Overnight Open Thread 08/29/16 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

Good evening fellow Morons.

I'm keeping it short and sweet tonight, so let's get to it.

Let's start off with something we're all familiar with, an old proverb:

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions

Indeed.

What a waste. The poor thing probably suffocated to death.

BTW, this isn't the first Larry the Lobster to achieve worldwide fame.

I hear Eddie Murphy is going to be in theaters again soon with four films in the works including Beverly Hills Cop 4 and a biopic on Richard Pryor.

Speaking of drama...

Can you imagine her teen years?

The charm and grace of a gentleman.

And how was his graciousness returned?

Oh, I think you can recall:

The General Accounting Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said today that '"damage, theft, vandalism and pranks did occur in the White House complex'" in the presidential transition from Bill Clinton to George W. Bush. The agency put the cost at $13,000 to $14,000, including $4,850 to replace computer keyboards, many with damaged or missing W keys.

Some of the damage, it said, was clearly intentional. Glue was smeared on desk drawers. Messages disparaging President Bush were left on signs and in telephone voice mail. A few of the messages used profane or obscene language.

I wonder what the current occupants will leave behind. My guess is that even Obama will be classier than the Hillbillies.

And just one more thing:

Take that MTV. THIS is sexy, and she needed neither slutty videos nor even a svelte body to get the attention of everyone in the room.

have a good night and play nice, folks.

10 The 2016 Larry was saved from the stockpot, too. He was destined for dinner when several concerned citizens worked with a group called iRescue Wildlife, Inc., to intervene, the Miami Herald reports.

See, this is what happens when activists get in the way of a good meal. The animal dies for nothing.

Now that's an interesting idea. On the West Coast, lobsters have jet lag and are just not that good. But the Dungeness crabs are a different story. Drawn butter works, but so does the Cantonese "salt and pepper" (breaded in shell) treatment, and the Sichuan version. Even had a version of Singapore's chili crab, in San Francisco, once. Too sweet, but still good.

Rubbing salt in the recently inflicted wound. Just galling. I still can't believe that I came in behind Jim Gilmore in the GOP primaries. I didn't even vote for myself. (I was hung over.)

But if I'm ever elected President, I'm going to leave my successor not one, but three letters. They'll read as follows:

(1) Welcome to the Oval Office! This is a tough job. You'll have problems. I certainly did. My predecessor left me three letters to explain how everything works. I've followed that tradition faithfully. If your troubles become especially difficult, open the second letter.

(2) Blame everything on me. Wait a bit to see if that works. If it doesn't, open the third letter.

(3) Prepare three letters.

Actually, only one of the roads to hell is thus paved. Other roads to hell - most of them, actually - are paved with pure evil. Others with stupidity. Others with the preening, holier-than-thou phoniness of a bunch of vacuous, dead souls.

The lobster stealers/killers had no good intentions. They weren't buddhists who thought the lobsters were incarnations of their grandmothers or anything. They were just a bunch of holier-than-thou preening pricks who were trying to use a lobster to signal their "moral superiority". Yeah ... save a lobster but skewer a 5 month old fetus through the head and celebrate.

----------------------

I don't know about Seagate specifically. But in my current job (IT Walk-Up Bar at a very large company) I've seen a few hard drives get sent off for successful data recovery. One of them was a solid state drive that was so far gone that the computer we tried to slave it to couldn't even detect the drive. My co-workers and I were certain that the data on that drive was gone for good.

Data recovery got the data anyway.

Note, though, that we warn *everyone* who might consider using the service that it's expensive, the costs will need to come out of their own department (which is when most people decide not to bother), and there's a good chance that the department will end up ponying up the initial non-refundable fee only to be told, "Sorry, we can't recover any of your data." And we also let them know that if the data is recoverable, it will likely cost them more than just the initial "find out whether it's even recoverable" fee.

You have to bite the bullet and do it once to get it started. After that, updates shouldn't be that difficult. I don't know how much turnover and traffic you have in your files but once you get most down it shouldn't be hard to just do the updates nightly or weekly.

While watching that little tyke bet out her number, I was reminded of that Youtube clip at the zoo. There was an infant playing in front of the glass at the lion enclosure. The lion was biting and clawing at the glass, but as hard as she tried, she just couldn't get through to that sweet little toddler.

