Our #HotTake Culture and Why It Exists, and Open Thread

I didn't write about Ryan Lochte because 1, I didn't care, and 2, I didn't know any facts.

In this #HotTake age, where assholes race to be the First To Be Outraged on Twitter, having no information is really no impediment to having a very strident, emotional reaction.

As with people rushing to attack Ryan Lochte based on no information whatsoever.

I think this is an interesting phenomenon, and I think I can explain it.

Suppose a black guy is shot by a cop. I have absolutely no information about it. I don't know if the black guy was shot, for example, accidentally or in a conflict. I don't know if he was armed or not. I don't know if the cop shooting is black or white.

I know nothing about it.

Now -- should I have an opinion on this matter?

The obvious answer is "No, I should not," but that's not the real answer.

In this #HotTake non-culture culture, I should definitely have an opinion.

Based on what, if i have no information?

Based upon my tribal sympathies and chauvinisms, is the answer.

See, anyone can condemn a cop shooting once they know the actual facts and the facts turn out to show that the victim was innocent and the cop was blameworthy, fast on the trigger or negilgent or what have you.

But if I wait to know the facts, what does that say about me as a person? It says nothing about me -- again, anyone can see the facts of a bad shooting and then say "That was a bad shooting."

No -- to establish yourself as on a higher moral plane than other people, You have to offer a strident, emotionally-hot opinion without knowing anything.

Because only if you don't have the proper facts upon which to make that determination can you successfully advertise the fact that you are knee-jerkedly siding with BlackLivesMatter.

(Or, for that matter, with cops, if that's your preference.)

Again, this is not a game of showing that you've come to a reasoned judgment after the evidence has emerged and you have apprised yourself of it.

Bad people can use the power of reason too, after all. Racists can see a shooting was bad, if the evidence proves the shooting was bad.

The game is not to make a reasoned, fact-based judgment -- because that says nothing about your default sympathies, tribal allegiances, and ideological priors.

The game is to make an unreasoned, non-fact-based judgment, a judgment based only on emotion and allegiance and chauvinism -- because that, unlike a fact-based judgment, shows where your heart is.

That's why people in the #HotTake culture pressure others to take positions before any facts are actually known -- facts are for the emotionally cold.

No, the point of making snap decisions isn't to make logical judgments on individual facts, it's to emotional judgments based on "social justice" or group facts.

Ryan Lochte was rich (well, relatively) and white and Tastelessly American and probably was in a fraternity at some point (or at least looks like he was).

The people in Rio are diverse and less wealthy and probably were not on the Harvard Crew Team.

If someone like me waited to indict Ryan Lochte, but then ultimately indicted him based on fully known facts, that kind of shows that I'm racist, because True Allies of the Downtrodden don't wait for facts.

They just show their ideological priors and tribal loyalties by condemning the member of the Out-Group.

No one cares where your brain is -- that's so Twentieth Century, man.

The new hotness is to be nothing but Emotional Bias, 24/7.

In the old days, enlightened men and women would show their enlightenment by reserving judgment until the facts had been collected and analyzed.

In the New Enlightenment -- really the New Dark Ages -- we show our enlightenment by doing the exact opposite, shrieking our strident but completely uninformed opinions before the situation gets all tainted with "facts" and "evidence" and "reason."

In Ignorantia, Veritas.

In ignorance, Truth.

Open thread.

Happy weekend!

If you're now, like me, in the "Middle Ages" between ages 28 and 30, make sure you do a lot of warming up before any physical exertion, and don't skip post-workout stretching and cool-downs and definitely don't skip recovery days.

31 Since this is an open thread I'm going to explain to what seems to be at least 50% of the population (gauging by posts I've read lately) how to open a pickle jar without using a rubber gripper or running the jar under hot water.

You take a knife or a flat head screw driver. You put the tip into one of the indentations on the bottom/inside of the lid.

You press inward on the knife body which will come in contact with the glass jar.

This releases the air out of the vacuum seal. You'll hear it ...swoosh...and a pop of the lid...as the air leaves the vacuum sealed jar.

Then just open the lid like normal.

You are welcome.

i do that but it feels like cheating.

other good advice: When it's too hard to turn, try turning it more gently.

A lot of times when we try to force it, we're ourselves putting additional force down on to the top of the jar and pushing the sides in tighter. We're responsible the very forces that stop us from advancing. (How Dr. Phil-ish.)

Anyway, about half the time I remember this and try this, it works.

The other half of the time I have to break the seal with a screwdriver.

