"Commander in Chief Forum" Thread

It's on MSNBC, and it's hosted by Matt Lauer, so you know it's straight down that sweet sweet middle.

Vid: Hillary took some fire from a serviceman who stated he'd have been court martialed and imprisoned if he handled classified information like Granny BleachBit.

This x1,000,000,000.

Those oil fields were discovered and developed by British and American oil companies. The Arabs had been living on top of them for 1000 years and never did jack shit about it. It's OUR oil, and it always has been.

That oil gave the Arab potentates unimaginable wealth, which they then used to fund Muslim terrorism worldwide and buy off our politicians, who then gave them free rein to build mosques in our countries.

I hate this line. Lots of stuff worked for McCain and Romney and Dole and every other Republican nominee who won the primary and then lost the general.

447 "Also, Flynn thinks McChrystal is great."

McChrystal is the spiritual heir of the advocates of "Vietnamization".

Who said that with determination and lots of money, and U.S. advisors and U.S. airpower, South Vietnam could be built up to where it would be able to hold off Hanoi's offenses indefinitely.

Well, they were right about that. Except that it wasn't a strategy to win by defeating the enemy. It was a strategy to instead postpone losing.

And that model did in fact postpone losing. For several years. Right up until the money, advisors and airpower necessary to the scheme were suddenly cut off by Democrats in the States. At which point South Vietnam folded up like a cardboard box in monsoon season. Because the enemy hadn't been defeated and was waiting patiently for just such an opportunity.

What McChrystal was pushing as a theater commander was essentially the very same gimmick of the postponement of losing. It won't work any better in southwest Asia than it did in southeast Asia.

Did you read Mark Krikorian's recent article at NRO? I think you would appreciate it. It was ostensibly about Schlafly but really it was about the modern GOP electorate.

http://tinyurl.com/zvvjqkq
In his words:
"Many, perhaps most people who vote Republican don't do so because
of tax rates or trade agreements or Kelo or Ex-Im or even abortion or
guns. Rather, it is nationalism - understood as the political expression
of the emotion of patriotism - that's the substructure of support for
the Right, the policy specifics about taxes and the rest being the
superstructure. Voters who don't particularly care about the
three-legged stool of conservatism voted Republican anyway because they
were one-nation patriots and the Democrats had become the party of
post-Americanism and balkanization. This is the real source of the
revulsion at Obama - it's not his father's race and it's not really even
Obamacare and the other outrages of this administration, outrageous as
they are. It's his post-Americanism, which combines his
citizen-of-the-world pretensions with an aggressive campaign of
deconstructing the American people."

I've noticed that the Trump campaign is not as weasely and evasive as other political campaigns, be it Dem or Rep. With his new advisors, you see it becoming more typical. It's ironic that this gives so many CONFIDENCE, that he SOUNDS like a typical politician, who dodges questions and every word said is selected to have mean different things to different people.

In other words, everybody complained bitterly, and he dropped in the polls, back when he would actually ANSWER a question that was asked of him, instead of rambling talking points. The media twisted every word around, and somehow Trump was the bad guy. It's a shame, because he used to connect with people that way.

Trump certainly gets carried away with his various claims, but he's basically on the level with his main themes.

That's BS. My opinion stands on its own. It doesn't matter where I got it from. If you disagree with me then you can argue your points but to try and claim that my opinion is, by default, unworthy of consideration because I haven't served is just ridiculous.

You like the ROE. You've said that. Good. We are, as I have said, in total disagreement over this. You think that they've been some super-secret thing that no one has been privy to unless they've been in the field? Wrong.

And, further, a good part of the fight we've been engaged in has to do with understanding the cultures we're fighting - understanding what they would view as defeat and what would even allow them to surrender - and the great bulk of our general staff (and certainly everyone in Washington) don't have a friggin clue about that. And that is easy to tell by how they have all been trying to go about things. Either people understand arab/muslim cultures or they don't, and most of our political and military leaders certainly don't. If you like our ROE then I have little faith that you understand much about their cultures, either.