As for the rest, well...

Every now and again, I have to tell someone, "I'm sorry, but we tried to slave your old drive to pull the data off of it, and our computer couldn't detect your drive."

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 29, 2016 11:33 PM (w/iDp)

Irongrampa is likely correct, in that the High Standard has a prominent take-down button integral to the frame, in the curve just above the front of the trigger guard.

Whereas the Woodsman lacks such a device.

Regardless, M.H.'s and my subsequent quip work well towards AoS snark, and thus, we're both awarded 0.5 points, after requisite demerits.

Irongrampa runs of with each of our forfeited 4.5 points, each.

I also recommend R-Studio, though my license is well out of date. Just not enough data recovery work to justify buying the upgrade.

Hard drive brands vary by generation. There was a long period when Western Digital was regarded with suspicion due to failure rate while Seagate was regarded as the first choice. I haven't had a hard drive failure in a remarkably long time. I may have a bad SSD in one of my machines but the symptoms aren't clearly pointing at the drive and I haven't had the motivation to pursue it further. If it's the motherboard the machine is probably more trouble than it's worth to fix. If it's the SSD it'll have to wait until I can justify the expenditure. Perhaps I'll wait until Black Friday.

Do you want a disk___ or an incremental file backup?

I use Acronis TrueImage for the latter. The issue is that that's a complete multi-gigabyte snapshot of the drive every time, slow, time-consuming.

But that also makes recovery vastly easier.

An ideal situation is a hybrid - a snapshot once a month, or every two weeks, with an incremental file backup every day or two in between.

So your snapshot restoration leaves you where you were 2-4 weeks ago and then you've got to go out and fish back everything modified after that.

Just make sure you've got the image-restoration software on a USB stick handy.

298 I've had hard drives of just about every name brand fail early, and then some that lasted a long time.

I had a 2TB (I think) WD external that died several months after I got it. I took it apart, wondering if somehow it was just the USB interface. It was an SATA and I got the drive out and plugged it in one of the SATA ports. It was dead, Jim.

It was one of these "green drives". I have another WD external, lower capacity that I've got plugged in a "MyBook World", which is WD, and is little Ethernet box, which I use for backup. It runs some version of Linux for small embedded systems like that.

I've got two Seagate externals plugged in the main machine hear, a 2 and 3TB. They've both lasted well.

The issue here is that if your computer is like MOST computers you have a LOT of data on there. Five years of TurboTax, your car service records, a terabyte of really wonderful Japanese porn you'd die without.

The question is how much changes day to day, or week to week?

Would it be a tragedy for you if your computer executed the HCF instruction* today and your last backup was two months ago? Or last month?

It takes time to do the backup.

What you probably want is TrueImage or something comparable - disk___, not incremental file backup - on a monthly schedule, and TWO disks - after the backup completes it goes to the safe deposit box or the in-laws' basement and you plug in the second one.

If you'd be facing corporate disaster if you lost something from two days ago, then it gets more complex as noted above.

320 "lp(n) on fire" is still in some Unix systems, and I think in some Linux variants , it will still be humorously generated. It was a gag about an a strange error condition.

Printers in the old days were much likely to start paper combustion. There are stories about a printer actually being on fire when the strange error condition happened.

Anyway, it told the system operator to run and check the printer. Something was wrong.

In that scenario an image backup is more time intensive than you'd probably want. If you're going to replace the whole machine you'll only need the data files. Most backup app will default to backing up the Libraries (Documents, Pictures, Video, etc.) but if you store thing elsewhere you need to tell it.

Another thing to do is take advantage of the cloud features in most browsers now. If you use, for example, create a Google account (if you haven't already) and it will back up your bookmarks and other stuff the browser stores. On the new machine you need only log into the account and all of your stuff will soon be there.

324 >> I want to be able to go to Walmart, buy another

Realistically the BEST case is you go to Walmart, buy another box, plug in the external HD, plug the recovery software USB stick, start the computer and tell it to start from the USB stick, and tell it to recover from the external HD.

