NFL, Which Apparently Has No Power to Stop National Anthem Protests, Threatens Titans Linebacker Away From Wearing His Patriotic, "Never Forget" 9/11 Cleats
Well these players have a right to express themselves -- so long as it pushes the Social Justice Warrior line.
If it pushes any other line -- like Dallas' proposed sticker to show solidarity with the assassinated cops -- well, that's another story altogether. A couple of police union officials said they'd pay the player's fine if he wore the cleats and the NFL fined him:“We want him to wear the cleats and we’ll pay the fine. He [Williamson] was absolutely doing a great thing and the NFL is threatening with a fine? When is Godell going to recognize what his fan base is? “Here’s a player honoring those who died on 9/11 with a pair of cleats that he had made up himself — it’s not like he’s kneeling during the national anthem or anything,” Colligan said, a reference to the controversial decision by San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick not to stand during the national anthem.Did the NFL's threat work? Well, that's the silver lining. Williamson wore the cleats.
Titans linebacker Avery Williamson came out of the tunnel wearing his custom patriotic cleats for the season opener against the Vikings on Sunday, the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Williamson originally planned to wear the cleats to honor those who died, changed his mind when an NFL representative called to inform him about a looming fine for violating uniform code, and changed his mind once again Saturday night after The Tennessean's report about the situation went viral. Several of his teammates offered to help pay the fine if he wore the cleats, as did four New York and New Jersey police associations, including the union that represents the police department that patrols the World Trade Center complex.... Williamson is auctioning the cleats to benefit Operation Warrior Wishes, plus offering a meet and greet, two VIP tickets to a Titans home game and an autographed jersey.Well, I suppose the NFL will now execute its threat and fine him. Meanwhile, other players are politicizing the game while the NFL issues supportive statements about their right to do so.

I understand that. When Carlos Williams and Tommy Smith did that in '68 it was genuinely courageous (cost them their post Olympic careers) and it was in a completely different context of race relations.

IIRC, another team moved into the area (can't remember exactly where - possibly Orange County), but I can't remember which team it is. Might have been the Chargers. There were three teams up for the possible move to LA - the two mentioned above, and the Raiders.
As an LA resident, no one's really paying attention afaik. The NFL has been trying to get a team here ever since the Raiders left, but the attitude of the locals has been pretty unenthusiastic. They finally managed to get one in. Personally, I couldn't care less. Fact of the matter is that I'm a Raiders fan (though I don't really watch at all), and I'm just fine with them staying up in Oakland.

According to the reports I have seen, the piggy socks were only worn during practice, on a practice field, so sponsorship deals would not have been affected, so I can see why the NFL ignored that.
And, I can see the distinction being made with the national anthem protests. It isn't an issue with the uniforms, so the league treats those like they are a separate category.
Not that I agree with where they come down with the national anthem protests. These are the employees of the NFL, at NFL games, disrespecting our country. The NFL has the power to punish the protesters, but is making the choice not to do so.
I am not troubled by the NFL's strict uniform policy, but I am vehemently opposed to their condoning the on-the-field behavior of its employees who are showing contempt for America.

It was, but they are abandoning that. I don't think that provided much in the way of any tax savings. A nominal amount, but ultimately, the team owners and the players pay tax on the NFL's "earnings."

Just dropping the anthem entirely is a step. Owners and coaches leaning on the players who turn it into a personal show is another. They have tremendous latitude in terms of fines and play time of players who do things they don't care for.
Most of these "protests" don't make any sense to me. Kneeling during the anthem is what, against it or for it? What if you have a hand over your heart while you kneel? Locking your arms and standing? What the hell does all this even mean? Nothing, because nobody knows and its just grandstanding by guys paid millions of dollars to play just over a dozen games a year. Its extremely distasteful and unlikable in a sport that frankly is driving its fans away a little more each year anyway.
If they were smart rather than hoping to score social justice points for party and clan acceptance, the NFL leaders would squash this right now.

I don't think it's a quota thing. The MLB wants the best athletes because of course they do - just like the NFL would have loved to have landed LeBron. Inner city kids just don't play baseball anymore for the most part, which means more elite athletes that would have been playing baseball are playing basketball and football. It doesn't strike me as a PC thing - it's a 'we want more talent' thing. Of course, in lieu of American blacks playing, the MLB finds different talent pipelines - Latin America, Asia, etc.
Andrew McCutchen (who seems to be an all-around great guy) is a big supporter of those inner-city baseball initiatives. If you're an MLB fan, you want more guys like McCutchen in the sport - not because they're black, but because they're exciting as hell to watch.