63 The problem with the outrage culture is that people get locked into their opinions before the facts are out...

It then becomes an emotional issue.. where they are invested in their now proven incorrect opinion... and thus must get MORE outrageously outraged to defend said position.

And then the personal attacks begin on anyone who is actually trying to ASK real questions about that subject....

Then the person who is attacked for asking the question.... gets angry over the attack.... and things escalate...

situation gets all muddled with 'facts' and 'evidence' and 'reason.'"

What's even more disconcerting is that even after the "facts" and "evidence" are finally definitively on the record and available to all, they make no dent.

The bien-pensants will have formed their impression of the matter from the early false reporting and they will NOT be dissuaded by any earthly means.

I continue to meet white liberal yuppies out here in the SF Bay Area for whom it is an absolute article of faith that the late Michael Brown, of Ferguson MO, was an entirely innocent and blameless small child who was assassinated by a racist white cop, who shot him in the back repeatedly for no good reason as Brown ran away in fear with his hands in the air.

Aver that Brown in reality weighed as much as an NFL linebacker, was captured on video committing felony strong-arm robbery, was in possession of the proceeds of that robbery, was so high on drugs that he was likely to have been outright hallucinating, and that three separate medical inquests found no bullet entry wounds in his back?

Well, there's an obvious explanation for you bringing these things up. You're a racist. Which absolves the white liberal yuppies from any responsibility to address your counterargument.

Okay, pre-workout "stretching" is not advisbale, some say.

Warming up, however, is the thing to do. There's a difference.

For instance, you don't stretch before you do bench press. You do not grab something and start stretching your shoulders and pecs. What you do is warm up properly.

Now it is okay, however, to use an exercise band/loop to warm up, which will seem like stretching, I guess.

I got the impression it was a security guard that may have pointed a gun and probably the business owner that demanded money for the damage they did.
Posted by: Ricardo Kill at August 26, 2016 07:02 PM (9ym/

In the article, two journalists from USA Today actually investigated what Lochte said. The day after the story broke, they went to the gas station/convenience store, and found that the bathroom -old and dumpy, had no damage. An old crusty soap dispenser, a rough looking door that had not been off the hinges, no damage. They checked the surveillance cameras, which showed that Lochte and the other three went into the store to use the restroom, were sent away, and then went behind the store to urinate. When they got back in the cab, the security guard shoved a gun through the window of the cab and demanded money.

When these two reporters shared the information they had gleaned by, you know, ACTUALLY DOING THEIR JOB, no news service bothered to correct the facts.

So, Lochte may be a douche, but he didn't do anything wrong except get drunk and pee where probably dozens of Brazilian men (and women, to be fair) probably pee. How does he deserve the shitstorm he is getting?

106 Willowed on the last thread, but just as applicable to this one:

341 This simply cannot be repeated enough:

"In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to."

With Voodoo Floss, you CAN work through the pain while it heals/gets stronger. Starret discovered that since blood flow was the key, screwing around with your circulation in the injured area and moving the joint can alleviate the pain.

But you also need to use common sense. Some stupid chronic injuries you just have to live with, tho. You can't wait forever to things to heal when they'll never heal. It's sucks getting old.

165 Ace, what you say is banal, obvious and pedantic.

And yet my father and sister have caused me to think more or less verbatim what you have wrote. They are not mentally retarded, as far as I know. It still beats me why what is so obvious does not even seem to occur to them. Namely, "I don't have enough information to form an opinion." They think the race of the participants is enough to form an opinion.

Yet those with this cognitive disability, this specialized form of mental retardation, are the ones most eager to "cure" other people of their misconceptions.

Also, Fish Oil is a legit supplement for joints. Doesn't perform miracles.

But Fish Oil, a multivitamin, and creatine, of you'd like, are really the only 3 supplements you should take.

I recommend protein powder in bulk, too. 1) It's good to supplement protein because you might lack this macro in your diet, and 2) it prevents one from having a "bad" beverage during meals, such as Coke or juice or beer.

187 When Brazilian security guards voice a growing despair over what they perceive to be unfair treatment following encounters with drunk white American swimmers; when study after study shows that Brazilian security guards and drunk white American swimmers experience encounters differently, so that if you're a Brazilian cop, you're more likely to have your account disbelieved and marginalized; when Brazilian mothers and fathers raise their kids rights and have "the talk" about how to respond if as an adult working as a security guard they encounter drunk white American swimmers -- but still fear that something terrible may happen when their child walks out the door and gets into an encounter with a drunk white American swimmer -- when all this takes place a mere 44 years after a white American swimmer won seven gold medals in a city that for many years was the home of Adolf Hitler -- we cannot simply turn away and dismiss those Brazilian security guards as troublemakers or paranoid.

