Facebook Heroism And The Decline Of Masculinity --Warden
One of my main problems with social media is that it tends to make me like people far less than if had I only interacted with them in meatspace. And this is because people tend to be less free with their big, dumb, annoying political opinions when they’re face to face with their audience, freeing me to pretend that most people don’t have big, dumb, annoying political opinions lurking behind their otherwise pleasant and reasonable public demeanor.
Last week was a case in point. A twenty-something adult male from my church posted an instructional video that purported to teach women how to protect themselves from rape with the following (paraphrased) commentary:This rape prevention video is 6 minutes long. I have a better idea. Why don’t we instead simply spend 3 seconds on a video that tells men not to rape? God didn’t need long instructional videos for the 10 Commandments. "Thou shall not" is pretty direct. Six women had "liked" this post by the time it came across my feed. I stared at that bit of knee-jerk progressive virtue signaling foolishness for a good minute or more before breaking a personal social media rule and writing what I hoped was a polite correction. But I couldn’t get that post out of my head because the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much there was to unpack. Just who are these men out there don’t understand that rape is wrong? Other than African and Middle Eastern Muslim immigrants, I can’t think of any. Of course rapists know that rape isn’t okay, just as thieves know that stealing isn’t okay, just as murderers know that murder isn't okay. There is literally no other serious crime in America where we take the position that the criminals just need to be “taught” that their misdeeds are wrong. And in no other case would a progressive be outraged at an instructional video that teaches people how to avoid victimization. No one angrily asserts that, instead of telling people to lock their car doors at the mall, we just need to teach people to not steal Christmas presents from other shoppers. This would be an insane position to take and everybody knows it. So, what exactly is going on here? Well, the obvious difference between rape and almost every other crime is that it’s one where men are almost always the offenders and women the victim. This distinction provides a convenient cudgel for Cultural Marxists to shame and smear men generally as violent and beastly. (By way of evidence, you will notice that the very similar crime of child rape is handled completely differently because it is often a male on male crime, which invokes homosexuality, a protected and privileged class among progressives.) But that’s not what this young fella was thinking when he made the post—that’s the evil, insidious nature of Cultural Marxism—he was not, in fact, thinking at all. Rather, he was subconsciously angling for approval by obliquely smearing other men. The implicit message of that post was, “I am against rape,” but the subtext was, “Other men are NOT against rape and I should be praised for this because I am uniquely opposed to rape in ways that other men are not. Remember, the message was, "Teach MEN not to rape." Not some men. Not rapists... MEN. Teach men not to rape. This is a social media trend that I’ve noticed among progressives. They position themselves as fighters against injustice, but only take public stands against things that earn them approval and praise. One way to really amp up your cred is to call out the group to which you belong, thereby absolving yourself of the your group's collective sin in doing so. It’s a particularly dishonest, cowardly and backstabby way to operate. Note, too, that helping women protect themselves from rape is not even a secondary concern. Rather, the very idea of it is a source of anger. Pragmatic, real-world solutions are replaced with the strange and childish fantasy that less enlightened men just need a good scolding about all their rapeyness and all will be well. Do progressives even believe this? Again, I don't think they've even considered it long enough to believe or not believe. At this point, they're just reacting to stimuli like a single cell organism reacting to a low voltage electrical shock. They've been swimming in Cultural Marxism for so long that they've lost their ability to think. The most appalling part of his post wasn’t that it was so devoid of logic and common sense; it was that a grown man sought and received praise for the almost universally agreed upon position of… being against rape. Bold stance, bro. And truly outside the box. You've got us all thinking about stuff in, like, a whole new way. This is where we are. Seeking and receiving praise for "taking a stand" against what is a universally despised crime. What does that say about our standards? I have a theory on this that as we become softer, weaker and more technologically dependent, men—who are genetically hardwired to hunters, risk takers, and physical protectors—will increasingly rely upon this kind of limp-wristed virtue signaling in absence of any sort of real masculine achievement. Heroism used to be defined by deeds. Today it is defined by words—ones everybody in your tribe agrees with, and directed at phantom menaces who cannot do you actual harm. It's safe. It's easy. And it's fake, just like everything else about the progressive left. I find it to be incredibly sad, this state we're in. And deep down, I think that progressives also know how shallow and full of bullshit they are. Ace recently had a post about the NFL that caused a bit of ruckus in the comment section. And while I loosely agree with him that watching a bunch of grown men compete from the comfort of your couch is not a truly masculine endeavor, I do think that football is an important aspect of our rapidly diminishing warrior culture and to see it violated and diminished by a bunch of bed-wetting SJWs is a net loss to the masculine spirit. Football is a fantastic game for teaching boys toughness, teamwork and discipline. The fact that it is in decline while less violent sports like soccer ascend in America is no accident. I started my 10 year old in tackle football this fall, not in spite of the football’s propensity to bang kids up, but partially because of it. And each time my wife freaks out from the stands because her boy is limping off the field, I nod my head and think, “Good.” I do not think this because I’m a sadist, but because I think that boys who learn to play through pain, to meet difficult challenges, and to get up after being knocked on their asses over and over again are more apt to become men who display genuine bravery and heroism rather than the phony take-a-stand-that-everyone-already-agrees-with Facebook kind. And God knows we need more of that.