The soldier on the line risks his life to do his duty.

Officers not only have that risk of duty, but they must also risk their careers to do their duty. This risk becomes greater as their ranks and responsibilities become greater.

A general that will not tell off a President, and then turn in his stars and go the press when NECESSARY has benefited from all the perks of his rank w/o paying the price.

2 examples off the top of my head:
all the environmental bullshit that has eaten up military budget that should have been used for training

ignoring combat efficiency for the sake of diversity.

every general that has signed off on those two items needs to to be court-matialed for dereliction of duty

Obama is the most intensely political president we've ever had. His politics have infected all parts of the government bureaucracy to a much greater degree than any of his predecessors. And you somehow think that the military, one of the biggest budget items and an area Obama hasn't been shy about saying he wants to target for reduction, is somehow not political? That's absurd.

I agree that it is not cut and dry at the field grade and lower ranks, who can be court-martialed for not toeing an insane line (even though they usually have the option to resign their commission).

At the flag level though? that's where politics meets military policy, and most important for officers who understand duty to make the right decision.

I also understand it's harder for an officer that resigns to make a public appeal when the press is controlled by traitors.

But when it comes down to it, the guy on the line is the guy that gets killed. The officer's duty is to see that the risk of death at the barest minimum needed to defend the country. If he can't handle that responsibility, he has no business under the colors.

Gurganus and MG Sturdevant relieved?

Why was LTG Huntoon relieved?

Why was
BG Roberts relieved?

Why was GEN McKiernan relieved?

675 Well this thread generally went to shit.

Posted by: Tami at September 07, 2016 10:14 PM (Enq6K)

676 >>ou think Obama personally relieves every officer with a star? You realize a BG is rated by a MG and senior rated by a LTG right? You have to hit 3 and 4 star before you're getting personally relieved. Those investigations are for fucking up. Do you think MG Gurganus and MG Sturdevant shouldn't have been relieved?

I don't know how many more times or ways I can say this. The military has always been political and often politically connected. But under Obama it has gone to a whole new level.

There have been fuck ups across the board in the government, including the military, under Obama. He picks and chooses who he wishes to prosecute and absolutely sets the trend and the direction he wants to go and makes it clear that those who don't follow his lead aren't welcome. Have you not noticed this over the last 8 years? Have you been napping? Did you somehow think the military was unique? If so, you were wrong.

>>McChrystal resigned after the Rolling Stone article came out.

No shit. Because of politics. Was that so fucking hard?

Posted by: JackStraw at September 07, 2016 10:15 PM (/tuJf)

677 Why do you not know why the other officers were relieved? Why do you call McChrystal a liar when he resigns? Why is GEN Ham who retired apparently purged? Why does GEN Mattis who retired become "purged"? Who here is invested in a meme? You are, and it is the meme of "purges" and "political hack generals" who nobody can put a name to.

That wasn't a political purge. That was poor judgment. McChrystal resigned.Any responses on why the MGs got relieved for the Bation attack or is that still a "political purge"?
Did the MG who got shitfaced throughout a trip to Russia get "politically purged"?
The COL who put a round through the floor of his office?

I am saying there has been no great purge and I can think of a large number of flag officers who are not political hacks. I can think of a few who are, but they are not as numerous as gets thrown about. And it seems no one can name any of those political hack generals, strangely enough.

Posted by: Banana Splits Guy at September 07, 2016 10:25 PM (7h4Fr)

690 I might add that the troubling thing about these kinds of threads to me is that I think there is a large proportion of posters who would be perfectly fine with "political hack generals" so long as they shared their politics. The military upper echelons is political in the sense of "office politics" or "branch politics" or cliques, but it is not partisanly strident.

Well of course they aren't. But can't you see that promoting this tin foil hat nonsense only undermines the right's case against Obama? The demonstrably verifiably terrible things that Obama has done are *bad enough*. It only makes us all look like paranoid kooks when we run around promoting tinfoil crap, and then by extension, undermines our credibility when we yell about Obama actually doing something horrible.
