They haven't done it since the '30s, adopting this "statutory" contempt and civil contempt, which requires the executive and/or the judiciary to get involved. That's all they do nowadays and pretend that's all they can do.
They are too chicken, too girly-men, to exercise the "inherent contempt" powers the courts have ruled they have.
Here's the way it would work. FBI tells them to go fuck themselves, they ain't turning over the documents. The House then passes a full inherent contempt resolution finding Comey and whoever else in contempt of the House.
It passes. The Speaker then directs the House Sergeant-at-Arms to go out and arrest Comey and whoever else. They bring them to the Capitol, and throw them in some pokey they make or wherever they decide.
The courts have ruled this can only be done over one session of Congress. If Comey and his buddies sat it out, under House jail, until the next Congress, they'd have to be released. But the next House could re-pass an inherent contempt resolution and arrest them again.
Again, the House and the Senate have this power. It applies to contempt, refusing to comply with a valid Congressional subpeona and all that.
Congress cannot execute the laws, meaning it can't arrest somebody for violating law, but it can arrest someone for interfering with it's proper legislative power.

I know it's crazy, and I don't think Trump will be a "conservative firebrand", but he's one of the few people that could talk conservative during the primaries and then more believably tack to the middle as the general approached. That was my whole point. Congress has "inherent contempt" powers. The Supreme court has said so. But this is different from the executive power I was describing. I was making a distinction between these two things.
Congress can jail someone for contempt, which includes refusing a subpeona. But they're too chicken to actually use this power.

I don't believe it. The evidence just does not speak in favor of this claim. About 90% of the time, Congress just defers to the executive branch. And this is a bipartisan deferral. Look at the D Congress under Reagan, they basically gave him what he wanted. Look at the R Congress under Clinton, except for a brief time from 1995-1996 when Newt was the honey badger, they just gave Clinton what he wanted. Look at the R Congress under Bush, they certainly agreed to everything he wanted. Even when the D's took back control of Congress in 2006, did they "end Bush's war" as they claimed? Umm, no, they didn't. They gave Bush what he wanted, even though he was supposedly some fascist Nazi jerk to them. And we know how Congress has acted ever since 2008.
The will just isn't there in Congress to stand up for a fight to the executive branch. There is no 1994 Newt on the horizon. Congress is going to accede to whatever the executive branch does.

My dad has one, and he rarely uses it during warm months. He will in the winter though. The cold weather makes the muscles on the side of his body affected by his stoke draw up, and it causes him a great deal of pain. Thank goodness he lives in the region of the country that has hot and not as hot as seasons.

Look, I'll be real honest. They are both destructive to the individual. Even the "Flight 93 Election" article author says as much, with regards to Trump, and he is one of Trump's biggest boosters. He claims we have "too much" individualism, and the reason to vote for Trump is for more "national unity", which is just a polite way of saying more collectivism.

That came to my mind a few days ago. Someone wrote that one reason why it was a good idea to impeach IRS goon, Koskinen, even though he will be out of office in 2 months, is that it would disqualify him from holding office in the future.
Is that true? Hastings is elected instead of appointed, so maybe that makes the difference. I was too lazy to research the point. But, if Koskinen would be constitutionally disqualified from holding federal office after impeachment, why not Hastings?

My daughters, both of them, are thinking about voting for Trump, which threw me for a fucking loop, since the youngest stated a few months ago that if Trump was elected she was going to flee to Mexico.

The penalties resulting from impeachment and conviction CAN include being barred from holding a federal office in the future, but it's not automatic. With Hastings, it wasn't (perhaps because he was acquitted in the external criminal trial).

Which suggests that the real problem really isn't specific to Republican lack of spine (although that is a problem too), the real problem is more fundamental than that about separations of powers in general. Which was my point all along.
Briefly, I don't think Congress has the functional ability to resist the executive branch in any substantive way, regardless of which party controls what.

Reagan and the Dems dickered. A compromise was reached. Reagan got his tax cuts and increased military spending. But, domestics spending, instead of being cut, continued to grow. They put the whole thing on the credit card.
That is the way it usually works when the opposition has enough power to stop the President. They horse trade and the opposition, while not carrying the day, will at least get something.
It no longer works that way. The GOP has refused to fight Obama. They have decided on a tactic of preemptive surrender. Their killer strategy is to let Obama win and then use his win against him in the next election.

If chemjeff understood that the Vichy Republicans in Congress hate Trump as much as he does then he would understand why there's little chance of Congress letting Trump get away with anything. This Congress (and likely the next) would love to impeach Trump, throw him out, criminally prosecute and banish him ... just because they hate his guts so much. And there's no doubt that chemjeff understands that motivation and feeling better than pretty much anyone.