Now, personally, my desktop and 'big' CAD laptop (which is really an upgraded five-year-old $150 eBay HP) run SSDs as their primary disks, so I worry more about physical destruction and the physical disks in the Synology NAS (after all, 1TB ain't enough for really good Japanese porn...*)

The problem with NOT doing an image backup is that, having spent the past two years cleaning off the factory 2012 bloatware and adware and everything else and setting up the machine the way you want it, it blows up and when you recover you've got the factory 2016 bloatware to deal with.

I'm still mostly on Win7, Win2008 Server, got some Win10 VMs but not primary OS, the only OS I keep completely current here is CentOS and the Synology box.

330 I was reading about the history of the "printer on fire" error message. It probably dates back to the late '50s. There was some fancy xerographic printers, forerunner of the laser printer. These things could print 1 page per second with an extended fusing oven.

This was a big oven that heated the paper to fuse the ink/toner on the paper. If the paper stayed in too long, it would be heated to combustion.

With the right kind of jam, it would start a fire and the front end would keep stoking that fire with paper rapidly.

That is thought to be the origins of the printer on fire concept.

That assumes a sufficiently identical machine for the image not to contain the wrong drivers and other stuff. Getting the wrong HAL can be really disastrous, especially if you start with one brand of CPU and move to another.

Many years ago Larry Niven had a machine that a colleague built for him that included some choices I found questionable but left alone so long as Larry was happy. It was an Athlon dual-core back when AMD was still competitive for gamers. (One of the things that concerned me was the odd things done to make the then high-end video card fit.) When it died I hoped to get Larry on something more up to date, which was a Core 2 Duo on a 965 chipset board.

I was hoping to not have to reinstall everything from scratch and had had some case in the past where I got away with transferring a boot volume to a somewhat different machine. It took much work to make everything work but less than a complete rebuild. I knew the HAL was going to be a problem and I found a utility made to address just the issue I was facing. But it was not very well designed and the AMD HAL was still used when I tried to boot. This blew shit up spectacularly. It may have been recoverable still but by then I'd resigned myself to just doing the full rebuild and being sure rather than slick.

In more recent years Larry lost interest in gaming, or at least anything that called for a higher end system, so his current box is a Dell Core i7 with just the IGA video. An off the shelf machine was now adequate for his needs and so he was no longer an opportunity to live vicariously by building a hotrod for someone else.

>> have an exact duplicate so that it is not necessary

The issue is two-fold - it takes time to get your disk im*ge from your computer disk to the backup, and it takes time and software to get it back from the backup to the computer boot disk.

This is the disk im*ge approach (minx/pixy doesn't seem to like the word spelled out) and there's literally a hundred products out there that will do it.

Because it takes time to make the image, you will never have a perfectly current backup. Maybe every couple days, maybe weekly, maybe monthly.

And because it takes time, and a piece of software, to put it back, there will always be a step involved in restoring your new disk/computer to the state of the old one.

And, as I noted earlier, hard-disk/computer failure is ONE failure mode. SMODemocrat/fire/earthquake/burglary is another. So plan your backup strategy around identifiable threats.

I take that for home use as meaning two backups where you swap them as often as you're prepared to go to the bank safe deposit or the in-laws' house.

In the past, when a machine of mine died, I'd get a completely new one and install everything fresh.

As such, I just relied on copies of my harddrive. I have few programs that integrate with the operating system, and those that do, only do so to store the local user settings or other files where I could just install the program fresh and then copy-paste the data files.

If you are comfortable with replacing the failed hard drive, that should be fine. I'd suggest having two types of backups. The monthly image, which you'd use to restore the system and the daily backup, which should only copy items that are new or have changed since the last backup. Doing the whole image daily would get tedious.

If you plan to replace the whole machine, the new unit may have significant differences under the hood and the restored image will require some doctoring before everything works right. If certain elements are too different between the old and new, it will simply crash before you can do anything to fix it.

354 If you have critical business or personal records, you want to back those up offsite, either via an online service or by putting optical discs in a trusted location like a safe deposit box or a small fire safe at a friend's house.

BD-R, the writable form of Blu-ray is the best bang for the buck for this. Though if you have just a few gigabytes to backup, DVD will serve.

