive in an NBC environment.

i had, among all the other accoutrements of a large unit, numeri M-11 decon sprayers, which, IRL, would hold about 1 1/2 quarts of DS-2, the stuff which would, allegedly, neutralize all the Warsaw Pact chem agents. (bad old days)

for training, one would fill them with water, then simulate their use, since the actual chemicals were/are caustic.

to prevent corrosion, there was a powder you would deposit in the bottles, in between uses, which itself was caustic, and which would cause painful sensations on human skin, should you get this sprayed on you...

(ask me how i know %-)

so, there i was, sitting in the back of a Deuce, ogling all the hawt SYT's, and MILFs, cruising the 4 or 5 Hour Freeway in the OC, whilst we lumbered our way home to Los Alamitos, when i saw a shirtless guy in a Trans-Am T-top (ala Biden) weaving his way through traffic with a SE grin on his face, sans shirt.

when he got closer, and maneuvered right next to me, on the LR corner of the truck, it was obvious that he was nude, and masturbating, and that i was his preferred observer.

i grabbed up one of the M-11s, leaned out the back of the truck, and gave him the whole contents of the bottle in through his open windows

for a moment, he thought it was great...cool water mist and all...

then he GTFO of Dodge.

The McDonald's had served its coffee at 185° F, which was considered to be hot enough to melt steel. I did a little personal research around the house and found these numbers:

I wash my hands in 120° F water.
My drip coffee machine - which turns out okay coffee, but nothing near hot - keeps its meh coffee at 161° F. And that coffee is adequately hot for around the house but nothing near commercial level.

Anyway, those are the numbers around my house, to give some perspective to the arguments about the ridiculous coffee case.

St Peter replies, "No... He thinks He's Arnold Palmer!"

442 Well, I just set family relations back a couple of centuries by responding to my idiot sister in law's post on Facebook. She "feels strongly" about an old article claiming that Trump is really a fascist. After all, since he appeals to the rednecks and other easily led fools and conservatives (oh, I guess I repeat my self there, in her world), that's just like Hitler in the '30's.

So, I posted how perfectly idiotic I felt that was, and then said I'd rather vote for Trump than for an unindicted felon who committed treason as Secretary of State, probably murdered or caused murder to be done, and is so full of crap her eyes have gone brown.

The response was a lot of virtue signalling on her part, along with talking down to me because I am so ignorant and angry that I obviously can't see that Hillary is the one who made Bill so powerful, and that I should, as a woman in a mostly male profession, be "validated" by having a woman voted into the Presidency of the US.

Imagine how I answered THAT hot mess.

Soooooo, Christmas cruise in California this year may be a bit, um, uncomfortable. I hope the bar is well stocked.

446 I attended a family gathering the other day-a combo "mega-birthday" for several relatives.

My rich, Liberal sister and I have had a longstanding "no arguing politics-don't even bring it up" agreement which after many long years she violated with various anti-Trump remarks.

I kept my peace. I did note that in a large gathering of mostly Democrats, nobody else went along with the virtue signaling.

452 It looks like a beautiful location. What would you do? Personally, I'm glad that I do not have to make that decision.

I would surmise that this little town has the common problem that a lot of other places here in the US have, and it doesn't matter what size the town or city is. They were dependent on one industry. And as that industry flourished the town flourished. And with all those people and taxes rolling in they embraced socialism and the FSA came in like flies seeking the eternal dog turd in the yard. Then the "greens" shut down their only industry, the workers moved on to where they could find jobs and the only people left were the FSA and the politicians who supported them.

We have the same problem here; the prime example is Detroit. Detroit was a thriving city long before the auto industry moved in. But after the autos moved in and everything else moved out, the unions and the FSA came. after the socialists, the fascists, and the greens killed the US auto industry so went Detroit. And now it exists solely because of the MI and US taxpayers right now.

A city can not exist when it is only supported by the FSA and the crooked politicians who cater to them to get elected.

This is why socialism and its ultimate end, communism has never worked and never will work. This is why you have to be extremely stupid if you work and pay taxes to ever vote for a Democrat. You may as well take a straight razor from one of those abandoned barber shops and cut your throat.

453 I decided to go ahead and get my debate comments in now, before the rush.

The Shrill One will lie her ass off, as usual.
If she doesn't up and croak on the stage, the MFM will adjudge her the winner.
Donald will say something controversial. This alone will generate 800 comments here during the 90 minute debate.
There will be close to 3000 comments during the debate thread(s). Another couple of thousands afterwards.

I don't pray, but I'm sure hoping Trump doesn't choke or blow up. He's pretty good at this stuff, so his chances are decent. A few coughing jags by the FAB will add 3 points to Trump's polling.

As for tourism, the only places in Canada that have real tourism are out near the Rockies for scenery in the Summer and skiing in the Winter. This town has neither of those to draw tourists.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, September 26, 2016. On this day in 1914 in the early days of the US march to Fascism and Socialism in the United States the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was established by the Federal Trade Commission Act passed by a Democrat Congress after being pushed by the socialist President Woodrow Wilson. The chief goal of the new commission was to attack business and capitalism in the name of protecting the people.

464 Civil Rights museum in Greensboro, NC denies Trump visit.

We did not honor the request of the Donald Trump team because we thought they demonstrated, in their approach was disrespectful, so therefore we did not grant that request, said Early Jones, co-founder of the museum.

This museum was largely financed by the State of NC and I suspect that he was "disrespectful" because he would not agree to give them a bucket of cash. They claim they would not allow a visit by Scankles either. Since she has not even asked how was she "disrespectful"? I suspect that their lawyers cautioned them on their non-profit tax free status.

465 The Choom King packing of the courts is felt again as the 6th circuit court of appeals reverses a lower court ruling to declare OH's purging of voter rolls IAW the Motor Voter Law compromise is unconstitutional. This is a common practice in many States to purge people who have either moved or have died by striking names of people who have not voted for a number of years. It has been around since I first started noticing these things decades and decades ago. And since the Democrats want to get rid of this then the Republicans should repeal the Motor Voter law. Most blue States do not do this anyway in violation of the law.

What story are we talking about here? Any mammal can get rabies, but it is rare in possums. And scientists do "think" it is because of their lower body temperature. But the key words here are "rare but possible" and "think".