If you engage in strenuous physical activity or staying fit at a young age you need to realize you trapped yourself into it for life.

There's no letdown process except gradual stretching out the activity. A cessation will see you go to crap in a remarkably short period.

Regaining an acceptable level of fitness commensurate with age is damn difficult. Ask the expert here.

BUT maintaining that acceptable level is a rewarding experience,as you grow older. Again, ask the expert.

191 Weird how this high BP thing came on.

In S. Africa, I overcame my extreme fear of heights and climbed down a 200' path to a boulder-strewn beach, and climbed with fingers and toe holds into an ancient cave. Of course, the young, buff guide steadied me and my bad knee over the boulders.

Did a 2 hour walk in the savannah on a "lion walk" that was a tad scary but exciting.

Even with all the gourmet meals, came home 10 lbs. lighter.

And then the high BP.

211 It's called the sweet release of death for a reason.
Posted by: Insomniac at August 26, 2016 07:33 PM (0mRoj)

True. Way back in my 20's, I was having a deadly serious allergic reaction to medication. After 12 hours of seizures and swallowing my tongue, I was ready to die to get the suffering done and over. They told my husband and my parents that I was dying. I was in a "teaching" hospital and they ran every damn intern in that place through to see what full body seizures looked like. They also assumed because I was young that I had taken illegal drugs and they kept asking me what drug I was "on". I had the flu plus double pneumonia and the doctor had called in a prescription for my husband to get for me for nausea medicine to stop my vomiting. Only thing was, he forgot to make a note of it, so it wasn't on my chart. Another doctor finally said, "well, it sounds like a classic compazine reaction only you didn't give her any." My doctor finally remembered that he had given it to me and a big shot of benadryl and I was on the mend.

My take away from that incident is that yes, a person can be quite ready for the sweet release of death.

All my labs came back good. EKG showed I have a strong, healthy heart. So there's that.

Turmeric is an incredible anti-inflammatory. It's great for painful joints. My right knee is badly arthritic after having a torn meniscus 30 years ago. There were days I could barely walk during cold or rainy weather.

If you haven't tried turmeric, Google it and give it a try.

Why is RPE important?

Because there's a point or a level each person needs to be at when lifting weights to make progress, i.e., get stronger, gain muscle.

If you're not there, you won't make gainz!

Yeah, truthfully, my VN Vet husband had to be persuaded not to kill himself a doctor. My MIL was in the room when I swallowed my tongue--she bravely fished it out. When I woke up, there was a ginormous safety pin pinned to my pillow case. I asked what it was for and I was told that if I swallowed my tongue again, they were going to pin my tongue to my jaw under my bottom front teeth. The next day, I remember looking at the wall behind the head of that hospital bed and seeing spots and stains that were invisible from the front unless one's body was bent so far backward with a seizure that one's head faced that wall upside down.

I agree with chemjeff- get your diet in check, talk to a doc, and take care of yourself. Remember, these bastids don't want you to live, or enjoy life. Doing both of those things is a great big middle finger to them.

And for an easy start for a healthy diet, try the DASH diet. I've been on it for a week, it's easy, I feel so much better, and I've started losing weight. I've been on South Beach and many low/no carb things, and it made me...unpleasant. This seems to be working and the family enjoys it as well.

261 As to the "hot take culture," like a lot of the culture, I'm not part of it. Raised to be careful and skeptical, a nerdy logic machine by nature, and having been in some work where you learn the rewards of all the above all help.

At this and other subversive web sites, one often sees "48 hour rule" as a first reaction to outlandish, or particularly favorable, "news" or "events". So there are quite a few here immune to the hot-take culture (previously known as jumping the gun, or leaping to conclusions, or counting your chickens, or .....).

As for upside-down logic, and mostly twisting reality to support your emotionally-embraced views, well, there's still lots of that. Distribution of this behavior has not been symmetrical or even, but naturally I can't reveal the details of the imbalance.

http://images.myfit.ca/cache/images/verticalpress_002.gif

There would be times, when I would try this machine, and I would do reps to failure, when I couldn't push the weight out anymore, but I did not feel any soreness anywhere. It was weird. Not in my chest or arms or shoulders or anywhere. But I could not physically push the bars anymore. Does anyone understand what would cause such a thing?

The weight was way too light. To build muscle, you need to literally tear your muscles so they regrow bigger and stronger.