If you have a lot of critical papers, scan them for a digital backup. The Fujitsu ScanSnap product line is widely used for this. I have an older model I use for scanning de-spined books for conversion to e-book where no digital copy of the text is available.

Programs and data are two separate issues. Your data should always be kept separate from your programs (different partitions/physical drives). It is really only your data that you need to back up. Programs can just be reinstalled and are the least important issue. If you have commercial software then you just need to make sure you keep the recovery discs or the discs they came on (or some copy of the installation so that you can recover them). But the DATA for those programs is to be kept separate from them and that is what is important to back-up and protect. YOUR stuff!

373 BD-R, the writable form of Blu-ray is the best bang for the buck for this. Though if you have just a few gigabytes to backup, DVD will serve.

Posted by: Epobirs at August 30, 2016 01:10 AM (IdCqF)

The funny part is that BD-Rs and DVD-Rs cost about the same amount ... so blu-ray is definitely the way to go. And the double layer versions of each cost about the same, too. I guess it makes sense since they are, basically, the same - just a cheap plastic disc with a thin film glued to the top (or sandwiched in between two cheap plastic discs for the expensive variety, which makes them a bit more robust).

381 @367
Programs and data are two separate issues. Your data should always be kept separate from your programs (different partitions/physical drives). It is really only your data that you need to back up. Programs can just be reinstalled and are the least important issue. If you have commercial software then you just need to make sure you keep the recovery discs or the discs they came on (or some copy of the installation so that you can recover them). But the DATA for those programs is to be kept separate from them and that is what is important to back-up and protect. YOUR stuff!
-------------------

To add -

Most data these days ends up in your user folder. So most of the time, the easiest way to back up your data is to just make a copy of your user folder.

That doesn't guarantee that you'll get everything. Sometimes stuff can end up in an out of the way spot even if you haven't created a unique folder for a particular program's data. But the vast majority of the time, everything is buried in the subfolders of your user folder.

Kind of depends on how you set the variables in the simulator, though. I wouldn't put very much trust in that with a catastrophic problem. Too many unknowns.

There was a pretty significant cost difference last time I looked. Blu-ray in PCs never caught on big, so the market volumes just aren't there. I'm still surprised by how many people don't even know a writable form of Blu-ray is available to them. Despite it being just an upgrade in the optical gear, they've never had any reason to think of Blu-ray as a PC thing.

I paid about $45 for my blu-ray burner. The discs (single layer) cost around 20 cents@, which is not much different from DVDs. Further, I have burned about 700 blu-rays and have had less than 5 coasters out of the whole lot (all of which were my fault and not an issue with burning) - which is something I never could have even dreamt of with DVDs or CDs. And the blu-rays burn pretty fast. 13 minutes for a full 25GB disc, which is faster than write speeds on a lot of flash memory.

Every new job that I interviewed for wanted a copy of my license, a DOT physical, and a state issued motor vehicle report which shows all moving violations and accidents for ten years. He either borrowed someone else's license or the company didn't do due diligence. The civil court cases will bankrupt the company.

A lifelong Democrat, Dumm plans to vote for Hillary Clinton in November.

That tells you this is not news, it is rank Democrat propaganda. The cities have been a hotbed of Democrat socialism since the 30s and yes, they are going further to the left now. Dumm is a political consultant meaning that she is really unemployed most of the time. Looking at her resume she has never had a real job that I can tell. This tells me that Fox is becoming more like CNN every day now. But at least CNN's site works. I will probably soon abandon Fox.

Going back to Bitly, Tiny URL is giving trouble again.

I've told the story before, though I don't know where I read it, that Mel Brooks originally offered the role of the Waco Kid to John Wayne. The Duke read the script and reported back that he thought it was one of the funniest things he'd ever read, but he couldn't take the role because it would destroy his career. So the role went to Gig Young, who couldn't handle it (mental and alcoholic problems) and third choice Wilder took on the part.

But could you imagine Wayne playing the part? I think it would have been wonderful.

540 And North to Alaska features the great Ernie Kovacs.

I'm not a fan of Sid Caesar, but I've always liked his role as dentist Melville Crump in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. You'll note that his wife is played by Edie Adams.

