5 No school for kid today, so I was looking forward to sleeping in since I've been feeling sleepy all week. My body still hasn't adjusted from my lazy summer schedule.

So I wake up one hour later. Really, body, that's all you wanted, one more hour?

smh

11 From the complaint in Allen v. English:

Plaintiff Yvonne Allen is a devout Christian woman who covers her hair with a headscarf as part of her religious practice. In December 2015, Ms. Allen sought to renew her driver license at the Lee County driver license office, where officials demanded that she remove her head covering to be photographed. When Ms. Allen explained her religious beliefs, the County officials responded with a remarkable claim: They admitted that there was a religious accommodation available for head coverings, but contended that it applied only to Muslims.

Then the ACLU steps in ...

14 TFG just phoned and penned a change in status for Midway from sand spit to "National Monument", so people "one hundred years from now can visit". That's what the idiot actually said. Hopefully someone pointed out it is a desolate island in the middle of the Pacific and hardly worth the effort, except as a naval base.

15 I clicked on something and then clicked on something else, sooooo.......I hope "Sully" is a good film. I don't go to the movies very often. but I like Tom Hanks and the subject is certainly very interesting. I think it's also cool that Clint Eastwood is still directing films and he's what.....86? I was watching a documentary about the "Miracle on the Hudson" and an interview with Sully. He said from years of flying he was trained to remain calm, but knowing what had happened (engines ability blown out) it was the most sickening feeling he ever had in his life.

So I added a youtube embed block filter for now to my ad blocker.

In #NeverTrump news, over at RedState Ben "Weekend Dad" Howe, he of "Halloween Pranks" fame, is trying to raise $30k for a TrumpSux documentary he wants to make called "The Sociopath".

Since Howe's career, as such, is assembling free creative commons clips into little viewed youtube videos, guess where that money is going.. He should have called it, "Ben's late with the child-support check again -- what to do".

I wonder if Captain Sully will have a cameo in the movie, just as Jim Lovell did at the end of Apollo 13.

And I can never think of Tom Hanks without thinking of his Bosom Buddies co-star Peter Scolari. One's a multimillionaire Hollywood star and the other's an answer to a trivia question. I'm glad I'm not Scolari, because I would most likely have hung myself years ago.

The girlfriend is running a 12 mile race tomorrow morning, so I'll be down there cheering. If you've never spectated one of those long races (half marathon/marathon level), they're actually pretty fun to watch. When the racers see and hear people cheering for them, you can visibly see that it helps give them that last bit of energy to finish.

Interesting, isn't it, that the media is willing to print thinly-sourced rumors about distant-past whoring by candidate wife Melania Trump, yet the same media pointedly ignores the abundance of evidence of the recent-past (and present) whoring by candidate Hillary Clinton.

And Hillary's whoring has cost U.S. taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, harmed millions of desperately poor people (just ask the Haitians), and endangered U.S. national security.

So which should be the bigger story?

And frankly, I'm projecting my own emotions off on Scolari. I couldn't deal with Hanks' success, so I don't know how he does, but more power to him.

In business model news, Change.org, the online petition site, laid off 30% of its staff on Thursday affecting roughly 100 employees across all departments.

The move follows news earlier this month that Change.org was in the midst of laying off 58 employees largely focused in business development and recruiting. At least 124 employees in total have been laid off this summer.

Until now, Change.org has been relying on a financially unsuccessful revenue model around sponsored petitions paid for by nonprofits. Change.org announced in late June it was moving to a crowdfunding model where petition signers can donate cash with the company taking a 5% cut.

84 51 The Judicial Watch email release shows the Clinton State Department and the Clinton Foundation acted as one entity, even to the extant of granting Diplomatic passports to Foundation staffers.
___________________________

It's the money part that sickens me. Hillary's State Dept. treated the Haitian earthquake disaster as an ATM for the Clintons.