When you lift weights, they need to be heavy enough to cause a substantial (perhaps even cataclysmic) contraction of muscle fibers. Get it?

It is reasonable to assume that the intelligence services of several countries hah access to these emails. How hard would it be for them to get those emails onto Wikileaks without revealing who had done so? It seems that there ought to be at least one of the countries with the emails who would prefer that Hillary Clinton not be President.

If Wikileaks already has the emails or won't release them, how hard would it be to mass email a file with the missing emails to every reporter in the Anglosphere. Surely there would at least be some newspaper in Australia or Newfoundland who would put the emails on line.

For the alcohol-loving morons who travel, I offer BSG's tips on how to run around drinking in countries that you do not speak the language:
- keep sobriety reserve for when shit goes bad
- have map or know area plus public transport, cabs, etc
- get out and go home by 2
- do not fuck with anyone but especially anyone who looks like Russian mob
- remember a shallow grave is common method of disposal in the rest of the world
I have used these to booze around without cell phone by myself in lots of interesting places. Lochte got a lesson here. Too bad he is an idiot.

298 Nice find, Grump. I've only ever bought a few things from AIM, but they've had good ammo prices, even during the '09 and '13 panics.

May get one of their AR bolts when I finally get around to edumucating myself to the point that I'm buying components.

Aside from shotgun and 54R milsurp, I reload everything I shoot, so I have bought very little factory ammo going on 4 or 5 years now.

CA's latest insane gun law will require background check/dealer pick-up for ammo purchases (no, not making this up). So even more reloaders will be born. However, given the time commitment/logistics/nature of reloading, many will not pick it up. So I foresee a huge hit to CA's shooting scene, over time, as costs rise.

If you ain't getting a pump, you ain't doing it right. Plus, there's a thing in bodybuilding, (I aint no bodybuilder) called the MIND-MUSCLE CONNECTION.

Posted by: gNewt....panhandlers never seem to not have their hands out ~ at August 26, 2016 08:08 PM (QvdcM)

323 t-bird: "From what little I've seen (a lot of cancer close to me), nope, par for the course. Stuff is forgotten or messed up all the damned time. Too many shifts, too many interns, too many hand-offs."

This.

At an ER, I was given (improperly) an antibiotic too rapidly and it induced an immune reaction. That physical observation from another shift of personnel was tied to a non-related doctor's abbreviation on the day's chart that was to note "IR" instead of "ID" [classical bad penmanship from MDs], and I ended up essentially unmanaged for about 12 hrs. until an Infectious Diseases specialist could come around and visit and say, "Wait a minute, I don't need to be here at all."

So bad handwriting and its ripple effects could have produced a very bad outcome for a patient in an ER condition.

This is common. Piling on of mistakes in medical care is not unusual. At all.

You weren't factoring in/or did not understand the correct RPE, as I mentioned above, jeff.

Also, these things don't happen overnight. Just because you didn't "feel" anything for the few days you lifted weights, doesn't mean anything.

Consistency is key. Give it a month. Straight. No skipping days. Then see what happens.

329 >>But if the weight was too light, how could I go to failure?

>>And this wasn't like 30 or 40 reps, this was like 10-12 reps before failure.

Optimally, you want to be able to exercise with a weight you can perform the exercise between 8-12 times. Less than 8 and you are lifting too much, more than 12 too light. Only you will know what is the right weight for you, it doesn't matter what anyone else lifts.

I do 2 sets of each exercise with a weight I can do in this range and move up incrementally when I can easily do 2 sets of 10. And take at least 24 hours between exercising the same muscle set. Growth takes place during the rest not during the workout.

The key is to go do it and not just talk about it.

336 Modern medical care is sometimes indistinguishable from magic, but is also run by humans, so mundane disastrous mistakes happen all the time.

When my mother finally went permanently into an assisted living place, brother and I took the time to look over her list of prescriptions. We're a medical family so maybe a bit more knowledge of such things than average, but in any case right away there seemed to be too many items on the menu, and too much of some items.

Sure enough, just talking with two of her doctors, we whittled down her drug menu substantially, and she felt better (of course). Like coral reefs, these lists can grow over time, and often aren't rigorously reviewed, or some items "sunset-ed" automatically.

As in everything else, apply your own judgement, be skeptical, test the professionals, make them earn their pay and justify their recommendations. It can only help, and sometimes might actually save you.

I have been too furious/despairing to even learn much about the new one, or whether CalGuns/NRA/SAF have a legal strategy they're working on it.

