It's perhaps unremarkable to observe that a LOT of that New Deal-financed art looks quite a bit like Soviet propaganda paintings.

yes, and I would appreciate some prayers sent her way-she couldn't sleep, and is in class from 9:00 until 5:50 today. Even though there is no cancer, she still has something going on with her BP-doc has no idea. That plus the anemia, the fatigue are still making it a challenge to get everything done she needs to do. But...she's tough, and she doesn't whine or back down. Puts her shoulder to it, and keeps going. I pretty proud of her.
Plus her schedule this semester makes me weep-physics, calculus and quantitative analysis. Whew.

When we were driving by the marina in Victoria there was an absolutely stunning sailboat docked. I'm talking something that looked like it was flying across the water just tied up there and also looked like it cost a yuuuuuuuge amount of money. I may have pawed at the window muttering My Precious but you can't prove that.
Seriously, it was a work of art. It was in the if you can afford to buy it you don't care how much it costs to man it and maintain it class.

Interesting that an artist subsidized by the Public Works of Art Project, essentially the New Deal, would paint Atlantic Class boats racing on Long Island Sound.
Foster was an avid sailor, so it was sort of his thing.
And: "Once completed, the artworks were displayed in public buildings to uplift a dispirited nation through portrayals of what project officials called 'the American Scene'. These diverse representations of people, industry, cities and farmland were meant to reassure viewers of the countrys strength and purpose on its road to economic recovery."
So the American Socialist version of happy Russian peasants harvesting wheat-fields and Red Chinese revolutionary operas.

Thanks!! She has a an executive functioning disorder that makes it difficult for her to process information, but for some reason, she can do the really difficult stuff fairly easily-it's the easy stuff that is hard for her. She can parse out complex chemical equations/formulas, and understand the intricate mechanics of deep sea photosynthesis, and forget how to tie her shoe.
But it makes me think there is something beyond the "absent minded professor" appellage.

We have a Hatteras hammock that I bought my husband for Father's Day years ago. It is finally showing signs of wear - some of the ropes are starting to fray. And this last weekend, one of them broke.
The HH website has a rope repair kit that comes with directions, but I don't know - seems like a lot could go wrong. However, at $35, it's way cheaper than ordering a new hammock.
Has anyone ever tried this themselves?

The weird thing about the whole 'Night Gallery' show was that the producers didn't want Rod Serling to write any of the scripts. They wanted the name, the face, the voice and the associations but didn't want the talents of the guy who wrote at least half of the Twilight Zone scripts as well as the screenplay for 'Requiem For A Heavyweight'. Serling is arguably one of the finest television screenwriters who's ever lived. Their decision is even more baffling in retrospect.
As an aside, Rod Serling was a paratrooper in the Pacific theater in WWII. He saw a lot of action and his unit suffered an atrocious casualty rate. In a documentary on Serling's life I saw not too long ago, one of his childhood friends said he thought Serling's writings were a way of working out his demons.
Iliked finding out Rod Serling was a paratrooper. So was Jimi Hendrix. So was I. Proof all the cool kids are paratroopers.

Thats the nature of sailboats and racing in particular.
Usually day racing is just "around the buoys" which means that there's a circuit that they have to complete kind of like a race track on the water.
Then of course there's the fact that sailboats navigate upwind (and apparent wind boats - downwind as well) by "tacking" across the breeze. This is where much of the tactics of sailboat racing kicks in - where you try and use the right-of-way rules to screw over your competitors.
As for my boat's name... its going to be called "benchwarmer" since my wife's sports medicine practice is paying for it. Got the deposit in, contract signed...

I can't imagine that the businessmen who were plotting a coup were serious about it, since they approached Gen. Butler, who was a vocal anti-capitalist & anti-war activist. They literally could not have chosen a worse person to inquire about overthrowing FDR. I personally think the whole thing was just idle talk that Butler ran with to prove his agenda was right.

Not necessarily. The Atlantics are keelboats, 4'9" draft in a 30' boat, so the weight of a crew member or two isn't going to make much difference. They aren't centerboarders, where you're point would hold. (Frankly, they seem to be heeling quite a bit, relative to the sea, the wind seems strong. Not that the LI Sound has much wind, anyway.) On some boats you can have a good view of the sails that way - others not so much. I've never been on an Atlantic; I'm from the S Shore, where there's not enough water for them. But I've seen R-boat sailors sail them that way.
What IS wrong is the directions they are going. The buoy should directly astern two going downwind, so either they have an immense lead on the others, or the ones still beating are overshooting it. (They are clearly going to pass it on the starboard tack, which is what they are on.)

I could be wrong, but I thought that CO was not raking in the pot taxes they thought they would. The taxes practically doubles the price of pot so people buy it from black market instead...black market made up of entrepreneur pot growers and Mexican drug cartels smuggling in their product.
The cartels have to bring it to CO via interstate highways, has been a problem for law enforcement in the surrounding states. But we were told it would not affect anyone else just CO! Yeah right.

Trump relied on widespread name recognition and free media coverage in the primaries. That won't work now. Hillary's got a $1 billion-plus war chest with most of that money earmarked for media saturation campaigns in swing and battleground states. If Trump's campaign is waiting for the right moment to initiate a mia blitz of their own, then I hope that moment is soon.

I've never heard that the Cartels were transporting pot into CO. It is huge business here and there are plenty of home grown suppliers. There are parts of CO that you don't want to trespass into as the growers protect their cash crops being heavily armed.

Not to mention the fact that a lot of legal grow operations and dispensaries divert a big chunk of their production and inventory to the black market. As an example, a few years back, the guy who owned several legal dispensaries on the CA central coast (including the most successful one in Santa Barbara) was busted driving a huge load of weed to illegal dealers in Oklahoma.

That's true. I think 3 states have tried to sue CO but they haven't been successful. One case where a CO driver was pulled over in another state (forgot which one) just because of his CO plates. He won his case just recently. We do have a lot of transients on the Western Slope that come here for the pot and of course end up committing crimes and creating havoc.

Ah, there's the rub: unlike other states, CO granted people with a medical MJ license permission to grow up to 99 pot plants. So....yeah, people have ways of getting pot w/out going to a legal pot shop. Also, this has attracted new cartels, including Cubans, that are growing so much dang "legal" pot here that state is now exporting it over the border.