The U.S. gov't poured $45 million of our money into building a luxury hotel in Haiti (because that's what dirt poor Haitians needed most, right?). The hotel isn't used by Haitians (who can't afford it), but by executives of the Clinton crony-operation who operate the cell phone monopoly in Haiti (also largely funded by U.S. taxpayers -- we paid for the "free" phones given to the Haitians, so they could then be charged for cell phone service provided by the Clinton-crony owned cell phone company, which has a monopoly there.).

Then there is the $10 million State Dept. loan that was fast-tracked for another Clinton donor, Claudio Osorio. He was a securities fraudster who had already driven one company into bankruptcy. Clinton green-lighted his loan app. -- even though he failed to provide an independent financial audit, as gov't regs reguire -- and the loan got approved in just two weeks (the approval process normally takes months to years). Osorio defaulted on the loan, never built any Haitian houses, but did use our taxpayer millions to buy himself a big Miami mansion and a Maserati. (But hey, the Clintons got their kickback, so it's all good. Who cares that the U.S. taxpayers and the Haitians got screwed?)

There is also the Laureate Education quid-pro-quo. Laureate is a Soros-backed scam; it's a for-profit "university" that operates mainly in third-world countries and Latin America, selling diplomas to anybody foolish enough to fork over the cash. Laureate Education paid Bill Clinton over $16 million to function as a non-working figurehead. In exchange, Hillary Clinton steered over $55 million in taxpayer grants to Laureate Education.

Meanwhile, our idiot "representatives" in government continue to pretend that there is no evidence that Hillary Clinton was anything other than a dedicated public servant (with a peculiar need for secrecy) as Secretary of State . . . .

Democrats and Republicans alike seem to think this increasing sentiment is merely a passing adolescent national mood swing. It's amazing to watch, what with GOPe Senators getting ready to push through the Garland nomination, McCarthy getting ready to push the Obama legislative slate through the House and Clinton sometimes emerging from her nap room to collect bribes.

The conditions that gave rise to Robespierre and the Terror were, up until recently, a complete mystery to me but it's all becoming more clear now.

108 In the final NTSB report, the bureaucrats determined that Sullenberger could have gotten the plane back to LaGuardia based on the results of simulations at Airbus.

So, based on the word of the aircraft manufacturer based on controlled tests conducted in simulators where the pilots knew exactly what was going to happen... the NTSB concluded that he may have screwed up.

Posted by: V the K at September 02, 2016 08:42 AM (O7MnT)

109 It was previously related on these very pages that in simulations run after Sully successfully landed the plane on the Hudson, other pilots who knew the scenario in advance were sometimes able to make it back to the airport. In simulations where the pilot had no idea what the scenario was about, none of them made it to the airport.

It seems those few seconds of decisive action taking, because one knew in advance what was going to happen and had gamed out the necessary steps, were very, very precious.

So more than 50% of very skilled pilots did not make it back in. I'm assuming the loading of the airplane's wings with induced drag causing further and quicker descent was the culprit. Probably what was on Sully and Skile's mind that day.

He knew exactly what that airspeed was, brought the plane just over the surface of the water, held it steady and waited.

A bit like the "Gimli Glider" incident but instead of running the tanks dry, the engines didn't like ingesting a flock of birds. For those unfamiliar, the "Gimli Glider" was an Canadian airliner that ran out of fuel due to an Imperial to metric conversion error. Either the pilot or copilot had extensive glider experience and successfully brought his a/c down on an improvised landing area.

Didn't know Sullenberger had glider experience; it explains a lot. Mrs. Cop and I both plan to see the movie.

148 That dude in a dress story deserves a good fisking.

What does 'transgendered woman' mean?

It would mean a dude in a dress, right? So how can a dude in a dress be taking an acting position away from an transgendered woman? Unless you are trying to say that a transgendered woman is a woman pretending to be a man who is pretending to be a woman by looking like a dude in a dress.