The only caveat is that there's a higher chance you'll never make it to the Big Show, whereas most NFL draft picks at least get to sniff some playing time. Yeah, there are MLB pitchers who are still playing and are effective at age 40. When a football player like Favre wants to play at age 40 it's a joke.
Pitchers have to worry about their arms and get Tommy Johns surgery to extend their careers. Football players have to worry about concussions and broken bones.
The salaries of the best mlb players are far more lucrative than the salaries of the best NFL players (although football players get better endorsement deals).
It's smarter for a 2 sport athlete to opt for baseball rather than football, but most of these guys are not smart.

That's true, but you can always declare for both drafts. Plenty of guys get drafted by both an NFL team and an MLB team - heck, Dave Winfield was drafted by 4 teams (ABA, NBA, NFL and MLB). If you're a 43rd round MLB pick, yeah, you might want to stick with football. But if you're a 1st or 2nd round pick, I'd pick baseball - you just need to make the Show and make it through your option/arbitration years, and then you'll get a nice fat guaranteed money contract. And your arbitration money won't be peanuts, either.

Yep. As I noted above there are a number of guys who have been drafted by multiple leagues. These guys are elite athletes so I guess its not all that surprising they'd be good at more than one sport.
Oh and Tom Brady, who I grudgingly note is one of the top 2 or 3 QBs in the league, is 39. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos when he graduated from high school. He's done ok.

Ainge obviously made the right choice to quit baseball for basketball. The circumstances of Jordan's minor league baseball tenure are...let's just say cloudy. Bo Jackson was a once-in-a-generation athlete (like Deion Sanders and Brian Jordan), able to do both at a high level. Tebow refused to swallow his pride and hone his QB craft in the AFL or CFL, so he's trying a different sport - we'll see if it works for him, but history is against him.
Mark Hendrickson also pulled off the rare NBA/MLB combo like Ainge, though he was the reverse - decent in the MLB, just a warm body in the NBA.

I'm an Ace fan, but I sure don't understand this Twitter obsession.
If he spent the same amount of time crafting a great take down article against the #NeverTrump crowd instead of fucking around with these tweets, it would make him famous.
These are incredible times. The positions and arguments a right wing writer takes now will determine his or her future after the election. Everything will be rearranged and a new order of intellectuals will come of age based on the results in November.
All of this is going to based on their work, but no one is going to go back and review Twitter feeds.
Leave the back alley fights to crumb bums and get to work sculpting masterpieces of literature.

Actually, I think what Ace is doing is worth his time. The NeverTrump fools need to be confronted and made to acknowledge the consequences of their action and defend the logic of it, if they can.
I think they have some respect for Ace in a way they don't for Hannity or Gingrich or Coulter or Ingraham, and therefore they don't just dismiss him with a wave of the hand.

Thorpe existed well before drafts, though. According to wiki, Mickey McCarty (who?) is the only other guy to be drafted by 4 leagues. To be fair, the Vikings drafting Winfield was a lark - it was the 17th round and Winfield hadn't played football since HS, and no one thought he'd actually play in the NFL. But he was such a good athlete that he was worth the one-in-a-million chance that he'd wake up one morning and say 'Yeah, sure, I'll play for the Vikings.'

Think of Dancing With The Stars. When the show started it was a summer replacement, ballroom dancing show with D-listers and some reality tv whores.
Once it became a juggernaut with the middle class they started their usual desensitizing campaign - Chaz Bono, gay football player, etc.
And they have tried but haven't succeeded yet with getting two guys or two girls dancing as a couple all season but they have done a dance with two couples switching partners that was intended to be obviously gay.
Same with American Idol and Miss USA, Miss America
It's all rigged for SJW freaks.

As I understand it there are two aspects to it.
It's true that technically voters vote for a slate of electors who then vote in the electoral college. And the party, as far as party rules are concerned, can change the nominee up to the date of the electoral college. In this case that would require the Democrat National Committee, chaired by Donna Brazile, to pass a resolution selecting a new nominee.
But the second point is that the candidates' names do appear on state ballots. And the Party will want to remove Hillary's name and replace it with Biden's name on the President line. Dozens of states have already certified the state ballots. But here, courts will step in and force the states to re-certify the ballots if the Democrat Party petitions for it. I would bet courts would be perfectly willing to do it at least up to the beginning of the three national debates.

He can call them out by name and site specific wording in linked articles to make his point. Then, he can lay the reasoning out in a way to allow fence sitters to come into the fold or perish along with the idiots who used to be voice of the the right.
What he does now and how he does it will determine his position in the new order.
There are people out there who make a lot of money off of the words other people write. Fucking Gawker brought 130 million for christsake. These people are going to be looking for writers who saw the handwriting on the wall and made the case for Trump while others jerked off at the WiFi kiosk.
Ace needs to pound out more articles like Jonah Goldberg had to reply to the other week. Hard hitting, but with enough class that the readers knew it was Ace and not one of us in the unwashed masses.