If he wrote "I totally disapprove of rape" that would be lame. Even a rapist isn't going to go around saying "rape is awesome." So instead he re-purposed what (I assume) was a helpful video about how to prevent rape as a jumping off point to talk about HIMSELF, and what a great guy he is for uniquely seeing that rape is bad. His proposal (lectures for rapists) is lame but it's the solidarity that counts with this crowd. If you attack head on with "not all guys rape" that will bring on the endless the poorly-sourced anecdotal wailings. The best way to counter this is to point out that just telling rapists not to rape is not a viable solution to a very real problem and that maybe he should watch the video and stop mansplaining.

Probably could be tackled from both sides. Women do need to know how to protect themselves. Rape has been around since the beginning of time, and will continue on.

As far as football, it's a game. It has strategy. Stats. It's a puzzle and fun for many. Not just the big fat-necked men hitting each other, and the cheerleaders. Like all sports. It helps if you've played or understand the rules in general, to get the flavor of the sport and its attraction.
Not only are you teaching your kid what you think by playing football, but also team work and playing and working with others. Team sports are something no one can get unless they do it. To be part of a team and have to BE part of the TEAM. (Something Ronaldo doesn't get and why he's hated by so many.)

If your son, Ace, is really being taught those lessons, and by that I mean you talking to him about it, and your son is thrilled to be on the team, then, yes, football teaches that.
If it teaches him that he's going to be bullied by tougher kids and the adults don't give a shit about him, well, that'll be a lesson to him as well.
Frankly, you could teach him toughness, teamwork, and discipline by working with him on projects, taking him on hikes, and modeling those behaviors for him.
Personally, my experiences with youth football were not as you dreamed. Frankly, it was terrible, and I deeply regret playing.

This gives you an idea of what's happening in some places - it's Calais, but one can imagine it's happening elsewhere based on various reports of European police advising women to stay in at night, dye their blonde hair, wear sneakers, etc.

It's a Browning. I haven't tried it out yet, basically going to use it for going to the range at the moment (though I may get a LTC here in TX). I did not play football in high school. Or middle school. I quit after fifth grade. Because I thought knocking around while people cheered or booed because you wore the proper uniform was stupid.
After that I worked on driveway crews and basement crews and framing crews and painting crews and got beat up and built up about the same way. At least - that's how it seemed in boot camp.
At the end of those days - nobody cheered. Mom and Dad didn't come out to see me brush finish a slab. But I got money for it. And I think I learned more real shit on those jobs than any of those fucks learned on a ball field.

