Return of the Prodigal Son
Rembrandt van Rijn

This is one of Rembrandt's last works, painted in 1669, just before his death. Clearly his physical talents had diminished, but this painting is evocative in other ways.

Government bureaucracy.

Bush
was a lot of things but he did not "create" DHS. That was a
recommendation from that rigged 9-11 commission. Bush was initially
against it but that asshole Karl Rove talked him into agreeing with to
it. In fact, that asshole Rove was probably responsible for a LOT of the
bad shit Bush did. But the act that created it was passed by a
Republican congress and he failed to veto it.

33 I was in the fine art business for years; and actually sold quite a few Rembrandt etchings. In some of his later work, I would argue he was dabbling in impressionism. I sold a landscape he did, and the bottom portion read realism, as you moved up the image, the tree tops kind of faded into an impressionist mist.
I loved that piece.

51 CBD, Thanks for the Rembrandt. Even at the end of his life his use of color, light and composition remained. And his ability to evoke thought and feeling remained undimmed.

Imagine this painting in a den or study, where the viewer could spend hours contemplating the genius of the artist's technique and the parable until the two blend in his mind. It strikes me as a very private meditation.

The parable of the Prodigal Son has come up before. I understand the lessons but still think the older brother got screwed. He deserved his father's admiration and appreciation and there is nothing in the story to indicate that. Not that I'm projecting anything personal into the matter.

I used to think the same thing, then I got it. The older son was always appreciated, was always there in his father's grace and favor. He had nothing to fear, certainly not rejection from the father unlike the younger son who had turned away.

Repentance is hard on your pride and filled with fear. Do not be afraid; if you repent and turn towards the father he will run to meet you; not with recriminations and accusation but love and celebration.

Easier to accept, for those with no skin in the game, so to speak. Harder when it's personal, and frankly, nearly impossible for some, because the parable asks us to generalize to whole swaths of people.

----------------------------------

There are multiple lessons in this one story, and the some that the older brother represents are the sin of greed and lack of love. The older brother does not share the father's joy because he does not love the father, he cares only that he 'gets what is coming to him.' Note that in his complaint that he mentions that his father never gave HIM a celebration, "...yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends." Not with the father and his family, but with his friends. Very telling as to his contempt for his father.

In the very next line he shows his utter contempt for his repentant brother, "But when this son of yours came...."

I'd say the Dad made his love for the older brother quite clear.

31 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and

and is found.'

90 There are multiple lessons in this one story, and the some that the older brother represents are the sin of greed and lack of love.

Posted by: John the Baptist at August 31, 2016 10:26 AM (MPH+3)

The older son does not yet understand, he is the one wandering the wilderness, not yet returned home. His celebration will come... when he gets it. IF he gets it.

Lest anyone forget, this parable, among other things, was an admonishment for those who would be resentful of the newcomers Jesus was welcoming into His Father's Kingdom.

I only became familiar with Vox Day about a month ago. Although I've had contact with his work without knowing it. He released a obscure PC game called The War in Heaven which my dad bought us for Christmas way back in 1999. I tried playing it but never truly got into it. My dad was hoping my mom would play it. A rather vain hope since my mom knows very little about computers, let alone pc games.

Vox Day was created by the progressives. Rough estimate, from my experience, 8-9 out of 10 had terrible homes from which they escaped. The wandering is a direct result. Every now and then though, you encounter some person who spends a life of folly, and there is no apparent underlying cause, other than the individual's own bad choices.

I believe the latest Democrat grifters have a friend who bought the old estate where Magnum PI was filmed. It had been vacant for a few years and had really fallen into disrepair. The rumor is that the Obama's will be vacationing there whenever they are not in DC, agitating and attending every cocktail party, and fund raiser. Or in NYC, schmoozing the UN for Barry's next faux leadership position.

Yep. Many people have family members fighting addictions. Those family members, while still in the battle, will use and destroy, sometimes anyone/anything in their reach.

If you love that person, you HAVE to stay out of their reach, not because you don't love them, but because you MUST protect yourself, lest you be destroyed to the point of never being in a position to be there for them, if... I did not say when, I said IF they ever return. Really return.

194 The prodigal son parable goes hand and hand with the lost coin parable. Both were to show that God is forgiving no matter how sinful you may be and joyful when sinners decide to turn from their sins.

It is also an explanation for those that feel that they are unappreciated for trying to do right when all around them are sinning their ass off with no consequences.

The one parable I turn to when I feel that way is the one where the property owner hires people in the morning for $20 to work for the day. The owner continues to hire people all the way up until almost the end of the work day for the same $20. The morning workers are upset to which the owner reminds them that they happily agreed to the $20 as more than fair so why should it matter if he decides to pay these others the same.