However, based on what I *do* know, THIS one *should* be vulnerable on inter-state commerce grounds.

Ha! Look at us, discussing something related to guns, in the US, in CA no less, as if facts, the constitution, logic, and common sense are factors. Before he shoots the villain in the neck causing blood to flow from the wound, his mouth and his nose as he slumps to the floor.

I believe the new law (and maybe the Newsom initiative, with which there is a lot of over-lap) DO in fact prohibit importation of ammo by private individuals, such as you describe.

So the road trip to Yuma or to the Cabelas near Reno would *not* be problem solved.

This is part of the beautiful idiocy of CA gun laws - they are taking on the character of controls over the populace most familiar from now-collapsed Soviet bloc systems.

But even if I'm wrong. The dumb, bigoted, ignorant people with alien values and mindsets who spend their time trying to reduce freedom in America, in this case guns, are learning (like a monster in a sci-fi movie).

Increasing costs and hassle is a sound strategy for them to attack firearms freedoms. Reduced risk of judicial roadblocks.

416 chemjeff: "If this was the case, then what can I do about it?"

I haven't lifted in quite a few years now, but when I did, I just rested when I got weak. You hit a peak and stop. Don't risk injury.

As mentioned previously, you generally aim for about 8 to 10 reps at a given weight. Do a set. Rest for a minute or two. Try doing another set of the same number of reps. And then another.

If you can do three sets of 10 at a given weight without tiring but "feeling" the weight (and having a small bit of soreness due to lactic acid buildup the next day), then you're ready to increase the weight by a small increment. If you can't do the full compliment of sets, then either stay at that weight or drop a few pounds of weight until you can. Don't rush through the process. It will take some time to build stamina and for anabolic muscle and vein production.

Do not rush yourself. Slow and steady wins the race. And there will be variability between individuals as you are a unique machine.

454 You concentrate on the muscle you'r training while doing your reps.

I have heard this before too, but I honestly don't understand what this means. How do you "concentrate" on a muscle?

Posted by: chemjeff at August 26, 2016 08:05 PM (5p18q)

++++

Think of the curling exercise. It is intended to work your biceps. When you let the weight down, you do not want to let gravity do any of the work. You let the weight down slowly, focusing on using your biceps to lower the weight. When pulling the weight up, same thing. Pull it up slowly, concentrating on using the biceps to do the work.

It isn't unusual to see someone, especially when they are getting to the end of their reps, get tired, so they do things like try to swing the weight a little with their back or legs to gain some momentum before pulling the weight up. This is defeating the purpose. The purpose is not to somehow get the weight up. The purpose is to exercise those biceps.

If you focus on using only the biceps to control that weight through the whole exercise, the muscle will get more of the benefits from the exercise.

456 When my mother finally went permanently into an assisted living place,
brother and I took the time to look over her list of prescriptions.
We're a medical family so maybe a bit more knowledge of such things than
average, but in any case right away there seemed to be too many items
on the menu, and too much of some items.

Sure enough, just talking with two of her doctors, we whittled down
her drug menu substantially, and she felt better (of course). Like
coral reefs, these lists can grow over time, and often aren't rigorously
reviewed, or some items "sunset-ed" automatically.

As in everything else, apply your own judgement, be skeptical, test
the professionals, make them earn their pay and justify their
recommendations. It can only help, and sometimes might actually save
you.
---
^^^^this X 1000^^^^
step one: ALWAYS get all your prescriptions filled in one pharmacy. (HMO's should take care of that step for you)

people, especially older ones, have a tendency to get prescriptions filled near whichever provider they are seeing, and no one is reviewing the prescriptions for interactions, duplications etc...

another bad habit is to *save* old prescriptions, or canceled ones, "just in case" or to "save money"... also, throw away each bottle as it empties, rather than dump the new one into the old.

pill organizers are also generally a bad thing, unless they are being filled by a "competent" caregiver, who checks each bottle, EVERY time, rather than relying on memory or "what i always do"... PS: competent caregiver is NOT the nice housekeeper from some 3rd world country who no habla ingles.

lastly, do NOT store your room temp meds in the bathroom or the kitchen. light, heat and moisture are your enemy in the fight for medication stability. that's why the little necklace or pocket containers for nitro tabs are horrible: you;ll have an angina attack, and the tablets will be useless, as the nitro will have broken down. best place in most houses for drug storage, assuming you don't have inquisitive rug rats? the linen/towel closet, assuming it isn't in the bathroom itself. lots of insulation, dry and no light.