I feel like I am drowning in a sea of gender fluid.

150 It was previously related on these very pages that in simulations run after Sully successfully landed the plane on the Hudson, other pilots who knew the scenario in advance were sometimes able to make it back to the airport. In simulations where the pilot had no idea what the scenario was about, none of them made it to the airport.

It seems those few seconds of decisive action taking, because one knew in advance what was going to happen and had gamed out the necessary steps, were very, very precious.

It was actually brought down on the runway of a former Canadian Air Force Base where the pilot had trained when he was in the military.

Thing is, the based had been shutdown years before. On the day the Gimli Glider came in, it was being used for drag racing.

The cars were off the runway because things were wrapping up for the day; but there were two little boys riding their bikes down the runway as the plane came in. It stopped short of hitting them, Thank God.

'Morning, ScoggDog.

I'm not a sports fan, so the personal failings of JoePa don't interest me. But I had made the comment a couple of days ago that too many people abet the SJ warrioring of sports because their time, their friends and - in some cases - their identities are wrapped up in "my team!" cheerleading and they either agree with or do their best to ignore the leftist agenda being pushed.

But as we know, an unopposed agenda soon becomes enshrined tradition and, soon enough, settled law. A clown like Kaepernick could be tossed to the street by Monday if every NFL fan in the country called their cable providers and canceled their Sunday ticket or super sports package and made it quite clear why they were doing it.

If you like sports, if you're a team booster - hell, if you bleed Patriot white and blue, I don't care - then that's fine. But realize at the same time that your support comes with a price, and that price is Kaepernick.

203 Kyle Holsclaw Jr. learned to shoot an AR-15 assault rifle competitively at the age of 16 while attending a clinic run by the U.S. Army.

"It was a fantastic experience," said Holsclaw, an experienced competitive target shooter who said he had never learned to compete with the AR-15 before the seminar he attended in 2014. "I learned a tremendous amount about how to move with the gun."

Holsclaw is among the children, aged 9 to 18, who come to an annual clinic run by the elite U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Georgia. The workshop -- which will be held this year from October 21 to 23 -- focuses on practical shooting, a sport that simulates combat shooting conditions. The Army workshops highlight the growing popularity of assault rifles among civilians. Once reserved for soldiers, assault rifles like those used in the marksmanship clinic have been purchased by millions of private citizens.

As assault rifles have moved from armories to family homes, a subculture of sporting competitions that use these weapons has emerged. The Army clinics train children to compete in the hundreds of contests held around the countrywhere participants wield assault rifles. But critics of practical shooting say the sport encourages violence and should not be taught to children -- especially at a time when recent mass shootings have reignited debate over gun violence.

209 The Bureau of Prisons will decline to renew any expiring contracts with private companies that house federal prisoners, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates announced on Thursday.

"We now have approximately 195,000 inmates in bureau or private contract facilities, down from a high in 2013 of approximately 220,000," she wrote in a blogpost accompanied by a memo to the bureau's acting chief Thomas Kane. "This decline in the prison population means that we can better allocate our resources to ensure that inmates are in the safest facilities and receiving the best rehabilitative services -- services that increase their chances of becoming contributing members of their communities when they return from prison."

Yates linked the action to the Obama administration's two-year-old Smart on Crime initiative for sentencing reforms, but also cited a recent Justice inspector general's report showing that the contract prisons risk inmate and staff health. Private prisons "simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs and resources," she wrote. "They do not save substantially on costs . . . and they do not maintain the level of safety and security."

214 It's that time of the year again ...

Federal agencies could be heading for yet another short-term, stopgap measure to start off the fiscal year in October, as signaled by the Democratic leader in the Senate on Thursday.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters his party would accept a continuing resolution through Christmas, but not into 2017. Such a measure would avoid a government shutdown come Oct. 1 by funding agencies at their current levels for the length of time the CR is in place.