Read the article, folks. The ATF is NOT declaring smokeless powder high explosives and requiring new storage protocol. It is declaring nitrocellulose, even wetted, to be a problem, and even says that variances to new storage protocol may be permitted if need can be demonstrated.

Wiki has a decent explaination of nitrocellulose, including it's uses in photography, cellulose film, etc.

I do understand not caring for how the Job story is told. However, there's an element of it that occurs to me, which is that God does not have the ability to prevent Satan from gumming things up. So it's not so much God giving Satan free reign, and admonishing Satan to realize he has no power over good.

Yes, Job gets put through heck, so to speak, but I don't see that as God's doing. Other than having created the universe in which Satan exists.

230 219 Job's punishments are a recapitulation of Deut. 28. His redemption is akin to Isaiah's suffering servant. Look at it as a narrative version.

I learned God allows suffering because those that are blessed have a duty to be show empathy and charity towards those who suffer.

The USA has fallen off a cliff in that department towards our own countrymen and Christians across the world.

283 As to the arcane and confusing issue of ATF regs changing WRT handling of components for smokeless powder production, two encouraging snippets.

Snippet one, Chris Hodgdon of the eponymous powder company says there has been no change that will affect the consumer market (presumably to include loaded ammo as well as components).

Snippet two, an ATF statement on the matter includes this at the end - "However, based upon the diminished likelihood of wetted nitrocellulose exploding, ATF will consider variance requests to store the wetted material under an alternative arrangement." (this could = no change)

Apparently "private letters" or specific explanations of policy from ATF have been the basis for much of the status quo approach to these things since forever, so granting variance requests also sounds like standard current practice.

But - that we even have to consider as plausible a capricious regulatory change that would devastate an entire field of activity (pertaining to an expressly enumerated constitutional right) - and we do - pretty much sums up the state of the rule of law, constitutionalism, and the American mindset in 2016.

The younger brother illustrates a point about the scripture to be written. Jesus will be many, many years younger, and further down the chain, than so many who served the Lord, and yet he is the sole heir of God.

The Lord would reverse the conventional, natural order, and he illustrated this theme through repetition.

398 But even non-fascist people in power regularly make things worse, not better. It's the nature of those who seek power. They intend to use it.

I'd say:
People in power regularly make things worse, not better. It's the nature of power, and those that acquire it wind up using it.

399 After a quick search, the proposal is to serialize the brass. That way it will be super convenient to track that brass back to the shop that sold it (as they will have to keep official records of course), and thus to the person that bought it.
20 other states have similar proposals on deck.

Sounds like the scheme of a few years ago to put "micro-taggants" into gunpowder.

At best, such a serializing scheme might result in a few dumb murderers getting caught, probably the same ones who already get caught because theirs was an impulsive, unplanned crime. Likely won't stop the gang-banger killings in Chicago, since I'm willing to bet most of them are committed with stolen guns that they got with a full magazine. Innocent, legal gun owners who were victimized by burglars will be harassed.

And clever criminals will use revolvers, so they can dispose of the spent brass "safely", or else find some other way of defeating the serial number scheme.

400 FAB speaking at an American Legion Convention? What's next? Speaking at the NRA?

I do like how Trump is living rent free in their heads by going to Mexico and speaking at a black church in Detroit.

401 The article says more than 12% nitrogen in the nitrocellulose. That is tri-nitrocellulose which is not used in smokeless powder and is an explosive. The DOT allowed people to ship "wet" tri-nitrocellulose without following ATF regs. This is a bureaucratic dick measuring contest between ATF and the DOT.

It won't affect the manufacturing or sale of smokeless powder.

402 Thank you for displaying Rembrandt's "Prodigal Son". I saw it in the Hermitage in 1976. I'd been wandering through the Dutch section of the museum, which is very large, since Peter the Great admired the Dutch, and had his agents buy every Dutch painting they could lay their hands on. Most are tediously mediocre - my guess is that the Dutch art dealers used Peter's buying spree to clear out their attics - and I found myself passing through room after room of windmills and canals and canals and windmills. Then I turned in a relatively small gallery. There, on one wall, was "The Prodigal Son"; on the other, Rembrandt's "Danae": I was stunned, literally. Both are large paintings, nearly life-sized, and their presence is overwhelming. It was the artistic equivalent of gravity-lensing: they are so beautiful, so powerful, that their power effectively bends reality around them. Seeing those paintings was one of the great experiences of my life.