If you buy an 80% receiver in Nevada and machine it there, it is no longer an 80% receiver. It is a receiver manufactured by you which means that it is not on the California list of firearm models requiring registration.

A Nevada gun shop could also sell items from ar15mold.com. That might actually be a good solution for Californians who want an AR15 in the event of civil disturbances or disruption by earthquakes, wild fires or any other sort of natural or man made disaster. Obtain the complete parts kit, magazines and ammunition, everything needed to assemble an AR15 except the receiver.

If bad things are happening so that it would be a good thing to have an AR15 and the authorities are likely to be preoccupied with other matters than looking for people with guns they don't like or keeping you and your family alive, mix up the resin, pour the mold and assemble the rifle. Once the danger has passed, disassemble the rifle and dissolve the plastic receiver in solvent or burn it if you can do so without incurring the attention of the California Air Resource Board.

474 Re: Lochte,

People keep confusing the international incident with his initial contact with police/security guard.

The fact that he did some damage to the gas station bathroom was confirmed by his teammate. They pushed in the door and Lochte pulled a metal framed poster off the wall and threw it out the door.

I just saw that highlighted on news again this morning.

Sure , not a big deal. None of it was a big deal. Lochte and co. gave the station manager money to cover the damages/shakedown whatever and then got back in their cab and went back to the Olympic Village.

If security guard pointed a gun at them, well, if this station is in an area that needs an armed security guard, then they obviously have violent incidents. He 's got four drunk American athletes who supposed created damage in the bathroom, etc. and one, Lochte(again, teammates said he was making things worse by repeatedly standing up and screaming at guard). I can't imagine it would be unusual for the sec. guard to have pulled his gun out, especially when he didn't speak English and they finally got another customer who did to translate.

Incident was over. US Consulate and the Rio Police were aware of went on and had agreed to let things go.
Then Lochte told his mom who was there that they were all robbed. Mom starts telling everyone she meets about robbery and media gets hold of story. NBC went to Lochte and asked him in an interview if the story of him and his teammates being robbed was true and Lochte tells this outlandish story of being in a taxi, that was pulled over by another car, with no lights or sirens. A guy came up with a badge and ordered them all to get on the ground. Lochte said he said no, they hadn't done anything and the guy put the gun to his head and cocked it. Lochte said whatever and then they were robbed.

I watched this interview. Along with millions of others.

The police also watched it and that is when they got suspicious of Lochte's story. They reviewed the footage of Lochte and teammates returning to the Olympic Village and saw that they all had their wallets, watches, jewelry, ID"s, etc. Which if your're robbed at gunpoint by highway bandits posing as police, wouldn't remain with you.

Police wanted to interview all four. Lochte then changed his story on the second day, after the police wanted to interview, that really, this happened at a gas station in Rio. They were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi while at a gas station.

Lochte then left Brazil. His teammates were pulled off a plane headed for the USA and their passports confiscated because the Rio police wanted to know what really happened.

It was at this point that Lochte's teammates said the gas station "robber" was untrue, and told the police about the vandalism, security guard, etc.

The one teammate had continued at first to tell the same story as Lochte, then finally told the truth and was told he could get his passport back and leave if he paid a fine for a false report of a crime.

All of the above happened in front of US Consulate representatives, USOC representatives and lawyers provided by the US consulate.

Lochte has charges now in Brazil of filing a false police report. He has apologized for "embellishing the truth"(lying) for that crazy story he told initially to NBC that made it sound like a Rio police officer robbed them at gunpoint on the road.

He is looking at sanctions by the USOC, the US Swim organization and has lost sponsorship by Speedo, Ralph Lauren, some mattress company.

He just got a cough drop ad deal. Like I'm going to believe anything he says about the cough drops.

USA Today is hardly a bastion of great journalism. They went a week later to the gas station and said there was no damage. They are trying to pretend to be Woodward and Bernstein, when in reality their just lazy ass journalists who had a free vacay in Brazil and poked around a gas station to see if they could uncover some unseen clue to exonerate Lochte.
Despite the fact that Lochte has admitted to being drunk, stupid, his teammates have said he pulled stuff off the wall after breaking in a door and all have admitted that the first story was a total fabrication.

Your feedback on that and any other AR components that I might also

first one) are more than welcome.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 26, 2016 08:34 PM (QDnY+)

If you're just doing a simple budget AR as your first, you might be best served by something off the shelf, like the SW MandP15 which is a pretty well-regarded mid-grade rifle, and usually around $700 or less on the street. A bit more will get you one of the more basic Spike's ARs which are quite nice. In either case, your biggest problem will be finding one that's actually in stock, depending on your area.