I went to college with a guy who routinely threw keg parties and would let girls who were too drunk sleep in his bed and spend the night. He and his friends undressed them while they were unconscious and took pics of them and wrote crude words and pictures on their bodies. He had an entire album of pics, including some of my friends. Yeah, you don't want to put money down on that bet. Only the .22 LR has killed more men than the .38 special in non-military action.
And it's accurate as all hell, too.

We are so used to chivalrous behavior as the standard code of conduct in the modern world -- holding the door open for women, giving up you seat for hem on the train, laying your cape over a mud puddle, asking for her hand in marriage rather than demanding it, waging total war on invading rival nations and wiping them out in order to protect your women, hunting down and killing anyone who rapes a female family member, etc., that we forget that it wasn't always like this.
But thanks to feminism and the modern SJW movement, that is all going away now.

Are you a vegetarian? The cows that get turned into your steak have to get their grass from somewhere. And if they don't control the wild horse/antelope/ buffalo/etc populations, those animals start starving to death. Much better than adopt them out or humanely euthanize them than watch them turn into living skeletons. The BLM has stocking rates for most of the western US, which dictates how many animals of each type can be supported by that section of land. They don't just go around killing the pretty ponies because they like it.

My point is that I have NEVER heard someone use "dicking" for "screwing" (or any the 8,325 other known and acceptable synonyms). People say "dicking around" for "wasting time" and stuff like that. Powell is speaking in a weirdly non-American fashion, as Barky is wont to do.

There are as many ways to be...lets say....artful, in the use of profanity in the military as there are stars in the sky.
Especially if you were in a combat arms branch.
But....the use of that term seemed to occur with NCOs of a certain age - mostly 1970s era vintage - when I first came in (1985).
I haven't heard it in years, but when I read it this morning, before I knew it was Powell, I thought to myself, "Gee, it sounds like Sergeant First Class McCluskey has come back from the grave...or my nightmares....or both."

Blame Eleanor of Aquitaine. Courtly love became really popular under her watch, and during the time afterwards (Marie de France, etc.). But chivalry encompassed a lot of concepts, not only the courtly love idea, which, you are correct, placed high-ranking women on a pedestal- in an idealistic sense, not in a practical one. Common women were subjected to just as much nonsense from high-ranking assholes as they ever were. Hey, maybe Bill Clinton is a transplant from the 1300s!

It is good for women to know how to defend themselves, since they are weaker. Simple as that. Every woman should think about what might happen if they are raped. Will they resist? Will they not resist? It is a very personal choice that a woman has to make.
Does that make every woman a victim? No. Teaching women to defend themselves makes them more self assured.
And does that make every man a potential rapist? No. The majority of men are decent people who like helping women and would never hurt them.
Would it be best to stop men from raping? Sure.
Is that realistic. No.
Just like we can't stop people from stealing, killing and speeding.
/and that's why I don't participate in Facebook.

If you're not on the "women's side" (of whatever they need you on), you don't really think rape is bad. This is where we are with "racism" as well. They're allowing themselves to polarize politics simply because somebody said "Eeny-meeny". Because you can't say "eeny meeny" without being okay with "catching a n----r by the toe", and that means that you can't say "eeny meeny" without suggesting that an entire race be subjugated by a political system designed to subjugate an entire race.
This is the short-hand polarization that they have allowed themselves. And then they want to claim that you're divisive, by being racist, by "siding" with those people who say "eeny meeny" by arguing that maybe, without intention (remember that?) "eeny meeny" is more thought of as a way to pick something without thinking, then as a racial manifesto, and should not be equated as political preference for a system that subjugates one race to another.
In short, it allows liberals to think really bad thoughts about people who simply will not fall in line with the political shibboleths that require.
A guy I know from high school, who told me he doesn't give girls a chance to say "no", was also one of the biggest drug dealers at school. He had also been on probation for years after several arrests for B&Es, and had been the juvenile facility at least once for arrests under probation.
Perhaps somebody should have told him that selling drugs was not okay, or that breaking and entering other people's property was okay. But something tells me he didn't check with adults about what was right or wrong.
