Music trivia: Harrison wrote "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" for The White Album and "Here Comes the Sun" for Abbey Road

He later composed "sequels" for both songs - "This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying)" for his 1975 solo album Extra Texture and "Here Comes the Moon" for 1979s George Harrison.

I'd have to disagree with you about the individual success of each one. I'd say George came into his own as a songwriter and was putting out better work. Of course, cancer cut that short and Paul is still going, so has a larger catalog.

yeah, well ... globalists do well with ZIRP and QE, and Yellin saying the fed should consider diversifying into other assets. $4T in QE to transition our economy into a DC/NY centrist controlled WallStreet juggernaut.

Responsible big "players" condemned the big bailouts, but Wall Streeters leveraged 300:1 gained control ... Too big to Fail, Too big to Jail. That has become real policy ... none of the biggest crooks pay ... (except Madoff, who broke even their codes, and Martha Stewart).

No wonder they want criminal Hillary in control. But the low info voter watching their pension funds and 401ks don't understand the house of cards built, starting long ago. But how they managed to double the markets with this level of manipulation since TARP is incredible.

The "Save the World" plan is that of the global government types, willing to sacrifice US. America First will set things back in order ... or at least it is the last stand against the oligarchs that will rally around the Clinton Crime Family.

257 Anthony Weiner is some kind of nut: a once-powerful man who threw away everything because he couldn't stop sexting with strangers, some of them teenagers. Professionals can try to diagnose what, exactly, is wrong with him. But I think the real point is this: until recently, Weiner was a powerful member of the political class. Even in disgrace, he retained a certain amount of clout because his wife was Hillary Clinton's top confidante.

Weiner illustrates, in a particularly noxious way, a basic fact: the political class is no better than the rest of us. If you watch YouTube videos of Weiner when he was in Congress, what is most striking is the pose of moral superiority he adopted when excoriating Republicans. It was almost Biblical.

But Weiner's pose was a fraud. The political class is not superior to the rest of us, morally or intellectually. Their pretensions are bogus. Therefore, we should give them less money and less power over our lives. This conclusion is fundamental to traditional conservatism ...

Whatever else anyone thinks of the Black Lives Matter movement, I believe that the important thing to remember is that the entire movement was built in lies about events that DID NOT HAPPEN, exaggerations about what did happen, and gross misrepresentations about why some of the events that did happen, happened.

When people finally pull their heads out of their asses and recognize this, by rights, this bullshit movement, that is making things worse - that is causing the deaths of yet more black lives - should collapse.

We'll see.

but ain't it funny how from one side we hear that it's wrong to 'fat shame' and from the other side of the same side we hear that we need to fight obesity, starting by making kids in school go hungry by making them eat 'healthy' while a certain First Lady is probably yelling at her hubby to leave her those last three slices of pie.

I would bet the farm she believes the police need to be more reserved and allow themselves to be shot rather than cause a riot like this. Because liberals think that being just a little nicer to people is all we need to do.

There actually is solid evidence that today's music (especially pop) is terrible. Most of the pop songs that top the charts are written by 4 people and the reading comprehension level of today's pop songs are at a 3rd or 4th grade level. **shrugs**

I love the Beatles, but I'll be the first to admit that a lot of their stuff - early and late - was junk ("Mr. Moonlight," anyone? Or "Doctor Robert?" Or practically anything off The White Album?). The problem with the Beatles is that they were the first. "Beatlemania" as well as the retrospective looks of critics and fans who can't get over the 1960s as being the pinnacle of Western civilization has contributed to the, yes, I'll agree, "overrated-ness" of the band.

Plus, they dragged along every bit of Brit flotsam and jetsam in their wake, like the Pretty Things and Herman's Hermits.

Saw a brief video clip of last night this morning on CNN of purportedly the brother of the guy shot in Charlotte, wandering around the riot, and screaming at the camera that all white people were devils, that all white cops were devils.

CNN crew didn't have the guts to tell him that the officer who shot his brother was black.

Then another black woman screaming at the cameras when she was asked why she was in the middle of this riot, putting herself in danger, said that she could be at work, she could be in her car, she could be at the store, and the PO lice will shoot her. That the PO lice had just shot a protester in the street. (no, one of your fellow protesters shot the dude)

All of these riots are based on lies, rumors, and false narratives.

361 Music these days is homogenous, that's the problem. You hear something (and I know these aren't even "current" bands) and it sounds OK but you don't know if it's Bush or Coldplay or those other bands I can't keep straight.

If there was a Who song that I'd never heard, I recognized it as a Who song instantly. The Rolling Stones have songs in every genre, but each is perfectly recognizable as a Stones song.

The problem with current music isn't that it's bad, it's that it's undifferentiated mush.

At the radio station I work at (a "classic hits" format), we're slowly adding in some songs from the early 1990s. When the format was introduced here almost 15 years ago, it was mostly 60s and 70s music with a little bit from the 1980s. Now the 80s are the bulk of the library, with just a handful of late 60s songs.

I could explain the reasons why, but it's long and boring.

Also..there, occasionally, good songs popping up even today, though you might not find them on the radio.