My first AR was a Del-Ton, which is often regarded as more of a budget gun with occasional quality issues. Still, mine turned out to be quite reliable and accurate, and I think they've even improved the QC.

I'd stay away from the Olympic Arms stuff, which is pretty low-rent. My brother has one that he picked up a few years ago during the Great AR Bubble and it's always been a problem child (undergassed). I did some work to it to get it marginally usable, but I was hesitant to open up the gas port. I'm probably going to build him an upper from scratch and just trade him so he's got something reliable.

None of your narrative accounts for two very salient facts: Witnesses (even witnesses to their own events) are terrible at remembering details, even when completely sober, and Police are very good at pulling confessions out of people, even when they're not holding your buddies hostage, and HAVE A REPUTATION AS THE BRAZILIAN POLICE DO OF COERCING PEOPLE TO NOT BADMOUTH BRAZILIAN AUTHORITIES.

498 >>He just got a cough drop ad deal. Like I'm going to believe anything he says about the cough drops.

Did you believe what he said about the mattresses?

This is definitely in contention for dumbest story of the year. You know why people initially believed his story? Because people getting robbed in Rio is about as unique as a dog getting fleas. It happens constantly.

First time I was in Rio, the hotel that I was staying in got robbed a couple days after I left. Got robbed meaning that a group of masked, armed men descended out of the local Favela, held the front desk people at gunpoint while the rest of the gang went room by room robbing everyone in the hotel. And this was right on Copacabana Beach.

I like Brazil. Have some good friends there. But the reason people originally believed his story is because getting robbed in Rio is pretty damned easy and everyone knows it.

520 Sherri,
I took compazine to help cope with chemo and had a similar reaction--lost control of the muscles of my face. They moved independently. Every so often upper and lower jaw would align enough to slosh water in my mouth, but not a prayer of talking or eating. I remember walking all day, trying to get the paralysis to move lower down, where it might be easier to live with.

My husband came home, called the doc, Benadryl, 20 minutes later all was well. Wow.

But my reaction was the opposite from yours, interestingly enough. I realized that I was in the fight for as long as I had one finger left to type. I wasn't goddam going anywhere. (Easier to think when I had a husband who was there for me 24/7.)

I had never been that determined before. It was a life-changer.

1. It's kinda funny that Dancing With The Stars didn't drop Locke from it's schedule when all of his sponsors were running away.

3. Trump changes his tone on immigration.

Would Progressives go through this much trouble to ruin a guy's own prospects, then provide him with an financial escape, just to push a narrative that is fabricated?

Some stuff has a "patina" of rust remaining, but most pieces are fit to use right away. Of course, I rinse with fresh water, and dry them in the sun, too.

543 Is there anything one can do except submit to the beating?

Minnesota is a concealed-carry state, is it not?

You know ... I've never understood this.

I've worked with folks - including gun owners - that LOVE to wade through the legal codes and tell you when you can legally shoot and when you can not. I've learned that there are literally books written on the topic.

Spoiler Alert - I don't give a damn.

I will go to a Trump Rally if I choose. I don't like Trump, Politics, or a Rally ... but please, let me know in advance that there'll be trouble for Whitey if I do. I can always make the time.

And at that point - I really don't give a fuck about the legalities.

I did accounting and taxes for most of my adult life. Bookkeeping, accounting, taxes, etc. I was one of those people though who was told by everybody that's what I should do when I was a kid, so I did it.

Nowadays 99% of the time they want experience I don't have (i.e. QuickBooks) so there aren't many I qualify for. I'm sick of doing stuff I don't like though. That's a shitty life to live.

Right now I'm a security guard at a church. I don't want to do that the rest of my life either.

It probably wouldn't hurt to send resume's out in your field as well as other stuff. I hear about people who get back in after being out a while. I just have a crappy resume' and as I said I don't want to do accounting anymore anyways.

He was amazing in Millennium.

Saw him in a B movie where he played a character named, in homage to Burroughs, Dr. Benway.

He'd way-lay travelers and use their organs as life support systems to keep his dead wife alive.

627 Agreed with everyone who hates Prometheus. The *only* bluray I've ever sold that I don't want back.

Bandersnatch, your summary of Prometheus is great, made me literally LOL.

And for everyone who's interested, here's what I found out is being released on bluray for the very first time, between now and the end of the year (most are September or October). Found at blu-ray.com.

