I'm exhausted.
I think I'm going to do a half-day tomorrow. I figure I'm going to be up late on Monday with the debate, so I figure I kinda should get a half day off. Here's a thread idea. Maybe a recurring one. So the Medical Monitoring thread seems popular. I was thinking: What about a self-improvement thread that's not about fitness and health? Like a thread about projects you've been putting off for years but want to complete. An accountability thread for finally doing something -- learn woodcraft, take up fencing, take up bird-watching, take the wife dancing, whatever it is -- you've long wanted to do but kept finding "better things to do." If anyone has any ideas like that, maybe mention them here. If there's interest, I can put up this thread every Thursday evening. Oh, and if you don't like that thread idea: Mitch McConnell and the establishment have sold us out and given the Democrats all they were hoping for in the new CR. But do tell me how Trump isn't conservative enough and will compromise the unshakable conservative principles of this piece of shit, unscrupulous, donor-servicing organization.Comments

I researching and writing kid's books (5th grade and up) on WWII Eastern Europe. The paragraphs in the history books keep getting smaller and smaller on WWII, so I thought some fictional stories that have some actual truths in them might be a way to sneak some learning into the kids.

It's not silly! I would love to learn to sew, but I have an irrational fear of sewing machines, having sewn a finger in one when I was a toddler. My mother was a milliner and seamstress to society women when she was young, and got a real job after the kids were born. Hats weren't such a trendy thing after a while. The ones she had left in her closet were truly beautiful. I wish she had taught me how to do that and sew. I still have the formals she made which were stunning-hand beaded, actual whale bone corsets, mercy.

Scholarly question for the Horde:
Amongst the sections at the Mohammed Image Archive I have two that are titled
"European Medieval and Renaissance Images"
and
"Book Illustrations."
Currently there is no consistent dividing line between the two categories, especially when it comes to very early printed books, some of which are in "European Medieval and Renaissance Images" while others are in "Book Illustrations."
I need to create an easily understood and consistent rule to distinguish between the two categories. And this is what I came up with:
If an illustration is in a book printed with movable type (i.e. post-Gutenberg Bible -- after 1454 AD) with multiple copies, then it goes in the "Book Illustrations" section -- even if the image is in and of itself a "European medieval or Renaissance" image.
But if an illustration is in a "folio" that is lettered by hand and made in individually handcrafted copies one by one prior to 1454 AD, then it counts as a "manuscript" and goes in the "European Medieval and Renaissance Images" category -- even if in a few rare cases it was handmade after 1454.
Does that make sense?
Short version:
Printed with type and mass-produced = book, regardless of date.
Individually hand-lettered one by one = non-book, regardless of date.
Agree? Or is there a better way?

My big problem is the little voice in my head that keeps telling me that whatever novel I'm working on is a big piece of shit, and that everybody who reads it will silently chuckle at me for having the dumb hubris to ever think I could write something worthwhile. Or perhaps they'll feel sorry for me, because none of my loved ones had the heart to tell me that I was wasting my time.
Thing is, I know objectively that the little voice is wrong. I know because at least once a year I come across a novel that is such a big, steaming turd that I actually feel embarrassed for the writer. I'm not talking about stuff that's been self-published; I'm talking about novels by supposedly-professional writers, put out by established publishing houses, and evidently popular enough to be stocked by the local Barnes & Noble. (I'm not knocking self-publishing, btw; I fully intend to go that route if I can ever finish.)
Some are legit bestsellers. Not "bestsellers," but real, honest-to-God bestsellers that have legitimately been purchased and read by millions of people.
I read these things and I'm like, no matter how bad my novel is, it could never be THIS bad. There is no way. I don't think I'd be capable of writing something this bad if I tried. And yet this clown actually got a paycheck for writing this thing!
And then I get another big burst of inspiration to give it another shot. And then, about 10,000 words in, the Little Voice grows loud enough to cause me to lose interest.
I know some Morons out there have written novels, so I imagine y'all are familiar with my dilemma. Any suggestions for getting over the hump?

I was doing great until my youngest was about 7 or 8. Then I really slacked off. Then my mom passed away, and I inherited her boxes and boxes of photos. Last year my mother in law passed away, and incredibly, no one in the family wanted the photos. So we took them. More photos.
It's kinda like the genome project of photos. But I really, really want to do it.

Good for you and many blessings for your recovery. had them both done together 3 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Could have had it done many years ago but was too young actually so they would have worn out, and Iwasnt ready to give up running, martial arts etc. so pain. Waited till I used a came and knee braces. I drugged my way through PT so I could push it and it was worth it. But isn't it true you get the best drugs when you can't dance?I will surely pray for you Teresa. Please keep us posted.

Wow, Weasel, that's very kind of you. My husband and some of my kids actually go to a range now and again, and I should really go with them. I used to have to be qualified years ago, but haven't shot in a long, long time. Handgun though, not rifle. I doubt if I'm tough enough for that.

Good luck. I had a meniskis (sp?) tear this summer, had it removed and found out I have arthritis. My knee feels fine but I know I'll probably have total knee surgery in the future.