Agencies have required at least some form of a CR every year since 1997. Congress has a long way to go to pass each of the 12 annual appropriations bills, and an increasingly short timeframe to complete them. Before lawmakers went on recess in mid-July, just one of measures had gone through the conference committee process. Even that bill, which set funding for military construction and veterans affairs, failed to clear the Senate.

reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy.

It's right there on page 7 of the indictment. Copy available at WSJ. Not hard to find.

If the writer is merely willing to make terse allusions to 2001 and no mention of Close Encounters of the Third Kind while showing their ignorance on how art and science in the West became such an artificial dueling duality of their preconceptions then why should I bother to watch the movie?

Exactly. The coach was reporting heresay evidence to the police. The university had every right to dismiss him.

Paterno was presented with heresay evidence and reported it up the chain of command, exactly as the employers rules demand.

Don't know why some people refuse to accept that, instead they engage in social justice warrior style virtue signaling about 'what they would have done'.

It's tedious and boring and libelous.

The award winning story that the movie is based on, Ted Chaing's Story of Your Life, is based on a pretty much discredited linguistic theory:

240 ScoggDog from the why the writer gushes over the concept that art and science are two distinct camps seeming to never be able to understand each other I can perceive how shallow their thinking is. Under that kind of mind set the writer proves they are a victim of a version of the Sapir-Whorf concept. For they are saying there is no beauty in a Mandelbrot set of fractals just as there is no science buttressing that stone arch. So I guess that is why they are gushing over Arrival since the story still sees how art and science are as intertwined as a strand of DNA.

Worthless, leftist shills, everyone of them.

Were I advising Trump, I would begin at this moment to track down every contribution those nickelfuckers have made to Scankles or any other Democrat politician and make sure he had those numbers on a note card right at the podium.

Then, when Holt begins with, "why are you so racist, Mr. Trump?" Teh Donald can reply, "Well, first of all, Lester, before I answer your question, let me just congratulate Mrs. Clinton here, since it looks like your $5000 contribution to her foundation has given her the chance to plant loaded, biased nonsense right in your hands to vomit out in front of a national audience.

"So now that we know you're a bought and paid for shill, I don't see any point in pretending you're anything else. Next question."

Of course, were I advising Trump, none of those assholes would be "moderating" debates at all. Where the hell is the Art of the Deal when you need it?

264 So more than 50% of very skilled pilots did not make it back in. I'm assuming the loading of the airplane's wings with induced drag causing further and quicker descent was the culprit. Probably what was on Sully and Skile's mind that day.

Imagine if this was an IFR day with the river being obscured?

Posted by: Citation X Driver at September 02, 2016 09:02 AM (ABJy3)

A great "trainer" plane for this, (both literally and figuratively), is the Grumman Tiger/Cheetah series of airplanes.

Low and slow is their coffin corner, the opposite of your Citation's corner way up there at the upper right of the envelope.

The induced drag~increased angle of attack, feedback cycle of that little plane at speeds within 5kts of the stall, are responsible for more than a few wadded up piles of aluminum somewhere short of various runway thresholds.

Even practicing stalls at +5,000 agl, you can really feel the thing enter into that phase where the increase in AoA, ceases to pay dividends, and begins to extract penalties. Nose down and throttle to the 'wall recovers it of course.

The Grumman is a much more responsive plane to "feel" as a trainer than the usual '152. But, it'll bite, too. That "DO NOT SPIN" placard on the panel? I believe they mean it.

271 A Springer Spaniel is a hunting dog, which means it needs a job, preferably in the field. Work the dog to near exhaustion with fetching exercises, hunting and finding games, long walks at a fast pace, etc. They are high energy and made for outdoor work, not for laying about the house. Dogs are genetically programmed to do certain things. Springer Spaniels are meant to do field work, so you have to set up mock field expeditions and tasks to satisfy their genetic tendencies. Otherwise they will drive you mad.
