Polls Vary, But All Seem To Agree: Trump Is Regaining Footing Against Clinton

In the NBC poll, Clinton's lead drops two points, from +8 to +6.

Now, that's still a blowout, but the trend is favorable.

Meanwhile, in the LATimes poll (which always has Trump doing better than other polls), Trump has now moved into a three point lead.

But it's the state polls that ultimately matter. Alas, the latest from Pennsylvania has Clinton up six.

107 My wife is Hispanic. She and her family are strongly pro-Trump, even the multitude of her cousins.

This time last year, our friends who own the Mexican restaurant around the corner all thought that Trump was the Antichrist. Now all some two dozen of them, save one, are quietly voicing support for Trump.

I'm seeing the same thing with other Hispanics. They're not advertising their loyalties because it isn't cool, but almost all now support Trump.

It's not that they think that Trump is so great; it's that they believe Hillary is so horrible.

153 The press has become a catastrophically damaging engine of distortion and opinion as opposed to source of information, but no need to stick to generalizations when it comes to polling.

Just assess the quality the methodology, to the extent you can. Sample quality is really the essence of polling, and a challenge for most survey professionals in all sorts of surveys (this includes the weighting process, or in election terms "turnout model" used).

Apply "Brexit effect" adjustment to your taste, but recognize it's wild-ass guessing vs. data-based (and recall the "Bradley effect" is probably myth, whereas the similar "Wilder effect" might have some basis to it).

Apply election fraud adjustment to your taste, but recognize it's rarely material to the outcome (it has been, say in 1960, or the 2004 WA governor's race, or MN Senate in 2008, but it's not usually so, and it's meaningless if the margins of victory are what we have seen in most states in recent cycles @ the prez level).

And divergence between prez and Senate races is not unheard of - and would not be that surprising this cycle, given the unusual line-up.

Algore was pretty much a mime for 8 years. He was liked because he kept his trap shut. During 2000 people got to know him. The rest is history.

http://bit.ly/2bYEZDM

If only ten percent of Bernie voters from the primary have actually taken note of how they were treated and refuse to vote Hillary, that makes 1.3 million young commie millenials not turning out. And that's just the primary voters, the most involved, the most passionate.

Do not forget this.

In the United States, Sherbet and sorbet are different products. For Americans, sherbet typically designates a fruity flavored frozen dairy product with a butterfat content between 1% and 2%. 258 Surely the Beast's campaign has been focused since the outset on trying to max black - and to a lesser extent, "Hispanic" - turnout, esp. in FL, OH, VA, PA (now possibly MI as well).

It's simply a key part of the Dems' electoral map every four years. In a non-blowout year (most cycles, incl. possibly this one), the Dems have a very different electoral map without strong black turnout.

The degradation - of what was once the Dem party, of the office of the presidency, of the unwritten rules of public life at the top levels - by Obama and now Clinton, specifically to motivate black voter engagement, is some of the most despicable stuff we've seen since 2008 (which is saying something).

But as others have noted, it may not work the same way for an old unliked white woman as it did for the historic first/blank slate mediocrity.

Thing is, as kremlinologists, it's not longer a solid assumption to take even vile and risky pandering to racism and racial identity among blacks as a sign of bad internal polling for a Dem campaign.

It's just what they do, now. It's SOP.

This was supposed to be a Democratic year on the Hill anyway, because of the disproportionate number of R Senate seats up and majority fatigue in the House, regardless of whoever the Republicans selected for President.

Now the House looks like a lock, Senate may be No Change, yet Trump is going down in the worst Republican loss in a two man race since -- 1964?

Maybe, but "It's different this time!" is a business proposal for a Black Swan ranch.

Barry doesn't want to remain in power anyway.
Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 30, 2016 07:35 PM (rwI+c)

Oh, you underestimate the need for the uniparty to maintain power. To paraphrase Heinlein in "Between Planets," It might not be logical to that farmer, but to those who have and want to maintain power, it makes sense. You would see NRO, Weekly Standard, etc. fall in line about how awful it is that the Russkies messed up the election but we'll have a true election next year.

Anyways, they'll tell Barry all he has to do is make speeches for a year as the jury-rig some election of uniparty candidates "fighting" it out.

Yeah, that's the part I don't get. You're a Republican and you can't vote for Trump? I can understand that. You decide that the alternative is to vote for Hillary? That makes no sense at all. And to be proud of it? There is no logic to it at all.

Excellent question for Hills, provided she is given time to prep her response.

Posted by: Burnt Toast at August 30, 2016 08:01 PM (P/kVC)

289 I just refuse to get uptight over these polls. They've been consistent in their internals for months now. The LA Times poll is excellent for taking real movement because of its use of the same respondents in every poll.

If the voting population tracks against historic models, then it is close to a tied race which Clinton probably wins because Trump has no turn out operation.

But if the voters are atypical then we could see Trump winning PA and MI and getting a comfortable EV margin despite losing VA and CO.

Really it is going to come down to how many working class who haven't voted in a long time (or never) show up this time for Trump.

It is interesting in that this year will prove whether globalism is here to stay, or if national concerns get to decide their own fate. If Trump loses, it will be NGOs running the world from here on out.

290 Wait, 8% splits in favor of Team Donk?

Wasn't the partisan split 7% in 2008 and 6% in 2012? Gallup's polls on partisan identification show a 4% split currently - don't know about other ones, but I find the idea of the Democrats having a bigger partisan split than 2008 hard to believe.

Based upon 2012 or 2008? I don't see Hillary inspiring huge turnout from Dems. All she has is Trump fear and the Cruz and Bush Crime Family dead enders. I don't think never ending war for the Saudis is terribly popular.

295 "Really it is going to come down to how many working class who haven't voted in a long time (or never) show up this time for Trump."

And to what extent Hillary can replicate Obama's 2012 turnout.

I'd bet on Trump. Hillary can run, but she can't hide and she owns anything bad that happens in the next two months, including Trump even doing OK in the debates. MSM moved too early, too much.

297 Me, I never thought Trump ever "lost any footing." He's been leading this thing wire-to-wire from the getgo, but coming out of the dem convention the MSM wanted to paint it otherwise. They can deny reality for only so long. So now he's "regaining footing." Just more media lies, misrepresentations, and distortions of reality.

Posted by: Random Thought Generator at August 30, 2016 10:26 PM (xH2Lj)

298 I looked at the Monmouth poll. 25% 65+ people. A different PA poll from Emerson with somewhat different age weighting that just came out showed Trump down only three.

Two polls, two very different assumptions about how many old people will make up the PA electorate, and one puts Trump at MOE range while the other puts him well out of it. And that's completely ignoring D/R/I splits, just looking at the age weighting decisions.

A recent Michigan poll from Emerson (part of a battleground poll set with the PA I already mentioned) had nearly half (44%) of the polled sample from respondents over age 75. Is that typical for Michigan voting? Again, not related to D/R/I splits, but other stuff.

There was a poll in I think FL that was 58-42 female/male split. This is not typical for FL election turnout at all. It didn't show Trump up.

You don't have to "unskew" the polls, but they are making some seriously weird weighting decisions in many of the recent polls that show Trump at a disadvantage. And hey, maybe that weird stuff will be what the electorate looks like in the general.