Once I couldn't run anymore, I crossed over to a Nordic track ski machine. They work great and don't break- just ropes, bearings, and pulleys.
Great workout, low impact, and you can pick them up cheap anywhere.

Turns out yoga is great for the mind. I only do 15-20 minutes a day. I ended up drawing again, something I haven't done for 20 years. I have a tablet for my computer. Can paint with it too. Fantastic.

Ideas in no particular order:
1. Write the characters' backgrounds first. Ask yourself enough questions about the characters to the point where you know exactly what they would do given any circumstance. "EG: what would he do with $100/gold/credits/etc? What would he do with $1,000,000?"
2. Write on a schedule and don't give yourself excuses. You don't have to only work on the novel at that time. You just have to be putting words on the screen.
3. Keep those bad novels and when you don't feel like working on your writing, force yourself to re-read them. After a few minutes you are likely to be 'inspired' again.
4. No author's first piece of fiction is a masterpiece. Write short stories to practice. Work on your weakest points whatever it might be. Find an editor if you can.

Yes, Shreveport is not a bad drive from Nacogdoches. Ft. Polk is about 20 minutes more of a drive, but there is nothing out there. At least if you go to Bossier City, you can go out to dinner and maybe hit a casino.

i think Scrivener is a worthwhile purchase for $40 or $45. It calls itself an "environment for creative expression" or something. It's a hacked up simple word processing program with doo dads that help you write (like scratchpads, so you're not intimidated by the "What I write now shall endure throughout history" thing). You can also make up chapters wherever and just start writing, so if you know a scene in chapter 14, you can write what you're thinking about and then come back later and write the preceding chapters (and finish chapter 14).
It's not a panacea or anything but I think it is helpful.

I suppose doing it by schools would be less useful because you want something that everyone would be able to ID, and I am not sure that dividing it into languages is terribly useful since a lot of the early stuff is in Latin and you would need to consider the origin.

all novels are a piece of shit until you work and work at them until they look halfway decent.
it shouldn't surprise or discourage anyone that their novel is a piece of shit on the first draft. the first draft is where it's expected to still have plotting and pacing problems and questions of motivation and bullshit placeholder writing you just slapped down because you were too tired to think of the right way to say it.
the first draft of a novel is the like the first three months of an exercise program-- what results are you expecting right off the bat?
it's the process of doing the work that makes it better

I don't even know why I vote. I live in Austin. Doesn't matter if it's a local, state or national election - the outcome is pre-ordained.
Austin is dark blue, the state is just as red. My US rep has a safe seat apparently and 1 Senator is anti-what just happened today and the other probably helped write the CR.

the Scrivener program I mentioned above has a setting where you can specify x words per day (I did 3000 words) and so long as you actually check in with the thing, and do it early in the day, you will find you're putting up a lot of words.
of course, once you stop and set it aside.... well, no more progress.
you really have to keep at it. A novel is kind of a white-heat thing despite taking months to complete. If you do not finish it in that white heat initial enthusiasm stage, you WILL set it aside, probably forever.
so as this person said: butt in chair, fingers at keyboard, no excuses, pump out 3000 words a day as a goal. If you only do 1000, fine, but try to hit 3000.

Pro tip for generating text: use speech recognition. Think how quickly you could read 3000 words out loud.
Sure, the product of speech recognition will need a lot of work to clean up, but it's also easy to dictate several different versions, and later select the one you like the best (or can use as the basis for a revised version).
The main thing is how empowering it is. I used to have to write reports on various documents, and with speech recognition it was easy. I'd pick up the document, refresh my memory of its contents, then dictate my thoughts on it before moving on to the next. Thirty minutes later, I was done with what would otherwise be an afternoon's work.

my only objection would be: If you learn any real romance language, you now know esperanto as a bonus.
esperanto seems to just be romance languages with all irregular verbs regularized and so forth.
spanish is already 99% regular.

Another pro tip: when you're rolling, never stop to look up anything. Just keep going, based on your recollection, and put a flag on the item. I used to use "TK" (for "to kome"), which would be kicked out instantly by a spell-checker (a trick I learned from IIRC Time magazine). Then, once you've got the conceptual guts written, you can go back and look up substantiating details at leisure.

i was, and I was on a white-hot pace, then I didn't write one day, and then I didn't write the next day, and the next day, and suddenly it was yet another abandoned book, and I'd gotten like 45,000 words into it (out of an estimated 100,000 total).

Have to concur - I find that much of Esperanto sounds a whole lot like a mix of Spanish and Portuguese with some English roots thrown in to keep it "honest". That said, it being sold as a "universal" language is utter nonsense as there is absolutely nothing marginally Eastern about it.

I would say (based on what others say) that editing as you're writing is probably not optimal. A lot of people suggest the Green Hand/Red Hand distinction -- in Green Hand mode, you're in pure production mode, no critial thinking, no editing (except for the most fundamental kind -- like if you realize that what you're writing doesn't make sense)
You only go into critical Red Hand when you have a mass of words written.