Who she, you ask? A singer and actress who created the role of Daisy Mae in the 1956 musical Li'l Abner, she was also the wife of comedian Ernie Kovacs. . .

Who was the original choice for Melville Crump before his death in 1962.

Here's Adams as Daisy Mae:

541 Votermom, many thanks; you're very sweet.

I did mention I should do a post about The Producers because of Gene Wilder's death. Let me see if I can whip something up over the next few days.

542 If you're going to leave that Heatstreet article up there, about Hillory holding onto things, you're going to lose some credibility.

What nonsense. Nobody despises Hillory and all her works more than I, but that's just a stupid, worthless article.

Get something real on her health problems, and take that tripe down.

543 Wait! What? Books? She has books? How on earth did I miss that?

Well, I'm a guy, so. . .

Anyway, yes, two books out; a silent film murder mystery called The Director's Cut and a scholarly look at one newspaper's reporting of the Jack the Ripper murders, The News From Whitechapel. The first you can see (and get a sample chapter of) through my nic; the second is available through Amazon.

There's supposed to be another, The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, a sequel mystery, but I've been struggling with it for over five years now with no resolution in sight.

544 "Too late for that. 48 Senate Republicans already voted to put it on Fast Track. All he needs now is the House."

The Republican Party is the party of treason.

545 Yeah, I still have trouble visualizing Kovacs in IAMMMMW...Though I'm sure he would have enjoyed blowing up the hardware store....

547 But before I go I would like to thank Smithsonian Magazine for making this month's issue nothing but a propaganda outlet for a bunch of black SJWs who spew lies and innuendo. I think I will not be renewing this subscription when it expires. I somehow got the inaccurate impression that this was supposed to be a "scientific" magazine as opposed to the run of the mill liberal propaganda outlets. To give you an idea of how bad it is that black mouth from Atlanta that you saw trying to break up the Trey Gowdy hearings is hailed as a "congressional God" in this issue.

Sorry, Vic, but this sort of thing happens. Saw some years ago with "Aviation Week". Subscribed to that for years, and for a long time it was the ultimate in professional publications, and stuck to their subject, which was aviation and spaceflight. Very expensive (about $90 a year back then), but worth it to me.

But then, the e-vil BOOOSH got elected, and next thing I know I'm seeing crap that looked like it was right out of TIME magazine. Annoyed the hell out of me, as I was not paying all this money to read the irrelevant political opinions of some dipshit editor, specifically a guy named James Aker. I even wrote the editor of the magazine asking what the hell was going on. He did reply, agreeing with me, but his response was otherwise rather incoherent (seems he was on the verge of retirement). Next thing I know the guy does retire, and who do they make editor in chief of Aviation Week? James Aker, the same commie douchebag who'd been fucking things up for w while. Needless to say, I did not renew my subscription, even though they spent the next few years badgering me to renew.

549 Another piece of Mad World casting is seen towards the end of the movie, when the battling drivers and Captain Culpepper are hanging on to a collapsing fire escape for dear life: a ladder is stretched out to them, with a fussy firefighter screaming "One at a time! One at a time!" to the desperate crew, finally wagging his finger and warning, "You'll see - you'll see!"

The firefighter is played by Sterling Holloway, best known as the voice of Winnie the Pooh, and, it would seem, an odd choice for the role. Although no casting memo concerning the part have been found, there's always been speculation that the role was supposed to have been filled by comedian Ed Wynn, who, as the "Texaco Fire Chief" for many years, would have been instantly recognizable in the part.

550 I preferred the Leslie Parish version of Daisy Mae from the movie.

Well, I'm a guy, so. . .

So you already had your transition, "Zir"?. That means you should call yourself Mr. Banks' Practically Perfect Piercing or Bert the Chimney Sweeps PPP. ;^)

I have read his mystery, creeper. It's interesting and fun.

553 MP3, sorry about assuming you were a her. I have the opposite problem. Anyway, "The News From Whitechapel" isn't referenced anywhere on your mainpage that I could see. You need a link.

Found it on Amazon. Stocks are low. Hope that's a good thing.

Have to agree with you there. Edie was built, but I don't really find her face that attractive. Leslie has/had it all.

I'll have to watch the movie again sometime.