Ringo was Ringo. I'd have to disagree with you about the individual success of each one. I'd say George came into his own as a songwriter and was putting out better work. Of course, cancer cut that short and Paul is still going, so has a larger catalog.

Keep in mind what I said; this was the story going around back when the Beatles broke up in 1970. In the years since there have been more tales, rumors, stories, you name it, spread around about the Beatles than Carter has little liver pills.

To be sure, Lennon and Harrison had their share of success through the 1970s, but McCartney was far and away the most successful, in terms of hit songs, albums and the like ("Paul McCartney and Wings", and all that). No one can say what Lennon might have done had he lived, but all of them were pretty well done, career-wise, by the 1980s. Sure, McCartney and Harrison were still working after that, but neither of them had the success they enjoyed during the '70s.

I can agree with that. I spent a hour or so listening to an online "light contemporary" station and it's obvious that one style seems to be overwhelming today...a mid-tempo, electronic dance-like theme. They all sound the same after a bit. The only contemporary songs that I immediately recognized were those of Adele, because of that voice.

That's the way the music industry goes...it latches on to what's hot, turns it into a trend, then runs it into the ground until the next big thing.

Harrison finally surfaced as a good player and singer on the White Album and Abbey Road. Before then, the Beatles had a lot of problems with him working out solos and reworking his songs to make them better.

Paul and even John played lead guitar on many songs because Harrison wasn't up to the task. Harrison was particularly unhappy that Martin asked Paul to play lead on his own song, Taxman. McCartney did the solo in a single take.

I agree that Martin and the rest could have been more patient with Harrison, but by 1964, Lennon and McCartney were cranking out hits with little effort while Harrison was still struggling.

Blacks hate this policy. Backing it is a huge own goal.

Posted by: joncelli,"

A few very vocal black grievance types scream about it ... probably because it was so effective. But evidence seems to show it was VERY effective, and blacks in those neighborhoods liked having their kids much safer.

Stop, Question, Frisk ... lower level than probable cause which can be used for arrest. More constitutional than the broad level of gun control many cities/states have. They don't take guns from people legally carrying them, but something has to be done when gangs are running the streets ... or at least that is a better option than Hillary's "we must make it harder for law abiding citizens to have guns" approach.

Many blacks testified against "hands up don't shoot" Brown but stayed out of the news. imo a majority in those communities want more police, but the dumbest and most criminal among them scream loudest and riot and loot. They make the news.

Even Farrakhan is for Trump ... not sure how that works, but they may understand their communities are not well served by the "let them riot" approach of Baltimore or Ferguson. Strange days indeed.

492 I wanted to make this comment on the ONT, but I go to bed early! regarding the Jason Fung reference. Not sure WeirdDave is following what he is advocating... Dr Fung is specifically targeting metabolic diseases... which he argues is not best treated with medications first. He is not stating that pharmaceuticals are not needed and that his eating plan is the solution to all ills, (especially HIV!)
Also, he IS marketing his ideas/plan.. he is on social media, speaking at conferences, published a book, another on the way. However, what he is advocating is ... NOTHING! In general, eating nothing for a long period of time daily. U can't make too much money selling the idea of nothing.
Additionally, everything I've heard him say is directed at government standards being wrong and that there is no research that supports the standards (low fat), and the research actually shows this to be the worst approach. He is arguing that the actual problem, Insulin levels (ultimate cause) stems from the way we are eating .. all day, and the foods recommended... low fat. The government focus however is on the proximal cause: blood sugar levels. I also get the vibe he is basically saying the bureaucracy is supporting this incorrect approach to justify it's existence (American Diabetic Assn). By extension, drug companies who develop meds to aid in the control of blood sugar are not necessarily the "bad guys" as they are providing a solution to a problem. And in my experience in the medical world, there will always be people who are non-compliant and therefore there will always be a need for a pharmaceutical approach.

494 No one can say what Lennon might have done had he lived, but all of them were pretty well done, career-wise, by the 1980s. Sure, McCartney and Harrison were still working after that, but neither of them had the success they enjoyed during the '70s.

Posted by: The Oort Cloud - Deplorable Source of all SMODs at September 22, 2016 11

The knock on McCartney was that he was working solo and had no "Lennon" to push him, but that theory was blown out of the water when he teamed up with Elvis Costello for "Veronica" and proved he simply wasn't up to the task of writing more than silly love songs.

AFAIC, Harrison's last gasp was 1979s George Harrison, which is a very mellow, laid-back album. Even his "comeback" album produced by Jeff Lynne, Cloud Nine was pretty lousy.

And until Ringo cleaned up his act and started the All-Starr band, his solo albums stunk so much that he released at least one - Old Wave that wasn't even released in the US because of its lack of worth.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at September 22, 2016 11:38 AM (X6fMO)

495 I believe it's true. Harrison also had several songs that were on the charts when McCartney did not. George Martin gave an interview in which he said that he regretted not using George more as a singer. songwriter when he was with the Beatles, as he clearly had more talent than Martin thought. I think that;s one reason George wanted out.

Besides, Harrison deserves at least a hat tip for Layla.