When I was in school, 1st year Latin was on learning the grammar; 2nd year was reading Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars; 3rd year was reading Cicero; 4th year the Aeneid.If you're into ancient literature, there are tons of materials waiting.Latin is an ending-focused language, so there is a good amount of memorization that needs to happen before you get there though.

I showed a video to the guy on the ranch to help me divide orchids. It was in portuguese. I recognize it, but he understood it. he translated it for me and I was jealous.
The guy on the ranch can also understand the old rancher next door when he speaks Italian. It may be a few words are the same and he picks it up through context.

As for Latin and Greek, they're both Indo-European languages and when the Latin grammarians were working out the rules for their own language, they had a lot of help from the Greeks. So you can apply the rules and good bits of the vocabulary from one to the other.
Hebrew, not so much. Because it's a Semitic language.

i think Scrivener is a worthwhile purchase for $40 or $45. It calls itself an "environment for creative expression" or something. It's a hacked up simple word processing program with doo dads that help you write (like scratchpads, so you're not intimidated by the "What I write now shall endure throughout history" thing). You can also make up chapters wherever and just start writing, so if you know a scene in chapter 14, you can write what you're thinking about and then come back later and write the preceding chapters (and finish chapter 14).
It's not a panacea or anything but I think it is helpful.

If you haven't already, develop the characters. Know who they are, what their background is, etc. I would suggest it would be better to write too much instead of too little to help you fully bring the characters to life. You can always edit out any excesses later.
Next, think of an arc for at least one character. How do they start out, what propels them to change, where do they end up. Then, try to write a story to make the arc happen. You can also develop multiple story lines that propel the arcs of different characters.

I've read famous authors fall into 2 categories - the "gushers" who do what ace recommends - put any sort of crap down, it doesn't matter, just get the basic story out and then rewrite, rewrite, rewrite and "bleeders" who feel the need to correct and edit as they go along. The French novelist Flaubert was one of the latter. It took him days to write 2 pages because he'd stare at the paper in front of him for hours trying to think of exactly le mot juste. That seemed to work for him, but I suspect more writers follow ace's method.

If you are going to can, your best source is the Ball Blue Book of canning. Follow the instructions.
In fact, write the instructions down on a sheet of paper and check they are right and follow those instructions.
1) they were set out to be correct and healthy because dead consumers don't buy more lids and jars
2) they have been updated for 80 years
3) If you knew what sort of people work in a commercial vegetable cannery you would never be concerned that it is too technical
A Presto canner that can take quarts is about $100 on sale, and you can probably do better than that.
You really want an All American canner, but that is some serious coin to start with.

With Scrivener can re-arrange scenes on the fly when you realize that bit needed to happen then and not right now. Also can try to sketch out your characters. Toss in research or even links with it, the Alexandria story has probably ten thousand words cribbed from a 1913 Britannica as research material.

I was already painting everyday. I had a break when I was stuck in that Italian hospital without paints, but, I started back as soon as I got paint and paper.
I joined a singles group that meets twice a month.
Through the singles group, I decided to join the Elks. Who knew they admitted women as full members? They have regular dances and dance lessons, both of which I use.

Berlitz driving language CDs come with a little book but you can drive around and practice. The short sing-song recaps are catchy and easy to remember.
Hopefully between activating different parts of my brain with language learning and brushing my teeth left handed I'll stave off memory loss. Unlike something I did today...

Another medical issue might be B12 deficiency. My MIL thought she was developing Alzheimer's but after the B12 treatment she's totally fine.

Look into the quality of your sleep. Sleep is extremely important to mental functioning. There are tests you can take to make sure you don't have a sleep disorder. Even if you are getting the right number of hours, there may still be a problem.

A moron NaNoWriMo group sounds like a great idea, actually.
I've done NaNo a few times, both on my own and with groups. But the groups have always just been random folks. A group of fellow morons might be good for moral encouragement. One problem I foresee, though, is that THIS November starts off with a pretty consequential event that might make it hard to focus for the rest of the month...
I know what ace means about the white-hot-intensity thing, because that's exactly how my most successful works have always come together: Grind through the first draft, ignoring your internal editor, then go back and fix everything. (The "fixing everything" part is usually pretty fun, because I always discover cool stuff buried under all the shit that I wasn't even conscious of during the initial creative process: "Hey, that's pretty cool. How did I do that? I don't remember doing that.") I just have difficulty keeping the momentum up long enough to finish a novel.
I might have to check out Scrivener, since my editing process usually involves moving around large chunks of stuff, reading it, then moving it around some more. Sometimes the final order is so completely different that the final product barely resembles the first draft.

642 627 if anyone's doing language, children's books and easy readers are really good things to pick up from the library or buy. It is one thing do a lesson; it's another thing to read a children's story (with pictures). Yes, it's a dumb children's story, but that's not the point; the point is that you are actively engaged in figuring out words yourself, rather than learning vocab lists.
It makes it into a game like a crossword and increases the fun factor.