- My Bodyguard (from 1980)
- Salem's Lot
- Miami Vice: The Complete Series
- Glengarry Glen Ross
- I The Jury (the 1982 movie version)
- Punch-Drunk Love (Criterion)
- One-Eyed Jacks
- Labyrinth (1980s sci-fi with David Bowie)
- Moscow On The Hudson
- C.H.U.D.

...and I'm not sure if it's the film's first time on bluray, but a new edition of To Live And Die In L.A. is also coming out.

629 I've worked for 26 years in the same job. It doesn't pay a lot, but it's enough. It's a small business, so I don't have to deal with office politics, rules and regulations, HR, or affirmative action hires. Small businesses are the best places to work if you find a good one.

There's a comfortable and predictable daily routine, yet each day is different, so I don't get bored. The job matches my skill set.

I'll be here until the owner dies or retires, and he's not the retiring type. After that I have no idea what I'll do.

I'm very, very lucky, especially in this economy.

635 594 Hubby s watching Cesar Milan (dog whisperer etc) on tv.

So there's a success story. He was an illegal immigrant, I think, and didn't speak english. Started as a dog groomer. Now he's a millionaire.

I think he's some kind of were-dog or something. Wiki says as a boy he was called El Perrero (dog boy)

I read this and had to comment. This observation made by Momma Pepe 3-4 years ago is worth it.

I was visiting Momma Pepe and got sick. She is a fan of dogs so I tell her lets binge watch Caesar Milan, The Dog Whisper. After about 6 or 7 episodes, She looks to me and says "Do you notice how Ceasar always moves in for the hugs with big breasted women?".I reply "Why no I have not"

I'll be damned if the rest of the day that SOB moved in for the hug on big blobs and stayed back from smaller boobs.

We laughed our asses off all day at this. I still laugh thinking about it.

Something to look out for. Maybe he has stopped but 3-4 years ago, he was diving in.

A liberal acquaintance gave me some shit because our golden retriever greets all visitors enthusiastically. (Imagine.)

Meanwhile, his kids are in the 30s, and Junior is a useless wanker layabout, while Princess is a useless dyke layabout. Both are living off Mom and Dad.

But the way I raised my dog - that's a problem. I need to pick up my game, so that my golden retriever becomes a bit more standoffish.

643 Prometheus was a prequel. The scientists were idiots.

The point of the movie was that it was suppose to be a surprise Alien prequel at the end. I think that's why the scientists were idiots. They had more common sense in Alien.

Also the diectors cut of Alien and Aliens are better than the theatrical versions.

Now I'm out Rons and Ettes before the Horde ruins my all Alien weekend.

657 Since this is an open thread...

So, I've been trying to reconcile myself with the existence of the alt-Right. As such, I have been arguing with Vox Day over on Vox Populi. I...am at a loss. But having pondered on why the alt-Right exists in the form that it does, I ultimately point back to the Left. Their total dominance of the cultural high ground has resulted in this virulent strain of anti-Leftism that seems more preoccupied with hurling rhetorical nuclear bombs at every other version of Rightism with a significant following in America. That said, what is there to say about folks that seem hysterically committed to proving Lefitst stereotypes of rightwingers correct, and labeling all who don't buy into it as "cucks" and traitors-to-the-cause? It's enough to make a decades-long warrior against the Left and political correctness want to retire to a comfortable cabin next to a cool, calm lake in the mountains. D.GOOCH

665 Greetings:

Back in the mid-70s, I was trying to make a living off my freshly printed Psychology B.A. by working for New York State's Social Service industry in midtown Manhattan.

A romance developed between me and a certain young lady who worked there and that a couple of the older Jewish ladies in the office found both interesting and to a degree charming. As the young lady was a Clint Eastwood fan, one of the older ladies gave her tickets for his appearance at the Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with the showing of his "Bronco Billy" comedy movie in which Sondre Locke was also cast. Mr. Eastwood, by the way, had recently left his wife of many years, (and the mother of his children) to partake of Ms. Locke's charms more fully and more often.

Mr. Eastwood was introduced and spoke graciously and gratefully to all assembled, but I sensed a kind of emotional undercurrent in the audience that, due to my aforementioned degree, I felt that I should help release.

So, after Mr. Eastwood finished his remarks and the movie began, I patiently waited as the initial credits began to roll and when Ms. Locke's name appeared, I gave the tiniest, quietest, hint of a hiss that swelled into a crescendo as almost all of the women present verbally expressed their hate and/or disapproval of the sister who had scored big.

As the auditorium returned to a more civil atmosphere, my date turned to me and said, through the pursed-est of lips, "You started that, didn't you?"

It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
